This was a "bluidy" good book! The time-frame of the book is 1745, not quite a year before the Battle of Culloden. Catherine is young and in love, but not with the man she is currently kissing out in the garden. Alexander is brash and bold, but not in love with the woman he is currently kissing out in the garden.

But due to the rashness of youth and a bet gone awry, they are now married to one another. So begins the war of the Scottish and the English, but this war is contained between one sligh...more

Sometimes books purchased in the spur of the moment leave you with a sour taste in your mouth after you read them, but sometimes (very few times, for me), they turn out to be truly remarkable stories with gripping plots, wonderful characters, great dialogue, and even greater chemistry – both between the leading couple and other characters. The first two books in Marsha Canham's Highlands trilogy, The Pride of Lions and The Blood of Roses, turned out to be one of those rare gems with a firmly ing...more

Isn't this supposed to be a romance? Aren't romances supposed to have HEAs? If the answer is yes to both these questions, something is seriously wrong. Not only does this not end happily, it actually doesn't end at all, it just...quits. Yep, right in the middle of the story (albeit 367 pages of it.) Not only is the romance left hanging, every single part of the plot is also left hanging. Will she forgive him? Will he find her? What will happen in the War? What will happen with her ex.?... everyt...more

Now this is what a historical romance is all about...

I had grown weary of your typical HR, as I found they were repeated story lines, all jumbling together and becoming more and more cheese as my reading tastes advanced. So, I put aside the HR Genre and found myself delving into stories with more substance.

Lately, I have been finding reading in general has become a chore, it seemed every book I picked up I would start with the best intentions but in the end was unable to get through the first...more

This book had great parts and some really not-so-great parts. I loved the historical setting that begins about a year before the Jacobite Uprising of 1745, which is a fascinating piece of history and the author goes to great trouble to weave actual events and characters into the story. However, the book doesn't end. It just stops. You HAVE to go on to read The Blood of the Rose to get the next bit. Even that book doesn't really end. It just stops where it stops (no spoilers here.) I haven't gott...more

Marsha Canham yine yaptı yapacağını Benim Ebedi Aşkımda Haçlı Savaşlarına,Demir Gül'de Korsan Savaşlarını anlatırken adete yaşattı diyebilirim..
Belki biraz fazla detaylı anlatıyor diye düşünülebilirse de bence olayları size kazıtarak anlatıyor adeta dönemi yaşıyorsunuz..

This is the third series I have started by Marsha Canham. I loved her Dante Pirates, and Robin Hood books. She has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Especially when it comes to historical fiction.

In The Pride of Lions Catherine tries to make Hamilton Garner jealous. She's had her sights set on him and is hoping to get a marriage proposal from him at her 18th birthday party. She dances with Alex Cameron, the handsome rouge who is a friend of her brothers, and one thing leads to another....more

Güzel kitaptı,mekan betimlemeleriyle içinde gibi hissettiriyordu ama;
Öncelikle bir romance olarak catherine in kitabın çoğunda hamilton a aşık olması,ana çiftten çok lauren ın ilişkilerini okumak, bol bol alex in eski karısına nasılda aşık olduğunu görmek bana biraz tuhaf geldi açıkcası çok da hoşlandığımı söyleyemem bu durumdan...
Bunun yanında bolca politik ve tarihi eleştiri ve bilgi "hadi bi' historical romance okuyup biraz eğleniyim,güleyim, mutlu sonlar vs" günümde gerçekten o kadarda eğlence...more

If you don't know me you don't know I'm a HUGE fan of the Outlander Series by Diana Gabaldon. She's an excellent writer and her story is set before and after the Battle of Culloden or the 45 in Scottish history. Being a major fan of Scottish everything I have just been so interesting in anything I could get my hands on so fictional (yet woven with historical facts) stories are some of my favorite and so when julielu commented about this book and it's sequel I had to PaperBackSwap them from her.

