When it comes to magazine back issues National Geographic is perhaps one of the most ubiquitous products on the market. It will not take you long to start finding ex-Library hard bound editions containing all of a given years run stitched together like a book on eBay.

That being said given that it's been in continuous publication since 1888 it would become both expensive and space consuming to collect all the 100+ bound editions needed to collect the whole thing. That being said given that it's been in continuous publication since 1888 it would become both expensive and space consuming to collect all the 100+ bound editions needed to collect the whole thing. So it's much more practical to just pick up a copy of them all on 6 DVDs (or 30 CDs on slightly older editions).

I bought it recently and my version has everything up through 2008 and to be honest it will take me a very long time to read everything if I ever do. Basically the value this product offers is a direct reflection of the magazine itself which is part academic journal and part pop entertainment these days.

You could hardly go wrong if you have kids in the house needing source material for school and that's in pretty much any grade right into college. A good marker whether this worth getting for your child would be to start picking up some current issues and see how well they do in terms of reading comprehension in handling them. It's probably a little over the heads of most Kindergarteners unless you read it to them and explain things for instance. That said I would not be surprised if within say 3-5 years they are able to investigate it on their own but still have some questions of course.

Keep in mind that when I first started to read it I was in the 2nd grade and it was one of the few source materials available to scholars our age interested in topless women...

In my experience most kids are going to get to that sooner or later and the parent who is actively engaged with their kids education can probably do a lot worse than this. National Geographic is probably a lot more respectful than your average girlie magazine but all the same it is something to be aware of.

As to adults it goes without saying you will also learn a lot from this. I'm not aware that it's been adapted for any of the eReaders like the iPad or Kindle just yet but I read it on my 27" iMac and it does just dandy. If you do try to adapt it to one of the readers the iPad is really the only choice I see because one of the strongest points to the publication is it's famed photography.

In fact if you did buy this and found you had a young researcher as I once was interested in the photography that's probably a good strategy to steer the topic to the photography more broadly. Even if they don't grow up to be a National Geographic photographer it might just fire their imagination and even give them a more balanced view of the human figure in photography.

Of course I am a photographer so I'd be a bit prejudiced perhaps.(less)
