A litter of wolf pups is born deep in the wide Minnesota forest to King and Silver...Leader, Runner, Sniffer,Thinker, and Runt. Runt is as his name suggests... small, weak, and struggling to breath and survive. But, survive he does. His determination and spunkiness are the traits that provide for him, yet it is these same qualities that get into trouble and danger. He sets out time and time again to prove himself and to rid himself of his unworthy name. When Runt slowly starts to follow the path More...

I read this as a book club book with my 9 year old. Man, this is deep... I'm surprised that they let 3rd graders read this stuff... I was almost in tears.. maybe I think that 9 yr olds aren't as tough as they are. It is a sweet book that gets across the point that painfully paints growing up as 'different'. I wouldn't recommend it for kids under 9, but what do I know?

If you like realistic books about animals this story gives you a true glimpse into the harsh world of wild wolves where only the strongest survive. In a litter of five pups born one day, Runt is the smallest and has to struggle to compete with his siblings who shun him as soon as he is born.

This is a short book, easy to read, and in the end you'll feel you know a lot mo More...

2003- Boring, even for a book geared towards the younger set...Being stuck with a name like Runt is not exactly something anyone would be proud of, especially a young wolf. Runt has much to learn and makes many mistakes. You feel bad for the little guy, but I felt the book lacked details that could have enhanced it. I'm sure there are better animal stories out there.

Runt is a wolf who is the smalleist in the pack. the king (his fathor) thinks he is no longer liveing, so gave him this name. Because of Runt's size he can't do things like other wolf can do, once he is trying to help on hunnting, thporve he can survie. but, at last he goot lost. he is always trying to do things that to prove he can suvie, but things always going in the wrong way. But, Runt never gats up.

Runt is the youngest and smallest cub born into a wolf pack. Runt tells the story of how the wolf cub grows up, learns his place in the world, and earns a new name. A simple, sweet, and sometimes vivid portrayal of wolf life. The author includes some suggested readings for both children and adults. Recommended for grades 4 and up.

Exciting, informative, sad with a happy ending. I've always been fascinated by wolf culture and the fact that some level of communication exists within packs. Dane Bauer does an excellent job of bringing the factual into her fictional account of Runt's first year of life.

This book was a good book. it had a good tory line good discriptions and it really told the story. But, i would only rate this a 3-5 because it was a little young for me. I would recomend this for for Elementary schoolers.

This is a ok book about a liter of wolf pups. They are all good at some thing but one and at birth they call him runt. I'm not gone tell about the book just know runt isn't going to stay a runt. When he grows up he is gone to save the pack. King and Silver is the name of his parents and they give all the others name like Leader, Runner, Sniffer,Thinker, but he gets Runt out of all names. Runt is hellbent on making a contribute something to his pack, but is not mature enough to see danger loo More...

Beautiful, provocative, intense - and educational, with author's note and bibliography. Oh, and fun & exciting, too - probably good for reluctant readers up to age 14 or 15, or avid readers as young as 9.

I'm not much into animal perspective books, so I can't really say I enjoyed this book. It wasn't badly written, the plot was so-so. But nothing stunning. The only good thing was how quickly it read.

It was a cute book. I felt very sad because a lot of his brothers and sisters died. I also felt bad because his father didn't really pay attention to him.

Poorly written, wolf's perspective but lacking any major insight or depth, I kept waiting for a moral.
