I decided to read Vampire Academy because it was on a list of books most likely to inherit Twilight's throne (http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-s...) .

Before I harp on about the first Vampire Academy book, I want to comment on the series as a whole: these books are really readable and quite good fun. They pull fewer punches than a lot of other supernatural novels, and the series gets quite a bit darker as it progresses. The characters encounter myriad trials--mental instability,...more

I loved this book! I'm not into YA books, but I loved this one. Maybe it was because even though it was a YA book, I didn't remember it was about a girl of 17 until she said she was that age. The heroine in this book doesn't behave like a teen, and Dimitri for sure isn't. I can't wait to read more about them.

If you read this book knowing that it is YA, you'll love it. I read other paranormal YA books, and didn't like them this much. It is better than the house of night series and the...more

What a great first book to a series - I really enjoyed this, I couldn't put it down it was so good. I was expecting something a little more 'young' adult (along the lines of the House of Night series) but instead the characters are all quite mature. The book itself is written with more of a mature tone than other YA books I have read, and I much prefer this style of writing. I think it helped that one of the characters was twenty-four years old.

Well here I am, finally writing my review for Vampire Academy after finishing it about four months ago (Wow, has it really been that long already?). I’ve had many long debates with myself over what I wanted to say, and now I think it’s time I finally said them. I do expect a few trolls ( if they’re aren’t any then I’ll be very surprised), since this book appears to be extremely popular, and my opinion on it does not coin...more

Updated 12/25/2010 How naive I was two years ago! Poor me didn't know what would become of the new promising writer Richelle Mead and this series. What started out as a new kind of paranormal series where romance took a back seat to political intrigue and adventure, became just another money-milking venture slapped together in a matter of weeks and stuffed in hardcovers for maximum profit. I feel mildly ashamed for recommending these books to so many people now. So I am updating this review to m...more

I was first introduced to this series when a young woman saw me hopelessly scouring the Barnes & Noble Teen section, desperate to satisfy my vampire fix, and recommended the series to me. (I went through a post-Twilight period where I basically bought random YA vampire books hoping they would scratch my new-found paranormal itch... I look back on this time with mild embarrassment.) I was sceptical because the title seemed a little "obvious" to me, and frankly the cover art didn't appea...more

Best. Vampire. Saga. EVER. Just that. I dare anyone come and tell me otherwise. It is funny, witty, the plots are amazing, and the characters are great (well.... maybe Lissa is not great, but hey, she is just the one flaw). If you like vampire books, you must read it. If you hate vampire books, you must read it. What the hell, whether you like or dislike books in general, this book is a MUST HAVE. Because I say so (OK, me and thousands of people just like me) Twilight? What the hell is Twilight?

Where I come from, there are these type of girls who would literally throw themselves out at any white boy. I'm not sure why, but it seems that they have this idea that Caucasian = hotness. Boys, being boys, well ... they snatch up every opportunity. What really bugs me though, is not only the immense cheapness of these girls, but the extent to which they will go out there and hunt these western boys. Don't get too eager and start asking me where this paradise of easy sex is, though. They're not...more

I'm currently reading the third book in this series, so my review will probably end up being pretty general over what I've read so far.

I think the mark of a good series is when you feel like they are all one big book, when everything flows and fits together properly. I hate when one book is really good and then the next one stinks.

The mark of a good AUTHOR is when the chemistry with the characters is real. I don't necessarily mean just romantic chemistry. The main charac...more

I didnt LOVE this book... but it was pretty good. The authour tended to waffle on a little bit, so it felt like the story was shorter than it actually looked. But otherwise I did like the story. I adored the kickass female heroine and I think I want to marry Dimitri.

Overall it was a 3.5 out of 5 rather than a four, but since it doesnt give ".5" of a star on goodreads, I may as well give it the benefit of the doubt. Four stars it is!

Vampire Academy sucked me right back into the vampire world. I was a bit of a vampire addict a few years ago, but with all the Hollywood hype and television shows, vampires seemed to be everywhere. My heart needed a break from the genre to build some darkness and mystery back into the vampire lore. I believe I found the right series to spark up my love again!

Richelle Mead’s world filled with secrets and shadows captured my imagination right from page one. Thi...more

First, I have some mentions to make:
Maybe I'm wrong (as I've never paid too much attention to the horror mythical creatures in my culture) but as far as I can remember I've thought that 'moroi' were similar to what you call 'zombies' (without a virus making them living-dead, but nevertheless similar in the appearance and the need to kill human beings), and 'strigoi' were some sort of ghosts, the harming kind (if you've read 'Anna dressed in Blood' you'll have a pretty good idea...more

So I said I wouldn't read this after being warned about 10 million times that they stop being worth the bother after book 3. I said it repeatedly, earnestly... and then I caved. I mean, what do you do when you've nothing ahead of you but a day at the library and when you turn around...dum, dum, dum... there it is, the internationally praised series that you swore you would never... but then what if you felt different?... how can you expect to deal with not finding out for yourself? So I guess I'...more

this book, actually almost dropped my jaw.
this book was more amazing than I expected. you know, because they said this book was like another series of Wicked Lovely or Evermore (which I didn't like them) but turned out to be like this. well, now I'm a fan of Richelle Mead.
my sister found this book title ridiculous which is, I thought so. but who cares about the book title anyway?

first, I didn't like the mythology in this book, too confusing and Mead didn't describe them c...more

Honestly.. I hated it. I hate it, I hate it, I can't stand it! Rose, the whiny little bitch.. LEAVE LISSA ALONE! CHRISTIAN IS COOL! God, I really dislike her. It was.. boring, no, irritation can't be that boring.. since I was imagining myself strangling Rose :D That really can't be dull.
Anyways, I thought the author used the word "sexy" waaaay to many times at one page. It was sexy here, it was sexy there, it was sexy in space.. whatever, I can't stand it. I just didn't like i...more

Well for crying in a bucket, THIS, is a good series.

