Sadly, I was only able to read the Jeaniene Frost story which is the reason I bought Unbound. The rest of the book was not for me.

Kim Harrison's "Ley Line Drifter" is a short that features Jenks and Bis from her "Hollows" series. Jenks takes on an outside job from another pixy and starts his own detective agency. This story did not have much substance and did not tie back to the Hollows series very well. 3 stars

I only read Reckoning by Jeaniene Frost and I really liked it. Ahh Bones. He is my favorite part of the Night Huntress series. His English (Spike) accent seems a little subdued here which was a wee bit disappointing but nitpicking aside I really liked this short story.

Kim Harrison's "Ley Line Drifter" - 3 Stars: Main character is Jenks! Love that. He takes on his own client here with the help of his family, Bis and Ivy. Jenks is such a warrior in this one. Always the family man and a true friend. Pretty good story.

This anthology includes 5 new stories by popular paranormal authors. In all cases (except for Marr's story) the stories are set in preexisting worlds created by the authors. My favorite of the bunch were "Ley Line Drifter" which gives you a closer look at Jenks' family and "Rekoning" which introduced me to Jeaniene Frost's writing. This book made me want to learn more both about Frost and Drake and read some of their series. In general the stories in this book tend more towards action/urban fantasy than romance. I personally enjoyed that. All in all a great collection of stories. See below for more detail on each story in this anthology.

"Ley Line Drifter" by Kim Harrison (5/5 stars)
An excellent story set in Harrison's Hollows world, it's about Jenks helping a fellow pixie. You learn more about pixie culture and there is a ton of action. Given the ending I am wondering if what Jenks and Ivy unleashed will come back to haunt them in the next Hollows book.

"Reckoning" by Jeaniene Frost (5/5 stars)
A prequel to the Night Huntress series by Frost. This story tells about a vampire named Bones who is hired by the New Orleans Queen vampire to take out some serial killer Ghouls. On top of this hunt for the killers, someone is trying to kill Bones. I have never read any of Frost's Night Huntress books but based on this story I will have to check them out. I like her writing style; no-nonsense and lots of action. Bones was an intriguing character and Frost creates an interesting variation on paranormal alternate worlds.

"Dark Matters" by Vicki Pettersson (3/5 stars)
This is a prequel to her "Signs of the Zodiac series". It tells the background/history of JJ/Hunter. It was good to read a story that made the events in the "City of Souls" (book 4) make more sense. I still don't understand why "City of Souls" couldn't have explained what this story did. If you are reading the "Signs of the Zodiac" series then reading this story is a must. As for the story itself I didn't like it all that much (aside from the info it gives). The story is more a romance than anything and much of the action is pushed aside for numerous sex scenes. It was okay, but nothing to write home about.

"The Dead, the Damned, and the Forgotten" by Jocelynn Drake (4/5 stars)
Prequel to the Dark Days series by Jocelynn Drake; I have not read any books in this series. This story follows Mira as she tries to track down a nightwalker killer and avoid assassination herself. Both Mira and Knox are intriguing characters. The story was action packed and hints at an interesting world. An enjoyable read. I will have to check out the Dark Days series eventually to see how I like the full novels.

"Two Lines" by Melissa Marr (4/5 stars)
This story tells about Eaven, she is a human that will become a glasitig is she ever does two things: kill and have sex. She is hell bent on staying human. Things get out of control when she starts hunting a drug lord. When her grandmother provides a sexy bodyguard for her Eaven begins to wonder if her desire to stay human is worth the sacrifice. Not as much action as the other stories, this story presented a very unique world with supernatural creatures different than I was used to seeing. I actually like Marr's writing style in this story quite a bit more than her writing style in her "Wicked Lovely" series.(less)

In "Ley Line Drifter" by Kim Harrison Jenks is approached by another pixy for a job all his own. In a park there is a pixy family that is being attacked by a statue, it's killing the children in the night. Jenks knows that something is trapped in the statue and has to think of a way to get it out, but is getting it out really the right thing to do?

"Ley Line Drifter" by Kim Harrison-
I was really happy that it followed Jenks (with Bis the gargoyle as his sidekick). I've only read the first book so far in that series, but he'd already grown to be my favorite one there. It was a good quick story. I don't know what else has been introduced in the series, but you can read it and not wonder what you've missed.

If you're a fan of the Hollows series, you'll definitely want to read this short story. It feels like it's set the groundwork for these characters to re-appear in the main series (like how Pierce was first introduced in a SS). I picked up this book specifically for the story about Jenks that Kim Harrison had in it. Needless to say, I loved it. You get a more personal look into the life of both pixies and gargoyles, and Jenks teams up with the newest addition to the Hollows family to dispatch a rather upset ghost.

4/5 Ley Line Drifter: Not really sure how I feel about this short story... it took a lot to actually get into the story. I like that its not about Rachel, but gives a little more body to Jenk's character as well as Bis, but I'm not sure I care for the open ending... especially knowing that there won't be a sequel.

Line Drifter: Jenks is probably my favorite character in The Hollows Series so reading a whole story centered around him and the rest of the pixies was just great. Finally I got some written confirmation about the possible effects of the make-a-pixy-humanlike-size curse on Jenk's life span. I know the series is supposed to be dark and characters are supposed to die. I'm fine with it. As much as I like Matalina, her stubbornness will probably lead to her not taki...more I only read the first two stories.

