Blaze of Memory tells the story of Devraj Santos, the director of Shine, and Katya, a damaged Psy with amnesia. Ekaterina, aka Katya, is dropped off at the headquarters of Shine unconscious, starved and abused. She doesn't remember who she is or what happened to her except in nightmares she can't remember upon waking. Dev knows she is probably a Trojan horse sent by the Psy to infiltrate Shine, which is the front of the Forgotten who are the descendents of the Psy who broke from the PsyNet at the institution of Silence. Dev spends his life protecting the Shine children from the Psy, who want all of the Forgotten who show signs of Psy gifts to be killed. He has become a hard man due to methods he needs to use to keep his people safe. Dev has also become colder due to his affinity to metal, which allows him to read machines but also slowly seeps into his blood and makes him less human and more cold Psy.

Katya starts to remember bits and pieces of her torture. She knows Ming LeBon messed with her head, commiting a psychic rape of everything in her mind and replacing it with his own compulsion. She is afraid she will become a dangerous traitor because Ming could overcome her free will at anytime. She has an instant affinity to Dev when she meets him. She knows he is a hard man who will protect Shine's interests at all costs but she can't help but be fascinated by him, which is a surprise to Katya because she never felt before Ming destroyed her conditioning. We find out very quickly that Katya was programmed to find out all she can about Shine and the Forgotten - then kill Devraj and herself, so we spend most of the book wondering when the programming will rear it's ugly head.

Dev decides to keep Katya close to him to determine whether she was put there on purpose to do harm to Shine. He knows she is probably going to turn on him but he feels protective toward her due to the abuse she suffered. Dev takes Katya to his home to keep her away from everyone while she tries to regain her memory. Katya knows her mind is compromised but she bravely tries to recapture her life. Dev is helplessly attracted to her despite knowing she will probably turn on him at any time. They start feeling deeply for each other, even knowing that Katya could unintentionally harm him against her own will. But the time is ticking down because Ming set a timeline that Katya must meet and it could mean both of their deaths.

This story started out a little slower for me because I missed seeing the Changling society I have come to love, but Dev and Katya's story drew me in and had me rooting for them to overcome what seems like truely impossible odds. Katya was a strong character who overcame horrible torture and the rape of her mind only by her own unbendable will. She knows that her time could very well be limited so she lives her life as fully as she can, giving her heart and body to Dev because she loves him and admires the warrior he is for his people. Dev falls for Katya as he sees the courage she shows by fighting Ming's grip on her mind and trying to keep Shine and her friend Ashaya safe. He quickly becomes possessive of her and knows he cannot kill her even if she does turn into a traitor, even wanting to take on the formidable Ming himself to keep her safe. Katya is able to thaw the ice around Dev's heart that was turning into someone as heartless as the Psy, so in a way she saves him too.

I did enjoy Dev and Katya's romance, toward the end I was crying because it was so emotional and my heart was breaking even though I knew the ending just couldn't be sad. Some old friends do show up, as we get to see a bit of Dorian, Ashaya and Keenan. We also got a glimpse of my favorite cat, Lucas, and Sasha so the story was not completely wihout the changlings. Judd also makes a brief but powerful appearance. The story is also interspersed with notes from a Psy mother to her son at the implementation of Silence, which gave an interesting view to events in the book.

Overall, while it was not my favorite book in the series (Lucas and Vaughn's stories hold those spots) I did enjoy the story and the romance. Dev was a good hero, he was possessive of Katya and was willing to fight to keep her with him but was strong enough to do what was best for her. Katya showed a lot of heart and courage by giving herself to Dev despite her bleak future, she just tried to protect Dev and others no matter the cost. The ending was definitely wonderful, I was crying then sighing over happiness. The story was furthered somewhat, we now know a lot more about the Forgotten which could give us clues to the future of the Psy when/if Silence fails.(less)

There are not enough words to express how much I enjoyed this book. I loved everything about this one. I must say that Nalini Singh is a master in paranormal romance. Every book she writes is outstanding. Her writing skills are over the top. And this world she has created keeps surprising me more with each book.

In this book we get another point of view over the psy's world, the develop of the forgotten's story. I must admit that I though I would not be thrilled with this book because I heard that the packs didn't have an important appearance in it, but while reading this wonderful story I didn't even care about the characters of the previous books. The forgotten's story was so entertaining that I just wanted to know more and more about them. I really felt I was watching a movie the whole time.

