Ms. Ashe has written a romance of epic proportions with her debut novel, SWEPT AWAY BY A KISS. She has gained another loyal

Regrettably, this book did not sweep me away. I was so excited to get a book that took place on a the high seas with pirates, but that was quickly diminished, mostly because I had a very hard time connecting with Valerie, who came off as to stubborn for her own good. She made rash decisions that seemed foolish to me, and pointless in the growth of the story. I liked Steven, for the most part, but there were times that I though he was a bit to assuming, as to what he expected Valerie to do for hi...more
I have never heard of Katharine Ashe and picked up this novel simply because it was endorsed by Lisa Kleypas as "a breathtaking romance". She wasn't exaggerating.
Taking place in Regency England, the book begins with the heroine, Valerie Monroe, returning to London after a 2-year stay with relatives in Boston. The ship she sails on is overtaken by pirates and the nasty, creepy leader gets his jollies by tying Valerie up in an intricate knot system and forcing a Jesuit priest to untie her. His re...more

Katharine has wrote a winning historical romance. As I read this book I actually found myself living as the herione in the book. Valarie and Stephen have a very complicated relationship because of circumstances that throws them together.
Lady Valarie has trouble of her own. She was a very rebelious daughter when it came to her father. She would do things to bring negative attention to herself so she could get some attention from her father. Been there have done that myself in the past. I guess th...more

I loved this book. From the very beginning I was swept up in the adventure and couldn't put it down. Valerie is headstrong, but not in a way that is annoying. She knows what she wants, but is mature about gaining it. There are no fits or temper-tantrums. She just wants to be treated as if she can make up her own mind and doesn't want to be lied to. Ashford, on the other hand, isn't as easy to understand. He is honorable and fighting for justice, but his actions are sometimes hard to figure out....more

Wow. What an intense read. It captured my attention almost immediately. I couldn't put it down! Absolutely great. I love that the hero wanted so badly to stay away from the heroine so she wouldn't get hurt with what he was part of. But he just couldn't do it. He was drawn towards her. I just love it when their desire is so strong it over powers their state of mind. They forget themselves and what their purpose is. He even went as far as to intentionally say cruel things to hurt her. Because sinc...more
My rating for this book is definitely average. Though the plot is original and I loved both the adventure and the romantic elements, I found one too many deficiencies in the storyline, lose ends and things that, if you are paying attention, did not make sense. I also found the story dragged whenever the main characters were together, going in circles about the SAME elements of their conflict.
In a nutshell, this is a story I could have loved, the plot had great potential but it fell rather short....more

Intially the premise caught my attention however it didn't maintain my attention. This was the only book where I felt throwing it across the room. The heroine, Valerie, was just an impulsive, selfish, and attention-seeking individual. I wouldn't want to talk to her even though the author describes her as an intelligent being. Oh please if she was intelligent shouldn't she stay away. I'm on the fence right now to finish the book because we all know how these historical "romances" ends. Otherwise...more
A man on a mission. A woman escaping her past. Wow!
It has been a long time since I've picked up a historical romance novel that swept me away (pun intended) as Katharine Ashe's did. OMG, the tension between Steven and Valerie leaps off the pages and left this reader punching her book a couple of times... (kiss dammit, kiss) - Lord, the 'rope' scene {no this isn't an erotic romance} Hot, hot, hot.

Çok sinir oluyorum, şu güzelim kurguları mahfeden yazarlara. Çok üzülüyorum, bu ziyan olmuş kurgulara. İşte öyle bir kitapla daha karşı karşıyayız şu an.

Two to two and a half stars.
Boy, I struggled to finish this book, and that's not a good thing. There were some really compelling set pieces in the book. The heroine is horrified that she's attracted to a mysterious priest and then the ship is overtaken by pirates! It starts strong, but bogged down from the middle to the end. I had trouble keeping track of the villains as there were similar names floating around, and she switched from first and last names.

