My daughter had received this as a review copy. I borrowed it from her shelf. This is definitely a YA novel, but it has enough depth to the main characters to keep an older reader involved.

It was just one week since sixteen year old Nikki had found out that she was a demon and that her father is the demon king of the Shadowlands. This means that Nikki is a princess. Not the kind of pressure that a high school girl needs. Thankfully she has a wonderful friend Melinda at her sid More...

This is the second book in the Demon Princess series by Michelle Rowen. I absolutely loved the first book Reign or Shine and this book was just as good. It is a fun read with a well developed world and a lead character who is believable.

Nikki has returned to school after saving her father (King of the Shadowlands) from assassination from her Aunt. She just wants things to be normal; well as normal as they can be with her Darkling (Half-demon) powers and a Shadow (Michael) for a boyfrie More...

This is a fun series! It's a well-written YA paranormal series about a half-demon, half-human princess who only recently learned of her powers. This installment starts with the 16 year old Fairy king showing up at her high school as an exchange student so he can spy on her. Turns out there's a prophecy that says she will destroy the whole underworld, and he wants to see if he thinks it's true. Nikki is also trying to figure out how to be with her shadow love interest (Michael, the servant assig More...

After saving her father from death, Nikki gets to return to her almost-normal-life in Ontario, Canada. Peace won’t last more than a week end though, because Rhys, the faery king, enrolled in her high school to study the possibility of Nikki being a treat to his people. Everyone, demons and faeries alike are determined to shed the light on a prophecy saying Nikki will destroy them all, or end the princess’ life to prevent it.

I’ll start by saying that if you liked the first book, you w More...

Nikki Donovan, reluctant royalty of the demonic Shadowlands, is back for her second book -- and what a book it is! This is a series that is thought-provoking, plot-driven, and filled with world-building goodies that keep the pages turning. Accessible to younger readers but carrying darker themes that will still resonate with adults, Reign Check is high-quality.

When the king of the faery realm shows up at Nikki's (very human) high-school to spy on her and her half-demon motives, her l More...

If you're thinking that you need to read the first one before getting to the second book, don't bother. This second book is good on it's own. Reign Check is a teenage romance between demons, shadows, human and king faery. Not quite your typical high school only human love story. Part chick lit and part paranormal, Reign Check is a lovable story to start off with. When you think about demons and shadows, evil and dangerous would first come to mind. Obviously, they are the dark creatures of the un More...

If you liked the first book, you'll love this one even more! Nikki is a delightful character, I just absolutely love her energy, her courage and her grasp of "right" vs "wrong". Her life is just one great big adventure since she has learned she has a demon king for a father. She gets through her crazy experiences with great leaps, even if her confidence is still a little shaky (like any teen girl!). She consistently stands up for her beliefs.
I like the addition of More...

A while ago, digging through a discount bin at Target, I unearthed this book. I didn't know at the time that it was the second in a series, and I am glad I didn't since usually I like to read a series in order. This wasn't the case here; I fell easily into the Demon world created by Michelle Rowen. The characters are easy to understand, clear in motive and deed. The storyline is fresh and interesting, with a new type of forbidden love and the start of a love triangle that leaves the reader wonde More...

After all the surprises in Demon Princess: Reign or Shine, Nikki Donovan I still trying to get used to being a Demon Princess. She’s attending school now and while things are going okay, Jason is still acting weird and worse yet, a new boy has captured everyone attention. But this new boy is none other than Rhys, the king of the faery realm who also happens to be in her class. And then of course, Michael shows up, she meets the Queen whose brother wanted to kill her father, and things get a litt More...

If you remember, I was not too pleased with the first installment in this series but babycakes, it’s all about the sequels because I totally loved this one. Often (in particular with Richelle Mead) I find that authors usually hit their stride in the second novel in a series because by that time they are done building the world in which their story is set to occur. This means that they can focus more on the plot details rather than structure and situating the mythos. Am I making sense so far? Yea More...

I love a good YA story and this was one of the best I've read, along with the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
The best part for me is the fact that Nikki, our heroine, isn't a helpless little 16 year old girl. She has a brain and bravery; she knows what she wants but also knows not to break the rules to get it.
The inclusion of Rhys in this book was great fun to read; while the Nikki and Michael relationship was just.. There are no words! I LOVE it!

I think after having such a rough time with Reign or Shine, I was just not motivated to read this one. Though, I do have to say this one impressed me.

Remember that my one major issue with Reign or Shine was our Shadow/Prince/Servant/Thing, Michael. Well, he actually showed he had a backbone in this book! Again, he was kind of stupid (even he admits to it), but he was an idiot with a backbone. I mean, I guess I'd be a bit of a twit if I was stuck in a castle all my life.

