OMG... I started this book at 1am this morning (couldn't sleep, and figured I'd read a chapter or two), and finished this book at 4am... All I can say is that it was one of the most amazing books I've ever read!!! I'd give it 10 stars if I could...

I wasn't sure what to think of this book, so only ordered book 1.. I'm bitterly regretting having to wait to find out what happens to Ellie and Rain (and all the other amazing characters)! I actually thought it would be a stand-alone novel......more

As an addendum to my review, I have to start off by saying that I have read the entire series and it IS utterly SENSATIONAL and EPIC!

This first book in the Tairen Soul series is pretty awesome... and it's only the beginning. It's a love story of EPIC proportions between a seemingly ordinary young woman and a Fey King.

I waited for this one to become available at the library for quite awhile. It was always checked out and that, coupled with the rather rave reviews I'd read, made me excited to get my hands on it. The cover is decidedly hokey, but I've come to regret bouts of cover-snobbery many a time before. So I resolved not to let it get to me this time. Besides. I finished the book and still can't wrap my mind around what the tairen actually look like. I finished the book and still can't wrap my mind around what the tairen actually look like. So the creature on the cover is as good a rendering as any, I'm sure.

Essentially, it is a Cinderella story. One in which the prince is actually a king. A massively overbearing, centuries old king at that. Rain Tairen Soul is well-known throughout the world as the man who almost destroyed it all when his beloved was killed. His rage was of such a magnitude that it nearly scorched the world. Thousands upon thousands died as a result. This all took place nigh unto a thousand years ago and Rain has spent the intervening years basically trying to hang onto his sanity and not give into his anger and sorrow. Enter Ellie--found on the side of the road as a child and taken in by a woodcarver and his wife. In a moment of utter terror, her soul cries out and Rain's hears it. He comes immediately to her rescue and the two of them attempt to make sense of what has happened to them. And what has happened is that they are soul mates. That's right. Rain has love thrust upon him centuries after he thought he was through with it for good. And Ellie has it swoop down upon her for the first time in her life. It's all very anguished and touching.

Except it's not.

I don't know if it's just that the story's been done before and in more compelling ways. Or if it's the he's older than Methuselah and she's a spring chicken ick factor. But it didn't do it for me. It's like the whole time the story was telling me, I am So Epic. Bask in my epicness! And Rain was storming around yelling at me, I am So Tortured. Revel in my anguish! Meanwhile, Ellie was tip-toeing around in his wake whispering, I am fragile but with a Core Of Steel. Underestimate me at your peril! But none of it felt real. It just felt like the veneer of epicness and torture and steel cores. There was also a string of women drugged and manipulated against their will which really rubbed me wrong. And did anyone else think Ellie should totally be with Bel? Or was that just me? Now the story certainly had its sweet moments. How could it not? At just over 400 pages, it never gets beyond the courtship stage of Rain and Ellie's relationship. But even then, I didn't feel like they got to know each other well. But I didn't feel like I knew them either so it wasn't that great a loss. I do have to say that this book (and series) is dearly beloved by many so, clearly, your mileage may (and probably will) vary. It may very well fly for you. But, for me, it never got its feet off the ground. (less)

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. I wasn't going to buy it. Everytime someone would recommend the Tairen Soul series, I would stare at the cover and shake my head. The cover of the book acted like a sort of repellant, a little comical and cheesy. Watch out Kenyon...Wilson's out writing you. For the life of me I have no idea why Wilson's second book didn't carry the title "USA Today or New York Times Bestseller" on it. I finished one book and immediately started the next one, not because I wanted to but because I simply couldn't help it.

I JUST HAVE NO WORDS AT ALL TO DESCRIBE HOW COMPLETELY THIS READ TRAPPED ME. Since I started this book I could not focus my attention in anything else because I just kept thinking about the series... what would happen next, how would the characters resolve such huge and emotional problems in their paths, and all sort of related questions.

This is really ONE COMPLEX SERIES, kinda like Lord of the rings, with a whole new reality invented out of nowhere. Nothing is as we know it, be ready for new lands, unknown species, unpredictable events and SO MUCH MORE. And don't worry ROMANCE lovers, I was one of you, I completely postponed this read for too long because I thought it would be too fantastical and with too much fiction in it and not enough romance... well, rest assure because the whole series follows a destined powerful couple, one which has a love so strong that will save everything ever created. And not in the cheesy 'love conquers all' way, but in a real and emotional way. **SIGH, I just know I will never, EVER, find a couple to obsess me as this one did.