The beginning was amazing. The chemistry between Dev and Katya was incredible, I couldn't stop reading because I couldn't get enough of them. I loved Dev, he is a great hero, overprotective and very MALE.

And Katya was great too. She was shy at the beginning with the memory loss but then she was a very strong and funny heroine. I think that what I liked most about them is that their relationship felt real. Every aspect of the relationship between them just drawn you more and more towards them.

This is what I love about Nalini Singh's, her stories just are so well written that you get to know both characters really well, and you get to see the relationship unfold. It's not that they see once and that's it, eternity together; you see how they get over every problem step by step, struggling to get to be together. I loved this aspect of the book. I hate when in books the couple meets and at the beginning they are getting straight to bed. In Nalini's books you get to see the couple growing together.

Another thing that I love in a book is when it makes me feel several emotions. This one totally did. I was intrigued at the beginning,laughing my butt off at the middle, and crying like a baby in the end (But don't worry ladies, the HEA is there).

I'm very pleased to report I enjoyed Blaze of Memory MUCH more than the last couple that came out in this series. Dev and Katya were smokin' hot together.

I thought Dev was deliciously alpha- even though he wasn't a changeling- and I loved his psy talent. More importantly I really liked Katya! She was certainly wounded, but I LOVED the way she didn't back down- even to the evil Psy who tried to destroy her. In her last book, Singh tried to make the female an alpha (can't even remember her name) and it didn't work for me- she just came off looking like a little girl "calling herself" an alpha female. Without even trying, Katya became more of a natural leader than that character.

The book ends in nothing less than romantic bliss- be prepared to have your heart melt... and keep the tissues close at hand. :)

Where do i start??
To be honest i was at the start not liking this one, but as i kept with it i was falling hard for Dev, and was enjoying the book.. and Katya she was just so cute!! i really liked her a lot.
I hate Ming i really hope he dies!!
To be honest i really dont like any one on the council apart from Faith dad!!
This had me laughing at some stages, i was made a lot with Dev but what put me over was the Last 4 chapter Shit, i was crying so much,I love that emotional ride it is awesome!!!

I've read the entire series, and this was an unique addition. The author does a great job coming up with highly original storylines and adding to the Psy Changeling world to keep the series fresh. The main characters were different from what we've seen in the past. Instead of a changeling and psy coming together, we saw the interaction between the head of Shine, representing the Forgotten (former psy that are not Silent), and a 'broken' Psy.

The main characters were different from what we've seen in the past. Instead of a changeling and psy coming together, we saw the interaction between the head of Shine, representing the Forgotten (former psy that are not Silent), and a 'broken' Psy.

This is one of those books that picks you up and throws you into the story. Within the first thirty pages I was already emotionally involved and teary eyed over the heroine and what she was going through. I also found the politics with the Psy and Shine to be very interesting. I'd like to read more about Shine and the Forgotten in future books. (Especially Tag & Tiara!) And I liked seeing some of the characters from the previous books as supporting cast--Lucas, Sascha, Judd, Vaughn, etc. The author has done a great job creating a truly original world in the paranormal romance genre.

If you haven't read this author and you like paranormal romance, I recommend giving this series a try. It's one of the better paranormal romance series available and has become one of my favorite series. Great character development, fast paced engrossing storyline, great world building, and good romance. I love how the author develops story arcs that cross books in the series (especially as the series goes on).

I also really enjoyed her newest series Guild Hunter. The style of the Guild Hunter series reminds me of a cross between the Night Huntress books by Frost and the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by Ward. Frost since it follows a hero/heroine throughout the course of the books, the appealing/tough/hardworking/no nonsense heroine, and the fact that heroine is reluctant at first for the relationship. And BDB because of the darker, grittier feel and Raphael is such a hot, tough, alpha bad a$$. The first book is Angels' Blood.

