I think I'm starting to enjoy reading Jane Costello's books more than I'd imagined I would. My Single Friend is my third for her, and I'm getting ready to pick up the next one as I write this.

My Single Friend is a chick-lit that contained all the right elements you would expect to find in such a book: it is funny (sometimes laugh-out-loud), it is romantic (in a cheesy sort of way), it is quirky (and cringe-worthy), it is light, witty, and just purely fun.

I’ve read and enjoyed Jane Costello’s first two novels, Bridesmaids & The Nearly-Weds, so it was obvious that when I heard about her third book My Single Friend I would be eager to read that too. I think her easy writing style is fantastic and it enables me to just whizz through her books with relative ease. So when My Single Friend appeared on my bed (courtesy of my mailbox) in the middle of March I couldn’t wait to begin reading it. After finishing my latest book, I knew My Single Friend was going to be my next read.

The focus of Jane Costello’s first two books were, in essence, weddings what with Bridesmaids about a girl who is constantly a bridesmaid and The Nearly-Weds being about a girl dumped at the altar so I was surprised that when I read the synopsis for My Single Friend that there appeared to be no weddings in sight! Now I’m not a huge fan of books where image is the main focus (Jemima J by Jane Green, for example), as is the case with My Single Friend, so I was interested and slightly wary of the fact that it only appeared that Lucy was attracted to Henry after his make-over. Of course that’s how it may first appear but that really isn’t the case at all. Jane Costello manages to balance the friendship between Lucy and Henry perfectly so, in all honesty, romance seems like the likely next step rather than it being all about Henry’s new image being the only reason Lucy suddenly sees him in a new light.

Another main focus of the book appears to be Lucy and her work life (as well as Lucy and her love life). There is a lot of time spent at the PR company where Lucy works and I quite enjoyed all of the witty banter shared by those who work at Peaman-Brown. Lucy’s job seems hectic at times and there were a few twists regarding her job as the book progressed. It’s fair to say that Lucy’s love life, the other main focus of the book, is fairly erratic. Because she embellishes details to all of her dates, she never really manages to hold down a relationship. I can’t say I compltely understand why Lucy felt the need to lie about things in a bid to look better because, as Henry said, she seemed perfectly fine the way she was. I suppose the only let down of the book wass Lucy’s “relationship” with optician Paul. I can’t say I particularly warmed to him at all and I found his lack of contact and ability to go AWOL very irritating.

Jane Costello has again managed to create some fantastic characters. I actually really loved Lucy (despite her name – chick lit authors, take note, I hate the name Lucy). She was fun and she would definitely be someone I would like to be friends with. Sure, she lied a little during dates but the results were actually pretty hilarious. I actually also loved Henry, even pre-make-over. He was just incredibly sweet and the relationship between himself and Lucy was immensely believeable and it was great to go back to their early days of knowing each other and to see just how long they had been friends. Lucy’s friends Erin and Dominique were also fairly nice and I loved how all three girls came together to help Henry when he asked for his make-over. Costello is definitely one of the best authors when it comes to creating a well-rounded set of characters.

The book, like Jane’s other two, is written entirely from the point of view of the main character. In this case it was Lucy and I really loved her narration – she was funny and cringe-worthy but ultimately she was immensely lovely. What Costello does best, though, is being able to inject her books with so much warmth and humour. As the book hurtled towards it’s conclusion I knew exactly how it would end and yet I still found myself smiling like a loon as I turned the last page. I absolutely loved the ending of My Single Friend and it reminded me of one of the endings of one of my favourite ever TV shows.

My Single Friend was just as enjoyable as Jane Costello’s previous novels and it goes without saying that I fully recommend this book. Jane Costello is a huge new talent in chick lit and long may she continue writing such fantastic books. Her books are so enjoyable and definitely have the re-read factor that lots of books lack. I look forward to Jane’s next book!(less)

I read this book when I was in the mood for a light romance novel and, well, I really liked it.
Lucy's a nice girl. She's attractive and smart but she's always insecure about how she is and feels the need to lie - or rather, exaggerate the extent of her limited abilities - to her dates, with the end result being that she never sees the date again.

I don’t usually read Chick-Lit. I have, in fact, read only two that I can think of. Romantic Comedies don’t usually engage my attention, but I was in the mood for something out of character, something light and relaxing. My Single Friend was good for this. It’s endearingly British with the type of humor I’ve come to adore, even though some of the Pop Culture references were lost on me, being raised this side of the pond. Lucy Tyler’s job at a PR firm is more successful than her love life, which isn’t saying much if you consider she gets more action out of her sleazy co-worker than the men she’s been going out with lately. To soothe her pathetic romantic life is her best friend since childhood, Henry Fox. If that name doesn’t stir the literary waters of foreshadowing, the impromptu makeover dubbed Project Henry will. After Lucy and her friends, Erin and Dominique, take it upon themselves to unleash the hidden Sex God within, Henry turns out to be quite the catch.

