This is former wild-child Keely McKay's story, the sassy, youngest (at 27) only girl in a family that includes five hunky, wild, protective older brothers and a bunch of male cousins. Keely's eager to make her mark outside the ranching McKay family, and she's done extremely well in her career as a physical therapist. She has a dream of opening her own clinic in her small Wyoming hometown, and has bought an historic, abandoned building that needs a lot of renovation before her dream can become a reality. But before her building can be rehabbed by her contractor cousins Chet and Remy, she needs the work to be supervised by a restoration expert-- her nemesis-- 6 foot 4 inches of tall, dark, buff, sexiness, architect Jack Donohue.

Jack is Keely's brother Carter's friend, and Keely has known him since she was 16 years old. Keely and Jack have never really gotten along, always sniping at each other, while denying that there was any attraction between them. At one time Keely dated his brother Justin, until he dumped her, following Jack's advice (another reason for Keely's dislike). Most recently, at brother Colt's wedding, Keely and Jack had an aborted, but very passionate encounter, which left Keely confused and with hurt feelings. Now, a couple of years after that incident, Jack is back in her life, and she needs him to oversee her project. Will Jack be willing to help her?

Jack, 34, is the total opposite of down-home country gal Keely. He's sophisticated, career obsessed, with no time for fun, friends, or even family. He's suits and wingtips to her jeans and cowboy boots, smooth jazz to her country music, and drives a Beemer to her trusty Ford truck. He's a loner, she's a people person...they argue, they fight, but boy oh boy, do they have the chemistry. Keely may need him for her project, but he has other more lucrative jobs to pursue, and he's out to one-up his former business partner who betrayed him with his ex girlfriend. One career making opportunity is closed to him because of his lack of marital status. But then he gets a crazy idea...if he oversees Keely's project, maybe she can act the part of his...fiancée? Will they be able to convince her skeptical friends and family that they are a couple suddenly in love? Will Jack's 'engagement' to down-home Keely be a help or hindrance in his career and the social events they must attend with his big-city acquaintances?

When Jack and Keely agree to the arrangement, you know it's just a matter of time before they'll give in to the lust they have for each other. And once they stop the bickering and hit the sheets...it's hot, hot HOT! But is it just sex and good times, or is something else developing? What happens if one (or both) of them fall for the other? Will feelings get hurt? Do these two have anything in common besides awesome sexual chemistry? Can the city boy and the country girl get along and communicate outside the bedroom?

I can't say enough good things about this hot little story. I loved the characters. Keely is hard working, brash, sassy, bold, and sexy, with a really big, generous heart. She does have a vulnerable side, which was nice to see. There was a scene where Jack's bitchy ex tore down her confidence, which almost broke my heart. I hated to see Keely think that she wasn't good enough for Jack.

Jack was a strong, sexy, but kind of uptight, driven guy--a loner who really needed a woman like Keely to open his eyes and teach him a thing or two about living. Keely brought out his fun side, loosened him up a lot, and I loved seeing how he was falling under her spell, even if it took him long enough to realize he was in love with her! He wasn't perfect, but he was real. He could be thoughtless and selfish at times (as could Keely), but that's the beauty of Lorelei James's writing--her characters are flawed, but you still love them because you really get to know them.

The heat factor in this book was HIGH. Jack and Keely were sexually adventurous (the shower, the truck, the men's room) and set the sheets on fire in every conceivable way. Their relationship may have started out as sex for the sake of sex, but it didn't take long for romantic feelings to develop (even if they were reluctant to tell each other). They were perfect for each other, and I couldn't put the book down until I knew they realized it too.

Fans of the series--this is a must read, and I'm sure you'll find it as un-put-downable as I did! Most of the extended McKay family makes an appearance (get out that family tree!), and I loved catching up on the brothers, cousins, and their wives, and just how rapidly they reproduce. You'll fall in love with Keely and Jack, and root hard for their HEA. This is one fast paced, sexy read. My rating is a no-brainer--5 big stars!(less)

I really do enjoy this series for the pure entertainment value of the close, quirky McKay-West family. The stories are often funny, always sexy, but seldom all that emotionally compelling. That, however, is not the case with this installment.

