When I read a book I don't enjoy, I have to read a couple books I know I'll love to get the bad taste of bad reading out of my head. It's usually a more recently discovered comfort read, but if it was a really bad book, I might feel compelled to reach deep into the past and draw out a very old favorite.
I read a very bad book the other day. This book is a very old favorite. I probably read it first when I was nine or ten, and it immediately became a much-read favorite(possibly just because it was...more

This was one of my favourite books as a kid - I was a huge dragon nut, to the point where I refused to read Harry Potter because of something I read in the back summary of the first book that lead me to assume JK Rowling was "doing it wrong," so I turned my nose up at the whole series. Seriously. I recall this vividly. Kids say the darndest things.
Anyway, the Dragon Chronicles series was one of my favourites for a variety of reasons - I loved that the dragons were intelligent, misunderstood crea...more

I made the mistake of believing this novel was entirely about getting milk from a dragon for a sick sister. The first 50 pages or so may have been about the main character babysitting dragons in exchange for milk, but dragon slayers and rude townsfolk soon changed the story. I hesitate to give more of the plot since the book is so short. So I will refrain from spoilers and give my thoughts instead. I think that Dragon's Milk is a decent children's story, but it is a bit sad. Most of the novel is...more
This book truly is magical. The characters, plot, everything.
The book starts off with a good and steady pace. Kaeldra (first of all, let me apologize if I spell her name wrong. It's a mouthful.) soon learns that her foster sister has grown terribly ill. She must set off on an adventure she never would have believed before.

Dragon's Milk is the first in the Dragon Chronicles series. I was recommended this book by the children's desk at the library and didn't know much about it.
This book has a bit of an older feel to it. Kaeldra, the main character, is different from the rest of her village. She has green eyes, like those rumored to be able to speak to dragons. Kaeldra's sister, Lyf, is ill, and the only thing that can cure her fever is dragon's milk. With the help of her Granmyr, she finds a dragon that has recentl...more

The name of this book is "Dragon's Milk" and it's by Susan Fletcher. This girl named Kaeldra finds out that she is a dragon-sayer who takes care of baby dragons and dragons because she has green eyes. Her sister gets sick and she needs to find some dragon's milk so she goes to a cave and asks the dragon for milk. Then the dragon wants something in return. I think it's a good book to read because it has mythological dragons in it and it has some action also. It Is exciting to try to figure out w...more
I'm rereading books that I remember reading as an adolescent. I remember loving this book. It was original and striking and very vivid and, at times, heartbreaking. What I've learned from rereading it is that I've gained discernment as I've gotten older. Either that, or I've just read more, I'm not sure which. Rereading it, I found the writing stilted and flat, the dialog cringe-worthy, and the character development sketchy at best, including that of the dragons.

Wow, I think it's been at least 15 years since I've last read this book. Back then, I had no idea it was going to be part of a series, but I remember loving it. So, now that the series is finished, I am going to read them all! I can't wait! This book is even better than I remember it, and even 15 years later I'm still a big fan of dragons. This book is great for both boys and girls, juveniles, tweens and teens; fantasy fans and dragon lovers. Action! Suspense! Adventure! Lots of walking summariz...more

I really enjoyed this book. Personally, I miss reading fantasy books with good old-fashioned dragons, elves and creatures of the like; paranormal romance is beginning to irk me, particularly vampire-themed novels. Anyway, I loved the book: it's one of those novels that feel real. I managed to escape the world for a while as I read about Kaeldra's adventures, and I appreciated the realism in the story (for example, the fact that her differentiating physical traits are not unnoticed). I can't wait...more

To begin with, this book is non-stop adventure with continuous twists & turns. At first, I thought it was going to be extremely predictable, but I was sure surprised. With one idea set in my mind, I was totally unprepared for everything to come.
I imagined the entire story happening between Kaeldra's home and the mountain. It made sense. But instead, Ms. Fletcher took me across a kingdom or 2. Even going far enough over the sea to cover tracks! This book kept me in a whirlwind that I hoped wo...more

I really enjoy fantasy stories. It helps me to escape from the ordinary world I live in. This story has the fantasy elements: dragons, magic, a journey, and a goal to reach.
It was not what I had hoped however.
The first thing about this book, is that the description is a little misleading. I thought it was going to be a journey where the main character, Kaeldra, tries to find the mother of these three draclings to get some of her milk to bring back to her dying sister. Well, that turned out to o...more

