When I was asked to join GoodReads by my sister, I told her I don't tend to read 'lofty' material, nor do I like to get a 'brain strain' while I'm reading for fun. So...

Smoke Screen isn't intellectually challenging. However, I have always loved Brown. (My favorite is still Chill Factor.)

This book has everything I enjoy reading - a murder, a mystery, a cast of characters, great protagonists and a little romance all wrapped together.

Smoke Screen was the best Sandra Brown book that I have read in quite some time. It is a terrific romantic suspense novel that focuses more on the suspense, but still manages to have a quite satisfying romance. The romance isn't given a lot of time in the book, but the hero and heroine spend most of the story in the company of one another, and there is plenty of tension and interaction between them. I found both the hero and heroine to be very likeable characters, although the actions of the her ...more

I enjoyed this slightly more than the first time I read it, 5 years ago, but I still feel it was too long. I read the e-book back then and this time I listened to the audio along with the book. It's a 14-hour plus audio which, IMO, could have been cut back to ten or eleven. When an 18-hour Karen Rose juggernaut doesn't feel as long, I know it does need trimming!

I wanted to re-read this because it was my SB comfort time of the month, because I needed
A very nice, fast paced suspense which had a couple of unexpected twists, especially near the end, to keep me on my toes. The romance part was nice, even though it took little space, and the hero wonderful. I'm glad I read it.

TV newswoman Britt Shelly wakes up in bed with heroic detective Jay Burgess. She doesn't remember going to bed with him and when she tries to awaken him, he's dead.
Britt got her first big break in a story of a fire at the Charleston P.D. and the heroic rescue that occurred there. Jay Burgess and three other city employees resued others to safety.
Firefighter Raley Gannon kidnaps Britt and tries to make her tell him what went on at his friend Jay's apartment but Britt can't remember anything. Then

"Smoke Screen" was an excellent read. Real page turner. Newswoman Britt Shelley woke up to find herself in bed with Charleston PD detective Jay Burgess, though she remembers nothing of how she got there or how he wound up dead. Burgess was one of four heroic city officials who risked their lives five years earlier leading others safely from a catastrophic fire. Raley Gannon, a lifelong friend of Burgess, was later assigned to investigate but never finished his inquiry because in one night his ca ...more

Jesu, never had a book pissed me of so much, and it’s not because it sucked, but because it was totally awesome. The characters are so vile I wanted to roast them over my fire pit of hatred. Sandra Brown has true talent when it comes to writing and it is no wonder I have been a fan of hers for over 12 years. I am talking reading them at the age of thirteen, I blame her books for creating my perve personality, high praise I tell ya.

So this book is clouded i

Another pretty good one from Sandra Brown, though I made the mistake of reading this too closely to the poorly done Standoff, which also featured a reporter and the man she (inadvertently?) harmed. There’s generally not a lot to be surprised about in these sorts of books — you know the male and female leads (Raley and Britt, in this case) are going to eventually join together both for their crusade and for their libidos — but I still enjoy the journey we’re taken on. Though I had some suspicions ...more

Unabridged audiobook - listened to approximately five years ago. Time for a relisten.

Narrated by the incredible Victor Slezak, I listened to Smoke Screen five years ago immediately after discovering Brown through Envy (also narrated by Slezak) - my now favorite romantic suspense. Nothing could compare to Envy so I graded it 4 stars. Removed from that impossible "search for another Envy", it is now a solid 5. Excellent story and suspense. Brown has a way of making you care even for some of the mo
This was an ok read.
I found the reason behind it all a bit weak and unoriginal, to be honest.
I also found that those FBI agents were way too smart, almost miracle men. They almost figured it out before the main characters did. I mean, really?
Then, it was the romance. Way too weak and unconvincing. I could have done without it.
All in all, this was alright. The story was decent and I sympathized with the characters but it didn't grab me. It felt more like a story waiting to become a Hollywood b

I enjoyed much of it, but toward the end I realized things were missing or weak.

Raley was an arson investigator. He was drugged and set up for something that caused him to lose his job. Five years later Britt, a TV news reporter, was drugged and framed for murder. Both events had something to do with Jay. Raley contacts Britt and together they try to figure out what’s going on, as hit men are after them.

I prefer discovering clues throughout the story to uncover the mystery. In this book, almost

My first Sandra Brown book ~ This romantic/suspense was easy to read and nice for light reading and a contemporary murder mystery. Will probably read more of her books.

When newswoman Britt Shelley wakes up to find herself in bed with Jay Burgess, a rising star detective in the Charleston PD, she remembers nothing of how she got there...or of how Jay wound up dead.

5 years ago a fire destroyed the Charleston Police Department. Jay was hailed a hero that day along with three other men.

I have heard that Sandra Brown can always be counted on for an excellent story. This book was no exception. I was engaged throughout. It's more suspense than romance which is a nice change. Smokecreen is a great title because everything seems normal but beneath the surface nobody is what they seems to be. Britt is on to a potential newsstory thanks to her friend Jay until she wakes up to find him dead besides her and not able to remember what happened. Her only ally is Raley a man she basically r ...more

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite suspense authors! She is phenomenal at weaving intricate storylines and unfold perfectly. She masterfully leads you along, never revealing enough so that you catch on to the who-dun-it but always giving you enough to keep you interested. I had no idea who the guilty party was in this story until just before they were revealed! Brown also throws in a bit of romance but it is usually fairly tame and is kept to a minimum.

I liked how the story hung together with the details and the development o the characters.
At times it was a little slow and directionless but needed the space to give the reader time to digest the flow.

I really liked reading this book, even though I wasn't suprised by the ending. If you like books by sandra Brown, you should give this one a try, for what it's worth, I enjoyed it and liked Britt and Raley's characters and story.

I'm not sure what to say about this book.

I didn't find it all that intriguing, to be honest. It's like, the main characters are always trying to make sure us readers realize how clever they are by constantly explaining what the whole plot consists of and how they got like 80% of the mystery solved right from the very beginning, leaving pretty much nothing to the imagination. The story takes a twist eventually (Somewhere close to the last 10 pages or so lol) but you could say the errors Raley and

I was literally so sucked in by this book I barely put it down. I spent so much continuous time reading this book, I had my better half making cheeky jibes at me about how he was concerned I was having a love affair with this book. It was just one of those stories that keep you hooked on every page. When I wasn't reading it, I was dying to get back to it. This is only the second Sandra Brown book I've read, but just as with the other one Low Pressure, it kept me guessing right up till near the v ...more

This book was quite a ride. The story telling was engaging.
The mystery kept me guessing and the suspense kept me in the edge of my seat.
I like how the main protagonists were flawed and I couldn't like them right away, made them more human. Slowly we learned why they acted like that, their reasoning and they past, we begin to understand. And they also learned by their mistakes.

Wow, I definitely did not see the killer coming at all. Usually I have an idea of who it could be but Sandra Brown did such a great job that I was way off. Again, the ending was not the best and it's the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars.
