The Fiery Cross (Outlander #5)
by
Diana Gabaldon (Goodreads Author)

I don't think any author is in love with her characters and her own writing as much as Diana Gabaldon. To the point that she is convinced that absolutely everything she writes about them has to be in her books. Who cares about the plot and moving things along and putting in your novels only events that would advance the plot? Not Diana!

So far, the weakest book in the series. This book dragged on and on and on... It took me about four times as long to finish this one as it did the other four. There was just a lot of unnecessary drama. The interesting parts were few and far between, but were just enough to keep me reading. And I will admit, by the end I was finally engaged enough to want to read the next one, so it didn't turn me off completely. There were just a lot of things that didn't need to be in the book. This is the firs...more

The Fiery Cross is the fifth book in a series written by Diana Gabaldon about Clare Fraser, who can travel through time by touching stones (think stonehenge). The first time she time travelled, it was an accident. She travelled two-hundred years backward to the 1740s and met the love her life, Jamie Frasier, a Scottish highlander. Their love story has developed through out each of the books as Gabaldon details the historical setting that surrounds them. In The Fiery Cross, the year is 1771 and t...more
This book starts off at The Gathering which is where all the Scots come together to see how everyone is and what's been going on. But that's only the tip of the iceberg of what all happens in these 1443 pages. The blurb makes you think that the book is a lot about the war but it's not.
Wow! There are so many major things that happen in this book and one extremely shocking event. I just couldn't believe that Diana Gabladon did that to Roger and while she set up things nicely, it was still incompr...more

In the fifth installment of the Outlander series, time-traveler Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and her eighteenth century husband, Jamie, have established their homestead on Fraser’s Ridge in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Grumblings among colonists against British tyranny have begun, and Jamie and Claire are resigned to the fact that the American Revolution will take place and there is nothing they can to do stop it. Although Jamie sympathizes with the colonists, his allegiance, for...more
I read this as soon as it came out. Had to have it in hardback because I couldn't wait for paperback and had to have my own precious copy. Wish I had waited or borrowed it from the library. I was so excited to see what Claire and Jamie were up to, but it was a very slow read, explaining every little thing in detail. I mean, I love to read books that don't gloss over the not-so-pretty parts of the day, but explaining that a child needs a diaper change, and it's unpleasant aroma, over and over and...more

Well, I finally finished The Fiery Cross.
*sigh*
I absolutely LOVE these books. This installment was no exception.....
I found that this installment had so many deep emotional scenes, that when i finished, I felt that i had connected to the characters, emotionally, more then ever before.
Starting with The Gathering, when Jamie calls his people out, and they all hold hands. The wedding scene between Roger and Brianna was both hilarious and touching. The various incidents at the Gathering really set...more

The Outlander series is definitely one of my most recommencded series of books. I might even love these books more than Harry Potter - and that's saying something.
The Outlander books are set in the 1700s. They start off in Scotland, but later travel to Paris, Jamaica and the American Colonies.
Claire and Jamie, the book's two main characters are fantastic. They're deep, smart and action-oriented, yet very real. As their relationship evolves over the series of books, it evolves realistically. They...more

Finally finished this book. This was book 5 and I just couldn't get connected to the story line. I have devoured the other 4 books in this incredible series and have completely accepted all of the many leaps of faith that DG asks of us as readers - but I just couldn't do it this time around. I felt like the first 24 hours of the novel lasted for nearly 150 pages. The Gathering - the event that ate up so much of the book - was boring in my opinion. I notice that DG likes to start books this way....more

This is a hard book to review. Besides the fact that it's over 1400 pages and took me over a month to read... it's Diana Gabaldon. She writes fascinating accounts of history, trivia, mythology, a great love story, science fiction and people with great detail.
In some places I wanted to hurry through the details and get to the heart of the story, and other places I savored every word. That's the beauty of her writing, you have to read every word, absorb every detail because it will come back (mayb...more

Well, I loved it. I have to gather my thoughts before I can write any kind of review.
*** So, I fell in love with Jamie and Claire all over again. This book gave me what Drums of Autumn did not, and that was many tender, passionate moments between them. As usual, JF had poetic and epic quotes that made me feel all warm, fuzzy and sad that I don't have a Jamie Fraser! I didn't find it boring at all. I enjoyed the slower pace, and reading about their life on Fraser's Ridge. I also enjoyed the mome...more