The praise for the series on the fourth book
I've heard that Susan Fletcher's dragon books are a cut above the average sword-and-sorcery stories written for children, and so I ordered them all on Amazon to give them a try, figuring that, if publishers had deemed them worth republishing two decades after their original publication, they must be something.
Unfortunately, this book didn't really impress me. While it was more imaginative than most fantasy I've read, it wasn't elegantly written, and overall it read like a run-of-the-mill childre...more

What drew me to this book was the fantastic cover with the dragons. Normally speaking a great cover = a great book. At least that was the case with all the great covers I came across. Till I started reading this one. The story isn’t even half as good as the cover is.
The first few pages weren’t that bad. The writer used short sentences and simple words. So, it should be no problem for me. Wrong! I’ve read English books for a couple of years now, so yo...more

For the most part, I enjoyed this book, mainly because it had baby dragons in it. They were cute, cuddly and adorable...not what you would expect from dragons. Even their names were cute--Embyr, Pyro and Synge. Of course, there were also the more deadly, dangerous adult dragons as well, who weren't nearly as sweet and cuddly! Ms. Fletcher's descriptions of them, however, were vivid and compelling.

So, I got this book from a Scholastic book fair at my job last year. Not because I had nothing to read, but because I can't say no to book sales.
So, the protagonist of the story, Kaeldra, is a n outside living with people who are not really her family but have taken her in. She wakes up one night, feeling as if something were wrong. She had her clothes on and was getting ready to scoot before the noise and the destruction woke everyone else up.

I'm gonna be honest - if you put a dragon in a book, I will read it. I've been known to stop everything because I found a book involving a dragon. I'm a sucker for dragons.
Maybe it's because I have yet to come across a badly written dragon. Even Eragon, for all the angst that comes with the main character, has kick ass dragons. If they're not kick ass, they're adorable. Hell, even really bad dragon movies have great dragon characters.
Dragon's Milk was no exception.

The book was all right. I liked some of the themes a lot, especially the way Kaeldra is torn between thinking of the dragons as mere beasts to be feared and as friends of an unusual sort. I liked the way she was an outsider and how she struggled to fit in.
Ultimately, however, the plot was very weak in places and asked for a lot more suspension of disbelief than I am fully willing to give. I think it would work a lot better for a younger audience as they aren't always as critical of what they re...more

I read this at least a dozen years ago. What I remember: there is a young girl (possibly adopted, but definitely less parentally favored) who tries to save her sick younger sister with doses of dragon's milk. To get the milk, she makes a bargain with a dragon. But after the mother dragon is killed, Kaeldra takes on the responsibility of the three baby dragons left behind. She and a would-be dragon slayer traverse a surprisingly well-thought-out fantasy world, trying to keep ahead of their enemie...more
Growing up i was really into reading, book after book, all of them were a blur one after the other. one day my sister who was in high school brought this one home, and i stole it out of her book bag reading it in less then a day. Of all the books i read growing up that simply were blurs, just pages that i barely remember, this is one of the few that really stood out, and though i havent read it in some 9 or 10 years, but i can still recall most of the book as if I had just read it last week
Great book really enjoyed. Lori loved it and has already read it twice. There are three book in this series. Dragon's Milk, The flight of the Kyn and the Sign of the dove. I think Dragon's milk is the best of the three. I also think you should read book two first, then one then three. The flight of the Kyn take place first. Then Dragon's Milk then Sign of the Dove. All the book can be read with out need to read any of the other which is nice. So if you only read one read Dragon's Milk.
After a terrible accident, Kaeldra is forced to adopt three dragon babies and look after them. She is forced to leave her home and embark on a quest to return the draclings with the rest of their kin. Danger lurks everywhere as dragons are considered widely no more than beasts that should be killed. Anyone that enjoys fantasy would love this book.
Dragon's Milk is a very special book to me, because it introduced me into the world of creature fantasy. I hope it becomes just as special to you.
This book combines elements of an almost folk-lore -ish tale with great storytelling and plot. I especially love how connected the girl is to the dragons, and gives them personalities.

Do you like dragons?
Do you like it when dragons aren't bad guys?
Do you like girls who save the day and, oh yeah Magic!
Well then, you should read this.
I read this in middle school and still make the monkey sound 'ooh ooh' whenever I run across it again. Fabulous fantasy read for any age despite the youth sticker.

This is a book for fantasy lovers. It focuses on Kaeldra, who discovers she has the ability to speak to dragons. She ends up going on a quest to save three baby dragons. This book is excellent. It has a brave female charater who on her quest discovers and learns to except herself. I recommend it to anyone.
This was the book that got me hooked on dragons. The author won the Young Readers' Choice award when I was in 4th grade and gave a presentation at my school about the research she did for the book. It's a great blend of different mythologies and includes some classic intrigue and coming-of-age storyline.