In earlier books, I wasn't such a fan of Keely's, and wasn't all that hyped up about reading her story. Thank heavens I suffer from MR BIOs; Must Read Books In Order syndrome, because I needed to read All Jacked Up so I could continue the series, and I'm so...more

Favorite book of the series! Five plus stars!

Keely McKay has hated this stuffy businessman since her brother befriended him eons ago......Jack (aka Jack-off) Donahue. She dated his brother years ago and Jack's the reason Justin dumped her. This is not the best offering in the series, but I wanted to read it because I wanted to know what happens to the characters. That is the good and the bad of a continuing series.

Keely and Jack need to communicate better, and to be a little more introspective. If they better understood their own motivations, the book would have lasted six pages.

For those who follow the series, all of our favorite wives are expecting again.

I really love this series!!
I loved this book, but i didnt love it as much as some of the others..
Keely and Jack were good for each other, I laughed alot threw this one..
It had some real good moments with all the family, i loved those parts!!
Can't wait to read the next one!!

I loved this! My very first Lorelei James. I've been dodging this series for a while because I was worried that it would be a disappointment. From other reviews it was a given that there would be amazing sex scenes and I was concerned it wouldn't deliver the love story that I need, but I have to say that I seriously underestimated Lorelei James.

I’ve been reading Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series for about a month now. I pretty much fell hard with book one, and haven’t gotten back up. All Jacked Up is the eighth book in the series, which will see its tenth book, Cowgirls Don’t Cry, in November 2010.

The series revolves around two ranching families in modern-day Wyoming, the McKay’s and the West’s. Keely McKay is the prodigal daughter of the McKay clan, who we watch grow from a fresh from college wild-child in the earlier books, to a gro...more I’ve been reading Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series for about a month now. I pretty much fell hard with book one, and haven’t gotten back up. All Jacked Up is the eighth book in the series, which will see its tenth book, Cowgirls Don’t Cry, in November 2010.

The series revolves around two ranching families in modern-day Wyoming, the McKay’s and the West’s. Keely McKay is the prodigal daughter of the McKay clan, who we watch grow from a fresh from college wild-child in the earlier books, to a grown woman pursuing a responsible career that will no doubt impact the greater good of her entire Wyoming community.

We get small tidbits of Jack Donahue throughout the Rough Riders series but his details are kept to a bare minimum—just enough that we know Keely more or less hates him, and her favorite nickname for him says it all: Jack-off.

Being that Jack is the best friend to one of Keely’s older brothers, their relationship has been building over the course of the Rough Riders series. Going in to All Jacked Up, I expected a certain amount of volatile interaction between Jack and Keely, since their side stories in the previous books allude to this. What I got was a classic case of opposites attract.

Let me rephrase that: Keely and Jack are opposites attract meets five shots of tequila and a Molotov cocktail.

From the very first scene, Jack and Keely fight. And by fight, I mean balls-to-the-wall tongue lashings, and not in the “sexual” sense of the phrase—at least not at first. Keely and Jack’s harsh words and hilarious cut-lows are some of the funniest lines I’ve read in any book recently. Of all the books in this series, this one that had me laughing constantly.

Jack has a tough Alpha male exterior that only Keely seems to be able to penetrate. Speaking of penetrate—there’s plenty of that too!

When Keely and Jack are suddenly put in a position to work together in order to get something they both desperately need to boost their careers, they end up in a fake engagement to one another and must make their families, friends and colleagues believe they’re in it for the long haul.

All Jacked Up is currently tied for my favorite with book five of the series, Rough, Raw and Ready. I’ve adored Keely from pretty much the first time she came on the scene way back in book one. Her snarky, comedic banter makes her the most interesting character in the series IMHO. Being a little sister myself, I connected to Keely in the fact that sometimes big brothers think they know what’s best for us, even when we’re sure we can stand on our own two feet. Keely has five big brothers—which is pretty much my worst nightmare.

What I loved about All Jacked Up, is the way the hero and heroine grow together. For a book to be believable, I think character growth is one of the most vital ingredients. Keely and Jack have technically been growing throughout a time frame of well over a decade in the Rough Riders series since they actually meet when Keely is just 16. Once they're thrust into a very adult situation in All Jacked Up, their growth is based on learning to put aside old beefs, and accepting how something neither thought they wanted, is actually everything they need.