It was only about 6 months ago that I became a frequent reader.
Yes, dear Goodreaders. It was Twilight that did it. But in my defence, I only read the Twilight series because I had seen the first three movies already, and I'll be FEKKED if I was going to wait another goddamn year to find out who Bella chose in the end!

Regardless, the point is this.
I was on board with world of all things paranormal, which is why I picked up the Vampire Academy ...more

I’m not just joking around when I say that this book—and the series it belongs to—is super famous. No, not even famous, it is PHAMOUS! Seriously, everyone has read this series. Except me, of course…until now. Because after reading Vampire Academy, I am a loyal Richelle Mead fan. I know it won’t be long before I devour the rest of this series, and move on to some of her other works.

Rose was really strong, which I liked. She was confident and stuck up for herself and her friends, even ...more

This book is very...sensual, if that is the right word. Which is normal and not necessarily means freaky. To be honest, I think most people are attracted to 'underworld' stories for its sensuality (CMIIW). The animal instinct these creatures possessed is both scary and sexy at the same time. Hell, even bloodsucking scene is sexy (damn this dirty mind of mine!) Throw in the rage of puberty, and you have one hell of a book...

I wouldn't elaborate much, but these are my reasons why VA is...more

So many people talk about Twilight and miss this super great book......

I liked Twilight, but I had a hard time dealing with Bella. I thought she was just too...girly for some having with vampires. I wanted someone that could stand with them in a fight and not cower behind....Enter Rose. She is the bodyguard to Lissa, a vampire princess that must attend school and keep out of the clutches of the dark side. Rose is aggressive and hard headed, sometimes risking Lissa while trying to pro...more

Love this book so much!!! So much awesomeness!!! I love all of these characters, the plot, the romance-all of it!! It was a hell of a book!

****Proper review to come****

OKAY, upon purchasing this book, I never really planned on reading it. I thought it was another Twilight, which sure I am a Twilight fan but not of the books. Just the movies. However, after learning I am so far behind on this series (which apparently is a crime, don't ever tell anyone you've never read it...more

I must confess myself surprised by this title. I expected something like a crossing between the Twilight Saga with the series House of Night (of which I only read a chapter that didn't captivate me), but I came across something quite different and, to some extent, enjoyable.

Let me start with the positive points. I really liked the vampire world the author presents, with Dhampirs and two types of vampires: the Moroi, good vampires and living beings, and the Strigoi, the bad vampires and...more

About the characters, well surely the main heroine is real baddass, Rose is...more

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I think it's definitely better than twilight, especially because the lead character here, Rose Hathaway, is such a stronger character than the i-fall-apart-when-my-vampire-boyfriend-abandons-me Bella. Rose is so kick-ass! Besides her, the plot is incredibly engrossing (I read the entire book in one night, I couldn't stop reading!) and it's an exhilarating fresh take on the vampire myth, one which I really love. The romantic interest, Dimitri, is the hottest character ever, a...more

I read this book to see if my sister would like it, she really liked the Twilight books and the reviews around here hinted that this series was just as good and even better than Twilight. Even though I haven't read and don't really have the intention to read, the Twilight books, this one I liked. My sister told me about Twilight, so I have and idea what it's about, and the whole idea of vampire in this book sounded much better and meaningful to me. Oh, you know, typical vampire book: kills brain cells, but it was addicting. It was quite similar to the house of night series in concept, but with a few key differences here and there. Other than that, the usual – blood sex blood sex blood sex blood etc. !!! yaaay.

My main issue with it was mostly the main character. I mean, I like a good, strong female character. But there's a fine line between having self-confidence and being conceited, and, well, I got a little annoyed after the f...more

Ok this was a really good book except for one major thing.... the ending. I was disappointed by that ending that I really wanted to scream.

I felt it was way too rushed with the whole Victor Natalie thing tied up in a bow. I don't want to spoil things so I won't say anymore.

I did like the other characters and the story was really intresting with little bits thrown in for good measure.

Though this was aimed at young adults, I slipped into it easy and could imagi...more

Sooo much better than twilight!

Chapter2 awal rada2 puyeng dgn istilah moroi, dhampir n strigoi -_-"

Rose down to earth bgt menurut gw.
Dia bs flirting, jealous wktu Lissa 'jauh' dr dia.
Blak2an bgt, trus walopun dia udah ada feeling ke dimitri dia tetap jd dirinya sendiri, gak ngelupain 'tugas' dia apa..
Tough, n badass heroine!

Kalo Dimitri, hmmm jd inget lagunya Katy Perry.
He's HOT then he's COLD.

“The spell. Victor said you had to want me... to care about me... for it to work." When he didn't say anything, I tried to grip his shirt, but my fingers were too weak. "Did you? Did you want me?"
His words came out thickly. "Yes, Roza. I did want you. I still do. I wish... we could be together."
"Then why did you lie to me?"
We reached the clinic, and he managed to open the door while still holding me. As soon as he stepped inside, he began yelling for help.
"Why did you lie?" I murmured again.
Still holding me in his arms, he looked down at me. I could hear voices and footsteps getting closer.
"Because we can't be together."
"Because of the age thing, right?" I asked. "Because you're my mentor?"
His fingertip gently wiped away a tear that had escaped down my cheek. "That's part of it," he said. "But also... well, you and I will both be Lissa's gaurdians someday. I need to protect her at all cost. If a pack of Strogoi come, I need to throw my body between them and her."
I know that. Of course that's what you have to do." The black sparkles were dancing in front of my eyes again. I was fading out.
"No. If I let myself love you, I won't throw myself in front of her. I'll throw myself in front of you.”
