Lucid Food arrives, already a present, gorgeous with scrolling artwork and vibrant images, wrapped and ready. I am enamored. Also, I am hungry. Thumbing past photography for Chickpea Cakes with a verdant green Cilantro-Jalapeno Sauce, Fall Fruit Focaccia succulent with apple wedges, Crispy Yuba Rolls that look toasty brown and crunchy, ready to dip, I confess to some absent-minded lip licking. On the second pass, I’m stuck on the Ash-e-reshteh, or Persian New Year’s Soup with Beans, Noodles and

Such a pretty book and with the perfect sentiments. At the same time, you can tell she's a caterer. The recipe selection is all over the place, like the random plates you would be served at a cocktail party. Little seems that substantial or something you would serve daily. Ana enjoyed the nutty banana shake yet she had to modify the recipe because it seemed watery and, oddly, the author tossed out the crushed nuts while Ana economically saved them to put on salads. I've tried about six or seven recipes so far, including roasted portobellos with mashed parsnips (amazing) and the granola (also amazing), and this book is becoming a kitchen favorite. With the exception of perhaps five recipes, everything is vegetarian, and there are lots of interesting sidebars containing sustainable food tips.
Random note: One of the recipes calls for dulse, and Shafia notes that it is an excellent substitute for bacon, such as in a BLT. Can't wait to try it!

After awhile a lot of cookbook recipes start to look the same. There are some interesting ones in Lucid Food that are also easy to make. Plus the cookbook is filled with delicious pictures.

Love her over-the-top eco sensibilities, but the ingredients are pretty impractical if you don't live in southern California or a city with abundant green markets.

i love this book! some of the specialty ingredients are not readily available everywhere, but the creative simplicity of many of the recipes is refreshing. we loved the granola, indonesian corn fritters, rhubarb spritzer & compote, and are eager to try the chickpea cakes. great companion to a CSA membership, with right-on local, seasonal recipes, perfect for what's in my weekly share box!
