Jayne Ann Krentz often writes of thing magical and mystical. This is one of those. Fun to read, but you have to take that leap of imagination to get into the characters and conflicts that make up this story.

Book 1 of the Dreamlight Trilogy. I do love the psychic books that Krentz comes up with, and this reminded me of her earlier books Gift of Gold and Gift of Fire. This book was a little bit of a let down however. Right away I found some typo's (one character is referred to as "Sharon" one one page and "Susan" ten pages later) and some jarring repetition in conversations (the hero's age is mentioned three times in two pages- almost like Krentz forgot she already established it a page before and a...more

Part one of the Dreamlight trilogy contained within the Arcane Society series. When former friends turned enemies, Nicholas Winters and Sylvester Jones, tried to find a way to enhance psychic energies, they chose different paths. Sylvester used chemistry to create a flawed formula that has bedeviled the Society ever since. Nicholas used his engineering skills to forge the Burning Lamp whose radiation caused a twist in his DNA. This mutation will cause the man who inherits the Winters' talent to...more
I enjoyed this latest installment of the Arcane Society series.
In this book, set in present day, Jack Winters, descendent of Nicholas Winters - who irrevocably changed his DNA by experiments on himself to compete with Arcane Society founder Sylvester Jones in augmenting his psychic abilities - is trying to control the second talent he has recently gained.
Knowing that his former friend Fallon Jones will hunt him down and kill him if he discovers Winters has developed the second talent, he is hunt...more

It’s been a while since I’ve read an adult romance and I have read all the books in the Arcane series (up to this one), so I decided to pick Fired Up, which I had bought a few years back.
I’m going to do a short review on this book. If you’ve read Jayne Ann Krentz before you know that her stories are very similar, I enjoy it more when she writes under Amanda Quick, her historical romance pseudonym. There is usually a misunderstood and very strong willed man and an equally strong woman with an ‘i...more

Hmmm, as a whole the "Dreamlight Trilogy" section of the Arcane Society series is not my favorite, largely because the plots--especially the romance plotlines--of each of these three are almost exactly the same. In each case, we have a female Dreamlight reader who believes herself incapable of longterm romantic relationships due to her discomfort being in the presence of others while they sleep. Yet low and behold! Here comes the hero, in desperate need of her assistance (okay, like that aspect...more

Not good enough to interest me in the sequels. Nothing special about this story. I don’t recommend it.
PLOT PREMISE:
In the 1600s Nicholas Winters had a psychic talent. He altered his DNA and created a vase with crystals (called a lamp). Women who had psychic talent involving dreams would be the only ones able to activate the lamp’s power. Through the lamp, these women would be able to increase and/or change a man’s psychic powers. Only men with Nicholas’s “special DNA” would be affected. Also, on...more

Ah...the Arcane Society. I enjoy Ms. Krentz' Arcane books. This one was quite nice. Unlike other readers, I like that the stories are interconnected but about a different couple each time. It's comfortable and familiar and I know what I'm getting. I don't have to try to figure out a new world premise with each book. I do have a tendency to like the ones set in the current time the best, although the others are nice too.

Another "escape book" and quick read (sort of sci-fi but not exactly), but action-packed and entertaining. It's vintage Jayne Ann Krentz, who has apparently decided to write lots of books about the Arcane Society, a group of people with unique and varied paranormal skills and abilities.
Chloe Harper is a psychic private investigator and reader of dream energy--the energy vibes given out, and left behind, by everyone when they dream. Jack Winters hires her to help him uncover the truth about his...more

I enjoyed this one, the current book in the Arcane Soceity series, always intrigued by the idea of paranormal powers and secret societies for good and evil - a bit cliched, but done well is enjoyable.

I'm not in love with the fact that Krentz has decided that all her stories will involve the Arcane Society but this story had a lot of the elements which made me such a Krentz fan in the first place.
Chloe is a pyschic investigator. She can find pretty much anything. She also is a dreamlight reader in that she can manipulate the dreams of others.

I have seen good reviews about Jayne Ann Krentz's books so I was rather hoping that I would be completely caught up in this book, especially because it is the first in her Arcane Society series. Normally I will not stop at just one book and am compelled to read an entire series whether or not completely like it. However, this is one of those rare moments where I am not going to probably continue the series. The plot seemed interesting but I don't feel like it was presented in a way that actual m...more
Another riveting entry into the Arcane Society novels written by Krentz under all three of her writing names. Krentz writes in modern times, Amanda Quick writes in Victorian times, and Jayne Castle writes futuristically. These novels cross all three.

