Is it safe to say I'm getting burned out on everything Clifford? Are people going to attack me for that?
Julia doesn't even watch Clifford but maybe one episode a month *if* she happens to catch it. We've only read a few books about the guy. How can I be burned out? He's cute enough. I guess.
I think it's because he's big and red. That bothers me deep down I'm thinking. It's so..... not natural to say the least. Why couldn't he have been big and brown? Or black and white spots? Why bright red? I...more

When Emily Elizabeth enters Clifford into a dog competition, the results are humorous and somewhat predictable. Clifford is paired up with another dog, who runs the obstacle course and other trials perfectly - while Clifford, because he is so big, keeps getting stuck or breaking parts of the elements. However when it comes to the big splash competition, Clifford scores well, and almost wins when he saves his competitor who is unable to swim. My daughter LOVES Clifford. This book is lovely because it teaches the children that even if they don't do all of the things that others can do, they can still make a difference. And it's not whether you win or lose, it's being yourself and participating to the fullest of your abilities. Even though he doesn't win the contest, Clifford still helps. He's a good dog, and he's still loved. That's an important lesson in my book.

-i like how this book describes Clifford a champion, even though he did not physically win the contest
-can be used to encourage children to always try their best, even if they might not win in physical terms
-children can write a story or draw a picture about a time when they were in a contest or did something brave that was a good deed

I used this book as a lead in to talk about the Olympics during a story time. It's a cute story that shows how a real champion doesn't necessarily have to win first place all the time.

I was absolutely astonished that the really young crowd at the Early Years centre was willing to sit through this. I'm not a big fan of Clifford, but obviously he has his place!
