The main issue I had was Dylan flat out annoyed me in some scenes. Especially with her escape attempt. What was that about? She could have went along with Rio's plans to scrub her and then went about her life. I think it was just a plot point to drag out the story, frankly. My other issue was: Okay, this sounds really sexist, but her potty mouth was really bugging me. It seemed like the woman could not express herself without expletives and...more I didn't like this book as much as Midnight Awakening. The main issue I had was Dylan flat out annoyed me in some scenes. Especially with her escape attempt. What was that about? She could have went along with Rio's plans to scrub her and then went about her life. I think it was just a plot point to drag out the story, frankly. My other issue was: Okay, this sounds really sexist, but her potty mouth was really bugging me. It seemed like the woman could not express herself without expletives and oaths. I'm not overly found of foul-mouthed heroes (probably Sam from the Suz Brockmann books is one of the few notable exceptions), but a bad-mouthed woman really is like nails on a chalkboard. It's a small thing, but that didn't help to endear her to me. Also, she just seemed too abrasive at times. She was used to being a survivor and being tough. The whys were revealed and it made sense, but I never felt for her the way I wanted to. I feel I'm being too hard on her. She was a good person, and I admired her dedication to her mom, and her sense of loyalty. She had a good head on her shoulders, and she did the right thing when it came to the pictures and story about the hibernation chamber. But, she just rubbed me the wrong way.

I really liked Rio. I felt bad for him for what he had lost. I think he had some self-pitying moments, but with his breedmate betraying him, I couldn't blame him too much. Overall, he was a good hero.

The romance itself seemed a bit rushed. I wasn't sure I completely bought into Rio falling so hard and fast for Dylan. Probably needed about fifty more pages for me to feel that. However, I liked the way Eva's ghost manifested to try to make things right after what she did. That was a nice paranormal touch.

My issue with this story is no fault of Lara Adrian's. It's me. I just like more going on in my paranormal romances. Compared to some of my other series (and it's wrong to compare, I know it), this series seems less vivid. I like the rich worldbuilding that I am treated to with some of the other paranormal faves. I'd be the first to admit that I'm not that keen on aliens as a plot device, and the whole alien vampires came to Earth and bred with special human women to form the Breed is just not floating my boat that much. I miss all the various paranormal species that interact with other. Heck, I'm a supernatural girl. I came out and said it, okay! Anyway, that's probably why I'm not in love with this series.

But, for what it is, I think the intrigue was good, and the conspiracy behind the spectres that Dylan was seeing was pretty interesting and rather disturbing. I feel bad for those poor girls.

As far as the story wrap-up, it was a little abrupt, but left some loose ends. I guess I'll have to see how this picks up in the next series. In the end, Midnight Rising was a good read, but it didn't set me on fire.

So book #4 of the Midnight Breed series, I enjoyed it but I had my issues with the flow of the story. Don’t get me wrong it was really good as to be expected of Lara Adrian but there was just something about the time span between the couple that left me going “hmmm”.

So the Breed are warriors sworn to protect humans and civilian vamps from vampires gone rogue, which means they just cant stop from killing and sucking the human population dry. Things are about to spice up for the breed when a new evil has been introduced and they fear the worst; they just might be helpless to stop it.
So we met Rio from the very first book Kiss of Midnight when he was caught up in a bomb blast and almost lost his life, only to find out the one who orchestrated said blast was his Breedmate. Talk about the ultimate back stab. So disfigured and emotionally ruined Rio just wants to end his life and end the suffering that comes along with betrayal.

Dylan is on vacation a trip she’s taking for her mom. Mom couldn’t make it so she went along instead. Dylan works for a tabloid magazine that writes articles about alien abductions and Big Foot spotting. Not the most credible magazine, so while on some mountain in Prague she see’s a ghost which leads her to a tomb, that leads her to Rio. So Dylan just saw something she was not to see and some crazy guy is hell bent on stopping her from reporting her findings. She cant help being drawn to this disfigured stranger and something’s telling her that he is more than he appears to be.

