Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs (Dragonbreath #2)
Danny Dragonbreath knew girls were trouble. But the new foreign exchange student, Suki the Salamander, is beyond trouble. Not only has she reduced his best friend, Wendell, to a blithering, lovesick tadpole, but she?s apparently the object of an elaborate ninja frog kidnapping plot. Danny is never one to pass up an adventure (especially one involving ninja frogs), and so h...more

Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs is the second book in the Dragonbreath series by Ursula Vernon. Vernon uses her traditional green, black and white comic like illustrations from the first book, but this time also includes red to enhance the color spectrum.
In this book Danny Dragonbreath is obsessed samurais, swords and kung fu scenes. Like the first book it starts with Danny daydreaming, this time about being “Lord Dragonbreath Ruler of an Ancient Smurai Clan” and how him and his troops w...more

Danny is appalled when his best friend Wendell loans the Japanese exchange student his comic book-- she's a GIRL and they could both get cooties! And what if Wendell sits on the bus or eats lunch with Suki instead of him? Once Danny finds out that Suki is being followed and attack by Ninja frogs, however, his tune changes and the trio head to Mythical Japan on the bus to consult Danny's great grandfather about how to stop the Spurtongue clan from kidnapping Suki and making her their queen. To do...more
The Dragonbreath series is written for grade schoolers, but I’ve followed the author’s ‘Digger’ strip on the web and seen some of her other art, so when I saw the library had this book, I picked it up. It’s a well written and adorably illustrated (Vernon does both the writing and illustrating) adventure story.

Reason for Reading: Read aloud to my 9yo ds over the March Break.
Summary: Danny has his mind full of imaginary samurai scenarios and watches ninja movies every night because of his current Japanese warfare obsession. Plus ninjas are cool! Then a Japanese exchange student comes to school for a while, Suki Salamander, and Wendell falls a bit in love with her which makes Danny nauseated. Until he finds out that frog ninjas are trying to kidnap Suki. So the three take off to visit Danny's great-gran...more

In this second adventure in the Danny Dragonbreath universe, Danny and his bff Wendell the iguana pair up with Suki, a salamander foreign exchange student from Japan, to figure out why Suki is being stalked by ninja frogs. After a quick ride on the magic bus, they arrive in mythological Japan to meet with Danny's great Grandpa and a band of geckos dedicated to the defeat of the ninja frogs. There were some nice messages about friendship and passing kindness forward. I enjoyed the running gag abo...more
Danny Dragonbreath is one super funny dragonboy. From page 1 I have been hooked till I reach the end of the book. It's so hillarious and engaging.
There is a new girl in school and she is soo unlike other girls eventhough like other girls she wants to be a vet when she grow up. Suki is a smart exchange student from Japan. She loves reading comics and what's more, she is the reincarnation of a ninja queen! One day after school Danny and Wendell help her from two ninja frogs who want to claim her a...more

This is a cute little chapter book. Dragonbreath continues his adventures in his strange little world which has human characteristics (schools, bus systems, etc.) but it entirely populated by animals. And apparently Dragonbreath being a dragon is quite unusual. He is "mythological" in the book and it is strongly implied that he shouldn't exist. Yet nobody makes any real big deal about this. But I am way overanalyzing a fun little book that plays by its own rules. Its mostly an excuse for Dragonb...more
I love anything and everything Ursula Vernon writes, and the Dragonbreath series is no exception, but even for my baseline level of love, this was awesome. Attack of the Ninja Frogs is smart, funny, genre-savvy, educational (you learn ninja and samurai facts!), and just all around fun, with a pitch-perfect young boy voice and some really hilarious jokes. The potato salad from the first book makes a brief reappearance, which filled me with joy.

