I'm not crazy about this or most of the Berenstain books, with a few exceptions, but it's not bad and my 4 yo likes it. Some people will have problems with the kids being encouraged to trick or treat on their own, but as a subscriber to the free-range kids philosophy, I particularly like that aspect. I felt the appearances being deceiving moral to be awkward and tacked on, but maybe that's because I wanted the story to be about the triumph the kids felt after their first trip out without parents...more
This is a book to get students ready for Halloween. Also it has aspects about fall in it. Students learn about the safety of trick or treating on Halloween.
This is a good book to lead into Halloween activities with the students such as pumpkin carving using geometric shapes, trick ot treating math centers with "candy", and dress up area (with important people from history) to prepare for halloween.

Slightly dated considering the cubs go trick-or-treating without an adult, but the book is very effective at conveying the message that appearances can be decieving. My three-year-old, who I thought might be too young for this book, seemed to understand the basic idea. I like how the book does not try to scare kids, but attempts to make kids more aware and cautious, to trust their instincts.
I have mixed reviews about this book. I loved the lesson/moral of the story: appearances can be deceiving, but didn't like that fact that the kids ventured out by themselves. Espeically on Halloween! Yikes! Granted this book was written twenty some years ago, but still I'd never let my kids trick-or-treat by themselves today.
Brother and Sister bear map out their locations for trick-or-treating Halloween night, the first year they'll be allowed out without Mama and Papa. One place they plan to avoid is Miz McGrizz's scary place, but when they end up there unexpectedly, she turns out to be a nice old lady who makes fantastic candy apples.
Brother and Sister Bear are going out to do some Trick or Treating and decide to avoid the creepy old house where the witch lives. However they soon discover that appearances can be deceptive and you should not believe everything that your friends tell you.
This is a fairly typical "Berenstain Bears" book, a cute story about the Bear family with a moral lesson woven throughout. This time the moral is "don't judge a book by its cover," or rather, as the book mentions, "appearances can be deceiving."
I haven't read this book in years, so instead of rating the "message" of this book, I based it on my memories of the book
. 20 years (ish) and I can still remember the pictures! It was one of the BB's I liked the best.

I thought this book was very enjoyable. I read this book to kids at Halloween party. I would recommend this book to other kids, because I love The Berenstain Bears books.
Just bought this for my kids this Halloween season, it was okay not one of my favorites but I do like the Berenstain Bears season overall/nice illustrations.
i wonder if kids are given apples and cookies for halloween anymore.

Cute Halloween story
Good cute book!!
Halloween classic!
as a kid....halloween was the best. we got this as a halloween present one year. seeing as how it wasn't christmas, or a birthday, getting a book for a holiday was a pretty good score....
I liked the lesson in this book, that is, everyone deserves a chance. We are all different, but sometimes when we get to know another person they are better than we expected.
Your usual BB adventure with a feel good moral. Not my favorite to read, but my boys like it.
Great series of books that teach little ones important lessons.
Mommy says: We love the Berenstain Bears.

Mikes earliest memory is of his parents studio in suburban Philadelphia. He remembers sitting on the floor scribbling on yellow typewriter paper with a big black pencil. His mother looked at the tangled hairball he had created, pointed out some random shape and said, "Look! Youve drawn a fish!" It did, indeed, look like a fish. That was his first drawing lesson. Hes been drawing ever sin...more
