Vampire/Paranormal Fiction Fans...
The fifth installment of Laurell K. Hamilton's ongoing Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series, which takes as its premise the idea that vampires, werewolves, and other preternatural creatures are an accepted reality, and have been granted equal rights in the United States, Bloody Bones follows its heroine as she heads to Branson, Missouri to begin the difficult job of raising an entire cemetery from the dead. Hired to help settle a land dispute, Anita instead finds herself caught up (as always) in a...more

Okay so I get that Anita Blake is a Bad@ss and she can take care of herself Yay Independent Woman!! But does she have to be a goody goody too! Its annoying go ahead and have sex with Jean Claude or Richard woman!! Hello they are both hot and care about you! I am ready for the sex part. This book drags ugg.. the only thing keeping me going is the next action scene and Anita finally giving in to Jean Claude hopefully..

This book was my least favourite of this series so far.
It isn't that the writing itself was bad; in fact I can see a great improvement both in style and technique here from the beginning of the series. I just didn't enjoy the subject matter, the characters, the conflicts... it all seemed to rub me the wrong way.
In particular there seemed to be a turn for the worse in the character of Richard that bothers me. I don't like it when a character seems to be growing in one di...more

For all the Anita Blake books - I started this series with my then friend, Meredith - she actually got me hooked that fateful summer of 2000 when I was living on her wooden floor in Brooklyn. We were both unemployed and bored and got hooked into this series. I loved Anita Blake because it was before I discovered the new genre - what I like to call "badass chicks who kick ass!" written in first person - and so she was all empowering and of course there were hot vampires and werewolves i

Although I never really learned to like Anita Blake, she was always tolerable ~ until Bloody Bones. Didn't Anita complain about all of the Were's alpha fight/dominance nonsense in Lunatic Cafe? Really, she is no better than the Were's here. If you take out all of the "I'm a bigger badass than you are" scenes & descriptions of corny outfits, you are left with nothing more than a short story. Granted.... I do like Hamilton's story telling. But at this point I feel as if I am wading throu...more

I keep giving the series only 2 stars, yet keep reading. Why? Because I like the plot. However, Hamilton's writing style just makes me skim through large chunks of the story until I get to the interesting bits, so it's a love-hate relationship.
I like the love triangle between Richard, Anita, and Jean Claude. The introduction of the fey was interesting as well.
Also, finally Anita is behaving like a religious person (or at least more so than before), although as yet she still hasn't been...more

This book is a little better in my opinion again than volume 4. Larry Kirkland, animator and vampire’s hangman in education, plays a stronger role in this tape. This is very positive from my view, because Larry is a small brother a sort of Anitas and the dialogues between the both break up whole a little. He also creates a little the balance to Anita becoming nevertheless slowly colder and colder.
Also Jean-Claude receives more place in this book again and one gets to know more abou...more

Meh, I could have liked it better but I was really bored with Hamilton's interpretation of Rawhead. It didn't have much to do with the legend, nor did it resemble Clive Barker's completely disgusting version, which left it floating somewhere in the unsatisfactory in-between. I was somewhat obsessed with boogyman stories when i was younger, and I think a reader with less familiarity would enjoy this story better than I was able to. That said, this book is about on par with the previous 4 books of...more

I love how the experiences in your life change who you are. Anita tries so hard to be morally righteous, but since the Voodoo priestess she has made a few exceptions. What do you do when someone is threatening someones life? Stand there, watching to save your own. Or risk your own life in what seems to be a no win situation. Is it stupid to save yourself? Or, to idly standby when someone's in need? Jewish law says to save others unless your own life will be forfeited. All life is precious, but y...more

On to the fifth book of the series, and thankfully this one seemed much improved compared to what had come before.
Instead of all the relationships wrangles we've faced in the previous two (and the dire-logue that went with it), the focus is pulled back to the cases that Anita is working on and, possibly because she seems to be getting a little more sleep, she's not quite as annoying and bitchy as before (not that she isn't still, but at least she's biting with reason this time).

JAN 24, 2010: RE-READING AGAIN....X4
Though I do love this series (as evidenced by my inability to stop reading and re-reading it), there is something about this novel that just not appeal to me much. I keep putting this novel down in favor of other novels.
Anita Blake, the Executioner, was called on an out-of-town assignment... to raise a zombie to dispel the claims of the Bouvier family. A simple zombie raising was never the case for her as she became involve with a ma...more

While not perfect, I think this has been the best of the series so far. I've always loved the plot action in these books but found the over-the-top caricaturization of the main character incredibly annoying. In this installment Anita actually makes mistakes, she experiences doubts, desire, and even some defeat which goes a long way towards making her a character rather than just a caricature. Giving her a side-kick, and thereby a mirror in which to see herself differently, really helped add d...more

I feel like these books are really ramping up now. The story is progressing and I keep holding my breath waiting for Anita to make a decision to shape the way the rest of the books will progress... but we're still not there yet. There was a distinct lack of Edward in this book, which I didn't notice so much because there was *way* more Jean-Claude and way less Richard (which is kind of how I like things). From all I've heard about the direction the next few books take, I can't say that I am p...more

If you like the Twilight books, you'll probably like these; an adult version of the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle. The heroine in all of the books (a series, obviously) is Anita Blake, a no nonsense vampire hunter. These books are really easy to read; adult mind candy! I read most of them while sitting by the pool in Puerto Vallarta. I am waiting for a TV series!
Note: I read this 1st four in this series bang bang bang bang and read this one a few months later. I will have to...more

After feeling lukewarm about the previous two in the series, I really enjoyed reading this one -- not much Richard, lots of Jean Claude, and Anita being a bad ass outside of St. Louis. Also, the vibe of this book is completely different. Rather abruptly (in fact, almost as if the author decided after having already written part of the book), Anita begins changing her opinions about vampires, what creatures are/aren't monsters, and what her own morals are. I honestly don't know where the serie...more

When Anita Blake's boss at Animators, Inc., informs her that she's expected to raise 300-year-old zombies from a field of jumbled bones just to settle a land dispute, she's understandably annoyed. But as soon as she arrives in Branson, Missouri, to do the deed, the job gets more interesting. A psychotic sword-wielding vampire starts committing multiple murders in the area, and Anita must call on Jean-Claude, her powerful fanged suitor, for help. As always, Anita prevails over the undead, keeping...more

I love Vampire stories, but this series is sooo much more than just Vampire stories! Anita Blake is an animator, one who raises people from the dead. She is involved with a werewolf named Richard and a vampire named Jean Claude, the current Master of the City. In this fifth installment, Anita and her trainee, Larry. are planning on reviving an entire cemetery over a property rights settlement. I have a very hard time putting the books down. The action is non-stop and exciting. I would high...more

This was the last book I read in the Anita Blake series. Second to last L.K. Hamilton book I bothered reading, for that matter.
I have heard Hamilton accused of "Mary Sue" writing before, and perhaps this book is where it is really beginning to tell, because it just didn't do it for me. It's here that Anita Blake begins slowly slipping into the depravity and stupidity of the later books, I suppose.

I really got into the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. If you are interested, Start with Guilty Pleasures and work your way through I think 13 books now. Anita Blake is an aggressive lead who raises dead people and executes vampires. She is caught between a love triangle between a master vampire and leader of a werewolf pack. It's VERY ADULT compared to Stephanie Meyer. The series is at it's peak with Bloody Bones and Blue Moon but past book 9 it just becomes too much about sex and blood and n...more