This book was a recent purchase which I admit to not having very high hopes for. I have read some reviewers comparing this to Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series which I adore, but wasn't sure how a straight romance novel would live up to this comparison. I will have to admit I was very pleasantly suprised and found this book to be much more than I was expecting.
This book contains everything one might expect a historical romance to have. The hasty unwanted wedding to a complete stranger who is not...more

If I rated this book purely on my enjoyment of it, I would give it a firm 3.5 stars. However, I think it deserve 4.5 stars based on the research and historical view and references it contains. This book was written a while back and I think the research employed was outstanding. Reading it as a romance, it was a bit lacking.

I loved the "leave 'em wanting" end. Loved it. The characters came into their relationship - true relationship, late in the book. Almost as an afterthought. I'm excited to rea...more

What is it about the Scottish Highlands that speaks to that romantic side of me, that hidden princess that wants to be saved by her gallant prince? Is it the Scottish man..... strong, stubborn, proud, laying down his life for his country, his kin and his one and only true love. In the Pride of Lions and in its sequel, the Blood of Roses, Marsha Canham has transported me back in time to that unique place in history where lairds ruled and battles were fought with swords over land and love.

Maybe because I just read Outlander which fascinated me or perhaps because I thought Straight for the Heart is a wonderful little novel by Canham full of feisty characters, intrigue and lots of adventure, I was disappointed in this effort. The heroine is unbearable, immature, winy, with no sense of reality (but perhaps, she is well depicted, since she IS a spoiled aristocratic 18 year old thrust into real life, so to speak). I couldn't fathom what changed Kitty's mind from hate to love towards h...more

Beş yıldızı verdim gitti . Ama o ne çaçaron kızdı öyle yahu ? Bir ara dedim ki , '' tamam arkadaş , Alex artık kendini tutamayıp Catherine 'e sağlı sollu iki tane asılacak . Oh, Marsha Canham! How I love your books. This story is the first in a trilogy set in the Highlands of Scotland. It starts off slow and the heroine is difficult and unlikable. This is the only reason for 4 stars. Alexander Cameron has been banned from his highland home for 15 years and gets in duel and ends up being forced to marry Catherine, while in disguise and living in England. Through different circumstances he ends up taking her home to Scotland against her will. Cameron is a complex char...more

It's hard for me to take this book seriously. Even though there are some interesting historical references to the Second Uprising, the story is largely about the romance between Alex Cameron and Catherine Ashbrooke, and frankly, I never believed in their chemistry. Catherine was, for the most part, superficial and annoying, and after one sexual encounter with the husband she hates (but is inexplicably drawn to) and a week at the castle in the company of the womenfolk, she suddenly decides that s...more

I was reading through the reviews of This Novel here on goodreads and one of the members quoted "This author did a significant amount of research giving us an incredible in-depth view of the events leading up to the 1745 battle at Culloden. There just happens to be a rather steamy love story thrown in on the side. "

I Agree , and its great if you like reading college textbooks on History. I DON'T

I had to force myself to read through "like" the middle of the book. Boring, Boring.

Romance novels set in the Scottish Highlands are a particular favourite of mine. I had just finished reading all of Julie Garwood's novels set in Scotland, I found myself wanting more. So I did a bit of looking around on Goodreads and came across Marsha Canham and thought it sounded right up my alley and promptly ordered all three in this series.
Well I was not disappointed.
I found myself flying through "The Pride of Lions" and trying to catch 5 minutes wherever I could to sit and read a few more...more

This was an incredible read, but not for the faint of heart. This is not your typical historical romance novel. This author did a significant amount of research giving us an incredible in-depth view of the events leading up to the 1745 battle at Culloden. There just happens to be a rather steamy love story thrown in on the side. It is not an easy or fast read, but it is definitely well worth the investment of time. If you are looking for a well written novel, fascinating characters, and learning...more

