I've indulged in a couple of Trek novels since I started to watch the shows earlier last year, and this is one of the better ones.
Due to being busy, I had to listen to the audiobook, instead of reading the prose, and boy, was I lucky. This particular audiobook was read by none other than Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew.
The novel starts with Janeway on an unnamed planet, still stuck in the Delta Quadrant. From there, the plot involves plasma storms, a dead, angelic species, and the Kazon, who look...more

Definitely one of the better Voyager books. The plot of the events happening in real time was fairly disposable, and so were the characters - with one notable exception.. Janeway. Ultimately it is a Janeway biography, and I wasn't expecting miracles from the set up so it didn't bother me too much.
Janeway's back story is creative, although at times almost too dramatic. Her characterization in the actual tv series is haphazard at best, but this really solidified her for me. A couple lines thrown h...more

I had high hopes for this Voyager book because it is written by Jeri Taylor, one of my favorite writers of the show.
Unfortunately, she does this weird thing where she uses a rare word or a familiar word in an unfamiliar way and I am ripped out of the story while I look up the word. Luckily for me, I am reading on my Nook, so looking it up is just a matter of holding my finger on the word and selecting "look up." Still, I find the practice distracting. I'm a Janeway fan so I just had to get this book. I'm glad I did. It filled me in on Janeway's life and why she is the way she is. To her introduction to Data, to her blind date with William Riker, to how she knew Tom paris's father, Her first meeting with Tuvok(she didn't like him much at first), to her relationship with Mark,
to her greatest tragedy. This book was a page turner and I didn't want to put it down until I had read it all. Sometimes when I read a book about a series sometimes the c...more

My introduction to Voyager sci-fi fiction came when my grandmother passed away and I inherited this book, as mother knew that I shared a love of the television series with my grandmother. Although a prolific reader, my grandmother was a farmer's wife in rural Tennessee, and she never had a chance to finish high school and go to college. Our cultural differences created boundaries more pronounced that I wish they'd been, so this shared bond was all the more meaningful. I realize the sentiment mak...more

In spite of my opinion on the merits (or lack thereof) of "Voyager", this is a rather solid biography of Captain Janeway, and what makes her tick. In fact, I find "Star Trek" producer Jeri Taylor's prose style to be very smooth & readable...and I would have rated this four stars, but (1) the framing story is too disposable/forgettable, and (2) I just can't buy her relationship with Mark. Thank goodness the Delta Quadrant took her away from this rather bland fellow...
In e...more
I listened to this as an audiobook narrated by Kate Mulgrew which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Being a Janeway fan, it was great to hear her backstory and to find out how she became the strong woman we see in the series. Kate's narration was also fantastic - it made the story that much more absorbing and believable.
It was a most inspiring story and I encourage all Janeway and Voyager fans to give it a read/listen.

This is an okay book but I found it hard to get really excited about it.
Mosaic tells the life story of Captain Janeway, a compelling tale of personal bravery, personal loyalty, tragedy and triumph. As told by Jeri Taylor, co-creator and executive producer of Star Trek: Voyager, this is an in-depth look into the mind and soul of Star Trek's newest captain.

Gotta love the background you gain on Janeway's character in this easy read. Mosaic by Jeri Taylor also becomes a lot more interesting if you read into Janeway's flashbacks from a psychoanalytic perspective. Recommended for insight into the character development of a strong woman. I just wish the pages on the Pocket editions didn't yellow so quickly.
Nice 'biography' of Janeway and what made her the woman/Captain she is.
One of the weakness of 'Voyager' is we didn't get much of a feel for what the crew left behind, so it was hard to get a handle on them or get the feeling that they were in any way traumatized by being stuck in the 'Delta Quadrant'.

A lot (not all) of Kathryn's background in here found its way in to the show Star Trek Voyager, which shows the pull Jeri Taylor had.
The book itself was really interesting and set up in a way that made it hard to put down. I only wish Kes wasn't in it, but that was unavoidable as it was set during season 2 of Voyager.

I thought this was a nice "fill in the blanks" book to fill in the life of Captain Janeway and it did a nice job until the end, which was totally unfulfilling. The author was a producer on the Voyager TV series and knows the character well, but trying to wrap up the entire book and give meaning to the title in the last paragraph was a little pathetic. And although I am new to the Voyager "book" universe, I was upset to find that although Taylor has Janeway meeting Riker at the Academy, the next...more

I listened to the audio book version of Mosaic. It was told by Kate Mulgrew, which was fabulous because it made the story so much more canon and Kate has a fabulous reading voice, she should do more audio books.
I ADORE Captain Janeway. She is one of my role models and had a strong influence on my growing up as Voyager was airing during my teens. I adore strong women on tv and Janeway is one of the best.

Fairly standard psychological drama à la Gerald's Game et al: something bad is happening and only coming to terms with some terrible repressed memory can save the day.
The book's surprisingly dark at times for a Star Trek novel, but neither that nor the clunky cameos can save it from passable mediocrity.

I expected this to be really cheesy, and instead ended up really liking it. It gave me a lot more respect for Captain Janeway. :D I gave it to the sister of a friend of mine, who is a HUUUUGE Janeway fan.

I love Voyager, and I love Captain Janeway, so this book is an obvious delight for me. Oh how I wish Jeri Taylor could've written every episode of Voyager.
