I really enjoyed this sixth installment in Lara Adrian’s awesome Midnight Breed series, but found myself feeling a little confused at first because it’s been a while since I’ve read the previous books and there is an ongoing story arc that’s central to the story.

I really enjoyed this sixth installment in Lara Adrian’s awesome Midnight Breed series, but found myself feeling a little confused at first because it’s been a while since I’ve read the previous books and there is an ongoing story arc that’s central to the story.

For those of you who haven’t yet read this series, there are similarities often drawn with J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood and Ward herself gives an author endorsement, but Adrian’s take on the origins and life of vampires and Breed Warriors has some unique and creative aspects to it as well. The vampire ‘Breed’ race originates from otherworldly beings that landed on Earth and over time found certain human females, referred to as Breedmates, with the proper genetic make-up to breed and produce offspring. The original alien vampires, Ancients, were too feral and volatile and subsequently taken out by their first generation vampire offspring, Gen Ones. There is a class of Breed Warriors led by Gen One vampire Lucan, known as The Order, who now fight to protect the Breed race and humanity from bad vampires, Rogues, who have been lost to bloodlust and their Minions, humans who are controlled by the Rogues, and to keep their existence secret from humankind. Of course, there is a continuing, evolving plot throughout the books involving the evil Breed mastermind Dragos’s attempt to bring down The Order and rule the world.

Ashes of Midnight picks up a few weeks after the events of Veil of Midnight and focuses on Andreas Reichen’s quest for vengeance against Dragos and his power hungry subordinate Wilhelm Roth, even if it means using his former lover Claire, who is now bloodmated to Roth, in his violent pursuit of his archenemy. Andreas has been an intriguing side character in the previous books, and I’ve looked forward to his story and it didn’t disappoint. His special Breed ability is pyrokinesis and the whole ‘Phoenix rising from the ashes of hell’ to inflect retribution element adds a thrilling edge to the plot and lots of fiery, intense action. The romance between Andreas and Claire is scorching hot, and their love against all odds relationship is really emotional and moving.

This is another electrifying read in an extraordinary vampire paranormal romance series! I’m looking forward to Kade’s story in the next installment, Shades of Midnight, slated for release at the end of December’09! 4 ½-5 stars!(less)

Another wonderful instalment in the Breed series, and I don’t know, I am liking them way better now. I find it that the series is starting to shine on its own now. Andreas Reichen, he was a constant character through previous books and he finally got his own book. His life is met with a harsh reality, when one of his closest friends is used in the destruction of his family. This is the horrific conclusion, to a case that Andreas was helping the Breed with, and somehow they found out and decided to punish him in the cruellest of ways. Andreas knows who is behind the murder of his family and he is hell bent on revenge even if it means the end of him. He begins his slaughter by tapping into his breed power, which is fire and turning those involved in the murder to a bloody crisp. When everyone presumes you dead, why not go on a killing spree.

Clair Roth aka bitch face is the love of Andreas life, not deserved I tell you. She is married to his enemy and the vampire behind the murder of his family. She doubts him through out the book, and at times seemed to be purely thinking about herself. She does realize the truth, and that she has been married to a madman for over thirty plus years. Yet for all that time she has loved Andreas and now, even though the circumstances suck, destiny has brought them together again.

Andreas and Clair are caught in a war with the breed warriors, and they might not come out alive. Something sinister is developing in the vampire race, something that doesn’t bode well for the vampires everywhere. Through out all this, Andreas fights to hold on to his very soul, and the first signs of bloodlust. With each fire ball he fires the closer it pulls him to destruction.

I really liked this book, a little slow in the beginning but it picks up speed in no time. I love when you get to see all the old characters, and they play a significant role in this book. Tegan comes out to play, and man oh man I wanna play with him. I can say that Adrian is the only author I have seen write characters of different race in a PNR. Clair from what I gather is mixed with black and white, plus Brock is a black vampire, can’t tell the last time I have come across that. That alone is one of the reasons why this series shines. The characters are diverse, the plot is thick with action and curves, and the sex is explosive, the blood sharing is just…… feckin hot. This book was a hit, and I am dying to get a piece of Hunter, he needs his own book and fast. I wanna eat him, a freaking wicked read.