Overall, every book in this series is a fun, sexy, fast read. If you don’t think you’re into cowboys, don’t knock em’ till you try em, because I can pretty much guarantee you’ll love them after you read book one of Rough Riders!(less)

I loved this chapter in the colorful McKay family. Even though I was a bit disappointed how "hickish" Keely seemed to be in her own story when in all of the other books she always seemed a bit more refined then the rest of the clan. This was only minor for me, and really didn't take anything away from this fantastic story between Sexy as heck Jack and Keely.

I have read a lot of books about getting engaged or married for reasons other than love and other than Outlander, this has got to be one of my favorites. Keely and Jack are PERFECT for each other. I LOVED this story. And...he he he....my predictions on how the rest of the McKay/West clan would handle the McKay wild child being "tamed", as her mom put it were not even as close or funny to the real thing. I loved Keely's story! I'm overwhelmed I don't know where to start. Lorelie James's dedication interested me, about the men who "claim", not "tame" the wild girls. I've been intrigued with what happened in Colt and India's wedding reception because they've been mentioning it for several books now.

Keely has been my favourite character in the series for a long time now and I'm very glad that I finally got around to reading her story. It is my favourite in the series.

Story wise, it's very predictable. Man and woman have mutual dislike for each other but MASSIVE amounts of sexual tension. They keep away from each other only to find out if they fake an engagement, it could be mutually beneficial business wise.

All Jacked Up continues my love affair with the Lorelei James’s McKay family. What can I say I am a cowboy romance hero convert thanks to her Rough Rider series. This review is going to be rather short, but sweet because I LOVED absolutely everything about this story.

I loved Jack. I love his drive for success despite his ill conceived intentions. He is like so many Americans who live to work and the concept of “more” is never enough. I loved Jack. I love his drive for success despite his ill conceived intentions. He is like so many Americans who live to work and the concept of “more” is never enough. Yet despite this flaw, and even though he’s a little bit Dom, he’s a whole lot sweet underneath all of his tough GQ exterior. Love him!

And Keely…she’s who I would like to be when I grow up. Even if I am already waaaay older than she is supposed to be. She is who she is and does not make apologies for her life or how she chooses to lead it. And lead it she has. We have had glimpses of her character in most of the Rough Rider books. She’s fun, and caring, and no one does more for her family than she does. She’s the exact opposite to Jack. She works to live and her work is her passion.

I loved that the sparks flew, despite the obvious attraction because both had fallen into a pattern of baiting bad behavior from each other. And unlike a lot of contemporary romances where the heat level is high, the evolution of their relationship is not based solely on sex. The reader isn’t left wondering how they went from barely tolerating each others presence....to realizing they love each other just because of a few tussles between the sheets so to speak. You get to experience how they transform from enemies, to partners in crime, to lovers, and finally to being “in love” with each other. It’s one of the things I loved most about this story.

For me, this was a perfect romance read. It had everything that I love about a romance no matter the genre. There is not one thing that I wish were different….except for this: I hated for it to end. I was left basking in the glow of a reader high…a romance euphoria if you will. I hated to start another book. I knew I was going to loose that joy of just having completed reading a fantastic story. It would be inevitable that the next book couldn't possibly live up to my experiences while reading All Jacked Up. So what was my solution to this dilemma you might ask? I read a different book by Lorelei James that I had not read yet :) Sadly, I’ve now read her backlist and will have to patiently wait until next year for her new book, Corralled: A Blacktop Cowboys Novel, which I happen to already have on pre-order at Amazon because I am just that impatient to get my booklover hands on it! To summarize...All Jacked Up is one of my favorite reads of the year.

Ratings: 5.0 stars (if I could give it more I would!)

p.s. if you haven’t read any of the previous Rough Riders series, I highly recommend them, but unlike some of the others I DO think you can read this one as a stand alone and not feel lost amidst all of the secondary characters that comprise the McKay and West families.(less)

Historic preservation rules require a certified restoration specialist to oversee the project, and Jack's the man for the job. Despite a history of antagonism between them, Jack agrees to take on the job, with a small caveat - that they get engaged. Jack needs to play the part of a family man to get a large contract in conservative Utah, and Keely needs a restoration specialist. Thusly, a sham engagement is born, and hijinks ensue.