So boom Rio says he is a vampire and the crescent moon birthmark she has says she is a Breedmate which means she has a special genetic make-up that makes her able to give birth to future Vamps, talk about crazy. Well the truth becomes clear in Rio’s fangs and the crazy way he puts her to sleep. The life she once knew becomes a world filled with things she never thought possible and decisions she never expected to make.

Rio aka Eleuterio de la Noche Atanacio my translation “ hey sexy how about you drop those pants”. Is one messed up vamp but you cant help but to love him. He is one black out away from killing someone, and five scars ahead as being the sexiest warrior, Whooza he breaks your heart while you think dirty things about him.

So the relationship between these two felt rushed. I think more time was needed for Rio to figure out his feelings and come to terms with what happened in the past. Plus with Dylan’s decision to remain in the human world, that came tumbling down too fast. I am glad things worked out but it seemed forced. Together I like them, but they don’t light my fire the way Tegan and Elise did but Rio is right up there with hot and hotter. The ending also felt short, I wanted more of a showdown between the Breed and the bad guys, all I got was a few heated words. Overall I enjoyed it and cant wait to dive into the others.

On the PL(Pants Losing) scale a solid 4. Rio burns.

Until an intrepid reporter stumbles upon the lair and snaps some pictures before escaping. Weak from starvation and madness, Rio pulls it together enough to go after the girl. Disgusted to find she's a reporter ready to tell all, he captures her only to realize she's already sent the photos off to not only her editor but also some family and friends.

Taking her with him to a safe haven in Germany, she fights him tooth and nail yet something about this fierce, beautiful young woman draws him out of his pain.

But when he discovers she's part of a rare group of women who have the exact genetic makeup to effectively mate with the half alien/half human Vampires known as the Breeds, things get even more difficult between them. The last thing Rio
wants is to be connected to another woman, and he means to leave this one behind- to get back to dying.

Dylan cannot believe the world she's stumbled into, but part of her realizes what the scarred, tortured man before her is saying is true. She agrees to join him on a journey back to his home in the United States to clear up the mess she inadvertently made when she sent her pictures to her editor. In the end, she has o choice, for not only is Rio's world threatening her family and her very existence, but something about Rio makes her want to see him whole again.

I was surprised Adrian came up with Rio's story so early on in the series.
At the end of Kiss of Midnight he was utterly wrecked by Eva's betrayal. Rio starts off the novel suicidal and ready to give up, but before the climax even hits, he's telling Dylan he loves her and he's can't live without her?! Not that I read paranormal romance for it's basis on reality :-) - but this fantastical improbability is the very reason I had issues with Midnight Rising.

Still, I liked Dylan a lot. She was feisty and not easily swayed, and she was ready to give up the love she had for Rio in order to be with her ailing mother. She had alotta heart and I adore that in a heroine.

I also really liked Rio, considering his unlikely speedy recovery. A capacity to forgive and love again, so deeply-so quickly, is an admirable thing- if a bit far-fetched, in my jaded eyes. And, believe me, this one is all about the easy happily ever after- despite the blood sucking Vampire/Alien aspect.

I'm also diggin' the whole Alien Breed progenitor bad guy aspect and the thriller plots it gives to this set of books. So, given the whole, I did enjoy this novel.(less)

WHOA! Another great read for my keeper shelf from Lara Adrian. I just finished this book and my heart is still racing.

Dylan Alexander is on vacation in Europe. Her mother is dying and it was her wish for Dylan to take her place on this fabulous trip. Dylan's always been a little different...she can see ghosts. Midnight Rising tells the story of Rio, the most scarred and tormented member of the Breed. A year after a brutal betrayal which left him physically traumatised and emotionally wrecked, Rio is on the verge of suicide when Dylan Alexander literally stumbles across him. When Dylan sees something she shouldn’t and then takes off, it’s up to Rio to track her down and fix the problem. Oh, and what do you know, she bears the mark of a breedmate, genetically gifted to be able to bond / mate with a member of the Breed. Convenient! When Rio is asked to contain her and bring her back to the Order for damage control, they are forced to spend spend some quality time together, and it doesn’t take long for a deep attraction to form.

I love Rio and Dylan! They are both strongly drawn to each other from the very beginning, but things progress slowly with them. Mainly because Rio considers himself damaged goods. But Dylan is a strong, confident female who isn’t about to let him shut her out.