An unconscious woman, who has been severely abused, is left on the doorsteps of the Shine Foundation’s headquarters. She is a Psy and Dev knows she is dangerous because she could be a plant by the Psy Council to kill him. When the woman awakens, she has amnesia. She has been mind raped by a very powerful Psy and Dev places a call to some associates who may be able to tell him the woman’s identity. Another Psy, Ashaya Aleine (Heroine in Hostage to Pleasure), who left the Psy community and mated with a changeling, knows who she is because she used to work with her in a lab where they did experiments on children. Her name is Ekaterina and they come to the conclusion that Ming LeBon, a very deadly and powerful Psy is responsible. Ekaterina no longer wants to be known by this name and will go by Katya. By being called Katya, she feels new and alive. Katya is living a death sentence because as her memory slowly comes back to her, she remembers the orders Lebon gave to her. Whichever way it ends, Katya is doomed.

Dev can’t trust her because she’s a weapon, a ticking time bomb that will go off at any moment. He should kill her, but Katya touches him deeply. He wants to protect her, because even though she may seem fragile, she is a survivor just as the children he has helped. Dev has to figure out a way to save Katya and eliminate Lebon before he can harm Katya. As Katya continues to get her memories and identity back, she grapples with her feelings for Dev, as well as his growing feelings for her.

Nalini has written another wonderful hero in Dev. He is protective, alpha and very inventive when it comes to loving Katya. There is this great scene in Dev’s bedroom where he shows Katya how skilled he his with his hands. Katya took a bit more warming up to because she was so abused and pretty much a victim throughout the whole story. The big issue I had with these two is that Dev feels he cannot trust Katya, and rightly so. One minute he has to decide if killing her is the best for everyone involved or will throw caution to the wind and love her. This back and forth was a bit unnerving, especially because the tension and attraction these two have for one another just happens so fast. I was a bit unconvinced with Dev and Katya falling for each in such a short time period. Dev is always on his toes around Katya because she could kill him without any warning.

Even though I found Dev and Katya’s relationship not as appealing as the past ones in this series, their love scene were still satisfying even though there is always this doubt on their minds that everything could end for them in a blink of an eye. Theirs is a very needy love each that seemed a bit hollow. In part this is because Dev is such a strong character while Katya wasn’t so much.

Many past characters make appearances as well as a nice change where the reader dwells into the past about how the Psy Silence came to be. There are also more rumblings of a revolt and breakdown in the Psy community where Nalini keeps inserting key pieces of information to be aware of. I have a small inkling who the Ghost is; this mysterious individual who is causing major concerns for the Psy Council. I really think it is one of the Council members. Perhaps it is Kaleb, that deadly Psy working behind the scenes for his own gain? I have become such a big fan of his that I really can’t get off my mind.

Blaze of Memory has some interesting moments and again I can always count on Nalini to write a pleasurable story. I was hoping for a bit more shocks and awe, but I guess not every book in a series such as this can always have you on the edge of your seat. (less)

I couldn't resist, I had to continue with my Psy-Changling journey. I love Dev from when I had met him before and I continued to love him in this story. This one was a bit more emotional to me then some of the others. Because we really got to feel his and Kataya's romance and saw them fall in love. What happened in the end was that much more emotional. I just get so wrapped up in Nalini's world, I just want to keep reading until I have read them all. There is so much I could say about this addition to Singh's psy-changeling series. I went from being underwhelmed halfway through this book to being completely overwhelmed at the end. Blaze of Memory wrecked me. Throughout the first half of the book I found myself skimming through parts, waiting for something to actually happen. It seemed like there was chapter after chapter of build-up with nothing really *happening*. As usual in the psy-changeling books, I had to gloss over some of the main pa...more There is so much I could say about this addition to Singh's psy-changeling series. I went from being underwhelmed halfway through this book to being completely overwhelmed at the end. Blaze of Memory wrecked me. Throughout the first half of the book I found myself skimming through parts, waiting for something to actually happen. It seemed like there was chapter after chapter of build-up with nothing really *happening*. As usual in the psy-changeling books, I had to gloss over some of the main paragraphs dedicated to the psy. There are only so many ways you can describe the corruption and evil cunning of the councilors without giving away their total agenda, and the secrecy and all of the psy terminology sometimes make my eyes glaze over!

