I do not own this spiffy box set of Harry Potter books, but no way was I going to sit down and input all 6 of them!! When we were in the UK on our honeymoon in the spring of 2000, Harry Potter fever was just hitting its stride there. Not long after that the books found their way to Canada and I fell in love with this series right from the first book. Again (I'm a broken record) great characters and time-old literary themes, as well as just being a very enjoyable read. I haven't gone to see the m...more
I started reading these after 4 books were already out. Just wanted to see what my kids were reading. I was completely enthralled and ran to the library to "catch up". lol. Then my kids and I subsequently fought over the books as they came out. They had to go to school sometime and then I could read!! (I'm so evil...)I fell in love with the original and thought provoking ideas in regards to a parallel world w/magic. What kid hasn't wished they had a magic wand? An invisibility ...more
Since the first book was published in 1997, Harry Potter has become a cultural sensation. There are movies and merchandise based on the series, and gallons of ink have been spilled discussing their literary quality and cultural significance. Additionally, there has been an ongoing debate among Christians about the moral quality of the series. Advocates such as John Granger argue that the books provide a cosmic good-against-evil battle that is essentially Christian (a claim that Rowling may ha...more
Like many readers, I was one of those people who decided to read all of the Harry Potter Books at once, rather than endure the long waits between the release of each book. In fact, no sooner than I purchased Deathly Hallows, I went and ordered this set which include the paperback versions of books 1-6 (Book I: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Book II: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Book III: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Book IV: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, B...more
Read these back in 2006
Books 1 - 4:
We had been watching all our movies on DVD and it sparked my interest to read the books. I love seeing differences between movies and books. I started book 1 on a Tuesday and I finished book 4 on the following Monday in the wee hours of the morning. If that gives you any indication on the “oh my gosh these are so good I can’t put them down” meter.

The world of Harry Potter is filled with things that just don't add up, at some point this floating pile just starts degrading the creative merits and prevents any further enhancement of the reader's world perception.
I'm not talking about credibility, obviously, but the painfully failing synergy between the fantastic elements. The force that keeps together the discworld or the forgotten realms... is simply absent here. It's apparent that the base premises struggle to support the scale...more

OK...probably almost pointless to put a review of the Harry Potter books out here...but nonetheless.
If you haven't read these books yet, you should. I would say these are going to be one of the biggest pop culture icons of this part of the century. What Star Wars was to those of us growing up in the 80s - Harry Potter is to those growing up in the 2000s.

Harry potter is hero, he have a brain and self confident every thing that he done.I also go to the Movie for Harry Potter.
The entire Harry Potter series is extremely intense, with very interesting moments and filled with scenes that makes the reader want to know more about the books. These books had me hooked until the very end, from book 1-7, and I would read them again and again. Throughout the book Harry develops a strong relationship with his two friends, while he has to escape and fight the people trying to kill him. The book has humor, violence, drama, romance, and an extremely adventurous feeling. It extreme...more
I loved the whole series! I am re-reading some of them now. I've seen all the movies that are out and can't wait to see the next one! Latley I've been seeing that they are calling the first one the Philosopher's Stone. I wonder if that was the original original name and when someone told the press they heard Sorcerer's instead of Philosopher's. Personally I think that sorcerer's sounds better and makes more sense. Either that or someone is making fun of her. I wonder if J.K. Rowling has any more...more
Yes--I have read them all...multiple times (I have re-read the whole series everytime a new book came out). I can't help it. Harry Potter taps into some childhood desire for another world where magic is real and where good and evil are dealt with in metaphor and real adventure. These books are exactly what I was looking for as a child--and that child is still in here! They may be the most over-read, over-advertised, and over-discussed books of all time...but if you haven't read them I would ...more
Harry Potter is regarderd as one of the best and most influential pieces of fiction ever to be written. I have no choice but to agree. This series sparked my love for reading and fantasy, which I am every grateful for. A review of content and themes is completely unnecessary, as virtually the entire population of the United States of America is knowledgeable of that content. However, I will say one thing: if you do not read Harry Potter in your lifetime, then you have failed as a reader. I recom...more

After watching the movie of this book a few years ago, I decide to read the book to get an idea of some of the details the movie missed. The book is about a half wizard half human named Harry Potter who goes to a wizard school called Hogwarts. In the series, the books are about Harry trying to defend himself from an evil wizard named Voldemort. This book is about a competition that is going...more

I was first introduced to HP when I was working as a grade school tutor.1998-2000.
I came back from Winter break and every kid in one class had a HP COS book on his or her desk.
I thought it was a class read. Meaning that the class was required to read it.
HOW WRONG I WAS!It would touch BILLIONS world wide.
The biggest impact I felt that made that statement true was when I finally got my HALF BLOOD PRINCE, I had ordered 2 copies on line and avoided the store rush.

