Sadly, I was only able to read the Jeaniene Frost story which is the reason I bought Unbound. The rest of the book was not for me.

1. Key Line Drifter by Kim Harrison
Tried to get into this. It was about fairies and after 10 pages, I gave up. Did not interest me at all. Unwilling to finish.

2. Reckoning by Jeaniene Frost
Enjoyed it! This is the prequel to the Night Huntress series and features Bones! Love his character! The story dials us back to the time just before Bones goes to Ohio and meets...more

THIS IS A GREAT SERIES! It has become my all time favorite.
KIM HARRISON(Dawn Cook) is the best, you will be hooked from book 1, page 1.

SHE WILL ALWAYS LEAVE YOU WANTING MORE...AND WAITING FOR THE NEXT IN THE SERIES!

You will not be disappointed! K.H.'s characters come alive, you will laugh and cry with them, grow tremendously from book #1. I love the world that K.H. has created. Bio-engineered tomatoes, witches, vampires, pixies, faeries, trolls, wolves...

The first book runs kinda slow in the be...more

Can't wait to read this....the story in it by Jeaniene Frost is from Bones' point of view!

Kim Harrison's "Ley Line Drifter" is a short that features Jenks and Bis from her "Hollows" series. Jenks takes on an outside job from another pixy and starts his own detective agency. This story did not have much substance and did not tie back to the Hollows series very well. 3 stars

Vicki Pettersson's "Dark Matters" is a short that gives some background on a former Light Agent Jaden Jacks. JJ begins an illicit affair with a Shadow Agent, Solange. I like the way Vicki ties her short stories back...more

I only read Reckoning by Jeaniene Frost and I really liked it. Ahh Bones. He is my favorite part of the Night Huntress series. His English (Spike) accent seems a little subdued here which was a wee bit disappointing but nitpicking aside I really liked this short story.

Unbound is an urban fantasy anthology featuring stories by Kim Harrison, Jeaniene Frost, Vicki Pettersson, Jocelyn Drake, and Melissa Marr.

Ley Line Drifter by Kim Harrison: The main reason I purchased Unbound as I am a huge fan of the Hollows series. The story features Jenks, Rachel Morgan's pixie partner, as he investigates a disturbance in a park that is causing harm to pixie children. Jenks was his usual fun self and Bis, a gargoyle, added to the fun. It was also enjoyable to see a more confi...more

Kim Harrison's "Ley Line Drifter" - 3 Stars: Main character is Jenks! Love that. He takes on his own client here with the help of his family, Bis and Ivy. Jenks is such a warrior in this one. Always the family man and a true friend. Pretty good story.

Jeaniene Frost's "Reckoning" - 4 Stars: Good story! New Orleans, 2004. Bones, an English vampire, is assigned to hunt down a ghoul couple who've returned to the city on a killing spree. A ghoul's method of killing is a bit gross, but enough detail i...more

This anthology includes 5 new stories by popular paranormal authors. In all cases (except for Marr's story) the stories are set in preexisting worlds created by the authors. My favorite of the bunch were "Ley Line Drifter" which gives you a closer look at Jenks' family and "Rekoning" which introduced me to Jeaniene Frost's writing. This book made me want to learn more both about Frost and Drake and read some of their series. "Dark Matters" by Petttersson is an important read for those of us read...more

In "Ley Line Drifter" by Kim Harrison Jenks is approached by another pixy for a job all his own. In a park there is a pixy family that is being attacked by a statue, it's killing the children in the night. Jenks knows that something is trapped in the statue and has to think of a way to get it out, but is getting it out really the right thing to do?
In "Reckoning" by Jeaniene Frost we get a peek into Bones' life before he hooks up with Cat. There's a murderous couple loose in St. Louis and it's Bo...more

"Ley Line Drifter" by Kim Harrison-
I was really happy that it followed Jenks (with Bis the gargoyle as his sidekick). I've only read the first book so far in that series, but he'd already grown to be my favorite one there. It was a good quick story. I don't know what else has been introduced in the series, but you can read it and not wonder what you've missed.

"Reckoning" by Jeanene Frost-
I'm glad she decided to write about Bones. He is an awesome character and it was interesting to be inside his...more

1. Ley Line Drifter by Kim Harrison
(Story takes place after White Witch, Black Curse)
If you're a fan of the Hollows series, you'll definitely want to read this short story. It feels like it's set the groundwork for these characters to re-appear in the main series (like how Pierce was first introduced in a SS). You don't have to have read any of the books in the series to understand what's going on, but for full enjoyment, I recommend reading the other books in the series first. There are WWBC sp...more

I picked up this book specifically for the story about Jenks that Kim Harrison had in it. Needless to say, I loved it. You get a more personal look into the life of both pixies and gargoyles, and Jenks teams up with the newest addition to the Hollows family to dispatch a rather upset ghost.

Jeanine Frost's story was a little different than I expected. I was going into it expecting an excerpt of both Cat and Bones, but Cat does not appear within the story. Rather this tale takes place in New Orlea...more

4/5 Ley Line Drifter: Not really sure how I feel about this short story... it took a lot to actually get into the story. I like that its not about Rachel, but gives a little more body to Jenk's character as well as Bis, but I'm not sure I care for the open ending... especially knowing that there won't be a sequel.