All that being said, I loved how you could sense the need Dev & Katya filled in each other, right from the beginning. He was a man on the edge - trying to balance his humanity with the icy steel core that helped him endure rough times and tough decisions. Katya was the softness and light that balanced out his coldness. She was also a broken woman - a former scientist who didn't even know her own mind after her capture and torture. Dev was a caring, protective, possessive lover - something she wanted desperately despite her psy make-up. The last quarter of the book was stunning in its heartbreaking intensity and filled with emotion. It was amazing to see Katya come into her own by refusing to cower to her tormentor, and what Dev admired and loved about her was obvious when she eventually accepted her fate, knowing there was no hope, and forcing him to do the same. Watching such a strong, sometimes stone-cold leader and former soldier be brought to his knees by his overwhelming love and devotion for his mate was incredibly touching. When he said, "I will never be at peace with this," my heart broke along with his.

I stayed up until 2am to finish this book and spent the last hour with tears streaming down my face. It had been months since I read the previous book in this series so I wasn't totally familiar with where the storyline was going and I didn't have much of a feel for Dev's character, but none of that mattered. This was a good story, although not that much connected to the rest of the series.

Katya was abducted and tortured by the most vicious member of the Council, than left on the doorstep of Dev Santos, the director of Shine. What they both don't know is that she is psycologically programmed to kill Dev, and then commit suicide.

First of all, I think this is one of the first books where the main characters are not part of the core Psy-Changeling groups we are used to. Dev and Katya both appeared in previous books but there wasn't much buildup to this one and I was surprised that they were getting their own story. After reading Branded By Fire I was sure it was going to be Hawke's story but I guess Singh wanted to save it for later.

In this book we have the first couple without Changelings. The heroes are Devraj Santos, leader of the Forgotten, introduced in Mine to Possess and Katya (Ekaterina), Ashaya’s ex assistant.

The Forgotten are the descendants of the Psys who defected from the PsyNet when Silence Protocol was implemented. Over the last century they continued to mingle with Humans and Changelings and their powers evolved and mutated differently from the Psys in the PsyNet. As the director of the Shine Foundation, Dev is intense, cold and ruthless in his determination to keep his people safe.

Katya was Ashaya’s assistant. She broke my heart. Supposedly dead, she was being held prisoner and sadistically tortured (body and mind) by Councilor Ming LeBon for five months, then left drugged, unconscious and broken on Dev’s doorstep.

In this book, the story takes place mainly in New-York and is centered on the Forgotten and what happens in the PsyNet but the DarkRiver members make some appearances as well as Judd (I love Judd!). The story is somehow linked to what happened in Mine to Possess and Hostage to Pleasure but there is no progression in the general plot per se, instead we have an insight on the Psy/Forgotten war on-going since the implementation of Silence Protocol. I loved Zarina's (Dev’s great-great-grandmother) letters to her son Matthew. I think it was a great way to put the implementation of Silence Protocol into perspective.

“So now you know—you come from the stubbornest stock this side of the equator. No one is going to stop your star from shining.“

For me this story is one of the darkest and most emotional of the series. Dev and Katya were hot together. I loved that despite all that happened to her, Katya is no pushover and doesn’t hesitate to show her backbone. I also loved to see Dev defenses against Katya unravel little by little.

I was so prepared to like this book, I have loved all the other books in the series and they have all gotten 5 stars, so when I was told that this wasn't as good as the others and I might not like it, I shrugged it off and dived in anyways. This book is about Devraj Santos, the Director of Shine, the charity/coporation that hides all the Fogotten, the Psy that defected when Silence was first introduced, and Ekaterina, renamed as Katya, Ashaya's assistant who we assumed was dead when Ming LeBon blew up Ashaya's lab. I think the first problem with this book is that those two characters seemed relatively minor through this series, Katya was only ever mentioned in passing and Dev was only in it for a short time a few books back, so we haven't really gotten to know either character very well prior to this book. But that's fine, we have a whole book to get to know them right? But as I got to know them and as the book progressed I started to get bored and annoyed, it felt like a novella being stretched beyond its capacity to make it into a full length book, everything was dragged out and not much was actually happening.

But the main problem I had was I didn't like Dev or Katya that much. Dev reminded me of an 80's historical romance hero; he blew hot and cold, one moment he would be all tender with Katya, and then the next he would be cold and aggressive. Katya was a Stolkholm Syndrome heroine, I can't see how she could fall in love with him when through most the book he was a bit of a bastard and would't have hesitated to kill her.