I think you know where this plot is going. It’s a little Bridget Jones’ Diary and a little My Best Friend’s Wedding, but ultimately a very funny, light, and endearing book that focuses more on developing Henry and Lucy’s backstory than it does Lucy’s increasing discomfort and jealousy. This is what saves the novel from being a bit too contrived and cliché. Jane Costello’s characters are blessedly flawed and faulty. The bumbling sweetness of her friends and the wickedly vileness of bad dates and coworkers can come off a little predictable, but play into the strengths and weaknesses of Lucy wonderfully. Costello’s ability to build up and execute some horrifyingly devastating and hilarious situations doesn’t hurt at all, though.

My Single Friend can be tortuous at times--we all want poor Lucy to See The Light. That she doesn’t immediately catch on is part of the charm. I had fun reading it, especially because it made me feel less weird about the relationship I, a 26-year old, have with my 27-year old brother that still resembles grade school-aged bickering. I don’t care if Lucy and Dave are fictitious, I feel validated.

By going into the characters’ history and by writing the most wonderfully natural, casual and easy friendship between Lucy and Henry, Jane Costello took the characters away from the cliche and wrote a fantastic, and more importantly believable, read that I devoured!

You could say that the book has two main strands; you have Henry and his makeover, and you have Lucy and her work life. The PR office that Lucy worked in was full of the banter and politics that anyone who has worked in that environment can relate to and I liked how the two strands of the novel interwined (as work and play inevitably do), but there was also a smaller plot line that I particularly enjoyed and I want have liked to have seen more of and that was Lucy’s relationship with her family. The brother and sister dynamic was superbly written and the squabbling was hilarious! Lucy’s parents were different from many of the other ‘parents’ I’ve read in other books. Her mother’s dry, quick wit and sarcasm, made her somewhat unconventional, and in turn, made her one of my favourite characters in the book.

Jane Costello is known for her humour, and My Single Friend doesn’t disappoint. I love how she sets up these fantastically cringeworthy moments! I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read it, but it’s a classic and you won’t know it’s happening until you’re screaming at the page in horror!

I think that with Jane’s third book, she’s really carving a niche for herself in romcom fiction. I loved reading My Single Friend and would definitely recommend it to fans of Sophie Kinsella and Wendy Holden.(less)

My Single Friend is one of those rare gems that make you feel warm all over and can't wait to re-read it.

I like chick lit as much as the next girl, and you can never go wrong with a good 'ol love story. Having said that, it has to be a helluva good book for me to gush over it. Shelves: fluffy-fun

An incredibly easy read with a fun, friendly writing style. I needed something light-hearted to read and got through it in a day. Had some funny moments and likeable characters but very very predictable.

Lucy is a likeable enough character although a bit cringey (in particular her behaviour on dates as she felt the need to lie so much)

Plot
Lucy and Henry have been best friends since school. They are now living together and both have terrible love lives, Lucy because she can't help but lie about her interest to her dates and she always seems to get caught out, and Henry because... well Henry needs all the help he can get which is where Project Henry comes into place.

Lucy and her girlfriends Erin and Dominique take on the challenge to transform Henry into a babe magnet by giving him a new look and giving him tips on flirting and chatting up women!

Will Henry and Lucy be able to find true love?

My opinion
Lucy is the main character in this book and I have to say her character was a breath of fresh air to read. I have read many warm loving characters recently and this is not the words I would use to describe our main character. Lucy is very down to earth, very much your average girl and she is a very believable character.

Henry is a very charming man if a little geeky. I loved his character from the moment we met him and I did feel sorry for him letting these women loose on him to give him a make over. I found the more I read the book the more I enjoy his character.

The thing which really stands out for me with this book is the humour. I found myself laughing out loud to this book. There was alot of humour throughout the book but it came out of the blue.

The story gets off to a quick start and stays on a fast pace all the way through the book. I could not put this book down it was a real page turner. I must admit the ending to the book I found was predictable but I do not feel that this ruined the book in anyway.

I would defiantly recommend this book it just ticks all the boxes. I will be on the look out for more Jane Costello books I just hope they are as good as this one. One thing I have learnt with this book is not to judge a book by its cover!!

One particular scene had me roaring with laughter, as I could absolutely see it happening in real life too. I think what is so funny about Lucy is that there is something recognisable in her. We’ve all wanted to make ourselves seem more interesting or talented at times, and we’ve probably also been caught out once or twice too, though granted there are probably few as extreme as Lucy! We know Lucy needs to just be happy and ok with just being her self and so she becomes immensely appealing.

I also really liked Henry (I wish I had a friend like him!) and enjoyed the relationship between the two. In particular I liked the frequent flashbacks to their childhood. This gave a real sense of depth and history between them and made their friendship all the more believable. It also gives us more of an insight, as to begin with, their adult relationship seems all one sided and the feeling is that Lucy may just be taking advantage of his good nature.