Okay I'm not sure why this entry into Adrian's Midnight Breeds series got such bad press- I think this one is one of my favorites!

AOM not only had the typical thrilling suspense we've come to expect in Adrian's popular pnr series, but also some uber romantic elements, I find myself helpless to resist.

Really enjoyed the story but even after reading it a second time i still don't like Claire. Her logic just doesn't add up to someone who claims to love a person so fiercely. The fact that it took her so long to realize for sure who was the real villain just made me want to slap her a bit.

Claire e Andreas são dois anfitriões que vão receber de forma explosiva, literalmente, quem se atrever a ler a história deles. His fiery gift of pyrokinesis acts as a great representation of the anger he is experiencing within. Both dangerous and uncontrollable, Andreas must learn to control his temper and his gift.

To be honest, I found it a little difficult to get use the transformation that Andreas makes from the other books to Ashes of Midnight. In the previous books, he is the posterboy for the devil-may- cry attitude. But all of that changes dramatically once he becomes the last living person in his line. His rage and need for vengeance is understandable, but to lose that care-free mind-set that he’s known for seems like such as waste. However, it’s great to see Andreas’ passion once in awhile.

His Breedmate Claire Roth is the perfect match for him. As former paramours, Claire and Andreas share a past that complicates matters greatly. Now that Claire is Roth’s mate, Andreas must fight his attraction to Claire since her blood can betray his presence to Roth. Though Claire has a pretty interesting talent, she doesn’t use her gift to really help anyone. Yes, she tries but all her efforts are epic failures. I didn’t identify with Claire like the other Breedmates. When she used her gift to visit Roth the first time to warn him, I had already written her off. I just couldn’t relate to her. She just seemed so naive and lost.

The romance between Claire and Andreas was a rollercoaster ride. One moment they are cold as ice to one another and in the next moment, they get all hot and heavy. There is no doubt that their relationship is the most complicated and strained of all the others. But I would have liked to see them fall in love for the first time. I felt like half their story was already told by the time Claire and Andreas meet again in Ashes of Midnight.

On another note, we get to see what happens back at the compound in Boston. One of my favourite things about this series is that we continue to see the other characters in each book. The situation with Dragos continues to be a pain in the Order’s behind, but I’m not complaining. Adrian does a remarkable job with integrating the warriors and their Breedmates into the storyline long after their stories are told. I just loved how Renata , Dylan and Claire got to go out during the daytime and do some investigating!

Even if the romance in Ashes of Midnight is a little too hot-and-cold for me, the action that takes place is amazing! Adrian is so skilled in writing her violent action scenes. It kind of makes up for the mediocre romance.

This book begins in medias res of Andreas' brutal quest for vengeance. Andreas has the gift of summoning fire, and he uses it to devastating effect against his enemies. It's only a matter of time when his former love, Claire, ends up in his path. She's the breedmate (term for a wife/life-partner in the vampire world) to his enemy, and has been for thirty years. He left her because of his problem with the uncontrollable fire that wells from deep within him, and when he returned, she was married to Roth. Since then, he's stayed away, and lived the life of a playboy and leader of his Darkhaven in Berlin. But all that was taken away from him by Roth.

Andreas is a man driven by vengeance. The only thing that penetrates this thirst is the love he felt for Claire, which never faded. It puts him in an impossible position, because he won't give up his determination to kill Roth, even if Claire begs him to. Although I didn't always agree with the choices that Andreas made, I could see why he made them. That gave me a level of understanding for his actions. He was truly in a bad place. His gift of firestarting had unwittingly caused him to do something that haunted him with guilt, and he knew that every time he summoned fire, his ability to control this devastating force lessened, and his bloodlust got stronger. Even though he was murdering his enemies in a very brutal fashion, at heart, I could see that he was a good man. He'd just been driven over the edge by his enemy's actions. And he harbored no illusions that his own choices would lead to his own demise. His goal was to destroy Roth, even at the cost of his own life.

