This was really a rather wretched book. I read another book by this author that I actually enjoyed, so when I was able to pick this one up, I did so. Now I wish I'd left it where I found it. Sigh.
There was a little bit of interest regarding how to alter one's appearance and how to try and leave no trace of yourself in travel. But those spots of interest did not make up for the weak plot.

I liked this book for its varying POV narrations, its intricate plot, the extensiveness of plot (how the plot had several sections to it) and its epilogue. (Epilogues can be cheesy, but this one was very necessary!) Okay, sometimes the details given were too much (like what how they discarded papers they didn't need), and especially overly detailed sex-scenes that took the book from mystery/suspense to literary voyeurism (another word might work better here).(Aside: why don't books have rating

I really enjoyed this but I wasn't feeling they last few pages. I'm not sure why. Maybe because I was expecting a big to do/reactions about everyones secrets coming out and well there wasn't, everyone handled it pretty well. But please don't be discouraged, I haven't read a lot of modern spy/assassin novels but this has inspired me to look into more.

Okay, kiss me while I sleep if you want. But mostly wake me up when the novel gets better.
The plot is far more intriguing than the writing itself, which contains generic descriptions and depersonalized dialogues.
CIA professional killer Lily Mansfield (good choice of last name here) plots revenge on the family responsible for the death of her daughter and dear friends. After the first killing, nothing much moves, plot-wise or style-wise. I'll take static if the writing itself More...

Too much filler. Terrible ending. Retired CIA agents were hired to destroy a lab which had created a virus they planned to release on humans.
The owner of the lab, Salvatore, and the Doctor were able to continue the work after the explosion. Salvatore then killed the two agents and their daughter. Lily is a CIA agent who kills Salvatore as revenge for his murdering her friends. CIA then sends Lucas to kill her but Lucas helps her for awhile with her plans to destroy the lab. The More...

This was so good and timely that it was scarey because it dealt with a flu-virus that would go worldwide and kill millions - very thought-provoking.
It’s a job that makes a killing. Efficient, professional, and without apology, Lily Mansfield is a hired assassin, working as a contract agent for the CIA. Her targets are the powerful and corrupt, those who can’t be touched by the law.

Audio version of this book is great. As usual Dick Hill and Joyce Bean both give brilliant performances portraying the characters.
Overall, I liked the story. I absolutely loved McCain. He was funny, somewhat sensitive, and very sexy. Lilly was also a very strong character and I loved that about her.
The storyline was very good with a few plot twists, but not over the top suspenseful. I have to say, I would have rated this as a 3 or a 3.5 if it weren't for the ending. It w More...

I liked this book, but was again thrown off that this was a John Medina book and he was mentioned once just in passing. I think the author needs to come up with a better name for this series, something about spies as that is what the book revolves around.
At first I didn't like Lily, she was so cold hearted, but once we got the background on her I realized that it was what she needed to survive. Swain was fun from the start. I think he was in a bad place with what he had to do, e More...

So, I tried not to let this get to me but I couldn't help it. When I read this was about a female hired assassin I was really excited to read this thinking it was going to be somewhat like the Bourne Identity but a female lead. Well, that didn't really work out for me so I tried to get into the story and characters and I think they were good but it was hard not to be let down when I had a very different idea of what the book and the female lead were going to be like. How can you write a femal

Lily is a CIA assassin who's decided to go rogue. Salvatore Nervi killed her friends and their young daughter and she's going to take revenge. Lucas Swain, a contract agent, is called in to bring Lily back to the states for 'debriefing.' When he finds out what Lily's up to, he decides to help her out before taking her in.
This is an all right book. It's easily the least well written and well-plotted book in the series, but if I was judging it on it's own merits, as opposed t comparing it to More...

Unabridged audiobook version - from Speaking of Audiobooks, Male Narrators 6/08/09
Narrated by Joyce Bean and Dick Hill
This one worked very well as a moving romantic suspense tale with an above average female narrator and only average male narrator. It unfortunately suffers in grade due to the fact that I can't help but compare it to other Howard romantic suspenses. It's better than the average romantic suspense book but doesn't measure up as well to her others. Also I had to More...

