I was really looking forward to reading Payton Murray's story as he was a character that I enjoyed in Hannah Howell's previous novels about the Murrays. Kirstie MacLye seeks out Payton Murray to be aid her after her husband tries to drown her and she manages to survive. Her husband tries to drown her as she has discovered that he abuses small children and she has managed to save some of the children and sneak them out of his grasp. This I found difficult to stomach. Thankfully the author does no ...more
Not much saving grace in this one - didn't enjoy the back-burning plot about the molestation of small children. Such a topic, in my opinion, doesn't have much of a place in the historical romance genre. Maybe in passing, never as a means of bringing two characters together - it just doesn't sit right in light novels, such heavy topics.
Another great Murray Series book. Ms. Howell finally gives us Payton's story.

Payton is one of the most handsome men in Scotland and he loves the ladies. All the ladies. He doesn't take the innocent or what is not offered. He is an honorable man and defender of what's right. Knowing that Lady Krisie MacLye goes to him when she needs him to help her save small children from her vile husband molester and abuser of children.

The problem is that Kristie's husband knows she has to much information on h

Yea, finally Payton's story! Payton Murray has always been one of my favorite characters throughout the last couple books, so I was psyched to find out Highland Angel was his story! And although I enjoyed the story overall, enjoyed watching Payton and Kirstie fall in love, and thought Kirstie was the perfect match for Payton, I was taken aback by the prominant theme of child abuse, sexual abuse, and Roderick's character being a pedofile. I had read reviews of the book that had warned of the this ...more
Kirstie is married to a creepy pedophile serial killer. When she realizes this she starts helping the kiddies get away. Hubby figures out that she's the reason why he's not getting any, and he tries to drown her. So she somehow magically knows to show up beneath a window through which Payton Murray intends to approach his latest adulterous conquest. Kirstie asks for his help because, besides being renowned lover of married women, Payton has also somehow earned a reputation as Protector of the We ...more

Warning, though not noted on the back book cover or the electronic plot description/synopsis, the plot of Highland Angel involves child sexual abuse.

At the beginning of the book when I learned that the villain of the story, Sir Roderic MacIye, was a pedophile, I wasn't sure about continuing with the story. After all, this genre is typically for pleasurable, escapist reading; how could that still-present threat and vile evil be included? Keeping this part "spoiler-free", I can say that H
Maybe it was a mistake to jump right in and read begin with book 7. So, some of the disconnect could be my bad. However most of the blame I'm putting on the author because the book reads like a skipping DVD on fast forward. After five pages the hero is hot to trot for the heroine- normally not a bad thing but they are ogling each other while talking about the sexual abuse and murder of children and heroine's own physical and mental abuse. A plot like this can work but takes a subtle hand: you ne ...more

Another winner

Hannah Howell delivers another good read. I admit I was slow in reading her books. mea culpa. Now I am catching up. I love Scots. A few Vikings would be welcome. I can hardly wait for If He's Noble. And I get more of her past gems.