I actually ended up liking Claire quite a bit. Marrying Roth was a bad decision on her part, but with Andreas gone and her all alone in the world, she clung to Roth as her only security. She paid dearly for that, trapped in an loveless marriage for thirty years. When Andreas turns up again, she is faced with the horrible conflict of being between the man she loves and the man she owes her loyalty to. Although I thought she was a bit too trusting of Roth initially, I could see why. Claire was a very honorable, loyal person. She made vows and she wanted to keep them. Too bad she made them to the wrong man. That was clear, because she felt the same intense love for Andreas she had felt so many years before, even though he comes back into her life as a violent, enraged, and dangerous man. She's a gentle, but strong person. Her loyalty and steadfast love is the only thing that has the power to save Andreas.

The adventure in this story was really good. I loved the concept of Andreas having the gift of fire. It was very cool and cinematic. And kind of intimidating. He was literally so hot, he could incinerate anything that came near him. He could summon fireballs and make things explode. Very cool. I also liked that his gift had a cost to him. It was getting out of control, and it summoned an insatiable lust for blood. The conflict built to a very good climax, and I was very satisfied with the resolution (which has not been the case with most of the other books).

I thought the love between Andreas and Claire was very apparent. This book was also pretty steamy. Although I don't like adultery in books (to me Claire was married in every sense of the word, even though vampire marriage is different), I felt that they were in a tough situation, and Roth had manipulated both of them, giving them little choices in the matter. I didn't like the idea of Claire being blood-bonded to another man when I heard about this book, but I think Ms. Adrian handled it pretty well. It was clear that Andreas and Claire belonged together, and their bond was a much more powerful one than the bond with Roth.

Ashes of Midnight turned out to be my favorite in this series so far. I think that everything was pretty well done, and Ms. Adrian took one of my least favorite concepts (reunited lovers) and made a very good read with it. She has a good feel for mood and tone. Her writing is clear and strong, telling a fast-moving, interesting story in this book. I felt the urgency of the situation that the Order faces. The threat of the crooked politicians in the Enforcement Agency and the nefarious plans of Dragos. Things are culminating to a very dangerous confrontation with each book. I realized that I don't like all the foul language in this series, but I try to overlook it. I think that it ties into the dark, gritty vibe that Ms. Adrian is going for (even if it causes me more than a few winces when I read). This series just gets better and better in its execution. She tied everything together from the past books very well. It was good to see all the Breed warriors and their mates. I love how Renata fights with the men. She rocks! I think Ms. Adrian does a good job of integrating and involving the breedmates into the work of the Order, making them more than just chess pieces after their book is over. I respect her for that. I am excited to see where things go with the storyline. I look forward to reading Kade, Brock, Chase, and Hunter's stories.

I'm sorry for spoilers, but I have to do it. There were so many problems with this book, it's hard to even outline them all. I only give it two stars because it's part of a series that has some really good stuff. Otherwise it might even have been a DNF.

I had a hard time remembering the history of the characters in this series (and considering I've read them all at some point isn't good) so I had to rate this as a stand alone novel.

The problem with this series and others like it is that they all kind of run together, especially if you read them from the beginning and have to wait for each new release in the series. First of all, let me start by saying that Dream-walking is my favorite supernatural ability. Seriously, if I had to pick one, that would be it.

That being said, this book bored me to tears. I didn't care for either of the main characters and even through fireballs were being thrown all over the place, I couldn't keep my eyes open long enough to read about it.

The story of Andreas Reichen and Claire Roth is my favorite so far.
Not only the romance part, but the whole story around it. Waw, what a story !
Especially near the end it was very emotional.

Andreas Reichen is on a path of revenge, searching for Wilhelm Roth. Roth is the one who send a death squad to Reichen's Darkhaven and killed every last one of his kin, even the children. And Roth turned poor Helene into a minion.