But the book wasn't all bad, the reason it got 3 stars instead of 2 is because I liked the other stories going on. You learn some interesting things about the Arrows and the Forgotton. Also at the beginning of most the chapters there is a letter written by a Psy a few years before Silence was implemented showing you how the Psy at the time reacted and why it was implemented and a true sense of how twisted it has become.

Ofcourse I am going to carry on reading this series, I am just hoping the next book is better!(less)

I was in a serious reading slump before this but Blaze of Memory cured me! I freaking love Dev! As the Shine director, he’s kind of like the alpha of his own people. I found myself loving him despite his initial icy persona. His gift with metal is such a cool talent to have, though it would have been nice to see him use it more often.

Five pages into this book and I found myself feeling so bad for Katya. I think her new name suits her so much better, don’t you think? It’s less Psy and more personable. Even though she may be mentally and physically weak, I found a quiet strength in her. She’s definitely my favourite of the Psy women! I adore her! But there was that one part near the end, when she injects Dev and goes to face Ming alone that scared the living shit out of me! I wanted to beat her for being so stupid! But that doesn’t undermine her love for Dev and her courage.

One thing I loved about Dev is the fact that he doesn’t get angry at Katya. He does, but he’s so sweet about it. My favourite part is when Katya pulls a runaway stunt and Dev walks into his cousin’s house and finds her all nonchalant and snaking on a huge muffin. The fact that he doesn’t unleash his rage on her for making him worry so much shows how much he cares for her. I just adore Dev! It doesn’t hurt that he’s sexy as hell too!

I loved those beautifully written letters to Matthew. At first I was thinking, “What the hell are these for?” But they rounded out the chapters well and brought forth the full range of emotions that the initial victims of the Silence implementation experienced.The very last one at the end that closed the book off was especially beautiful.

What can I say? Singh knows how to make me cry like a little ninny! I adored this entire book and I thought Noor and Keenan were so adorable! I love the fact that Singh sees everyone equally, no matter their race or age. Noor and Keenan have a wonderful gift and I’m so happy that they really got to showcase it in this book. Otherwise, I don’t think I would’ve stopped crying if things ended badly.

Blaze of Memory is officially one of my favourites in this series. Hell, I can’t even choose just one!!(less)

After the slightly iffy sixth installation in this series, we have yet another winner with Dev and Katya's story. I admit at my slight reluctance at reading this one - Dev wasn't on my list of heroes who immediately needed their story told in this series, but I'm more than happy with how things turned out. For him and for Katya.

And boy, did the guy have that in spades.
Dev has intrigued me since he first appeared in this series, this steely, determined man whose past is shrouded in mystery and I immediately wanted to know more about him, what made him tick, how he would react when push came to shove, and how could his resolve and determination fare in the face of romance.

I got my wish. I saw it all, understood it all, and suffered through it all with both of them. This is what I call a romance, when you can't help what you feel, despite what your brain and gut is trying to tell you. And this is Dev in a nutshell. He knows there's something off with Katya, he knows he shouldn't trust her, he knows he should keep her at arms length, yet he just can't help himself. She burrows deep under his skin, and he just can't get her out...And after a while, he doesn't want to.
I loved seeing that domineering streak in him, so reminiscent of the Changelings, so at odds with his Psy heritage, and I loved Katya even more for not putting up with it. Much.
I liked the fact this story didn't delve much into all the intrigue that's going on in the Psy-Changeling-Human world, but focused primarily on the romance between the two leading characters. It offered a nice respite from having to follow too many story-lines at once, and try to keep all the facts straight.

And the ending completely broke me, I had me a nice little cry-athon this morning as I got to the truly heart-breaking part of this story, and I kept hoping something would happen to make it all right again, but knowing it was impossible. Yet, the fictional world proved me wrong once again, and all was well in Romancelandia and the ShadowNet.