I cannot say enough good things about Harry Potter. I chose to review the boxed set as opposed to the individual books, and I actually own this boxed set, in addition to several editions and versions of all the books. I plan to get the British versions sometime in the near future.

What else is there to say? Along with millions of people, I love this 7-book series. Great storytelling to hold everyone's attention over the course of 7 books. Some sort of whimsical British quality that reminds me of Roald Dahl sometimes. Here's my attempt to recall my first impressions and thoughts on each book of the series.

Disappointment. "Hmmm… how can I make this longer? How can I stretch out a series that should of ended at two books into seven?" This is apparently what the author was thinking as she scratched down details of Harry and his spell-bound friends. Terrible. An utterly familiar form of writing; you can taste the unselfless tone of the authoring voice. More books, more money.
Long story short, too many books. A decent plot that was annihilated by it's vast literatural growth and stretch.

The most magical series ever. I hold them deart to my heart and have reread the series so many times I quite literally know them by heart. It's got everything you want in a book, romance, drama, action, fantasy and it questions your values. What makes the series to special for me is that JK Rowling sheer skills make it so easy to believe in the Magical World because it all seems so possible and real. PS; don't be put off by the first book, it is a little dull but it ends well!
I re-read these books to prepare for the final book... trying to find all the hidden clues. JK did an excellent job of bringing Harry into the reader's life. As I read the books, I felt very drawn to Harry and related to some of his plights-his anger with Dumbledore (my daughter refuses to re-read book 5 due to Dumbledore's demeanor toward Harry) and his determination. Perhaps a bit passive aggressive in some instances, but for the most part very outspoken and stubborn. I truly enjoyed these boo...more
Thanks to Sarah I now know what all the hype is about. I too understand Harry's struggles, his joys, his fears, his fits of courage and his moments of angst. What I still don't get is who the hell cares? But I would like some credit for giving this a second shot (1st attempt only got me about 1/8 of the way through the audio version, 2nd attempt got me through, what... like 6 books? - true it was only being condensed and re-told for the purposes of understanding the movie but still I feel as tho...more
I loved the Harry Potter series, probably even more than the books. I love how parts of the story from one book play into parts of another book (sometimes confusing, but Rowling usually does a good job of dropping hints on both ends). I didn't like the third book until I read the fourth and fifth books. To really enjoy them, you have to read them all. Very satisfying ending, I thought. Made me want more.
These books are the original british publications, and i would recommend that everyone read these. There are slight differences in dialect and lingo (they "Americanized" the versions you buy stateside); i think these make a huge difference in your reading experience. for one, it is actually how J.K. Rowling wrote the books...for another, it's more realistic British English. So if there is any way for you to get your hands on these versions, i say go for it!

What started as a joke (I bought the first Harry Potter when my husband, Pascal, my main reading buddy, said he was getting old for the first time on his birthday a few years back), became a passion in my household. We both loved the series so much that we spent time coaxing whoever read the book first to keep on reading so that the other could get a hold of the book. We eventually came to wait for each release, pre-ordering each new book etc... Will we be seen at the future Harry Potter Convent...more
So I was going to rate each of the books separately, but I realized I can't really separate them b/c they are just sections of a larger story, and sometimes you don't even realize what was important from an earlier one until you've read later ones, so rating the box set allows me to avoid trying to distinguish between the books. I love Harry Potter!
Love this series!!! JK Rowling really knows how to create characters that are relate-able and a world that is fantastic but still somehow believable. My favorite book was The Goblet of Fire, probably because we start to see that the whole Harry Potter world is bigger than just Hogwarts and that the storyline is starting to get much more serious.
Phoebe: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the best one from books 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. My mom and I just finished it today. Professor Umbridge is the meanest, worst character. And the Weasley twins get to be the funniest ever and they really get her back good. The Department of Mysteries is kind of scary because that's where they study things like brains and thoughts and death and love and time and if you touch any single thing something really weird can happen to you.

Starting from light and fantastical to (over time/books) more dark and serious, this series captivates with its depth of characters and the polarity of dark and light figures. Skip the movies, and read the good stuff: besides it doesn't need to fit in a 2.5 hour time slot, it can be savored over time.

Rereading all the books consecutively, in preparation for the release of The Deathly Hallows, has been more fun than I anticipated. I loved the books the first time I read each, again much more than I anticipated, but getting to read the series from start to it's (current) finish was as much investigative as reading The DaVinci Code. All the connections that I missed the first time around! And I'm sure there are more that I missed in the second go, too. The series leaves room for so many pos...more
J.k. Rowling did an absoultely amazing job with depicting the actions of these characters that are unworldly. I would catch my self makinf=g the same faces and hand movemts as the characters. There was not a slow part in a single book, i was constantly thinking about what was to come.
I <3 Harry Potter but for this edition it has to be 4 stars because a/) it's paperback and b} it has only the first six books... actually mainly because its paperback I hate paperback those books always die when I read them T.T
Although i do have the whole chest set of Harry Potter in Hardcover :]