Is the sequel that directly follows it, and continues to build onto the world she's built. She adds in more half breeds and more species that we were not necessarily aware of the first time. The hierarchy within the various groups becoming more apparent. It's easy to see how she is growing the world.

We're introduced to more characters of most species as well, all without ignoring characters (good, bad, or indifferent) from the first book. She has a really good basis to continue the ser More...

I really hope that sales of Reign Check are encouraging to Walker Books because I'm not done with Nikki Donovan, Demon Princess. This series is crying out for resolution. I guess it doesn't help that I read both Reign or Shine and Reign Check back-to-back. Rowen continues to deftly balance witty banter and dark events in a real page turner. I dearly love how sassy Rowen's heroines are and how they always rise to the occasion despite the odds being stacked against them.

★★★★☆ I loved it

I need to start off with saying, I can't believe that there may not be any more books to this series!! Please correct me if I'm wrong because I'll be so excited if I am. There is so much more left to explore in Nikki's world and I really, really don't want it to be over. It finished so open-ended, I want more now! Ok, time to calm down now. I hope I made my point clear. :D As you can probably tell by now I loved Reign Check. I may even dare to say that I liked it more More...

After finishing the first novel in the series, Reign or Shine, I've been really looking forward to reading this one. Picking up almost immediately after Reign or Shine ended, Reign Check was another exciting and well done addition to the series.

To begin with, readers got to know Nikki even better, and she really matured in this book. I could understand her actions more and she was an overall more believable and likable character. I like Nikki's personality and it makes her narration More...

Quick & Dirty Book Review:
The first book in this delightful series, Demon Princess: Reign or Shine was a light-hearted, hilarious novel with an intriguing storyline, compelling protagonist and a whole of demon butt-kicking action. In my opinion, Demon Princess: Reign Check surpassed its predecessor. With an exciting romantic triangle and profound writing dealing with deep issues of death, choices and the consequences of our actions, Reign Check has become my favorite book within the series. My Thoughts: I have been on such a kick of reading Young Adult books! And amazing ones at that! In the first book Demon Princess Reign or Shine. We meet Nikki Donovan who moved to a new town two months because her mom got remarried, for the fourth time! Her father left her and her mom before she was even born. She is just trying to fit it and becomes friends with the popular girl. She snags a super cute popular guy and her life can't get any better. Until, she gets herself a bit of a stalker and More...

this book was really awesome. it was good and instead of making me upset that i had ever picked it up, i ended up for excited for the next book. the one thing that was kinda annoying was nikki's ability to not see the things that were staring her right in the face. and it was very good with the fact that the love triangle didnt feel like something that was just there to keep us occupied. it was like a very important part of the book instead of just there to fill the pages. all in all very good. Then everyone starts telling her that she is the subject of a dire prophecy. So now she has to go before the Demon Council to make her case. Oh, and her mother is dating one of her teachers. Whew!

this one was just as good as the first. i didn't know how it was going to work out because i felt like the 1st book sorted most thing i guess apart from the forbidden love thing which i guess is a very strong factor of the book. the book was going great untill the ending. it was an ok ending if it had a 3rd book but it doesnt have one that i know of. the ending left many questions unanswered and makes me really wonder how everything works out. but i really loved the book.

The start of this book is really slow, as it takes its time to re-instate what occurred in the first book. Mid-book, all the characters appear to be connected somehow, although new traits of old characters are not defined too well.
The book then becomes a bit to clique. However, during the last few chapters of the book, a newer perspective comes into place and the concept of things become more exciting to read. However due to the lack of building upon new concepts, the book on my view isn More...

Nikki just got through with saving her father from being poisened, fighting her own aunt for her life, and realizing shes in big shit. Her best friend might be a demon slayer. The fairy realm king she met came to her school as a foriegn exchange student. All Nikki wants to do is have her normal life back but, thats not going to be happening anytime soon. Read this book it was great and is recommended.

Second in a great series about a Canadian high-schooler who, unbeknownst to her mother and friends, moonlights as the demon princess of the Shadowlands. I like these books because they're princess novels for girls who couldn't care less about the Disney princess image - this princess shops at the mall, dissects frogs in biology, and... sprouts wings and horns if she gets stressed out! Good for 13+.

The voice in this novel is great! She's funny, yet empathic, and down right snarky when she needs to be. I fell in love with this series when I read book one, Demon Princess: Reign or Shine, and found myself taken with Rhys back then. Micheal, the MC's love interest, is okay as far as literary boys are concerened, but Rhys is a total hottie. He's moody and a little mean, you know, everything that makes a great literary crush, and I totally root for him and Nikki to get together. Now, I won't spi More...