Wow! JAK has fired off another awesome Arcane Novel! Fired Up is an incredibly well-paced, fascinating paranormal romantic suspense. Even though the romance is the least well-developed part of this book, and the characters are not fleshed out as well as I usually like, I was completely, happily absorbed by this story. JAK is fabulous at weaving together separate story lines and building the tension. I love how she is jumping around in history, and connecting the stories of her historical paranor...more

Well, I was a little disappointed in this book but I have never read Jayne Ann Krentz until now. I chose this book because I purchased The Burning Lamp by Amanda Quick on sale and I never read a series out of order if I can help it. I have enjoyed all the Amanda Quick books I have listened to on audio immensely. They usually have Barbara Rosenblat read her books and she could make the phone book sound amazing. Anyway, I digress and does anyone use the phone book anymore?

The modern chapter of the Dreamlight Trilogy, another addition to the Arcane Society tales. Jack Winters is a descendant of the genetically altered paranormal genius Nicholas Winters. Unfortunately, the legacy is accompanied by a curse and destiny to become a monster if he begins manifesting more than one talent unless he finds the Burning Lamp and a woman who can manipulate the dreamlight energy that it can produce. This was a nice, light, entertaining and even humorous paranormal romantic suspense book. The dialogue and the repartee between the hero and the heroine even had me smiling and laughing a little to myself as I was reading.

This Arcane Society novel takes a different tack from the previous ones in the series. In this book we meet Jack Winters, descendant of Nicholas Winters, alchemist and fierce rival of Sylvester Jones. Like Sylvester, Nicholas also undertook experiments in an attempt to enhance his psychic powers. Like Sylvester, Nicholas's experiments had unwanted side effects. He managed to alter his DNA but with tragic consequences. Once in a while a Winters is born who is doomed to psychic madness. The only h...more

Chloe Harper reads dreamlight and can manipulate the patterns that exist between the waking and sleeping states. While Sylvester was working on his formula, Nicholas was working on a lamp—manipulating metals to create an energy fi...more

What can I say? It's classic Krentz :) As a fan of the Arcane Society novels, I pretty much knew what to expect, and was not disappointed.
I really liked the direction the Dreamlight concept appears to be taking the series -- previous novels in the series (such as The Third Circle I believe) eluded to unlocking dream energy, and this book takes that and runs with it.
One thing that saddened me was that Fallon Jones didn't get a romance.. If you've followed the micro-novel on Twitter,...more

I'll be honest. If you give me a book by Amanda Quick or Jayne Castle, I will read it in a heartbeat, but when it came to books written under the Jayne Ann Krentz name, that was another story.
The same author writes under all three names, but Amanda Quick is historical and Jayne Castle is future, whereas the Jayne Ann Krentz were modern day. There was just always something about them that I could not get into. But, since this was Arcane Society, and I really like those, and this was number One i...more

I love every one of Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick's paranormal stories. Unfortunately, I've read so many of them, they're starting to blend together in my mind because they seem to all have similar elements in them: the men are brooding and tough, the girl always gets kidnapped after they think the case gets solved, and their paranormal abilities are always off-the-charts high. This in no way diminishes my enjoyment in the story, it just can become slightly repetitive.

This genre is a new addition to my favorites list. That said, I started with the best (Dresden Files, Mercy Thompson). This book definitely demonstrated that it is not a simple thing to make urban fantasy work.
Throughout this book, I was thinking that it was not believable. I guess it doesn't seem like urban/paranormal fantasies need to be believable, but you do have to be able to place yourself in the world, and if there are enough significant discrepancies, it is hard.

A new author to my ever-growing list of those I've read, though not among a top ten, sadly. She's good, engrossing, good smattering of humor thrown in among the story line, but just not one I simply couldn't put down.

This Arcane Society tale is the first book of the Dreamlight trilogy, which occurs in the present; books two and three will be in the Victorian Era and the far future on Planet harmony respectively. I really enjoyed that the main characters, in this novel, do not necessarily think the Jones family are the end-all, be-all in the para-sensitive world. It opened new avenues to explore, with ongoing relationships, and revealed some much needed character foibles.

For some reason, this wasn’t quite as satisfying a read as the others in this series have been. The protagonist, Jack Winter doesn’t seem to be as confident and self-assured as the Jones boys. Maybe that’s a good thing, though. The Jones boys can be over top and a bit too full of themselves at times.
The series seems to be continually evolving. You learn more and more of the whole picture, as you keep on reading. I wonder if this series will actually end, though. The battle between good and evil...more
