Jory Keyes spends his time drinking and cruising gay bars picking up one night stands. Then suddenly he becomes the only witness to a brutal murder. Although the killer vows to silence him, Jory refuses to go into witness protection. This puts him into conflict with Sam Kage, a very straight and very hot police detective. I'm probably going to be in a very tiny minority here but again not trying to be a contrarian. I just didn't like the book. I gave up at 60%. As with the only other Calmes book that I've read, Jory, the narrator is simply perfect. He is from Planet Perfect where no one ever puts a foot wrong or has a hair out of place. I mean, his clothes are perfect, he is the perfect employee, the perfect friend blah, blah, blah. Everyone likes him and he likes everyone. After a while I just wanted to throttle...more

It's been awhile since I've been so delighted with a book and its characters. I was curious by the reviews and comments on AMOT and wondered if I ought to wait for all four books to be released as a package (less expensive that way) but decided not to in the end.

I must say that Club Lighthouse Pub must have the ugliest website I've ever come across. It was an offfence to the eyes and senses. Thankfully, the recs from the GR members helped me ignore that and I'm so glad.

Like many romance readers...more

DON'T READ THIS BOOK unless you're ready to read all four of the first books at once and you are ready to be really upset for awhile. Apparently the four were written as all one book but the publisher felt it was to long and cut it into four parts. I'm very angry with the publisher. These are emotionally draining.

I'm going to review all of the first four together because they really are one book. I've noticed that now #1 & #2 are called Book I and #3 and #4 are Book II in some places but boo...more

I devoured this book! Jory is too perfect to be true, at least seen from the outside. Seen from the inside, I think he sells himself cheap. He is one of those people who bring joy and happiness to anyone except to themselves. There are good things in his life, he has a lot of friends, good looks, a good job, but for example he hasn't had a family and although he doesn't really say it, his thoughts sometime betray some bitterness, which he hides behind his congeniality.

Sam. I want to kick his ass...more

4.5 stars but under protest

*note* I originally posted this review to book 2. I was so rattled by the ending apparently I lost my mind. Be warned this book literally ends in the middle of a sentence. You need to pick up the story in book 2.

This first book was really interesting. I love Jory. I love Sam. I love Dane. (This is not a ménage, just all pivotal characters in the book)

Right off the bat I was hooked. It is from Jory's POV (although there is some head-hopping to Sam occasionally)as we w...more

I just realized this is for book ONE and TWO, I bought the ebook on Amazon and it was both books in one I guess, what's up with that?

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
I can't believe I only have 5 stars to give!

Wow, what a roller coaster!! I simply loved everything about this story, first I completely fell in love with Jory, I think he's the most adorable guy ever in the history of ever! that doesn't make sense but no matter! my god, he's just so kind and he's pure heart, and not relevant, but we have the s...more

It started out fine, and then I remembered my previous experiences with Mary Calmes' books - Change of Heart series, which had a great potential but failed to achieve it.
Similarly, this novel was harmless, cute fun, but there's not enough depth to characters, and not enough development to the story. "A matter of time" is mostly character driven.
A propos characters, it made me laugh the way all the guys and girls were all over Jory, and I didn't even mind it, except for the fact that the way th...more

This is a really hard book to rate. Parts of me would have like to give it 4 stars, but parts of me want to give it 1 and throw it down a cliff. It's just really really wierd like that. It's a good story, and it's fairly well written, and I kind of like the romantic angst. But there are several things about it that just really grate on my nerves.
For one thing the main character is apparently too gorgeous to be true, and is fawned over by everyone, but it's done in first person, and we're suppose...more

I liked this book at the start, but then it became really annoying about 25% of the way through and the downhill slide continued from there.

Everyone loves Jory, and I do mean *everyone*. They see him and instantly fall head-over-heels in love with them and he brushes them off because he doesn't do commitment. He was such a jerk, I really couldn't like him. (view spoiler)[That whole thing with Nick was really pathetic; he ignores Nick and brushes him off, and then when Nick finally does the same,...more

I don't write reviews, but this book was so disappointing I felt compelled to. The blurb made this sound like gay-cop romance. I love gay-cop romance. But the blurb was misleading.

The 1st person POV meant that the entire story was told from the point of view of Jory--who despite coming from a difficult past filled with abandonment, is too normal and sane to be real. The author paints him as a guy who sleeps around a lot, but it never happens in the story. The only element of it that is in the s...more

Perfection thy name is Mary Calmes.

This book was perfectly angsty, perfectly hot, perfectly passionate, perfectly action packed, perfectly amusing... and if that's not enough perfection for you...

It was a perfect cliff-hanger too.

Jory and Sam are the greatest "love to hate you" "thin line between love and hate" couple that I've ever read before and I think there's a huge possibility that I just may be a little bit in love with Jory, Sam and Jory's boss Dane. Me? Have a harem with these three men...more

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Woo boy. I'm not really sure where to start. Oh, wait - first and foremost, I want to warn readers who are interested in purchasing A Matter of Time (Book I) that it is not a stand-alone book. It ends with nothing really resolved - not what I'd call a cliffhanger, exactly, but something similar...and it just sort of cuts off mid-sentence. By the time you get to the end of Book II...and Book III...you'll see that each of them do, too. And despite it's many, many fla...more

This story is well-written and best of all, it’s a story. There is a real plot, relatable characters, and people work! While there is heat and a little bit of sex, although honestly not much in this first book, the dynamics and inter-connectedness between all of the characters is truly the pull, and leaves you wanting more.

This is a very easy read and the plot and characters will pull you in. The sex is hot, but don’t read this expecting a lot of scenes or anything too detailed – that comes late...more

Loved it! Just loved it! I am glad that I read the great reviews of this and bought it and the next two all at the same time from Fictionwise.