-10/5 Reckoning: I LOATH reckoning... the character is one dimention and a sexist pig. He has no weakness, and seems to get everything solved even though its not because he's smart or i...more

I only read the short story Reckoning by Frost. This was a short prequel to the Night Huntress series, but involving only Bones. And it's in his point of view!!!!! Suffice it to say that I loved it. Locale: New Orleans, mostly during Mardi Gras. Players: some very famous figures from New Orleans history that I won't spoil (much) but they involve a voodoo queen and a famous husband and wife who were known for torturing their victims with medical experimentation. The book opens on what seems like...more

I only read the first two stories.

Line Drifter: Jenks is probably my favorite character in The Hollows Series so reading a whole story centered around him and the rest of the pixies was just great. Finally I got some written confirmation about the possible effects of the make-a-pixy-humanlike-size curse on Jenk's life span. I know the series is supposed to be dark and characters are supposed to die. I'm fine with it. As much as I like Matalina, her stubbornness will probably lead to her not taki...more

I find anthologies rather hit or miss, but this one was a hit for me.

1. Key Line Drifter by Kim Harrison
This story was from the Rachel Morgan/Hollows world, and features Jenks. I loved the story, and how it showed his love and devotion to his family. I also suspect that characters mentioned here will show up in Rachel's books soon.

2. Reckoning by Jeaniene Frost
Loved it! This is a Bones story, following him to a hit in New Orleans right before he goes to Ohio (and Cat). You get to see what a g...more

This book was pretty good. Introduced me to some new authors. I had not read any Kim Harrison before and was planning to at some point. I hope the other reviews are right and her other stuff is better. I did not find the story in this book engaging at all. Mind you, I've not read anything else in set in her universe, but I just didn't care at all about the little pixie nor his family.

Since I've read all the Cat & Bones books, I was actually a little confused on timeline with the Bones story...more

This was a pretty good anthology of short stories that take place in the same world as these authors' urban fantasy series. I was familiar with half the authors. As far as I can tell, there's no unifying theme tying the stories together but that's okay.

Kim Harrison's story was focused on Jenks. A fellow pixie comes to him for help because a statue is causing one of his children to sleepwalk/fly and attack the statue so hard she's causing herself pain. It's also caused one of his newlings (kids n...more

I picked up this collection of short stories because I love Kim Harrison's stuff, but I enjoyed all of them.

'Ley Line Drifter' by Kim Harrison - Jenk's is hired to investigate a paranormal attack on a pixy family. - A great Jenk's character building / adventure story (Jenk's is awesome :) ). I thought the reasoning behind his actions was shaky at times. The door was left wide open for this plot line to be continued in future Hollows book.

'Reckoning' by Jeaniene Frost - Bones is hired to hunt do...more

Jan 22, 2012 K rated it 3 of 5 stars  ·  review of another edition Recommends it for: fans of fantasy and/or the authors
I must start off by saying that the main reason I was interested in this book was the short story by Frost, featuring....(sigh) Bones. The other reason is that I like books like these as I can read stories by author's I enjoy, and get to know new authors and series. Basically, Unbound is five short stories of paranormal romance and fantasy by 5 different authors. As I liked some of the stories, and didn't like others, I thought I would write a brief review about each story.

I picked this up because I read the series written by all the authors in it except for one (Marr). It was a fairly entertaining little read. I think my favorite was the short by Jocelynn Drake. That held my interest the most. Although the Bones short wasn't far behind. This was the first time I had read an anthology, and while it was pretty good, I think I would have preferred reading any of their full length novels. And I don't know how many would have picked up new fans if they weren't already...more

Total stars for the whole book: ★★★★½ - Really enjoyed most of them, but didn't love the Pettersson SS, which brought it down some overall.

Ley Line Drifter by Kim Harrison: (The Hollows SS - 7.5) ★★★★
I really liked this SS, since it gives a pixie eye view of the world. I'd never really thought about pixie culture before reading this one. This SS falls between White Witch, Black Curse and Black Magic Sanction, which means that Mattie (Jenk's wife) is still alive. That was an odd thing to see, but...more

Ley Line Drifter by Kim Harrison finds Jenks taking on his own case without Rachel's help to help a fellow pixy deal with mysterious threatening statues. Jenks learns there is more involved than taking explanations at face value.

Reckoning by Jeaniene Frost pits vampires against each other and against ghouls in New Orleans.

Vicki Pettersson's tale focuses on the Light vs. Dark struggle and the creation of the Kairos, a mixture of both.

Jocelynn Drake gives insight into the constant vigilance requir...more

Man I’ve been somewhat delinquent in writing my reviews... I waited more than a week before giving this book its proper review, which probably wasn’t a great idea since I have moved on to other books since so I think I might lost some of my immediate thoughts. My review below may contain spoilers, so proceed with caution.

A book with stories filled with action, supernatural and darkness, no fluff.
Kim Harrison gives us a shortstory with Jenks on an indipendent assignment with Bis.
Jeaniene Frost story is Bones before he met Cat in New Orleans with Marie Laveau and encountering Ralmiel =)
My favorite Dark Matters by Vicki Pettersson gives us the story of Jaden Jacks, Hunter as we know from the Signs of Zodiac. How he met Solange, married her and how Warren decided to erase the groups memories of JJ. I loved reading h...more

This rating is only based on the first 3 stories in the book. The first story, by Kim Harrison, features Jenks going solo and saving the day. It was delightful. The Jeaniene Frost story gives us a P.C. (pre-Cat) Bones story and I loved it. The Vicki Pettersson story tells the tale of Jaden Jax and how he became Hunter and the female Shadow that led to his downfall. I imagine that anyone unfamiliar with Vicki Pettersson's Sign of the Zodiac series would find this story more than a bit confusing,...more