This book was given to me by a friend who loves the series. I had a hard time not setting it down and giving up on it during the first chapter. The writing is terrific, the characters are fabulous will powered individuals. The storyline is what I hated! If you have issues with children being abused this will be a hard read for you. In the end I made it through and picked up a humor filled lightweight book right away to change mindset. Again the writing is great and if her other books don't follo ...more
This is one of Howell's more disturbing tales. I was finally glad to have a story revolve around the dreamy Sir Payton. This was not was I was expecting at all. The characters were most interesting, but the background story was just too much for me I confess. Also, the fact that Kirstie could not get over that Payton would really like/love her because he was so good looking was begiing to drive me crazy. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this book due to the background story. It is not something ...more
Payton Murray was one of my favorite characters up to this point. I was excited to finally get to his story, and I just didn't get it. The abuse is awful, but also common during that time. The fact that there weren't much detail on how far that abuse went made it easier to read. I really enjoyed Kirstie's character. And even though he was a 'bonnie lad' who came across such men in his childhood, (but was never abused), and may feel a personal connection to the cause...I just don't think Payton w ...more
This is one of those mindless romances that I read and then think "Why did I keep reading it?" It isn't bad, it's just that Howell writes the same story over and over with different names and barely different situations. And yet...I keep reading them. It's like a weird compulsion. :P I know the heavy brogue in the dialogues bother some people but I don't mind it. :P This one was better than some of the others and I liked the characters, so I suppose I'd recommend it if you're in need of a mindle ...more
HIGHLAND ANGEL is an intense historical romance starring two courageous heroes and a vile villain, who is so malevolent he seems more devil than human. This leads to readers wondering why anyone in his clan leadership tolerated his behavior. Payton is kind of like an Errol Flynn character, swashbuckling whether he "battles" the ladies (married of course) or evil knaves. Kirstie is his perfect mate as she brings out the best in him. The abuse subplot is interwoven into a fine historical romantic ...more
Another episode in the fascinating Murray family saga. Payton is strikingly handsome and spends much time at court, where he doesn't have to work hard in the romance department. He is approached in a most unusual manner by a wee lady - soaking and dripping from an attempted drowning by her husband. She appeals to Payton's honor to assist her, and they eventually free her from the evil man she is married to. Funny and interesting, this series isn't the best ever, but reliably entertaining. This was the first book from Hannah Howell that I have read and I now have to go and get lots more. I loved it, but quite a heartbreaking topic. We had a well born but very evil man as the villian. For his wife and her champion to protect the children and find a way to stop him without starting a huge clan war is so hard in a time when people did not want to admit there were monsters like him. So lots of adventure ,very brave children and a beautiful love story. I'm off to find some more.
Payton Murray, the beautiful son of Nigel and Giselle, has a reputation as quite the ladies man. Women throw themselves at him all the time. But it is Payton's reputation w/ a sword and as a champion to the innocent that brings Kirstie MacIye to him in the middle of the night. Soaking wet, she claims her husband has just tried to murder her. She also reveals that he is a defiler of innocent children. Payton immediately takes up her cause and losing his heart along the way.
highland angel suprised me, not the usual story line of hannah's it was very well done still i think the ending needed more violence to aa certain individual *cough* "roderDICK" *cough*

im a bit obesessed with highland novels atm this set by hannah howel is not my usual set as i like a little bit more i am man hear my roar, as for this book he didnt let the girl run which is good good reading to you people if your reading this its a good book but so are the last ones :)
Glad the dark theme didn't put me off. It was a really great book and the story was very (so tempted to write verra!) well done. Loving this series!!
Payton Murray appears in many of the earlier Murray books. He's the good looking cousin that pops in and out. The author's website indicates the books can be read in any order, but this is one of the latest Murray books. I was looking forward to his story and here it is.

Payton and Kirstie raise orphans and the synopsis doesn't say this, but this book pertains to child abuse. I enjoyed the characters and this book.

Good read. Definitely enjoyed it.

I absolutely loved this book and the story was amazing. Even the bonniest have to fall sometimes. I truly appreciate the plot and the characters. Payton was the one character I have been waiting to bite the love bug and it was well worth the wait. I would recommend ten times over.
Subject matter is intense. It is the one thing that I always pray will be stamped immediately out of this world. Due to the subject matter I always stayed on the edge as to how much of the details would be revealed. HH did a superb job at being careful about the written word
This was my least favorite of Mrs.Howells works. The issue with child sexual abuse is a hard one to read. I have to say that thankfully it didn't go into details that would have made me ill. Overall I liked the characters it just wasn't my favorite work from Mrs.Howell.
I read all of Ms Howell's books Back to Back to Back.. while this is a fun series I seriously do not recommend anyone doing so. The plots tend to be repetitious and run together. If you want to enjoy the Murray Clan, take your time.. there is much to enjoy just one at a time.
I'm just getting annoyed with the same archtypes at
east this one didn't have a big beefy man but still the skinny small breasted tiny girl.... it's a wonder the murray men grow to even averageheightwith all these shirt womenthey marry
This the story of Payton Murray and Kirstie MacIye. She is fleeing her horrible husband and ask Payton to help. In the end she falls in love with Payton and vice versa... Payton is a sexy hot guy too.

I was surprised the villain in the story was a pedophile. I've never seen a story quite like this. The storyline was good and there was enough action. I am definitely ready for something lighter.

child sex abuse as a theme for a historical romance was kinda surprising, but good plot scenes are lots erotic and sensuous.

Overall, a fun read!