To sum up my thoughts about this book in three words...I.Loved.It.(less)

This is the one book of the series I find hardest to give a rating and review. On one hand, this is not the smoothest text (especially in the beginning of story). There are points where it stuttered to the point that I had to reread sections, more than once, to make sure I understood. It has taken me a week to read through the first nine books in the psy-changeling series and while I am enthralled by Nalini Singh's intriguing world I am continually frustrated by her utter lack of ability at characterisation. Every single story is the same romantic entanglement between an abused, fragile-looking woman with 'a spine of pure steel' and an 'over- protective, dominant', but somehow flawed male. It's gotten to the point where I can't tell the characters apart. Lucas, Judd, Vaughan and Dorian are practically the same, never mind the characters of Tallin, Ashaya and Katya and the stories of Sasha and Faith are so similar it's almost as if she shouldn't have bothered with the second book. It is a struggle to identify the back stories of the distinct characters when they all interact. Despite this immense irritation of mine, the world she has created is undeniably fascinating and, although the sex scenes and the development of the relationship between the main male and female characters is utterly predictable (she is abused/damaged in some way and craving touch and he is also damaged in some way and overly protective and utterly dominant) the need to know what is happening certainly overrules the desire to stop reading out of utter frustration with the predictability of it all. I suggest Ms Singh takes a leaf out of the books of Kim Harrison and Kelley Armstrong, who are experts at building fascinating worlds with an intriguing set of different characters without letting plot suffer along the way, because - while she is excellent at building tension through her plots - her characters are so two dimensional it makes you wonder whether you are going to have to wade through the same tired sex scenes and relationship development to find out what the Council / Changeling packs / Shine Foundation is doing next. Despite all of this I have to admit to genuinely enjoying the series, I think the world she's built is immensely interesting and her books are getting better and more intriguing each time. But please, Nalini, do something about the characters, because this series could be so much more than the same repeated love story it is each and every time.

The ending was a little deus-ex-machina but knowing Singh there will be consequences for this later. Nothing is ever straightforward and ignorable.

Talk about an emotional roller-coaster. This book actually made me cry. Now I won't give away the plot since I hate it when reviewers do that, but I think it's suffice to say that this instalment concentrates on some of the more complicated issues of loss and love, as well as trust and honour.

It's a great story which centres on Shine Director Dev Santos. He's not Psy or Changeling but something all together different. He's a descended from the "Forgotten," those Psy who defected from the Psynet before Silence was sanctioned. Along with other members of the Forgotten, he has some Psy abilities, but he is lead by his emotions - the strongest of which is his devotion to and protection of his family and his people. Naturally, being a lead in Singh's world his drop dead gorgeous too.

Katya is Psy, but a Psy with a difference. She's been imprisoned by Ming Le Bon (who definitely needs to die now) since Ashaya's defection, had her mind torn apart, lost her memory and had a psychic prison installed in her brain. She can't remember anything about who she is, least of all why she was dropped on Dev's doorstep. Nor can she properly access the biofeedback she needs from the Psynet. Ming's hold on her mind is slowly and irrevocably damaging her brain. Its a recipe for disaster but Dev can't resist a damsel in distress and refuses to accept that she might be a plant by the council or that the "prison" inside her mind is slowly killing her. Her motor skills are first to be affected and it's just the start on a very slippery slope. She knows she has a task to do and as her memories start to come back to her and she realises that either her or Dev will die.

What comes next is a fantastic story of love against all odds and a battle of epic emotional proportions. We learn more about the Psy-Changeling world with a better insight into the Forgotten to make our world more complete and when some of the forgotten start displaying amazing yet deadly capabilities, we come to understand why, for some, Silence was the only option.

You will not be disappointed.

Regular readers of Nalini Singh’s marvelous Psy-Changeling series might remember Dev Santos. He was an ancillary character in Singh’s fifth book, Hostage to Pleasure. So, when Nalini announced that Blaze of Memory would be about Dev finding his love, I was stymied. Why on earth would she write about Dev when there are so many Psy (Kaleb, anyone?) or Changeling (Hawke, Hawke, Hawke, Hawke) stories that I so desperate for. What I should have done, is had more confidence in Nalini as an author. Once again, she delivers an emotionally charged, gripping and well imagined love story that enhances the mythology of the world she has created and propels ongoing story lines ahead.

