There are huge chunks of new scenes in this fourth instalment that were not in the movie. So it's like reading a different storyline. I'm really warming to Mallory and Simon, too.

As usual, the drawings by Tony DiTerlizzi are as breath-taking as ever.

Things are getting creepy and tense, but still loads of fun. Excited for the Wrath of Mulgarath...I mean, not really...excited for the book...not so much the actual wrath. That can remain within the pages, please.

The further I get into this series, the more I like it. These are great books, wonderfully written and illustrated. Black and DiTerlizzi have done an amazing job. These books in some ways are like C.S. Lewis's Narnia books, and in other ways like J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but they are not overtly religious the way Lewis's are and they are not as dark as Tolkien's. They will introduce children to the concept of wonder, and believing in things unseen, or at least unseen by most. As the s ...more

I don't plan to go into great detail about the storyline, because I'm a firm believer that a story can only be truly reviewed by a person's impression of the story. I think it would be a waste of time to go over the plot again...that's what the title page of the book is for.

Damn, I was not prepared how cold and industrial dwarves are! Is it sad that I think this is my favorite out of all of them! Finally, some darkness has been added to the plot and we finally get to see the villain of the story

I can honestly say that this series is one that was really let down by the film adaptation. Back when the film was released I found myself excited for what was to come, only to be extremely disappointed with what we were given. If you’re someone who enjoyed the film then I really do suggest that you read the books to find out just how great they actually are rather than taking the film standpoint on it.

The fourth instalment of the series follows in the footsteps of the three previous books as it

I really liked the dwarf kingdom/quarry. I really enjoyed the growth of Mallory's character. She's growing up, and it's nice to see the progression. I didn't totally love the added drama with Jared and his mom (the whole "he won't stop misbehaving" thing). And I didn't love that this one ended so openly. I get that the series is sort of wrapping up (thi

"Your kind wither in the blink of an eye." He leaned close to the bars of the cage and winked.

After randomly remembering how much I loved this book series as a kid, I picked up The Spiderwick Chronicles to see if it held up over the years, and I was pleasantly surprised. Cashing in on the children's-fantasy kick of the early 2000's, this heavily illustrated book is in the same fantastical vein of the Harry Potter series with the childish, macabre aesthetic of A Series of Unfortunate Events. Jared and Simon are used to having someone around who looks just like them. They're identical twins, after all. But they're not triplets, and there appear to be three of them now, so clearly faerie involvement is to blame. As they're puzzling that out, their sister Mallory disappears from her fencing match and they must figure out what snuck in and took her--and how to get her back again. What do these dwarves want? And what's their sister got to do with it? This Field Guide thing may be good fo ...more

Ejem...

Ooh things are definetly getting more serious. Now we've seen the dwarves and some other weird creatures and we finally got informaly introduced to Mulgarath- he's so freakin' ugly and creepy-looking! Again the art was fantastic! (Mallory freakin' looked like a faerie- why the hell does she hate dresses?)

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!

Do I recommend?:
Each installment is like a short story/part or section of the whole thing. I feel like you can just have all 5 books bound into one. But they are super qu

Bu kitapta cüceler Malory'i kaçırırlar ve Jared'la Simon'a kitapla değiş tokuş istediklerine dair not bıralırlar. :))

This one feels a lot like a rehash of past books in the series: Jared gets in trouble because of one of the fae, one of the siblings is kidnapped by the fae, the other two must save the third, etc. The ending saves this one, as we finally have a clear "bad guy" that the children need to go against. Hoping the last book in the series provides a bit more excitement.

What i thought of this book was about this girl and she has a brother and his name is Jared and his sister named Mallory had passed out and so him and his little brother had picked up their big sister and started carrying her and then the goblins was chasing them and then their sister had woke up and started saying do you guys need help.

My daughter is just in love with this series so far. This book ended on such a cliffhanger and she was so mad and demanded to know what happened next. Unfortunately our library does not carry book 5 so I made it even worse for her when I told her we would have to start another book while waiting for the order from another library to come in.

Still loving the story. I love that the books are relatively short and full of beautiful illustrations. It's kind of cool to do one stories in a series of books. I imagine it's great for kids because it holds their attention. It's more fun to move on to the next "book" than the next chapter :)