Perché dico così? Perché a parte il senso di distacco generale che ho provato per lui e per lei fin dalle prime apparizioni, la storia in sé si scollega parecchio dagli altri romanzi e dai loro personaggi. Certo, il collegamento con Dragos e con l'antico c'è sempre ma è sottomesso alla storia personale di Andreas e di Claire. L'unico motivo per cui si parla del cattivo della serie è che è il datore di lavoro del compagno di Claire, ma per il resto siamo ad un punto morto - o quasi. Certo, la Adrian ha voluto dare un colpo di vita alla fine però non basta a togliere il senso di lontananza.
Tutto il romanzo è fondato sulla vendetta personale di Reichen: il passato, presente e futuro sono uniti da un unico scopo, cioè rivendicare la strage del suo rifugio oscuro. Quello che spunta fuori, però, è che Reichen si deve vendicare anche per l'occasione perduta con Claire. Eh si, perché i due piccioncini erano tanto innamorati ma poi lui è fuggito perché ha scoperto di avere un potere distruttivo. Andreas può, infatti, creare il fuoco, diventando una vera torcia umana, con tanto di palle di fuoco ed esplosioni degne di una bomba. Il suo problema è che non riesce a contenerlo e che man mano che lo usa ne diventa succube, trasformandosi in un vero mostro. La nostra eroina è anonima e scialba, assolutamente poco definita (tanto che mi sono resa conto solo a metà che era afro-americana) e troppo zuccherosa. Ha la fastidiosa tendenza a fare la pucci pucci con Andreas, tutta amore e speranza nel futuro, con l'occasionale atto di sacrificio in onore della causa. Salvano la situazione Tegan, che spicca sempre, Brock e Kade che saranno i prossimi protagonisti. Uno spazio piccolo ma significativo ha Hunter, che mi intriga talmente tanto che soffro all'idea di aspettare altri 3 libri. Insomma, senza infamia e senza lode, leggibile, leggero ma anche dimenticabile in un batti baleno. One of the themes romance authors tend to put in at least one of their books (if it's a series) is the theme of having an aloof male lead refusing to be in a relationship (it's generally some shitty variation of "I'll hurt you if I let you get too close" -- be it via superpowers or daddy issues) with the female lead.

I struggled with even giving the book a 2 - I just kept wanting SOMETHING to happen as I turned pages. It cheapened the concept of the blood bond for me - which kinda pissed me off. And yes, I know that in reality cheating cheapens marriage in general - but I don't read paranormal to read about REALITY.

I found myself wanting to skip pages anxious to get to...something. Then to find out the reason for Wilhelms hatred of Andreas? That was a big "that's IT?! That's ALL? for me. I might be talking myself into a lower rating at this point. The date night for Andreas and Claire in the middle of the book was like wtf? We're in danger and you can be tracked by your actual breedmate but hey - lets go have dinner in town. Grr.

Also can we talk about the fact that Wilhelm can find her b/c of their blood bond like a freaking homing beacon but she goes right to the precious compound filled with breedmates, children, pregnant breedmate and all of their equipment etc just laaadidah and no one says a damn thing?!

There was, what felt to me, a mountain of back story and mini bios on characters that I found frustrating. As a 6th book in a series with so many characters - covering your bases so that new readers have a clue whats going on just feels cumbersome to those who have been reading book by book. If it can be done well, it sure wasn't done well in this book in my opinion. Too much of it without anything happening in between and the side story of Hunter as the supposed big bad for x amount of chapters was just too cliche alongside all the other frustrating things.

Sorry Lara - this one just felt like a chore to me. Having said that, I like the characters in the series enough to head for the next book...just maybe not for a while.

