A Magic Gecko, A fantastic book,
By Wolfgang Huste - See all my reviews

This review is from: A Magic Gecko(Paperback)
Horst H. Geerken's "A Magic Gecko", published in 2011 is an extremely successful description of modern Indonesia which includes a review of the country's history. The author - from Bonn/Germany, and personally known to this reviewer for some time - is a broadly cultured and committed personality of the kind that one unfortunately meets increasingly rarely. His book reflects this in...more

After three hundred and fifty years of brutal colonial rule the Dutch had just left the Land of the Thousand Islands when Horst Geerken was posted there by AEG-Telefunken to build up the electronic communications infrastructure. I have bought the Englisch version during a resent trip to Indonesia. A wonderful book about culture, people, politics and history! Very interesting is the chapter about the brutal colonial rule and the fight for freedom from Dutch surpression. Up to now not much has been known about the Dutch brutality, because the Dutch are suppressing up to now all information about their wrong doings in Indonesia. I recommend this book to everyboda who is interested in this country.