PARANORMAL ROMANCE AND URBAN FANTASY fans: If you follow my reviews, you know how much series like Psy-Changelling, Fever, Night Huntress, Lord of the underworld, Demonica, Dark Hunters, Guild Hunters, Midnight breed and others like those obsess me. Well, this one was so much more to me than those... this one completely changed the way I felt about those genres. I'm gonna miss this series SO MUCH now that I'm done with it. And I know I will be rating very poorly my next reads because of it...

As I found myself lacking in words right now, I'll use my favorite quotes to show you all what I'm talking about:

"Your soul calls out. Mine answers, beloved."

"They stood there by the Velpin for many long, silent chimes, the woodcarver's daughter and the man who had once almost destroyed the world, the man whose face was now drawn in lines of mingled joy and anguish."

She blinked in surprise. Since the moment she had put her hand in his and he had pulled her into his arms, she felt as if he knew everything there was to know about her. It was surprising and disconcerting to realize that, in fact, they knew each other not at all."

The path is different for every truemated couple, and it is never a simple one. Both Rain and Ellysetta will be tested, as will the strength of their bond, and they must prove their worthiness before the bond can be complete.

This is not a sappy, quick nor cheesy romance. It is one which oversteps all limits, it is one that goes beyond all knowledge, a romance that will prove true and survive it all. And it might be a pre-destined and foreseen love, but it still has to go through many steps and prevail. I adored that, while it's clear they adore each other, there is nothing given for sure, not obvious ending.(less)

I’m going with 4.5 and that 5th star was flickering on and off but I went with on and will explain why.

First to the story. Rain is the Tarien Soul a powerful being who had once scorched the world after losing his beloved in a war against the Mage. A thousand years later the fate of the Tairen are in his hands as he tries to keep his race from becoming extinct. The Mage are becoming stronger and Rain is the only one that can feel the growing darkness. First to the story. Rain is the Tarien Soul a powerful being who had once scorched the world after losing his beloved in a war against the Mage. A thousand years later the fate of the Tairen are in his hands as he tries to keep his race from becoming extinct. The Mage are becoming stronger and Rain is the only one that can feel the growing darkness. He is drawn to Celieria to find a girl he saw in a vision. Ellie is a woodcarvers daughter and is Rain’s Truemate (soulmate) . Rain is initially called by Ellie although he doesn’t know why. When he realizes that she is his Truemate all hell breaks loose in his but even more so in Ellie’s world.

First off this story is not without its flaws but it is almost exactly what I was looking for, for quite some time. The story is more of a romance story with the world building filling in the void in a very cool way. Ellie is completely loveable and Rain and his men (Fey) are really interesting characters. As said before this is more of a YA romance except the heroine is 24 and the things that interrupt the love affair are more interesting than the mean kid in school is spreading rumors. There is politics involved but I even loved some of that. Mainly because the two main characters poke fun at it often. There are Fey, Tariens, Mage, and mortals and all of it described in a way that you don’t even realize that the world building is going on.

That was some of the good. Some parts of the middle got a little fluffy, not that it bothered me but I can see how it might bother some people. It also got a little repetitive and that part is what cost the half of star for me. Its also the reason I was soo torn between the 4 and 5. If you are thinking about this book DO NOT read spoiler.

The romance could have been steamier but I don’t read fantasy for the steamy love scenes. The mortals in this story seem to have a little too much power also, especially in one scene in particular. Although I can definitely see where much of that power came from it drove me a little crazy. I wanted someone to put a knife between the eyes of one of the snobs just to put an end to their cockiness!

I buddy read this with someone who wasn’t enjoying it as much as me and I think that might be another reason for my indecision. The reason I decided on the weak 5th star was because I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story. Never found myself skimming and I loved the world and the characters in it. Some of the stuff that went on was maddening but sometimes that can be a good thing.

In addition to this, the book takes place in a completely fictional imaginary world. One that has Mages and Elves (though they haven't shown themselves yet...more Is it romance? Is it Fantasy? Your answer is as good as mine! It's BOTH, I suppose. Rain is the Tairen Soul and this means that while he is a Fey, he is also able to transform himself into a Tairen. Now you're wondering what a Tairen is, right? Good question, ha. A Tairen is a winged flying panther like thingie that has glowing lavender eyes. In addition to this, the book takes place in a completely fictional imaginary world. One that has Mages and Elves (though they haven't shown themselves yet), and I'm sure other mythical creatures. So, all this says that the book is a Fantasy.