Having read this far into the series, I'm obviously a Diana Gabaldon fan. I could barely put the first four books down, and I stayed up late every single night reading reading reading, obsessively reading. I've been resisting all 979 pages of The Fiery Cross for several months now because I didn't think I could handle another bout of binge-reading, but it turns out to be a much slower-paced read. The plot meanders through the backcountry with detail-affected emphasis, of course, on Claire and Ja...more
Second Read through: August 6th, 2012:
Just as great, the second time around! Maybe even better! I feel a little more settled from this read-though, because I know the answers to some of my earlier questions
Claire never did find out who the man was that had been tickling and rubbing her feet at Jocasta/Duncan's wedding, but I am pretty sure that it was Wylie.
I'll be doing a reread of Breath of Snow and Ashes at some point this year. Since these books take so long to read and I am starting to fall...more

I really respect the research and what I believe to be the historical accuracy of these books. However, "The Fiery Cross" reads more like a series of short stories rather than one novel. My attention to the story waned in many places and I wanted to hurry and finish this book so that I could get to "A Breath of Snow and Ashes."
Jamie and Claire's story is still captivating. Roger and Brianna...well, I'm not sure why he goes through so much trouble. Brianna can pitch a fit faster than just about a...more

This was another solid entry in this series, though I think this is the first one I’ve read that hasn’t reduced me to a blubbering mess at one point or another. However, the lack of extreme emotion doesn’t take anything away from the story. It seems that life has fallen into a sort of routine (if anything in Jamie and Claire’s lives could ever be considered “routine”), with the specter of the Revolutionary War looming in the distance. The return of a beloved character at the end is a nice touch...more
This is the fifth book in the Outlander Series. 20 century time-traveling Claire and her 17th century Scottish husband, Jamie Fraser experience life in North Caroline in the years preceding the Revolutionary War. Their daughter Brianna and her husband Roger (also time-travelers) adjust to life on Fraser's Ridge as well along with their son Jemmy.

The is the 5th book in Jamie and Claire series.
It starts out at the "Gathering" where many of the Scots come together every year. We meet a lot of interesting characters, some that will play bigger parts in this book and the next.
Jamie is summoned to gather his men to fight the "Regulators", but Jamie knows he has to walk a fine line between the English rule/Regulators. He knows that war is coming and this time he will be on the winning side.

This one is definitely the slowest of her books, but the characters are so great that you don't mind too much. As with the others, I highly recommend the audiobook version - especially if you've already read her books and want to go back for a re-read. There's so much added to the books by the great narration.
Note - if you want to listen to this or any other Diana Gabaldon books, DO NOT get the abridged version. I listened to this unabridged - 48 CD's worth - but it is worth it! Davina Porter is...more

Oh, where to start..... I liked this book but not nearly as much as the others before it. I purchased the Ebook and the Audio book together. Sometimes I read, sometimes I listen and sometimes I listen while reading.
There are some really funny parts in this book. Brianna singing the Yogi Bear song.....hehehe
There are also mistakes in this book. Lots of them. Where is the proofreader? Claire is talking about the opal in one part towards the end. She tells us that an Indian woman gave her the opal...more

Crossing the boundaries of genre with its unrivalled storytelling, Diana Gabaldon’s new novel is a gift both to her millions of loyal fans and to the lucky readers who have yet to discover her.

Diana Gabaldon has to be without a doubt one of my most favourite authors! Her ability to tell a story, really tell it so that you are actually there alongside the characters is astounding, I actually feel exhausted after reading her stories because it feels as though I have lived a dozen lives and experiences in the space of an hour instead of sitting quietly and reading on the bus or in bed. Her characters and plot line are so lively and captivating that it is easy just to keep on reading stra...more
Diana Gabaldon has written and continues to write a time travel/historical romance/epic that is so well researched as to make it impossible to put down. I've read/listened to all the books, each one a tome, up through the most current, An Echo in the Bone, and I'm anxiously awaiting the next release.
Gabaldon says that the research requires that it take about three years for her to write a book in the series and have published. These days she has also spun off the "Lord John" series, set in the...more

Also published as CROSSTICH. I was scepticle as this story start - time travel is not a genre I enjoy. But it was so highly spoken about by a total stranger who didnt even know I was there that I had to give it a chance. And what a pay off. I wavered between 3 and 4 stars on this one, so I rounded up. The first couple hundred pages are pretty tedious. The book begins with Claire and Jamie waking up, and 39 pages in they finally have breakfast. Suddenly, for a while, the men use the pet name "hen" for the women.. But just for a while, then it stops. I wasn't really that into this one until about halfway through. I found that I read this book when I had time, whereas with the first ones, I MADE time to read them. There's just a lot o...more
