Naughty children ground into animal feed. Feasted upon by ducks.
*refuses to heed 'conform or die' message*

Rhythm, rhyme, and line collaborate with wickedly intoxicating result.

The book jacket says it best:
By turns malevolent, jovial, sardonic, diabolical and bloodthirsty, these verses tellingly castigate hypocrisy, stodginess, stupidity, egotism. drunkenness, and other human foibles. The English translations, printed opposite the original German, are ingenious and faithful, with spice and sense intact.

(warning: the rhythms and rhyme only work if one reads this with Britis...more

Another Victorian German cautionary tale, (STRUWWELPETER being another famous example), follows a town's 2 child pranksters. Some may call it dark and violent, but considering what the boys did (destroying live stock, theft, near manslaughter, destruction of personal property, breaking and entering, even bombing the Town Minister!) would land them 50 to life in the states, it's a mute point. Despite their despicable acts, the two boys are considered hallmarks of Germanic childhood and are consider...more

Gehört in jedes Bücherregal.

One of my books of Classic German Literature that I got for Christmas. It's a series of short poems about the very naughty Max & Moritz who came to a very sticky and final end.

This is how it starts:

Ach, was muss man oft von bösen
Kindern hören oder lesen!
Wie zum Beispiel hier von diesen,
Welche Max und Moritz heißen;
Die, anstatt durch weise Lehren
Sich zum Guten zu bekehrren,
Oftmals noch darüber lachten
Und sich heimlich lustig machte...more

Great book for kids. Teaches lessons, rhymes and is fun. I enjoyed it greatly, I think my nephew will enjoy it too. :) I know as a kid I would have enjoyed it greatly more. :D I hope he does too!

This was one of my favourite books as a child. Max and Moritz wreak havoc amongst the villagers and their flocks.
Aylena
childhood memories and still I remember few of the rhymes, since my mother used to tell them.

Dale, remember this one in Minerts German class? :)

Rather gruesome as German children's stories seem to have a tendency to be - but then again, if you look at English ones you could probably say the same.
Mckinley
mischievious boys, read in German
Daniel
a classic one with nice illustrations

I so wanted to write a rhyming review in six different languages, but then I realized I couldn't. I did, however, actually read every line in this book. I had the most trouble with the Latin and the Italian, but the German, Spanish, French and English were pretty funny. It's not the best children's story (and it's definitely not an American story), but I guess it's something of a classic. I'd love to find more polyglot books like this one.

I read the dual language edition. Original published in 1865. Classic story, well-known in Europe. Didactic in words and plot--the boys get chopped up into tiny pieces by the miller after they’ve played 7 nasty tricks. I felt the translation used too much freedom to force the rhymes into English.
Still, it was well worth reading.

Cool, the famous stories of "Max & Moritz" in Esperanto! I really like the translation and the rhymes. It conveys the classical humor of the original very well.

I remember this book from my childhood. I didn't even have to know how to read to get the message. Needless to say I was a little angel!
Laura
A lovely classic tale in which two unruly boys are punished in a most severe manner.
Brittany
A story of two naughty boys and what happens to them.