Except, enter Ellysetta. Right from the beginning you can tell that there is something more about her. She's not truly just a woodcutter's daughter, she's 'MORE'. This is all proven when she is discovered as Rain Tairen Soul's truemate. A truemate is the other part of a Fey Warrior's soul. See, these Fey warriors soul darkens for every death of an enemy, and a truemate is able to alleviate this burden and lighten the blight on their soul. Truemates are rare and most Fey men go their entire lives without finding theirs. And their Tairen Soul, their Kings, are destined to NEVER find theirs. Never in history has a Tairen Soul found a truemate... until Ellysetta's soul calls to Rain.

Okay, so wait! It's a romance then?! Nope, it's both. A very intricate world, with a very intricate history, language and story. And also a beautiful love story.

Did I like the book, definitely. I love love, lol. And I love Fantasy. So for me, this was a recipe for success. Did I connect to the characters like I have in other series, no. But this isn't going to prevent me from continuing to read. I know there's some pretty awesome things yet to come.

Everyone else has said it in their review, so I think it's worth mentioning again. WORST COVERS EVER! If I hadn't had so many GR friends who love this series I would absolutely never have picked it up. Along with Succubus Blues, that cover has to be the worst represenation of what's actually in the pages I've ever seen. For shame on that publishing company for choosing this cover. As most anyone who's read this book can tell you- GREAT entertaining read! If you, like me, are hooked on the you're-my-mate-and-don't-you-forget-it romantic reads, this one is for you too! Of course you have to be able to handle the paranormal/fantasy aspect, but I think even if you don't get into that, you'll like this well plotted tale.

Kızımızın gardiyanları ile diyaloglar bir alemdi. Çiftimizin bu kitapta evlenmelerini bekliyordum aslında ama yazar seriyi beş kitaplık yaptığından elinden geldiğince erteleyecek olayı gibi geliyor. Bunu böyle yaparken de okuru sıkmasından çekiniyorum bir de. Bunuda devamını okuyup göreceğim.

Kitap bir sürü bilinmeyenlerle dolu aslında. Bu Feyler beş elementi - Toprak, Ateş, Su, Hava ve Ruh - kullanabiliyorlar. İnsanlar üzerinde büyüler yapabiliyorlar. İstedikleri bir şeyi yaptırmak, unutturmak gibi. Görünmez olabiliyorlar. Ölümsüzler ama her öldürdükleri kişinin ruhu onunla beraber kalıyor ve içlerinde ki kötülük o Fey'i içten içe yiyor. Özellikle de ruh eşini bulamayanlar del'rahaisen - yazımı böyleydi sanırım, kitapta çok tuhaf isimler olduğunu söylemiştim değil mi? - tipine, yani karanlık tarafa geçiyorlar.

Bunun dışında her türlü yarayı Fey kadınları - bunların hepsi iyileştiricidir - iyileştirebiliyor. Tairen Ruhlarının - yani Rain gibilerin - ruh eşi olmuyor aslında. Konumuza gelirsek, Rain bir Fey - bunun tam bir çevirisini bulamadım. Peri desen değil ama ona yakın bir şey. - kralı. Adam kızın boğazını ısırıp izini bırakmıştır. Kız çok sinirlerek etrafa bir enerji yaymış ve bu şehrin yakınlarında ki asıl oğlanımıza bile ulaşmıştır. Oğlan bunun bir ruh eşinin çağrısı olduğunu biliyordur ama o kadar kısa sürmüştür ki yerini bulamaz.