Deciding on a rating for this book was hard. So many things about it were superb, but others were sufficiently aggravating enough that I developed a kind of love-hate relationship with this story.
Ashe composes extremely well written prose with intelligent, PBS-worthy dialogue - definitely a strength of hers. What a wonderful story this turned out to be. It had its usual misunderstandings and miscommunications. But once the heroine, Valerie, decided on her course, she did not allow the hero, Steven, to sway her. I loved that even though he was rude and mean at times, she seemed to be able to see right through it.

Katharine Ashe has created a remarkable blend of history and romance in this novel.
She introduces us to main characters Valerie Monroe and Steven Ashford. It becomes clear that Valerie is escaping an unpleasant situation of some sort, having gained passage aboard a merchant ship. Steven is in disguise as a Jesuit priest. Steven boards the merchant ship that Valerie is on. This ship is then attacked by pirates, and Steven attempts to protect Valerie, hurtling them both into love's hurricane.

On her way back home to England, Lady Valerie Monroe’s ship is attacked by pirates. Valerie is no fainting miss, but she is relieved that she is not alone in her imprisonment. A French priest has been taken prisoner alongside her, but something tells her that the priest is more than he seems…and she’s right.

first I got intrigue and then it got exciting and I got bored. So many emotions are shifting in me. the story took so long for both the h/h to get through there themselves. One thing I noticed with this author, is that the heroine is too much hooked up with the hero. It is like the heroine is the one who is deep in love with the hero. I had fun reading the first part, but then the story took so long.
I just wished the floe of the story, will be more forward. Nevertheless I enjoyed it also.

An interesting premise and fairly good writing. But the characters just don't make any sense! The decisions they make are completely unmotivated, seemingly tied more to the needs of the plot than any intelligible emotional logic. I kept thinking that perhaps this was a sequel, with much of the info about these characters given already in a previous book, but no, this is the author's first published title...
I really liked the characters in this book. Stephen, who masqueraded as a priest for the first part of the book, and Valerie were a good couple and I enjoyed their interactions. However, there were just too many times that I thought they were on the same page and were growing as a couple... and then Steven would pull back and act like he didn't know Valerie again (for her own good, he thought). A few times, okay. But it just went way too far, including to the very end of the book. This somewhat...more
This was a good book. Actually, a great book.
The only thing that I find wrong is the sudden shifting of scenes. Sometimes I reread the lines to make sure I didn't miss something but the book really does that.
I love Valerie. She's an innocent who knows her own allure and uses it to get what she wants.
Steven is a complex man. Sometimes he's really charming and sometimes, he's cold as an iceberg and I don't even know if he's doing it on purpose. I like how the book started when he was Etienne the p...more

I really enjoyed this book. The hero battles illegal slave traders so that was a nice change. The heroine isn't some insipid, whimpering miss either so big points there. But once again, my nemesis reared its ugly head. Can there be no other conflict between the lovers besides "will I - won't he?" Can these writers, as talented as they obviously are, think of nothing else to separate or estrange their characters? I'm begging, with complete understanding that I've never written anything nor do I h...more
Thoroughly enjoyed this book-- pirates, priests, ships, castles, intrigue, and a lot of passion! I've never read such a well done "scandalous" lady, with a reputation for being loose. Those are hard to do and still make them likable, but Valerie was very endearing. I also enjoyed the two distinct halves of the book. Without giving spoilers, I'll just say that you get two distinct settings, and ALMOST two distinct heroes. Lots of fun! I recommend it!
I can read most romance novels really quickly, but not this one. It just dragged. Talks of fates and dreams that don't really matter or are explained, too much hemming and hawing about the relationship, but not enough funny or interaction to make it worthwhile. Probably wouldn't read another one by this author.
Un prêtre, un pirate, un espion et un lord anglais rakish dans le même homme ! En plus, ils parlent un peu en français dans ce bouquin et l'héroïne est géniale.