Decide di vendicarsi di tutti i Ribelli fino a raggiungere il capo dei capi,Wilhelm Roth,ma quando lo raggiunge trova solo la sua compagna della stirpe Claire Roth(che Reichen ha lasciato senza una spiegazione ,in realtà era ed è ancora dominato da un demone che non riesce a controllare). E’ la prima volta che i due protagonista hanno già avuto una storia in precedenza e che quindi si conoscono già. L’amore mai spento si incendia di nuovo. Reichen vuole Wilhelm e Claire(che ha la capacità di entrare nei sogni) scoprirà che il suo attuale compagno è un mostro . la passione esplode di nuoco anche se il tradimento fra i compagni della stirpe non è ammesso. A Boston verranno aiutati dai guerrieri dell’Ordine e saranno coinvolti nella ricerca dell’Antico,tenuto prigioniero da Dragos e usato per procreare nuovi GenUno istruiti per distruggere l’Ordine. Ovviamente è un romanzo avvincente e molto più pieno d’azione degli altri,ma al tempo stesso domina su tutto la vendetta e il dolore lasciando da parte l’intreccio amoroso che ovviamente avrà un lieto finale seppure poco vissuto.

This particular installment of the Midnight Breed series was just another incredible read even though the Order Warriors took a backseat since this was Andreas Reicken's story.

In the last book, a corrupt Breed civil government official had Andreas human friend turned into a minion and then had his whole Darkhaven family slaughtered. This move on the part of, William Roth, sent Andreas over the deep end. Andreas has a unique and terrible gift handed down from his breedmate mother, he's a pyrotelekenetic. This sounds cool, but in Andreas' case, he's barely in control as he goes about exacting deadly revenge on all who had anything to do with the murder of his family. Andreas is finally to the point where he only has the mastermind of it all left to kill and if anyone gets in his way- this includes William Roth's breedmate, Andreas' former love of his life- he will not hesitate to treat them as collateral damage. That is until he is confronted by Claire Roth- the only woman he has ever loved and the woman he walked away from without a word.

Claire's first view of Andreas after all these years when she thought that he died in the fire with his Darkhaven family is to see him coming toward her engulfed in a wall of flame with little sanity left in his eyes. Even in this fiercesome condition and knowing that he has killed others, she still protects him. Claire is forced to believe Andreas' assertions about her mate after several things happen that force her to flee for her life with Andreas into the protection of the Order.
Now Claire tries to convince Andreas that her love is worth more than his revenge though its not so simple of a choice. Andreas also must heed duty- help the order fight Dragos.

The plot was very exciting from the get go. I loved the pace and all the scenes of danger and passion. Andreas has both his pure vengeance, his duty and his love for Claire warring in him. Claire has to get past Andreas' previous desertion and her husband's betrayal as well as accept the Andreas that is before her now. Dragos and Roth have a truly 'crippling to the Order' plot hatched up on top of their world domination plan. The Order even at full strength are barely contending now that Dragos has sent his GenOne assassins after them. So much is on the brink!

The characters of Andreas and Claire are awesome. Andreas has been a favorite since I met him a few books ago and I was so glad to see him get his own store. Claire was the best mate for him. She could have come across as a 'meh' society lady who whined about what could have been and got clingy with Andreas, but when the chips were down she showed a backbone of steel.

I can't wait to see what happens next especially with that little scene about the empty trailer near the end. And the hits just keep on coming for those poor Breed warriors!(less)

I love Vampire stories. Some of my favorites are about Vampires that don't fit the old mold of undead mindless creatures or undead soulless creatures. Sure those stories are interesting in there own right but I love fantasy so I want to read about vampires that are alien creatures or good guys or struggling.

The Midnight Breed series is an excellent example of one such story. Yes, they feed off of humans. Sure those stories are interesting in there own right but I love fantasy so I want to read about vampires that are alien creatures or good guys or struggling.

The Midnight Breed series is an excellent example of one such story. Yes, they feed off of humans. Yes, they need blood to survive and you could say that some of the vampires in this series are soulless. The premise is that a couple thousand years ago (or something like that) an alien race arrived. They were vicious killers who couldn't be out in the sun. These creatures could breed with special human woman called Breedmates (they have a tiny birthmark that is a crescent with a star). So the next generation of Breed males was born (they only have male vamps). Because of the viciousness of the Ancient Breed Males, some of the First Generation Breed males (their sons) declared war and killed all the Ancients to protect humans from them. Then the Breed Warriors came together to police the race and take down and vampire that fell into the deadly Bloodlust.