“I’m the last thing you need, Dylan. If you reach into the trap to pull me out, I can’t promise I won’t take your arm off in the process.
“You’re not going to hurt me.”
Rio grunted, a coarse, animalistic sound. “How do you know I won’t?”
“Because I’m going to trust you not to.”

The pacing of their relationship is really realistic, and their bonding is a really gorgeous moment. The two them together are so freaking swoony! Rio is obviously battling some pretty serious demons, but Dylan is there for him, loving him and helping him to heal and come to terms with who he is now. And in return, she gets this:

“You are pure flame. I touch you and I ignite. I kiss you and I burn to have more. You consume me… like no other woman before you, and, I am certain, like no other ever could again.”

SWOOOOOOOOOOON! You’ve gotta love the man!

The action in this one is also really intense. The overarching storyline is really picking up, with Gen One vampires and breedmates being killed, the mysterious ‘Ancient One’ making an appearance, and a new bad guy, Drago, emerges. He is seriously warped! But I like having an evil bad guy to hate, so it’s all good for me!

The rest of the Breed are all involved in the story, and there is a bit of character development happening behind the scenes, which I love.

I like how Lara Adrian isn’t afraid to shock her readers. Yes, it’s primarily a romance book with a HEA, but there is some real drama and shocks along the way. Overall though, this is a beautifully written romance, with lots of emotion, and action that twists and turns right up until the nail-biting finale. And it’s all set against a fantastic paranormal world that I just can’t get enough of! For the first time in this series, I didn’t think about the BDB once while reading. I think Adrian has found her groove, and it’s awesome!

I loved this story so much. There wasn't much other than Rio and Dylan's story, but I think it needed to be that way since Rio was able to find love so soon after Eva. Lara Adrian pulled this off beautifully.

I fell down the stairs because I was walking and reading this thing. They should add “HAZARD: So addicting, you may never put it down. (Watch your step!)” on the cover of these things! Despite my fall, I was able to save the page I was on, but failed to keep my coffee from spilling all over the floor. I spent precious reading time cleaning up at mess! But apart from my sore knee and the ruined carpet, I loved every moment of reading Midnight Rising!

I was not sure how this book was going to go for me, because I felt like it might have been too soon to tell Rio's story. However, this was totally not the case as Adrian was able to bring Rio "back from the brink" and make things right for him in this book.

Book #4 in the Midnight Breed series. This is the story of Rio and Dylan. Not bad. I had to finish reading it tonight because I could not wait till tomorrow to finish it. Roi had to learn to trust again after what had happen the year previous from the Betrayel of his first Breedmate. A really good book, just in how Rio and Dylan overcome their trust issues. Now I have to wait till December for the 5th in the series, Nickolai's story.

Lara Adrian delivers a sensational fourth novel in the Midnight Breed series with this one! It’s hot vampires at their best! Immediately I was pulled into the story because Rio was introduced in subplots during the other novels in the series, and I was curious about where Adrian would take him. The direction of the continuing inter-novel plot was fabulous and unexpected. I was just as interested in the “big” plot as I was the relationship plot between Rio and Dylan, and I couldn’t tear myself away from it at all. The setting of the novel bounced around throughout the novel which kept it very exciting and suspenseful, and allowed some international characters to be revisited. Themes of trust, redemption, and purpose play a big part in the story.

Rio was introduced at the beginning of the series as a very different character than he is at the start of Midnight Rising. At the beginning of this novel, Rio is a very broken, damaged man. He’s feral, miserable, and hurt beyond describing. As the novel progresses, Rio develops and changes. I enjoyed seeing Rio’s growth because he is the type of character that the reader can get really attached to. Dylan is a down to earth, relatable character. Of all the female characters in the series so far, Dylan was the easiest for me to connect with because her and her family were facing a sensitive and emotional situation that is similar to something I’ve experienced. The novel is still a light, steamy vampire read, but I though Adrian did a good of writing Dylan facing that situation. The heat and intensity between Rio and Dylan built quickly and was thoroughly satisfying to read. There were many teaser scenes in the novel where the passion was building then got interrupted, but when the moment was right, the results were blazing and feverish!