3.5 rating... averaged between a three for characterization and some of the usual well worn tropes of romance, and a four as an exciting page turner. This is where I think Canham really excels as a writer. Her books are often very quick paced and exciting, with a good mix of romance, history and adventure. I am always completely sucked in and never want to put them down once I start reading them. The heroine, Catherine, is a little harder to warm up to. She is an insufferable, spoiled brat in th...more

I got out the Blood of Roses from the library and was terribly disappointed--a very long dragged out, really boring book. Since it was Part 2 of this series, the many references to The Pride of Lions gave me the impression that I might like this book a bit more than its sequal. Well, I did, but just a bit. This book is definitely better written and organized however, the heroine is way more obnoxious in this earlier story. She was supposed to have grown considerable in this book--which indeed sh...more

Loved this book but there is a sequel, and it's not about another couple. That's all I'm going to say. Super annoying.

I was not as charmed or impressed by this book as I was by Canham's Pale Moon Rider. And, I am slightly annoyed by the ending. I couldn't stand Catherine and her spoiled beezy attitudes. By the time she changed enough to be remotely likeable, the book ends with the preamble for a new novel. THAT means I have to read the next in the series if I want to take this to a satisfying conclusion.

BUT, what if I continue down this road and STILL don't like Catherine? It's like Moning's Fever series all o...more

I loved this book! What a great find. I just saw this book recommended at the Amazon forum about a "spoiled, rich & beautiful heroine" who was tamed by the hero.

I never knew the author but I'm glad I was able to discover a gem. The story was set in England & Scotland year 1745. The hero is a Scotsman Spy & the heroine, a spoiled english debutante. It's fast paced, full of action, adventure & emotion. This is epic. Like reading Judith McNaught's historicals. I can never find anoth...more

This to me was what I always assumed a historical romance would be. It was rich in traditions, lavish beautiful landscapes, deceptions, violence, family strife and the threat of war. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, even though the heat level I would give it a 3, I couldn't stop reading this book. The combativeness and tension and honestly hatred between the hero and heroine captivated me. Would they ever like each other, never mind actually fall in love? And at the end they fall in love and then...more

A sweeping Scottish saga and a drool-worthy Highlander Hero!

You won't regret buying this book! First in Canham's Scottish trilogy set in 18th century Scotland and England (PRIDE OF LIONS, BLOOD OF ROSES and MIDNIGHT HONOR), it tells the story of pampered English beauty Catherine Ashbrooke and Alexander Cameron, the Scottish Highlander who wins her in a duel. He carries his reluctant bride off to the Highlands where clan feuds and fomenting rebellion will sweep them into historic events and where...more

First of Marsha Canham's Highland series, this book may be a bit puzzling to those who are not familiar with highland Scots lingo.
Other than that everything a historical fictionist could want is in here, romance, defiance, adventure, violence, kidnapping and fiery passion. The first chapter was rather boring and I did not know what to expect but once past that, the novel opens up and I read on eagerly.
Against the background of Bonnie Prince Charlie's bid to claim the British throne by asking for...more

I don't even know where to begin this book was so amazing. I could not put it down, I started reading it Saturday night and finished it Sunday night, barely able to tear myself away to eat during the day.

Marsha Canham has done a brilliant job of combining a great story with history and painting beautiful pictures within her pages. You can't help but love the characters in this story, even though Catherine in her spoiled ways takes some warming up too. Alexander Cameron Is a highlander who wins...more

“Note savages, eh? They live in mountain caves and dress like wild men. They walk about in woolen petticoats, which they are not in the least modest about casting aside when they need their sword arms free. Dash me, can you even begin to imagine the sight of a horde of naked, hairy-legged creatures charging at you across a battlefield like bloody fiends out of hell—screaming and flailing those great bloody swords and axes of theirs like scythes? Not savages?” 5 people liked it
“How can love be frightening?"

"When it consumes you. When it binds you to all other considerations. When you can no longer distinguish right from wrong, love becomes a terrible burden and it can destroy you as readily as it can save you."

Catherine pondered the words carefully, then sighed. "I don't think I would ever want to be that much in love.”