Bu ısırık olayı insanların adetlerine göre sahiplenilmek için yapılan bir ritüeldir. Başına gelen kız evlenmezse o kişiyle, dillere düşer. Kız işin bu kısmından habersiz ama. I had been needing something different. And boy is LORD OF THE FADING LANDS different. I mean, in what world would you find the words “FLYING,” “SHIFTER,” “FEY,” and “CATS” used to describe one set of characters? Who are these people? Pure fantasy, incredible romance between the Fey King, Rain Tairen Soul, and a woodcarver's daughter, Ellysetta. For the past thousand years the Tairen Soul has been in the Fading Lands of the Fey, but new threats to both the Fey and the Tairen bring him back into the world in an attempt to save the dying races of Fey and Tairen. For the first time in all eternity a Tairen Soul finds a truemate, but he must win her heart and her soul for them to be bonded as mates. If that all sounds like a strange world and language, this is a book of fantasy, and I loved it. The Fey warriors are just brought to life with this author's writing and are fun and likeable, incredibly dangerous as well as loyal, beautiful, sexy, and each of Ellysetta's five guards has his own personality. There is, of course, evil in the form of Mage's who have been working for centuries to take over the world and destroy all who live there. There are also children in this story (Ellysetta's little sisters)and their part brings in a softness of the powerful and often intimidating Fey.

Rain is bigger than life, powerful, but haunted with the souls of those he has destroyed. Because he is both Fey and Tairen (think beautiful giant panther with wings and primitive emotions) and Fey (think beautiful man), he can instantly change from one to the other and they often war within him for control. He is violent, passionate, tender, loving...... Ellysetta is very complex and learns about herself as we learn about her. Haunted by nightmares and violent seizures from childhood she senses that she is not just a normal girl, but her adoptive parents have raised her to be obedience and loving. A lot of the book is her reaction to suddenly and literally out of the blue being claimed as the truemate of a legendary Fey King and how she deals with family, the Fey, and this new unwanted fame.

This book sizzles between Rain and Ellysetta through their required courtship. Great fantasy romance. I want the next three books!(less)

3.5 stars. I liked this book despite the fact that it is not my typical type of book, it is heavily romance and a destined to be mated theme. The world building is not incredibly strong (not a lot of descriptions of the powers and types of beings), but what is described is intriguing. It is a fantasy romance and the world is one that is divided between mages, Fay (not otherworldly creatures), and mortals. The hero is a Fay but also a Tairen Soul, which seems to mean he is an immortal shapeshifte...more 3.5 stars. The world building is not incredibly strong (not a lot of descriptions of the powers and types of beings), but what is described is intriguing. It is a fantasy romance and the world is one that is divided between mages, Fay (not otherworldly creatures), and mortals. The hero is a Fay but also a Tairen Soul, which seems to mean he is an immortal shapeshifter with incredible powers. There is political tension between the three groups and some intrigue going on. Another theme running through the story is that Rain was previously in love with another woman who has long since been murdered (1,000 years ago), he is still dealing with her loss, grieving her -- and Ellie understands this. It is intersting to see their relationship develop despite this fact. I loved the first half but felt the second half dragged a bit. There are also sections of the book about the bad guys (the mages and some greedy mortals), I couldn't get interested in those parts and just skimmed them -- but didn't feel like I missed anything. One of the reasons I coudln't get motivated to read about the bad guys, b/c well -- they were just bad -- and that is it. There doesn't appear to be a motivation, no bigger picture and no depth to the evil beings. Just sort of cookie cutter bad guys. There is frustrating tension between Rain's supposed sanity and his need for vengance against the bad guys and his belief that the bad guys are currently up to no good -- but the mortal leaders do not believe him b/c they question Rain's sanity and well, those bad guys sell good stuff to the mortals and they want to trade with them! This entire political intrigue and struggle just was not fleshed out enough. But what was so incredible about this book is the relationship betwen Ellie and Rain, their growing bond, the humor the share with each other -- all of it. I look forward to reading the next book. In the midst of the domestic and romantic drama, Rain feels that the Elder Mages are practicing their dark magic and again and thinks they plan to spread their darkness back into he human lands.

If I had to rely on the blurb on the back of this book to give me an idea what this story is about, I'd have been sorely disappointed. I actually picked up this book on two separate occasions and put it down before finally deciding to read it.

I am glad I did. While I had some problems with the book, overall I enjoyed the story and especially the characters. CL Wilson is a totally new author for me so I had no clue as to what I could expect from her, but her writing style is quite accessible and she knows how to create a scene and good readable moments in the course of her narrative.

I liked the Fey peoples. Her warrior caste, her healing caste and the other smallish details of the Fey life were well fleshed out and explained in a non teachy-preachy way. Given the incredible breadth of fantasy work out there, it can be very difficult to inject anything fresh into a fantasy built world. And while there is nothing in this book that breaks any new fantasy ground, Wilson does manage to create a depth to her characters and creations that make it feel fresh.