If you are looking for a hot, intoxicating read, Midnight Rising delivers. It also has a very “warm and fuzzy” feel when you realize that the characters saved each others in more ways than one.(less)

This is the 4th installment of The Midnight Breed series. Here we have Rio's story. In the earlier books, Rio's breedmate betrayed both him and the warriors resulting in Rio's face and part of his torso becoming scarred and disfigured. It's also left him very disturbed both mentally and emotionally.

Book #4 and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of "stuff" going on in the Breed world. (Oh my) As I read more into this series, I started enjoying it more. Characters develop well; they touched me. This was Rio and Dylan's story and the series should be read in order because Rio was the Warrior who was betrayed by his mate in an earlier book.

I liked Midnight Rising and I'll read the 5th installment that comes out in December. It's fun fluffy reading, I wasn't terribly attached to Dylan or Rio, but the action was good. A good escape.

I read a comment a while back that it the 1st book is very different from 2-4. After reading 1-4 I totally agree. Kiss of Midnight has more rituals and history where as the other 3 are more action packed sans rituals. They aren't different in a bad way, but nevertheless different. I wonder if Adrian writ...more

I just finished reading Rio's story and this is my least favorite of the series so far. I just didn't/couldn't connect to Dylan AT ALL. Unlike the other Breedmates in this series. I had originally thought it was just me. IDK, but from reading others reviews I know I'm not alone with this feeling of disconnect with her. She rubbed me in all the wrong ways (mostly). About Midnight Rising I liked it.
It's slightly inferior than the previous ones. Dylan didn't surprised me. She didn't conquer me the way Tess, Gabrielle and Elise conquered me. Nonetheless Rio's love story is beautiful just the same.
It's not going to be branded in my memory though. It's not my favourite.
I'm curious about Nikolai. I hope his book will be awesome.
I found Rio's ability intriguing and fascinating and I really liked the fact that Rio is just a portion of his name.

Prendiamo la suddetta eroina e la mettiamo nel mixer con l'eroe che, nel frattempo, è uscito dalla grotta bello pronto per essere gustato. Fate partire il mixer alla velocità - 1, perchè più è lento più ci piace *snore*, e aggiungete al composto i seguenti aromi: azione, poca perché non vogliamo risvegliare il neurone; passione, anche qui non abbondate; amore, okey vi permetto di usarlo quando non dovete tanto il sapore esplode senza preavviso; trama originale, e questa volta la dose è giusta ed infine il tocco che darà il vero sapore a tutta la storia: il piagnisteo. Ah si, che goduria. Un colosso di uomo, sfigurato e vampiro, un guerriero super terribile/temibile cosa fa? Diventa tutto softy inside appena vede il capello fulvo. Dimentica in un puff che la ex con cui ha passato mille milioni di anni l'ha tradito e si butta capofitto in una nuova storia d'amore perché...perché, non so perché. Invece di essere una bestia, tutto rabbia e violenza, sembra un poveretto depresso che si nasconde perché ha la bua sul faccino. Invece di usare il suo dolore per trasformarsi in una macchina da guerra, diventa una specie di psicopatico debole e inutile: nemmeno i suoi compari della Stirpe lo vedono per quello che era, ma come un sopravvissuto che ha bisogno di cure. Rio è una delusione, punto e stop. Lo volevo più cattivo, più tortured hero, come dire...un gran son of a bitch che si trova invischiato con un'umana. Avete presente che botti che avrebbero fatto? Ma no, lui deve essere un mollaccione. Dylan fa praticamente quello che vuole: lo trova, fotografa e sputtana l'intero ordine, riesce a scappare e anche quando si fa prendere continua imperterrita a fare ciò che meglio crede, tanto Rio gliela dà vinta perché è una compagna della Stirpe. Ma per cortesia, una reporter di serie F? Suvvia, lei tira le redini e lui raglia, per intenderci. Il livello di coinvolgimento per la loro storia è praticamente nullo: si ok, si incontrano e lui se la vuole fare subito, poi si innamorano e arriva il cattivo eccetera eccetera. Non basta, poveri noi, non basta per niente. Nemmeno l'idea del vampiro usato come cavia/stallone da monta riesce a risollevare il morale e ad accendere l'interesse. Siamo di fronte ad una storia noiosa, con personaggi noiosi e scritta pure in modo da annoiare. Tristezza infinita. Spero vivamente che questo sia l'unico passo falso della Adrian, perché altrimenti...povera me.(less)