In the present, the Warriors are fighting to stop a member of their race who sees the humans as creatures to conquer and who has been killing Breedmates.

Andreas is not a Breed Warrior. He was the head of a Darkhaven in Germany and had helped the Warriors on more than one occasion. In the previous book, we learn that Andreas's human friend Helene was turned into a mindless Minion of another vampire and sent in to kill everyone who resided at Andreas's Darkhaven (they were mostly family, no children but nephews). Andreas wasn't present during the massacre but arrived after to discover the carnage. The result was an extreme anger over what happened which manifested in his ability which was an all consuming fire that radiated from within him. This fire will destroy everything in its path and so Andreas sets out to find Willem Roth the vampire responsible for the deaths of all those he held dear.

Claire is Willem Roth's uphappy Breedmate. She lives separately from her mate who is cold and distant. She doesn't understand him and doesn't really want too. What Claire doesn't know is that Willem took her as a mate because he knew she loved Andreas and he wanted to keep them apart and kill Andreas.

Claire's home comes under attack by a nearly invincible assailant and soon discovers that is it Andreas in the grip of the pryo power he has. She flees only to become curious about the man she once loved when the sun starts to rise. She finds him and brings him back to her home, burned from the Suns rays.

Things only develop from there as Andreas and Claire realize they still love one another and become bound in their attempt to stop Willem Roth as he works for another Vampire who is killing Breedmates.

Lara Adrian really digs deep into the horrors of the criminal mind with this book. We discover the told disregard that Dragos and Willem have for Breedmates who are being used as incubators and then killed. You rarely get foes who are so twisted as to toss a woman into a cage with a vicious alien/vampire to be raped and fed on, though it doesn't entirely come out and say such things. Adrian really gives you a bad guy you can hate and hope is destroyed in the end.

Andreas has developed over several of the books and became increasingly more interesting. In this book, I would say his powers and his overall character development were good but not great. He was differently a character I became interested in but was a little disappointed with by the end of the story. I assume his development will continue into other books.

Claire was an interesting Breedmate because of her ability but also because she was strong. I have continued to like that the woman of this series are not the timid type as it doesn't seem that timid woman will really work with such men. Claire is ready and willing to jump into the fray and help the Warriors find clues to what Dragos is up too and where he's hiding.

I have liked the continued involvement of Teagan as he is my favorite of the Warriors. He grew a lot in his book but we see him taking on the wise old vamp role which is a nice change. He's still a kick ass Vampire but he has become more prominent in the stories. We do still see the other Vampire Warriors but it just seems that Adrian has an affinity for Teagan.

I would say that this book is good enough to read if you are liking the series and wish to continue (as it does have development in the conflict of good and evil) but I would say most of the other books in this series were better.(less)

If you have been reading my reviews, you know that this series follows a group of vampires known as The Order. Their mission is to keep both the civilian vampire population and humans safe from Rouges. Rogues are vampires who have succumbed to their blood lust and have turned into nothing but vicious, blood drinking killers.

Each book in the series so far has followed a different member of the order. First was Lucan, then Dante, Tegan, Rio, and Nikolai. The sixth book takes a diversion from focusing on The Order to telling the story of Andreas Reichen, who is the head of a Darkhaven in Berlin, Germany. In the last book, "Veil of Midnight," Andresa returns to his home to find everyone inside murdered. This is when we find out Andreas' power - pyrokinetics. His rage burns so hot that a single ball of fire thrown at his estate burns it to the ground. From the moment he discovers the carnage, Andreas knows that an enforcement agent by the name of Wilhelm Roth was the culprit. Andreas and Wilhelm have a past - a past that has collided violently with the present and will only end when one of them dies.