As mentioned above, I did have problems with the story. First and foremost is the pacing. The book takes place in what is probably a one-week span. And much of it is spent on pre-wedding preparations. There were points when I just wanted the story to move. I kept thinking 'get going already.' The book does not conclude in any way, which is understandable as this is supposed to be a trilogy or more(?), but I think even as a first book of a series there should be some areas of closure, a small skirmish won, anything that lets the book have some self containment. You should still be left with the feeling of a beginning-middle-end even as you are aware that the ultimate conclusion is still forthcoming. This book ends so abruptly with not even the smallest allusion to an ending.

Second, I am so over the big evil just for evil's sake. Dark Mages, Dark magic, Evil who is just doing evil...so what? Why are they doing what they are doing? Having just come off reading the fabulous Warlord trilogy by Jennifer Fallon where her villains have describable motivation, I wanted my next book of fantasy to have more of the same. Sadly, this book does not deliver that. The bad guys are running around creating havoc with no one except Rain the wiser, the humans are clueless, and Rain is making like Cassandra from Greek mythology -- he's warning everyone that the evil mages are back and doing terrible things but no one believes him.

Normally, I'd roll my eyes and give up on the book. But like I said, Wilson's writing is so accessible and she's created such good, deep characters and a plot that is quite good, that I can ignore these things. I just hope the upcoming books deliver on what the first book promises.(less)

Raised by strict but loving parents, Elly is fascinated by the tairen, and especially Rain Tairen Soul. An awkward, gawky, and unattractive child, Elly is finally coming into her own beauty. Because she is nearing her 25th birthday, her mother, in a genuine loving gesture, allows her to be betrothed to a man with the personality of a toad who only wants Elly so he can exploit her.

Our H and H meet and it is not love at first sight. Rain recognizes her as the woman shown to him by the Eye fo Tairen and forces himself into her life. Elly, while admiring him from afar, is afraid of him and his magic when he rescues her from a stampeding crowd. It’s a good romance, believable and heartwarming.

Most of the story is about Rain and Elly adjusting to the idea that they are destined to be together. Neither are inititally thrilled with the idea. Ms. Wilson moves the story slowly to allow the reader to get to know the nuances of the characters and to immerse ourselves into their world. She masterfully uses details to create a seamless and richly detailed story. The quality of her storytelling is absolutely rock solid.

I found the book to be magical, dramatic, romantic, tense, and thoroughly entertaining. It is everything I like in a book. My only complaint is that I wasn’t ready for it to end. The sequel, Lady of Light and Shadows, is set for release at the end of October. If the series does well, Bel, one of the secondary characters, will get his own story. I can hardly wait.

I really liked this book for some inexplicable reason, LOL. The main protagonist was really innocent, sometimes irritatingly so, but I was still held by the world and the romance and the characters. It's a very romance-heavy fantasy world, which you don't see a ton. Reminded me of the Black Jewels Trilogy by Anne Bishop, if you liked that (I certainly did) then you'll enjoy this.

I've just finished Tairen Soul #1. And how to rate it? I dunno, I'm divided between the 3.5 and the 4 stars! 3.5?

I think was inclined towards rating it 4 stars through most of the book, but in the second half it was clear to me that the book will be kind of introductory. Even though I tried to better prepared myself for that I couldn't help feeling a little bit disappointed by the end. I would have liked certain things to happen into this one but I'll have to wait patiently for the next one(s)....more

5 stars. I can't remember the last time I flew thru a book like this. Well, to be fair, I would if I could with OUTLANDER, but a 800-1500 pgs books are just a bit hard to fly thru. It's like reading Cinderella... on SPEED!

This book was amazing! I had read a few reviews of this one before I decided to buy it. Some of the descriptions were "spellbinding" and "hypnotic". At first, I thought it was just overly dramatic descriptions. After reading it I stand corrected. It really is all that and more.

I mostly read for a little escape, something to entertain and take my mind off reality and this book did it for me! I hadn't ever read fantasy romance before, but came across an excerpt from this book in the back of another book and it peaked my interest. I am so glad it did!!

While Wilson is building an interesting world and the imagery is pretty cool, this one can get a bit long-winded in magical description. There were bits of character and plot development that my suspension of disbelief just could not buy...and I'm theatre folk, we know suspension of disbelief.
