My daughter had received this as a review copy. I borrowed it from her shelf. This is definitely a YA novel, but it has enough depth to the main characters to keep an older reader involved.

This is the second book in the Demon Princess series by Michelle Rowen. I absolutely loved the first book Reign or Shine and this book was just as good. It is a fun read with a well developed world and a lead character who is believable.

This is a fun series! It's a well-written YA paranormal series about a half-demon, half-human princess who only recently learned of her powers. Nikki Donovan, reluctant royalty of the demonic Shadowlands, is back for her second book -- and what a book it is! This is a series that is thought-provoking, plot-driven, and filled with world-building goodies that keep the pages turning. Accessible to younger readers but carrying darker themes that will still resonate with adults, Reign Check is high-quality.

Reign Check is definitely better than the first book in terms of writing and the plot (still fairly predictable but less predictable,especially on Rhys's future Queen it's so obvious it's gonna be Nikki. And from the first book you'd already guessed Melinda is a demon slayer who conveniently had her eyes on the faery king.

So I’m behind on posting my reviews of books I’ve read. I can’t quite remember when I finished this but, like the last Demon Princess book, it was a quick and action-packed read. Rowen sets up the series nicely and is able to segue into her second book easily. This book picks up seamlessly from the first and has more love triangle and teen drama that the young adult readers love. Maybe it's because they both have the word "princess" in their titles, but the Demon Princess books, more specifically Nikki herself, remind me of the Princess Diaries books. The main difference being, of course, that instead of being a princess of a random tiny European principality, Nikki is the princess of the Shadowlands. In my own very not humble opinion, that is way cooler.

Reign Check is the sequel to Reign or Shine by Michelle Rowen in the Demon Princess series and after the first one...I was a little leery going into this one. I wasn't really too sure how much I would like it since the first one was just OK for me. That said, I liked Reign Check soooo much better! What was better this time around? Everything was. The plot, the characters, and the love story were all more developed and not as predictable.

If you're thinking that you need to read the first one before getting to the second book, don't bother. This second book is good on it's own. Reign Check is a teenage romance between demons, shadows, human and king faery. Not quite your typical high school only human love story. If you liked the first book, you'll love this one even more! Nikki is a delightful character, I just absolutely love her energy, her courage and her grasp of "right" vs "wrong". Her life is just one great big adventure since she has learned she has a demon king for a father. She gets through her crazy experiences with great leaps, even if her confidence is still a little shaky (like any teen girl!). She consistently stands up for her beliefs.

This book is about Nikki Donovan having to deal with the faery king being at her school to investigate her to see if she will fulfill the prophecy. A while ago, digging through a discount bin at Target, I unearthed this book. I didn't know at the time that it was the second in a series, and I am glad I didn't since usually I like to read a series in order. This wasn't the case here; I fell easily into the Demon world created by Michelle Rowen. The characters are easy to understand, clear in motive and deed. I'm glad I picked up this series. Its a cute, light read about a girl who's half demon (but she's not evil!) and half human; a creature called a "Darkling" that hasn't been seen officially in over a thousand years! If you remember, I was not too pleased with the first installment in this series but babycakes, it’s all about the sequels because I totally loved this one. Often (in particular with Richelle Mead) I find that authors usually hit their stride in the second novel in a series because by that time they are done building the world in which their story is set to occur. As expected Rowen did another great job in writing this one... She put in a lot of exciting aspects in the story... 1.) A love triangle, 2.) I love a good YA story and this was one of the best I've read, along with the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
The best part for me is the fact that Nikki, our heroine, isn't a helpless little 16 year old girl. She has a brain and bravery; she knows what she wants but also knows not to break the rules to get it.
The inclusion of Rhys in this book was great fun to read; while the Nikki and Michael relationship was just.. There are no words! I LOVE it!

Nikki is a teenage girl with one more problem than most: she's also a Darkling. That is, half-human, half-demon. She's also a demon princess. That fact makes life complicated because demon law states that demons cannot have relationships with Shadows (the servant class). And Michael, her boyfriend, is a Shadow. Nikki must deal with a Faerie king stalking her to see if she's dangerous while defending herself and her love for Michael, even if it means standing up to the Demon Council itself.

I think after having such a rough time with Reign or Shine, I was just not motivated to read this one. Though, I do have to say this one impressed me.
Remember that my one major issue with Reign or Shine was our Shadow/Prince/Servant/Thing, Michael. Well, he actually showed he had a backbone in this book! Again, he was kind of stupid (even he admits to it), but he was an idiot with a backbone. I mean, I guess I'd be a bit of a twit if I was stuck in a castle all my life.

Is the sequel that directly follows it, and continues to build onto the world she's built. She adds in more half breeds and more species that we were not necessarily aware of the first time. The hierarchy within the various groups becoming more apparent. It's easy to see how she is growing the world.

I really hope that sales of Reign Check are encouraging to Walker Books because I'm not done with Nikki Donovan, Demon Princess. This series is crying out for resolution. I guess it doesn't help that I read both Reign or Shine and Reign Check back-to-back. Rowen continues to deftly balance witty banter and dark events in a real page turner. I dearly love how sassy Rowen's heroines are and how they always rise to the occasion despite the odds being stacked against them.

After finishing the first novel in the series, Reign or Shine, I've been really looking forward to reading this one. Picking up almost immediately after Reign or Shine ended, Reign Check was another exciting and well done addition to the series.