In this book, we find that Andreas has begun taking his revenge against Roth, picking off his guards and anyone associated with him one by one. His final goal is to kill Roth, even though he knows that he might die in the process. Each time he uses his power, the fire consumes him just a bit more, and he requires more blood to recover. His fate seems limited to either succumbing to blood lust or becoming consumed by his power.

Claire Roth is married to Wilhelm - she was also involved with Andreas many years ago. The news of his supposed death hits her hard, so she is shocked when he shows up at her country estate looking for her husband. But, this isn't the Andreas she fell in love with many years ago. Rage and grief have transformed him into a creature hell bent on only one thing: revenge. He tears apart the estate, looking for Roth, despite Claire's protests that her husband does not live there. Her marriage to Roth was a farce from the start and she has spent the past thirty years living apart from him, only seeing him when he needs blood.

When his rage cools enough for him to think clearly, Andreas realizes the danger he is to Claire. He left her because of his power, and now not only does she know what he can do, she has seen him kill. Despite all of this, Claire is determined to help Andreas. She sees glimmers of the man he used to be - the man she used to love. Claire soon realizes that Andreas doesn't want her help - he wants to find her husband and kill him.

Meanwhile, we find out that Dragos, the vampire responsible for waking the Ancient, is stepping up his plans for world domination and with Wilhelm Roth at his side they plan a big surprise for the warriors.

This is a story of star crossed lovers and the perseverance of their love despite daunting obstacles - Claire's blood bond to Wilhelm, Andreas' need for vengeance, and a Breed vampire bent on world domination. But, in the end, nothing and no one can keep Andreas and Claire apart.

"Ashes of Midnight" is a great addition to the Midnight Breed series. It was interesting to learn more about Andreas, a character that we had already been introduced to in previous books. The members of The Order and their mates made appearances throughout the book, giving it a familiar feel, while still being fresh.

We also get a deeper look into the vampire culture in this book as we learn more about Dragos and his plans to create an army of Gen One vampires. This story line has been building over the course of the series, and with a twist at the end of the book, it doesn't seem that it is going to be resolved any time soon. I like that there is a common thread running through all the books, allowing us to both become invested in the mission of The Order as a whole, while also following the love story that is the central focus of each book.

This is another great story with strong characters you quickly grow to love. Andre is beautiful and broken; Claire is hurt but stubborn. All of the Order's warriors are still focused on their mission, while building a true family within the compound. I hope you are reading this series with me. If you are looking for an adult paranormal romance series, the Midnight Breed should definitely be on your reading list(less)

With each book I hold out hope of learning the story of how the Breedmates evolved since they are the only females capable of producing offspring with the Breed. Since each Breedmate possesses a variation on the same birthmark, I have assumed they must share a common genetic history, possibly even tied to that single Breed mission to Earth. Maybe someday we'll get a first-hand look at the Ancients' homeworld as well.

Previous novels in this series have dealt with the Order, a renegade group of vampires banded together under Gen One Lucan Thorne to stop Rogues, vampires who have gone feral and succumbed to bloodlust. Later, the Order takes on a new mission: to fight Dragos, another Gen One vampire bent on controlling the Breed and human world through any means necessary.

Every vampire possesses a paranormal trait inherited from his mother and Andreas Reichen is no different. Andre's pyrokinesis threatens to burn not only him, but everyone around him as he hunts down Wilhem Roth after the man ordered the killing of Andre's entire family. Claire's Breedmate ability is to dreamwalk. While Claire's willingness to use her ability is important to the plot, I think it would have strengthened the story if Claire learned to wield it aggressively, such as in taking control of another's dream instead of simply observing. Characters from previous novels frequently play a role in later series installments, so I hope to see this type of development for Claire in a later book.

Adrian elegantly rendered the strengthening reconnection between Claire and Andre, but also addressed the fact that Claire is technically still married to another man. I thought this was a nice twist on the Romance "fated mate" trope in that here was a couple that did not automatically find their happily ever after right away.

While not my favorite installment of this series, I still very much enjoyed Ashes of Midnight and am looking forward to the release of Adrian's next novel, Shades of Midnight, in Spring 2010.