Line Drifter: Jenks is probably my favorite character in The Hollows Series so reading a whole story centered around him and the rest of the pixies was just great. I know the series is supposed to be dark and characters are supposed to die. I'm fine with it. As much as I like Matalina, her stubbornness will probably lead to her not taking the curse, which will mean her death. I'll be sad about it but it's ultimately fine since it adds to series. But Jenks is irreplaceable. The books would suffer a lot with him gone, so I'm glad there's a good explanation for his extended life expectancy.

Bis, too, is a character that never gets much page time and for the last couple of books I've been wanting to know more about him. Having him messing with Ivy's computer was just hilarious and I hope he gets included a little more in following books.

Didn't care much about Sylvan to be honest. Daryl, though, has potential. A snotty nymph with a goddess complex that's one of the good guys, asks if Ivy is a goddess and then proceeds to have a cat fight with her? What more can you ask for?

Reckoning: Bones is always a favorite so I enjoy his stories just as much as I do Cat's. I find that they have a very similar "voice" and in this case it's not a bad thing. Frost's style makes heroes honest, loyal, sympathetic to other people's problems and ready to take on anything, just like heroes on any other series. Unlike those other heroes, though, Frost's are ruthless when they need to be, have no qualms about killing the bad guys and never ever whine about why they're in the middle of a situation and that's amazing. I hate it when, in other series, the main character decides to do something that's quite possible out their league and even argues with everyone telling them so, only to have to read later, in the middle of the fight, sentences like "oh god, why didn't I listen?" or "why do these things happen to me?"

So, though is a pretty straightforward story about one of Bones's jobs before meeting Cat and there's nothing special about the plot, it's still very enjoyable for the characters themselves and we get a better idea of how Bones's single life was.(less)

This book was pretty good. Introduced me to some new authors. I had not read any Kim Harrison before and was planning to at some point. I hope the other reviews are right and her other stuff is better. I did not find the story in this book engaging at all. Mind you, I've not read anything else in set in her universe, but I just didn't care at all about the little pixie nor his family.

This was a pretty good anthology of short stories that take place in the same world as these authors' urban fantasy series. I was familiar with half the authors. As far as I can tell, there's no unifying theme tying the stories together but that's okay.

I picked up this collection of short stories because I love Kim Harrison's stuff, but I enjoyed all of them.

As I liked some of the stories, and didn't like others, I thought I would write a brief review about each story.

The other reason is that I like books like these as I can read stories by author's I enjoy, and get to know new authors and series. Basically, Unbound is five short stories of paranormal romance and fantasy by 5 different authors. As I liked some of the stories, and didn't like others, I thought I would write a brief review about each story.

Ley Line Drifter, Kim Harrison- Probably my least favorite of the stories. Although I enjoyed the magic aspects of the story, as I was not familiar w/ any of the other books either in the series and/or written by her, I found the story extremely frustrating and difficult to follow as I did not know the characters, their history/connection, and/or some of the references. I know it's only meant to be a short story, but some background would have made the story more enjoyable for me.

Reckoning, Jeaniene Frost- As you can guess, my fave of all the stories. I absolutely love Bones's character and would probably like anything that featured him in it! I missed not having Cat in the story, as it was a prequel, but def enjoyed Bones!

Dark Matters, Vicki Petterson- Overall an enjoyable story with suspense and an interesting plot that kept me engaged. I can't say I would read the other books in the series, though.

The Dead, The Damned, The Forgotten, Jocelynn Drake- Probably my second favorite story of the five. I enjoyed Mira's character, especially her toughness and "take no crap" attitude, as well as, the other characters. Although I have not read other books by this author, and/or in the series, it was easy to follow which added to my enjoyment. I would def consider reading this series and other books by this author.

Two Lines, Melissa Marr- I was kind of looking forward to this story as I have seen her name associated, and mentioned, w/ author's I have enjoyed in the past. And overall, I found the story an easy, enjoyable read w/ interesting characters. I will probably more than likely try the other books in the series and by this author.

So, although I found a couple of the stories enjoyable, they were not enough to up my rating to four stars. Thinking back, although I like paranormal romance, I am not normally a big fan of fantasy, so that probably impacted my rating as well. I can't say that I would recommend this book to other readers, so will let readers decide for themselves.

I picked this up because I read the series written by all the authors in it except for one (Marr). It was a fairly entertaining little read. I think my favorite was the short by Jocelynn Drake. That held my interest the most. Although the Bones short wasn't far behind. This was the first time I had read an anthology, and while it was pretty good, I think I would have preferred reading any of their full length novels. And I don't know how many would have picked up new fans if they weren't already...more

This rating is only based on the first 3 stories in the book. The first story, by Kim Harrison, features Jenks going solo and saving the day. It was delightful. The Jeaniene Frost story gives us a P.C. (pre-Cat) Bones story and I loved it. The Vicki Pettersson story tells the tale of Jaden Jax and how he became Hunter and the female Shadow that led to his downfall. I imagine that anyone unfamiliar with Vicki Pettersson's Sign of the Zodiac series would find this story more than a bit confusing,...more