All Jacked Up is a treat to read from start to finish. James builds sexual tension up slowly and stretches the emotional conflict to span the entire book. There are no superfluous sex scenes here like in some previous books. Each scene peels another layer of their defenses away, revealing the happy couple buried far beneath.

Each character maintains their personalities. They begin the book two hot heads and they end the book as hot heads. James avoided turning one or the other into an acquiescent limp rag. Instead, they continue to bicker, but the bickering changes in tone and the make up sex gets hotter as their attachment grows. These two are that couple you know who love to argue all the time, but are unequivocally devoted to each other, even if they'd never admit it out loud. James has them work through their insecurities to get what they both want, but aren't brave enough to ask for.

Like previous books in the series, All Jacked up does suffer from a Parade of Past Protagonists. Anyone picking this up as a standalone would be dizzy trying to keep track of the secondary characters and their army of offspring, who truthfully add little to the story beyond fan service (not that kind.) If James had focused on a smaller circle of her family and friends, rather than inundating the book with every relation she's created, it would have made for a much tighter narrative.

All told, I found this to be the strongest book in the series. The focus on the hero and heroine was refreshing and their issues were worked through thoroughly, slowly and believably.

James has tapped into a winning idea with this series....a tight-knit family and all of their friends (so you get tons of awesome secondary characters) dealing with real-life troubles (lots of good conflict) get to exhibit their Neanderthal alpha male tendencies with the sassy gals who are leading them on a merry, merry chase (super hot sexy times). Some of the books have M/M relationships, and some have multi-partner groups, etc. I like my cowboy sex old-fashioned and simple: One man, one woman, and some fringe-y chaps.

Anyhoo, this book was a total winner. James has created some very unique characters in this story...Keely is a bad-girl on the outside, but a hard working, ambitious gal on the inside, and tired of living with her over-bearing family's constant interference. She has a dream and she's willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it. "Whatever it takes" is entering into a fake engagement (one of my fav themes) with Jack Donohue, a super competitive and sexy workoholic "suit" who might not be wearing a cowboy hat, but his alpha-male dominating personality is just as crazy as the rancher boys. Unlike some erotica that skimps on the character arcs and storyline, this book has it all. The story is solid, and I love how both of these characters come to terms with their own shortcomings and needs, as well as falling in love (and lust) with each other. The huge black moment fight-from-hell scene at the end is one of the best I've read, and the follow-up between Keely's brothers and Jack is fantastic.

There is snappy dialogue, perfect pacing, incredibly hot sex scenes, and even an evil villainess in high-heeled pumps. My only beef with the story is that the bitchy villainess doesn't get what's coming to her (I'm a vengeful gal, and I like to see pay-back), and the epilogue was sort of lame, IMO. Otherwise, this book is close to perfect. Sexy, funny, and satisfying.

Giddy up, cowboy! Lorelei James has created another winner.

First, a confession: I am one of those people who has to read a series in order. It drives me nuts to flit around randomly in a series. Lorelei James’ Rough Riders series is an exception to that rule. I don’t know why, but I haven’t been able to manage to read this series in order. Basically, what this means is that I’m not up on all the characters and their histories.

I loved Keely and Jack! These two both had strong personalities and when they got together it was like trying to mix oil and water, which we all know is impossible – until you add a third ingredient (in this case, sex. Hot, hot sex.). (Okay, that’s enough science today, lol)

There is a history between them that is hinted at, but we don’t find out until later in the story why Keely is so mad at Jack. One of the things I loved about the story is that as we read along, Keely and Jack uncover little bits about each other and they begin to view each other in a different light and a genuine relationship develops. That’s not to say there aren’t any bumps, or that their personalities don’t clash, because they do:

“Aw. And I so give a flying fuck what kind of bad day you’ve had when I’ve been here alone for the last three goddamn days, fielding questions about our supposed relationship.”
“For Christsake, it wasn’t like I was on vacation. I’ve been in Iowa. In cornfield hell.”
“Did you say you got cornholed in Iowa?”
Jack actually growled.
She grinned. Keely one; Jack zero. (page 85)

The dichotomy between Keely’s folksy, country lifestyle and Jack’s driven, professional one was interesting to read. Keely certainly had her hands full trying to mingle in Jack’s world, and Jack had quite a few “WTF” moments dealing with Keely’s people. The way these two characters support each other without losing themselves is a trick not all authors can accomplish, but Ms. James does it well. I’ve read about five of the Rough Riders books, and I have to say, this one is my favorite so far.(less)

i have to admit i was a little iffy about this one because i wasnt sure if this one would hold a lot of the elements i have grown to love in the series. still, after all we read about keely i was dying to see her story unfold.

the fleshing out of keely was done really well. we pretty much saw her form other family member's perspective for so long. usually saying how no one can control the wold child. in book seven we heard a completely different side with Cam. this story took that thread and show...more

Keely is used to being queen bee in the family, but I have to say she met her match in this book. Jack is not only her match but has secretly wanted Keely all along. Going from not being able to stand each other to not being able to get enough from each other was a great story line. I loved how her family stood by her in making this choices and when her brothers happen to take matters in their hands when they think their baby sister has been hurt.

Lorelei James filled this book with not only romance, love, and devotion but also tons of witty comments. I was laughing at some of the things Keely said to Jack and his comebacks were off the charts amusing. Finding out as the series goes on about the prior characters is not only interesting but insightful. Who wouldn't want to find out more about the Mckay Family and what they have been up to.

If you haven’t read any of the previous Rough Riders series, I highly recommend them. Regardless if you read them in order or out-of-order it's not hard to keep up with these cowboys/ cowgirls and how they finally get tamed. This was a great read. It is for sure rereading material. Now off to get started on Raising Kane.

I love enemies to lovers romances so I enjoyed this book in many respects. The chemistry between Keely and Jack was super hot and I liked how they had to let go their misconceptions and learn to enjoy the things they supposedly hated about the other.

That Lorelei James could deliver with how high my personal bar for this story was set speaks volumes about her talent already; that she could craft a hero that so perfectly matches Keely, unspeakably a tough, independent character already known and loved by readers, proves that James is a powerhouse, and this is one of my all-time top 3 romance couples.

The setup is that Jack and Keely both need each other's help in their professional lives, which ends up resulting in a fake engagement and a melding of their personal lives slowly but surely in ways they never could've imagined. This is not a new plot device, and that may sound like exactly what it is, but these characters make it fresh and new. The fact that they HATE each other going into it results in really snappy, quick-fire dialogue filled with sparks of chemistry. Watching them try to fight their physical attraction, particularly during their engagement party toward the beginning of the story, is a ton of fun, but once they give into it, it's incredible. There's lots and lots of steamy sex, but it never gets old because every scene shows another layer of how Keely and Jack fit so well together. She lets down her guard, and he shows just how amazingly sweet he can be, and the reader gets to see every step of their falling in love. There were many, many times when this story made me cry.

This book is made even more perfect by the fact that there was no menage (totally unnecessary with these two) and no children directly involved with the main couple. Of course there is still lots of McKay family interaction, but James always handles this deftly, so it didn't really take away, though she could write scene after scene of Keely and Jack grocery shopping, a quiet night at home, or a simple discussion about weekend plans, and I'd be completely enthralled. That's how good they are. She also showcases this couple in a short, free e-book titled "Slow Ride" that centers around Jack and Keely at their wedding reception and the beginning of their honeymoon. I hope James includes many glimpses of them in future books - I would love another short story focused solely on them too. They never get old because they feel like real people, those lucky few that really find a true love happily ever after, and the journey Jack and Keely take to get there is the stuff legends are made of. Throughout the last 7 stories we have watched Keely grow. I was so excited to get to read her story!! Jack was not who I thought she would end up with. But boy their relationship is fun to read. I love their hate to love story.

I was so excited to finally get to Keely! I love that girl and I knew it would take a super special man to capture her heart. I loved her and Jack together- they were completely combustible.