Midnight Rising is the fourth book in the Midnight Breed series. I have to admit up front at this point, after having read and reveiwed three of theses books, and starting this fourth, that I really like this series. I like the overall concept of the Vampire, yet not undead, a living being that reproduces and is in all rights a being much like a human, just other worldly. In this series, there is never the making of a new vampire, only a minon, and that process, while we find it still happening...more Midnight Rising is the fourth book in the Midnight Breed series. I have to admit up front at this point, after having read and reveiwed three of theses books, and starting this fourth, that I really like this series. I like the overall concept of the Vampire, yet not undead, a living being that reproduces and is in all rights a being much like a human, just other worldly. In this series, there is never the making of a new vampire, only a minon, and that process, while we find it still happening was outlawed as inhuman. So we find that they are cultured and normal and living within what are the normal perimeters of human life, and that appeals to a great deal of people.

Once again this book follows the Order on their never-ending missions to stop those out there that want to take over and get rid of the human race or at the lease enslave them. At the end of the last book, we found them in a border mountain not far from Prague where they found the hibernation chamber of an acient one that had already been awakened and removed. Rio; poor battered, bruised, and unstable Rio asked to stay behind to close up the cave and the rest returned to Boston.

We have to return to the first book to pick up Rio's story, but on a mission one night Rio took the majority of an attack only to return badly injured and barely alive only to find out that his Breedmate Eva has sold the Order out to force him to leave the Order, which Rio would not do, so he denounced her, and she killed herself. This left Rio in and even worse state of mind than state of body. We worked for a year, through the books to recover enough to be able to go on the final mission of book three with them. But still, he was not all well.

In book four, months have passed since the team left Rio in the cave near Prague. He is still hidden deep within, but he is giving in to his mind and the dreams and the angry. He feels he is of no use to the team, the scars are too much for him to bear and no one will be albe to look at him like that anymore, he is sure of it, his plan, to use the explosives he has with him him to close of the cae and close himself into the cave. The problem is that he is weak, he is no longer feeding and he is having trouble standing or concentrationing. He just sleeps.

On an unplanned vacation of her own, Dylan Alexander is walking past the caves when she sees a ghost asking her to help him, help how she thinks, Dylan hates this, she has seen random ghosts all her life and she has never understood why, on curosity she wanders into the cave, only to awaken a sleeping Rio and notice a drawing on the wall that has her confused, it looks exactly like her own birthmark. As he takes pictures, the confusions clears from Rio and he realizes he has a mess to clean up.

I am always so impressed with the writting and the way the story flows in this series, that I am turning page after page and before I know it I am done with the book and I am still wanting more. I love this series. I really feel it is well written and easy o contect to and even if you don't like a typial dark, foreboding vampie series, you might like this.(less)

After being betrayed and seriously injured, Rio deserved better her. I also had a problem with the fact that Dylan was a captive for the majority of this book and "fell in love" with Rio while in captivity. It didn't seem right to me.

I am totally addicted to this phenomenal series and installment number four, MIDNIGHT RISING, is by far my favorite! Rio is a man I just want to hold and comfort. He broke my heart earlier in the series and his part in this story endeared him to me even more. Alrighty... so when I read the first, Kiss of Midnight, I was totally hooked because it was new kind of vampire story that I had never read before, and I totally loved it. So naturally I read the second, Kiss of Crimson, and then third, Midnight Awakening and I was quickly getting bored because it was all starting to sound the same. The story arc on this particular Breed Warrior has been building from book one and I was excited to see that Rio was finally getting the prime time attention. I knew his story would be a doozy and it was. I had high expectations and I was not disappointed.

Rio was betrayed by his breed mate in book one and her betrayal hurt him emotionally as well as physically. He will always bare the external scars and he is experiencing traumatic brain injury and PTSD symptoms. He looks on himself as a useless...more
