Archer, the hero of this book-Archer- is one of my all time top heros. He gives up the h who he saw first and they fell in love with each other too,to his step brother who he didn` t realize how viscios he would become. He gets the h in spooky forign countries and then leaves her without shelter or food and miscarrying until Archer comes finding her and then he is so stuid he sends her off again with this dog to the South Pacific looking for ultra beautiful black pearls. Finally the guy -who got par...more

I was a little disappointed in this book. It could have been so much better. Let's start with the plot: A murder mystery, a fortune in stolen pearls, a deadly secret....all of these things should make the plot exciting. However, by the end of the book, they just don't seem that important anymore and I think it's because of the politics in the book. The book goes into detail on the pearl trade, including the countries that are major players. So much of the book is on the power struggle between th...more

Reread October 2012.
Upping the star rating. Archer Donovan is too awesome to not get five stars :D.

3 of those stars up there are for Archer alone. He is my favorite Donovan!

When her husband is murdered at their pearl growing operation, Hannah McGarry calls on her late husband's half-brother, Archer Donovan, for help.

This book confirms my suspicions that Lowell's earlier romantic-suspense books lean more toward romance than her later ones. (They're all formulaic. Just in different ways.) Archer is a very traditional alpha male, very much like all the other eldest brothers in these long family romance series always seem to be; the narrative actually does question the...more

This was my final Donovan book. Knowing Archer's story after reading about the rest of the family was a satisfying culmination to the series.

Dnf- I tried, but wasn't real impressed with this. Might try again later but moving on for now.

When I first picked Pearl Cove up, I was looking for for a straight-up action thriller and after the first few pages, I thought to myself "honey, this ain't your book!" This is an all on, full out, steamy bodice ripper masquerading as an action thriller. Need proof? Tom Clancy would never comment on his hero's "dark male beauty" or "the sensual promise of his mouth." That being said, the storyline is not bad, the characters are interesting, and the amount of research Lowell clearly did on the pe...more

I originally set this rating to two stars when I added it to my library, based on my memory of having read it when it first came out. I loved Archer in the other Donovan books and I liked Hannah but I didn't remember liking this book as much as I had liked the other books.

On the reread of the series, Pearl Cover ticks up a bit. I still don't love it as much as Jade Island, which is my favorite Elizabeth Lowell contemporary. I think Hannah is a great character and Archer is great, but he's writte...more

The third of Elizabeth Lowell's Donovan books, Pearl Cove, is perhaps one of the earliest Lowells that levels up a bit for me in general quality of plot and character development. It's still formulaic--I haven't met a Lowell suspense novel that isn't, even if it's a formula I happen to enjoy. But this one at least does a better job than others.

This time around we have the focus on Archer Donovan, the oldest of the Donovan brothers and the one who's generally in charge of everything the younger g...more

PEARL COVE - G
Lowell, Elizabeth - 3rd in Donovans series

Surrounded by potential enemies, Hannah McGarry faces the mystery of her husband's suspicious death, the prospect of bankruptcy ... and the disappearance of the fabulous Black Trinity necklace that was to be her financial security. Desperate, she calls Archer Donovan, a silent partner in Pearl Cove, her late husband's pearl farm venture. He might help her... if the price is right.

Archer Donovan would rather forget he'd ever heard of Pearl...more

This book has great characters a great plot, it flows, she has obviously done a lot of research on Amber, Jade and Pearls, but she kills it again, for the 3rd time because she repeats herself AGAIN on having the female in the love interest get all riled up, she can't be with the guy and then she ends up with the guy, we all know it's going to happen, move onto fresh stuff and stop repeating the same stuff in every book!!!

I couldn't put this one down; as far as romantic and mystery fiction goes this would be considered out dated having been written in the 90's, but Lowell writes a quick moving story with great male/female tension and info about the gem trade--this time it is pearls. Hesitating to read the final title in the series as it couldn't be as good as this one. Great for a beach read!

Pearl trade, travel through Australia, the Orient and Seattle, and the best literary description comparing Vegas & Hong Kong that had me laughing out loud. I enjoyed the adventure, the tension between characters and the strength of the Donovan family. Overall a good read with a little more depth than the average romance/mystery.

My favorite out of all of the Donovan books!

While she does give too much detail at times in this series that slow the reading down I do recommend this series to anyone who is a fan of romantic suspense. It was recommended to me and though it sat on my shelf for almost a year before I read it I am glad I did.

This should have been a good book -- the premise seemed very promising, and the previous Donovan books tempted us with Archer's formidable appeal. Sadly, the actuality did not live up to the anticipation. Indeed, it fell more than a little flat. Overall, this was a very mild, unsurprising story.

I was looking for a fast-paced mystery, something to keep me occupied on a plane flight. The story kept me interested; the author must have done extensive research on the pearl trade. This definitely made the story seem credible. But the romance part of the story read like a "Harlequin" novel.
Kat
been too long since I've read it to remember all the story-lines and which was my favorite but I remember really enjoying this series. the males are very alpha-male-heroes but the females aren't lightweights either. lots of family loyalty, mystery with just the right amount of romance.

This is an author that I have read a lot of and have added her books to my 'keeper' book shelf. Most I have read at least twice and some even more than that. Always in depth characters that anyone can identify with on some level.

Now I am on to 4th book in series. Are there 2 more I wonder for the other 2 Donovan siblings, Justin and Lawe? If so D.A. Hurd Library doesn't have them. :(
Sarah
Most interesting and compelling story of the quartet; I liked Archer and Hannah and their backstories made them much more believable.
Britt
Love the Donavan series. I have to say tho that all the men in the series have stolen my heart especially Archer and Walker
Terry
I didn't actually finish this book--it just wasn't keeping my attention. Interesting about how pearls are grown, though.

thought it was supposed to be more of a mystery... turned out to be a romance novel... could see the ending before I got there.