I find myself giving J books much harsher ratings because as a reader I just don't enjoy them as much. However, I think children would enjoy them far more than I because that is the target audience.
That was the case with Dragonbreath, which I am booktalking in October. It was mildly entertaining to me, but a 2nd or 3rd grader would find it hysterical and full of adventure. Somewhere between illustrated story and graphic novel. Love that they can catch a 3:15 bus to Mythical Japan (wish I could !). Cute characters. Nice use of their actual animal characteristics as times.
Funny lines:
(captures the essence of the characters): If Suki - a girl - was able to tie a blindfold around the crane, refusing to hold its head would be pure cowardice. Wendell would never let him hear the end of it, and Wendell was terrified of perfectly safe things like gunpowder and bottle rock...more

"Dragonbreath: Attack of the ninja frogs" is about a small dragon named Danny. Danny is not the best dragon, he cant breath out fire and he is not the most athletic dragon. One day at the bus stop Danny sees he friend talking to a girl named Suki, he immediately dislikes her because she has "cooties" and is stealing his best friend. but that changes after she gets kidnapped. Danny helps get her back and they become friends.

I checked this out of the library because the author's name caught my eye. I used to frequent a certain nerdy art site and she was by far one of the best on there. It was really cool to see her with her own illustrated book. But it was a little disappointing. She does the most amazingly adorable and beautiful drawings, but with the limited colours and whatnot, it didn't really come through in this book. To be fair, it's probably expected when you're doing a whole book of illustrations rather tha...more

A fun addition to the Dragonbreath series. In this second book, Danny is going through an obsession with all things ninja and Kung fu. Much to his dismay, his best friend Wendell seems to be involved in a romantic relationship with an exchange student from Japan, Suki. The boys find out that Suki is descended from ninja ancestors and is being followed by ninja frogs as a result. It is their job to enlist the help of the Geckos of the Golden Chrysanthemum to save the day and rid Ski of her ninja...more
I love Ursula's writing - she's such a hoot! The Dragonbreath series are great, quick reads for young readers, and should particularly be enjoyed by boys. I love the random facts interspersed through the story and Urusla's sense of humour really appeals to me. She's an awesome artist too - and the quirky illustrations interspersed with the text really bring the story to life.

Part-graphic novel, part chapter book, this is an entertaining and somewhat educational story about an adolescent anthropomorphic dragon and his iguana pal. It's the second book in the Dragonbreath series by Ursula Vernon.
We borrowed this book from our local library as an ebook and our girls really liked reading the full-color book on a tablet. The story is a quick read and the graphic novel-like scenes are woven throughout the story in a seamless way. This would be a great book for a child who...more

Like the first Dragonbreath book this one is a mix of novel and graphic novel. The graphics are cute and expressive. You don’t have to read the first one but there are references to the first book in this one that are more fun if you know what they mean. I also like the continuity between this one and the first one. Not just the same characters but that both start with Danny’s fantasy, that there is a magic bus system that goes anywhere you need it to go (even mythical Japan), and that Danny has...more
This book got my attention because my nephews are five and ten years-old and love to read. Although this is just the book for them, I enjoyed it too! Danny is a typical boy with a vivid imagination, a love of kung fu movies and he happens to be a dragon. When his best friend Wendall falls for the new girl Suki, Danny is more than a little annoyed. But she's not like the other girls and when an attempt is made by ninja frogs to kidnap her Danny and Wendall jump into action.

Ursula Vernon's kids books are spectacular. They are so much fun - and educational! In this one, we learn about ninjas and samurais. And old ninja movies. And the proper terms for some of the weaponry and WHY they're named that way. All within the context of the story. I love it when an author can sneak knowledge into a book for kids, especially one whose main character is a dragon!

This second book in the Dragonbreath series only improves upon the franchise. This one is extremely funny and has lots of great action sequences. A GREAT series, especially for those in grades 1 - 5 and for reluctant readers as they numerous (and large) illustrations on most pages and are even graphic in some places.

Fun read of more adventures with Danny Dragonbreath and his best friend Wendell. This time there is some girl power in the mix as they are joined by Japanese foreign exchange salamander, Suki.
