Second in a series featuring Nora Gavin, who is called in with a museum team to examine a body found in a bog west of Dublin. The area is called Illaunafulla (Island of Blood) and it is on the shore of Loughnabrone (Lake of Sorrows). As it turns out, both are aptly named. As Nora's investigation is proceeding out at the bog site, a young archaeologist finds another body in another bog hole. Although the manner of death of both bodies is pretty much the same, the original bog body was about 500 y...more

Sequel to Haunted Ground, though I suppose it can stand alone. Helps to have read the first to get the interplay between characters though. Anyway, Dr. Nora Devlin is back. She hasn't left Ireland for home yet, and her sister's killer is about to marry someone new. But more urgent is the discover of a bog body (YES, BOG BODY!!!!) near Loughnabrone (the Lake of Sorrows of the title) by some peat cutters. Nora and some colleagues from the National Museum arrive to take charge of the excavation. Th...more

Lake of Sorrows, is Hart's 2nd novel with American pathologist Nora Gavin and Irish archaelogist Cormac Maguire. Lake of Sorrows once again takes the reader out to a mysterious peat bog where an ancient body has just been uncovered preserved. Dr. Gavin heads out to the bog to study the discovered body, and upon her arrival another body is found, this one from the 21st century. Thus the mystery begins....

recommends it for:
A mystery enthusiast with a thing for Ireland or a camper looking for an easy, eerie trip read
When I randomly snatched this book off of a library shelf at random, rushed by a whining two year old and my own hunger pangs, I had fairly low expectations. I was looking for a candy read, which for me is a good mystery. Lake of Sorrows fit the bill perfectly and was much better than expected. The entire story takes place in an isolated peat bog in an isolated county in Ireland. The book immediately pulls you into this sort of melancholy world where the local workers keep finding bodies bur...more

I listened to this rather than read it, and the narrator's lilting Irish accent really added to the atmosphere. And atmosphere is what stands out for me in this book. The landscapes, history, and complicated relationships that have grown up over time in a small community all evoke a rather gothic feeling, and the author paints the scenes well. I read a lot of mysteries, and mentally sort them into "fast food" - enjoyable, even addictive, but basically empty calories - and sit-down ...more

I enjoy Hart's archaeological mysteries because I always feel like I learn something about Irish history. Along the same lines as Hart's earlier book "Haunted Ground," a body is discovered in a bog in Ireland. Nora, a forensic detective, is working with a team of archaeologists to investigate the historical significance of the body when another body is discovered, this time with a wristwatch. Was it a ritual killing? Or is it a cover for something else?

A few months ago I read the first book in this series, featuring archaeologist Cormac Maguire and pathologist Nora Gavin, Haunted Ground. I really enjoyed that book. I loved the rich Irish history. The same can be said for the latest in the series, Lake of Sorrows. What I’m looking forward to most, is the third book in this series, False Mermaid. In this story, Nora returns home to Minnesota to re-open her sister’s unsolved murder.

Hart captures the soul of Irish life very well, but her mystery hinges rather heavily on the convenient overhearing of several key conversations. Sorry - I don't believe anyone's that lucky.

The audiobook version of this is very nicely done. The novel is rich in characters and Irish landscape. The relationships of the characters are well developed. Good plot and pacing.

Not quite as good as the first one, but still vivid & evocative. A good read for people who like Irish stuff. Or mysteries. Or anthropology. Or history.

Very good book. It's a sequel to Haunted Ground by the same author and is also an archaeological mystery combining modern and past murders.