Dev Santos comes home one day to find an unconscious, beaten woman on his doorstep. He knows she’s Psy and is immediately suspicious of the why of it, but also can’t seem to help himself from helping her. When she awakens, his worst fears are confirmed. She is dangerous to him, and the all important mission of the organization that he runs. He knows she’s dangerous, because she flat out tells him. Her memories may have been stripped, but she is certain of her mission: to kill Dev Santos. However, as he spends time with her, he finds a woman of strength and character and finds himself very attracted. Katya Haas knows that her Psy blocks are failing, she knows that she’s been programmed to do something terrible, and she is bound and determined not to carry out her orders. But that fight is stripping her of her mental blocks, weakening her, and making her even more of a threat to the man she’s been ordered to eliminate. As Dev races to find answers about how to fix Katya’s issues, he finds himself overwhelmingly attracted to this strong, determined woman who is nothing like he first thought. Will he be able to help her?

As always, I gobbled up Blaze of Memory, even though I began it with a lot of trepidation. I wasn’t sure why Nalini had chosen to write this book. Plus, Dev is human and Katya Psy. Where were my beloved Changelings? And how could I care at all about a character that I barely knew anything about? I should have had more confidence in one of my very favorite authors. Although human, and certainly not a physically strong as the Changeling heroes I adore, Dev is every bit as powerful and ruthless when his woman is endangered. As far as Katya goes, she is an interesting character who is fighting tooth and nail against the mission she’s been assigned. As a general rule, I don’t connect as strongly with Singh’s Psy heroines as I do with the Changelings, and this is true of Katya as well. My only other niggle is a scene right at the end of the book where Singh employed a literary device that I felt was unnecessary. But within the scope of the mythology it works, although I very much hope she doesn’t go to that particular well again. Readers should be advised that Blaze of Memory is not a good starting point for the series. They should begin with the first Psy/Changeling book, Slave to Sensation, mostly because the mythology builds slowly and in a complex manner throughout the seven books. But for those who know and love the series, Blaze of Memory is another incredibly strong entry in the Psy/Changeling series, my very favorite in paranormal romance.

Singh kind of takes us out of their world and submerges us more into the Psy world and the world of The Forgotten. The Forgotten are those Psy individuals that decided not to submit to Silence in 1970 when the Council implemented it. They went Rogue and with their emotions intact began intermarrying with Changelings and Humans. Their abilities over the years have changed, weakened and mutated.

As we saw in Hostage to Pleasure with Ashaya Aleine, the Psy are trying to figure out if The Forgotten are any kind of threat to them. At the end of Mine to Possess Ashaya helps Jon and Noor, two children the Psy were experimenting on, escape the Psy labs. Ashaya then proceeds, in her book, to get her son Keenan and herself out of the Psy's control. As a result Keenan and Noor find each other as children and quickly decided they "belong" to each other. As children they see this as a huge friendship but the Changelings around them know when they are adults, they will be mates.

In this book, we discover just how different The Forgotten abilities can be. Dev, we discover, can control metal on some level. And Keenan and Noor's abilities are a huge surprise. Because of the Psy's lack of emotion and continued "weeding out of mutations" their own Silenced people are not seeing such changed abilities leaving them stuck while The Forgotten grow.

Because of the nature of the characters (Dev being the Shine director and Katya a Psy), we see more about the Psy's past than we do about the Changelings, which I for one find more interesting. Still Dev's character holds his own with a nature that is very much Changeling while never actually being so. We also see that The Forgotten see themselves as a group between Psy coldness and Changeling packs. So Dev's possessiveness in the story is no surprise.

Katya's brokenness when she first arrives is truly sad. Ming Le Beon is a Councilor for the Psy and has taken it upon himself to strip the mind of one of his scientists. Katya awakes at Shine to realize she's been tortured by Ming effectively destroying her Silence and making her an emotional member of society, only now she believes she's a Trojan Horse to lure in the director of Shine.

The thing that throws me is the intermittent letters and Sunshine reports we get throughout the book. The Sunshine reports become relevant later but still do not hold much interest for me. The reasoning is another example of how Silence is failing but it is less interesting that the story of Dev and Katya. As for the letter's, we do not discover their relevance until nearly the end of the story but they quickly shine a light on their purpose.

It is Dev and Katya's budding romance that really sets fire to the pages of this book. Without these strong characters, I think the book would have lacked something fundamental and left me wonder if I should read more. I do wonder how the next book will hold up when telling the story of the Enforcement Officer we met in Mine to Prossess Max Shannon. Still, the series overall, has been a good one and if you like a fantasy/paranormal type of romance then this is right up your alley.(less)
