Nogal sterk filmisch stijl (film noir), fragmentarisch, doorspekt met herinneringen, gedachten, fantasie en dergelijke. Op drie plaatsen wordt in de vorm van een homerische zang, of een stripverhaalconversatie de deelname aan het bombardement in herinnering gebracht. Die aparte stijl maken het boek bijna onleesbaar en soms ongenietbaar en onbegrijpelijk.

The first impression of this book and also about Harry Mulisch (since this is the first work I read from him) was a negative one. I expected another style of writing; the first fifty pages of this work caused some irritation due the strange, unnatural, 'sophisticated' style.