As well as these two fabulous main characters, there’s also a host of other minor characters that, despite playing a smaller role in the book, have their own little stories. Lucy’s mum really interested me. Rather than the slightly ridiculous and shallow middle class stereotype, often reserved for the role of main character’s mother in this genre, she’s down to earth, hard working and slightly resentful. I thought that even though she played a very small role in the book, she was solid and authentic. I really liked her, and could see beyond the huge chip on her shoulder.

My Single Friend isn’t the most original book out there. I knew before I even started how it was going to end, but the journey there is fun and with enough twists to make me wonder if I would be proved wrong after all. Jane Costello’s writing is easy, entertaining, funny and engaging. I thought the beginning was a little on the slow side, but after a few chapters the pace really picked up and the pages flew by. I was worried that Lucy’s interest in Henry’s appearance would make this really shallow, but the message I got from the book was more about not realisng what you have until it’s gone. It ticks every box for a great girly read and is ideal for by the poolside, lazy weekends or when you just want to read something fun and light. I’d certainly recommend it and will look out for more from Costello in the future.

Well written and rather fun, but I'm not a fan of the "seeing someone in a completely different light thanks to a make-over" concept. After many disappointments with recent other books I've anticipated reading (not by Jane Costello, just in general), I was surprised to find myself glued to this book!!

The story is pretty basic, and yes, has been done before, but to me that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The author managed to throw in some curves to your typical best-friend turned romance theme, and I loved it!

A more self-centred, self-absorbed girl I have never met. Lucy is the epitome of all the women who, because of their success in their chosen career, believe the world of themselves. Just think, the first thing she does in every single date is lie to the potential boyfriend. Review: I was given this book by a friend and told that I would really like it. You never know with that kind of book whether you are actually going to like it, or not, recommendations are difficult. I loved it. It was the first book I read by Jane Costello (and the only book I’d read by her for quite a while) and it was a very good start.

The next book of Jane Costello that I read and that I would reccomend to anybody with a sense of humour and looking for some light reading time:)
As usual, the characters in the book were just brilliant. Very likeable and real, like a neighbour from next door, with the same, not exaggerrated, problems that we usually have, i.e. of course love life, work problems... Lucy (why Lucy??? More of a 3 and a half. The book was good - I managed to finish it in a day, but I didn't think it was amazing. I did like the relationships between the main characters and the book was well written by Costello, but there is a bit of an obsession with Lucy's dieting, which is endearing at first but borders on annoying as the books progresses. The dialogue was excellent - punchy, funny and witty. I can't place it but I didn't love the book, just liked it greatly.

What a fantastic read, I read it in 2 nights just couldn't put it down!

Lucy lives with her best friend henry who have been friends since school! He wants to update his image so Lucy offers to help him with a make over but what she doesn't expect to happen is to fall in love with him... When she realises her feelings for him she's left it too late... Or has she?!

Another funny and lively one from Costello. Read it in one evening. I couldn't put it down come midnight! There was one particular scene that had me LOLing for over 20 seconds. Loved the family dynamic--the mother was particularly hilarious. The emotional angst towards the end kept me at the edge of my seat. Ah gawd the suspense was killlling meee!

Couldn't finish it. I couldn't bear the stupidity of the heroine. Ms. Costello tried to humor, but sometimes they were so dry I couldn't even smile. The heroine's narrative was also sometimes showed her airhead-ness. Out of 3 books of Ms. Costello I've read, I only finished 1 book. Seems her books were not my cup of tea.

I thought this book was top notch. I found it addictive instantly. It was the authors easy way of writing, good character building and excellent hooks. I thought the storyline was really well developed and it built up excellently. I loved the romance, and I liked the main character and the way that she spoke in the book.

Slightly naughty but the whole book reminds me of a normal woman on the look out for true love. And all of us who have that slightly nutty male friend may have experienced that attraction and not known what to do.

"My Single Friend" is a light and sweet read. While it was easy at times to predict what was going to happen next, there are still a few revelations that will throw you for a loop.

I liked and could relate to Lucy's character, even though I've never had such a close relationship for so long with a platonic male friend. Hats off to Jane Costello for writing about it in a way that made it easy for me to relate. I liked Lucy's friends Dominique and Erin and they played integral roles in the story....more

This book was quite enjoyable to read on holiday. It’s good when you want a light and fun read! The main themes of ‘My Single Friend’ are fun and romance! I would recommend it to anyone who likes young, light hearted reading!

I have loved all of her previous books and this was no exception.

I liked all of the characters, they were very well likeable and the things they say and do actually did have me laughing out loud in places...which when on a bus makes you look a bit silly but hey lol

Henry and Lucy are so obviously meant for each other, its a wonder it isnt obvious to them. And Lucy's best friends as the secondary characters were really good and quite relatable to women who are in the "dating" scene I think.