I would give "amazing" rating to this book if weren't for the fact the plot isn't THAT intriguing. I read this book in 3 bites actually (even though I had a lot of homework, I didn't care). This was because I personally LOVED the relationship that grow up between Lily Mansfield and Lucas Swain, the making-the-love description scenes were very well made: They didn't sound disgusting nor dirty but exciting. All I wanted was to read more and more about their relationship. You felt they we

Lily Mansfield is a woman hell bent on vengeance & revenge against the powerful Nervi organization operated in Paris. Seeking justice for the assassination of her close friends Tina and Averill (both of whom had previously being contract killers themselves) and their adopted daughter Zia who had actually been found abandoned and starving to death, by Lily on one of her jobs to Croatia. Since Lily’s life as a hired killer didn’t provide the most stable environment to raise a little girl, Lily had

This book is written more in the way of mysterys, which I enjoy as much as romance. I don`t think its a particularly Romantic Book,Probably because the Heroine is an assasin for the CIA and acts very cold blooded thru the whole book of course thats the theme of the book..she has become so cold blooded that she is beyond dangerous, and in this case I guess she has good reason as her best friends and the daughter she got for them is assasinated by the Nervi family, who are big time financiers and sli

This book was lent to me by a friend since I liked another book by the author. I think her strength is her characters, which are very well built, and stories that have a very fast action, resembling a thriller in which we only want to know what is awaiting for us just some pages ahead. This book doesn't disappoint in that aspect, but the first book I read had one interesting twist in the end, the same didn't happened here and this is why I give it 3,5.

Ditto, Lea's review, on every point.
Actually, I almost didn't listen to it at all. I think I bailed and then gave it another shot around disk #3 or 4. The intro was too tedious for an audiobook; it became interesting when the action began.
However, the male narrator was just too old and and also unable to stretch enough for the range of male characters he was expected to portray.
The female narrator was sufficient.

2.5 stars: OK romantic suspense book...not as good as many of her others.
The story was slow for the first half. When she finally met the hero, I found it completely unrealistic that she would trust him with all the details that quickly. Story overall wasn't very original either.
Linda Howard is a great author but her books can be hit and miss. Some of my favs of hers include Cry No More, Mr Perfect, and Open Season.

This is most likely my favorite book by Linda Howard at this point! If you like her, this may become your favorite, too.... The hero is strong, but still sensitive. The heroine is strong but still sensitive... oh wait, I've already said that... This book tries to make the heroine as strong or stronger than the hero, but she is still all woman. The action is there, the romance is there, and the ending is tricky and sublime....

Really disappointing. Whatever ingredient mix has worked for Linda Howard was sadly lacking in this book. And I hated the end. HATED! Not enough room for working on your own with where the story goes after you put it down. I just felt betrayed by Howard. The only reason there's two stars is because of Lucas Swains obsession with fast cars and childlike petulance to drive anything with less horsepower!

Sometimes it's ok to say no to books. Even when they are free. Because when you have them, and they are then taking up space on your bookshelves (or closet space in a box, as it is) you feel compelled to read them before you give them away to the next unsuspecting person.
Maybe that's just me. But I have got to quit saying "Sure Grandma!" when she gives me boxes of paperbacks.

Another classic from the master, Linda Howard. An exciting plot combined with a big mystery, a heartbroken CIA assassin, Lily, and a hilarious CIA field agent, Swain, make for a read that is exciting, fun, and hard to put down. I love Howard's characters almost as much as her plots, both are usually flawless. This is a winner and I loved it from start to finish.

Too much repetition of facts. I didn't need to get the same info from 3 (plus) characters to understand what was going on. Overkill. I wasn't a fan of the relationship between the two main characters either. There was plenty of opportunity to develop it, but instead we got boring filler and a flat, unrealistic relationship.

It was a favourite read because i did liked the way the author combined action(CIA operatives,or ex-operatives) and romance.
I especially liked the details. It was fascinating.
As for the main characters, Lucas was a fun, laid out man, and so much different from Lily. And that, with their chemestry was awesome.

I have this paperback, but found the audio at the library and decided to give it a try. I am very glad I did. The female and male parts were done by two good readers and the story captured my interest right away.
My first choice of reading material is usually not one with government conspiracies or the CIA, but I have read quite a few I've enjoyed very much, and this one certainly goes towards the top of the list.

Awesome story! I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and what an exciting ride! The author does a fantastic job of drawing the reader in and pulls the rug out from under you with a HUGE twist at the end. Well done! I really enjoyed the characters and found them both to be equally humorous and likable.

This is my second favorite Linda Howard book (After the Night being my first). The Hero in this book is completely sexy and the bit about the car made me laugh until I cried. Great character development and the ending had my heart racing. Could not have been better. One I will keep and re-read for life!

It should be 4.5 stars. There is not such a half star rating. But still I can't push it to 5 or lower it to 4.
Strong heroine. Quick and brief. Enjoyable and full of twists. I'd really love that the author give a bit deeper and details, especially the last two chapters towards ending.