I woke up at 4:30 am and thought to do a bit of reading to help me get back to sleep. The story was a bit slow to pull me in, and there were moments when Jory's personality almost irritated me, but then I was sucked in and didn't turn back. At 8:00 am I gave up on the idea of sleeping and got some tea to drink in bed and kept reading. I finished Books I,...more

Wow. This is a fantastic book. How have I not read this before???

I loved Sam and Jory! There were both very likable characters. I loved their development and even the struggles that Sam went through being in the closet. The plot was great too. Mary Calmes knows how to write good romance with awesome sexual tension. I was very entertained every step of the way which is very rare. I tend to skim at one point or another with most books.

I must confessed that I was sort of hoping that Dane and Jory w...more

I presume you know what the book is about. I'm letting you know what I liked or disliked about it.

WOW! I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

I'd never heard of the author before - Mary Calmes - but I sure know the name now!

Really, truly you should read this book. The main characters Jory and Sam are.... unique, and different, and funny, and endearing, and well Jory is all those things times 100 and Sam well he sure is intense and that intensity had me thinking about the book as I went through the norm...more

Oh, what a steamy book! Naughty naughty! I am ashamed and yet also proud (how does that work) to admit that I am a fan of the romance genre. I love the quick stories that Harlequin offers and I wanted that kind of style but with gay characters. You know, to switch it up a bit. Enter "A Matter of Time" (Book One) by Mary Calmes. I read some favourable reviews about this 4 book series, and the fact that it was dirt cheap on Kindle also helped.

The following may contain minor spoilers, but nothing m...more

Jory is 22, gay and having fun cruising bars. He's the screw and go type. He gets a phone call while he's out from his friend Anna. She finally decided to leave her abusive husband and she needed Jory's help. See she couldn't take her dog George with her cause that would of tipped the husband off. She asked Jory to go pick up the dog. Jory being the good friend he is went. It didn't go as planned.

Turns out that the abusive husband was also a drug dealer. The police had been watching him and had...more

Holy crap... Not sure even where to start on this, but as you can see I reserved my review for the last and fourth book rather that writing it on the first or each one, but decided to post it here as well. Always save the best for last I say.

First, I'll warn any who do want to read this series of one of the best damn series I've ever read that if you're going to purchase the first book to read it you better be ready to purchase them all. Why you might ask: Because each book ends on a cliffhange...more

Why can't this author use commas?! Where is the copy editing?! I'm not copy nut, but the bad grammar and lack of punctuation are really driving me crazy. It's distracting. And why is Jory such a siren? It's weird.

These characters need therapy. It annoys me for authors to write dominant people as abusive a-holes and submissives as understanding doormats. This dynamic worked brilliantly in Stockholm Syndrome because both characters were emotionally damaged and they fit together like lock and key....more

(since I'd rather just put this book out of my head, and since I know it's got a ton of fans, I'm not going to rate it. Also, this is pretty much a repost - with some edits - of a Facebook post I made while listening to the audiobook.)

I've come to the realization that I hate "informed perfect" characters, characters who we're told are perfect with no back up, and sweet Mother of bishouen sparkles is Jory/Jin/Stef (because they seem to be the same character, really) super mega mcawesome perfect....more

Actually the starter was okay, here we go and see a gay guy with a balls and flipped a murder at the police station but after that it becomes too much.

1. Too many coincidences meetings between Jory and Sam. Jory went to the club he met Sam, Jory went to other club he met Sam, Jory went somewhere he met Sam. coincident. Because how could Sam know where Jory was, they did not communicate and definitely Sam didn't planted a bug on Jory.

2. Jory is too.... perfect. Everyone said how beautiful he is,...more

I really enjoyed this story! Jory Keyes is a 22 year old office assistant at a prestigious architecture firm, who, when doing a favor for a friend, finds himself in a very precarious position; which leads him to Detective Sam Kage. Detective Kage is overbearing, loud and firmly in the closet. Door shut, locked, bolted, and chained. Unfortunately for Jory, that little fact doesn't stop him from falling in love with Sam. Sam, however, is not ready to upend his life for Jory or anyone else and is,...more

I actually bought parts I and II at the same time, then got halfway through part I and ordered III and IV.

Sam Kage is as straight as they come. Jory Keyes is not. A reluctant witness to a murder, for some reason every time Jory turns round, Sam is there. Every single time. Making him, getting him home. And shouting at him. A lot.

Jory isn't looking for Mr Right and Sam isn't looking for Mr Anything but that's what they end up with. But this isn't a HEA - at least, not in part I anyway. This book...more

When I picked this up I wasn't sure that I would like it, especially after reading the covers for all four books. It sounded utterly depressing. Don't be fooled. This is an Amazing series. You have to read the next book to find out what happened, and then the next book and then the next book until you have completed the series. I think I would have had a conniption fit if book four wasn't the last book in the series.

There is enough going on to keep your attention. All of the characters were beau...more

Wtf! Big action and cliffhanger at the very end, just when I thought things were calming down and everyone had gotten their shit together?!

Ugh, this is me hooked, snagged, and about to purchase book 2 *sigh*

I feel like a sheep, a little lamb, rather, that everywhere Mary went I was sure to go.

So anyway, typical Calmes issues: too much perfection in her MC's (seriously, she needs to retire the word beautiful); too much insta-love, acceptance, saviour-complex and worship of the protagonist; same C...more

Dang, I put my review in the wrong place. The structure of these four books, and the multiple printings, is so confusing that it's hard to put the reviews where they belong. For my combined review of "Books" 1 and 2, look here:

3.5 stars. Jory is awesome. I love Dane. Sam had his tender moments when he and Jory first got together, then he turned slapable. I'm sure he'll redeem himself eventually. The only issue I have is with the punctuation and editing, but that's just me being anal.
