Way cool. I was a little worried when I started this book. I'd seen a few reviews which were less than stellar. Well...I don't know what book they read, but I really enjoyed "My Wicked Enemy" by Carolyn Jewel. It's got mages, demons, witches, and hot sex. And the premise of the book is a new (at least for me) take on the whole demon/mage thing. If I had to categorize it, I'd probably call it a paranormal, urban fantasy, contemporary romance. And a darn good one at that.

This was a very enjoyable PNR/UF with a darker edge, which makes it even more delicious. This is a world where the Demons (fiends) are the good guys; and the Mages (witches) are the bad guys. The humans in this world are called 'vanillas'. The wordbuilding was very good, especially when the author delved into the inner workings of her Demons and their world. The Demons keep their human face at all times during the story except during some of the sex scenes, and these guys all seem to have some s...more

I do not even know how to review this book! I had such mixed feelings throughout the entire thing! I was literally up and down the whole time. When I first started reading it, I thought: wow, here is another great paranormal author, similar to J.R. Ward's style, which was very exciting to me as I have been disappointed in Ward's last two books.
HOWEVER, I completely HATED the sex scenes in this book! And I had NO idea that she was going to segue into menage because I hadn't felt that vibe whatso...more

This is a debut, and a rather confusing one at that. The premise is interesting enough: there are human mages and witches who possess magic, and several kinds and levels of demons, and the mages enslave the demons to their will. Carson is a witch but doesn't know it - raised by a mage, Magellan (whom she thinks is some kind of scholar and rare artifact dealer) who stunted her powers, she witnesses him perform a bloody and violent ceremony and flees. Out on the streets of San Francisco, a demon w...more
At the beginning this was so promising! But then unfortunately it didn't carry it through to the whole book.
I thought this was a unique spin on the whole demons and magic-users genre but the female character was so weak and allowed herself to be used by everyone - I don't really like weak characters. The magic use was quite confusing as to how peoples powers were channelled through others etc so I got a bit lost in some of these scenes.

This is the first book in a quite unjustifiably underappreciated series. Sure, at first glance, it sounds an awful lot like generic PNR - big magic dudes with mysteriously large amounts of money hang out, do violence, and somehow, all within the timeframe of the series, find their One True Ladyfriends. I think of this as the "Supernatural Frat Bros" genre.
But this ain't that.

I have read a few of this authors books and have enjoyed them, this book however ,I did not know quite what to make of it.She introduces us to mages ,who are the bad guys and the fiends/demons ,who are the goodguys. The witches are the heroines,so far so good.I did enjoy the story right up till the infamous attic scene,WTH was she thinking of writing this scene. That completely threw me, all of a sudden ,every fiend she saves, she has the urge to have sex with.....then towards the end when she saves...more
You know, I think if I said, "Carolyn Jewel attended the Laurell K. Hamilton school of urban fantasy writing" and called it a day, most readers would probably get all the information they need from my review. Maybe I should add, "Not the early Anita Blake books, late-period Laurell K. Hamilton, and yes, that does mean what you think it means."

I have mixed emotions about My Wicked Enemy. There were parts of the book that I loved; and other parts that just didn't work for me. I loved the premise...a witch (who has no idea she's a witch) is thrown into a world unlike anything she's ever imagined. In comes the good guy who looks and acts like the bad guy...They fall in lust first, then love afterwards. However, in the midst of it all, I found myself quite confused. I felt Ms. Jewel just threw concepts/terms at the reader that were only r...more

A book I got for free on my Kindle. Yes, it's "paranormal-romance", but not the now almost normal vampire/were protagonist. These books use demons(fiends) that seem to me to be based on stories of the djinn and magic using humans that can, and frequently do, enslave the demons to their will.
So, what happens when a demon runs into a witch who doesn't know what she is because she has been used and abused by the older, more powerful mage she is fleeing? Of course this is a romance, so instead of k...more

This book is not for the faint of heart.
I'm serious. Carolyn does not hold back in this novel. The story itself is an adventure - your classic good versus evil with the slight problem that our Heroine, Carson, is supposed to be the badguy. Except she's not. Which confuses the heck out of Nikodemus. He's just a fiend trying to free his fellow fiends from the evil magekind.
Whoa, wait a sec? Did I say that right? Yes, this is the backwards story to what we usually hear. The good mages try to lock d...more

I decided to pick up this title because it was $1 and it was by the same author who's been getting a lot of buzz for her historical, Scandal.
The premise for the story seemed interesting enough. Carson Philips is on the run from the man who raised her after seeing him perform a violent, unforgivable act. She runs from the only life she's ever known only to meet Nikodemus, a fiend (type of demon). He's supposed to be her enemy, but he may be the only one that can save her...

Usually I don't read PNR books (I'm more into historical fiction), so I'm not quite sure why I picked up this one, but I'm glad I did! I read this book in German, though, so maybe I just really liked the way it was translated.
I loved the fact that the romance between the protagonists didn't develop too fast. To me it was believable. I hate romance books where the first kiss happens just after a few pages and then they're all over each other. Sure, they did feel attracted to each other right from...more

I loved the premise of this book but it was confusing at times. Demons are good witches are bad and humans have very little importance at all in this world. Once the book got going it was easier to follow. It was a little farfetched that Carson did not realize she was a witch until a demon is ready to kill her for being one.

An interesting first book to the series. I read the fourth book first and was so interested in how the series started and who Nikodemus was that I just had to check out the first book.

Quit at page 145.
The heroine is being hunted by supernatural badasses with intent to kill. The hero leaves her alone at his house without any protection, but before he goes, he calls for pizza delivery so she'll open the door to anyone who shows up on the stoop. She does, in fact, welcome a bad guy in with open arms. This is consistent with the overall comptence level of the "good guys" throughout the 13 chapters I finished.

Oh-ho-ho....me likey this book! This was a fun ride and I definately enjoyed the beings that Jewel created. The mage/demon structure was truly interesting and the 'inpediment' that the heroine suffered from made it actually easier to understand the magic system (strangely enough). Very good on the 'uber-alpha-male-hero' scale as well. Lots of sexy man business here for those who like the my oath to protect you aspect. Even though the heroine, Carson, is suffering from an ailment, for lack of a b...more
Carson Phillips ran away from Alvardo Magellan, her guardian since her parent's death when she was just a child. Magellan cared little for her, but kept her in the lap of luxury, even if it was her prison. The house was always full of his lackeys and all of them were male, with no other female in residence, she learned through magazines and the internet. When she interrupted his meeting to beg for something to stop her headache, she saw him holding a bloody knife and saw the bloody body of what...more
At first I loved it. Then I didn't. And then I did, again. The strength of this book lies in it's intriguing set of characters. Fans of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood will love the cast of badasses found here, especially Xia, the biggest, baddest mother of the group. This is also a very sexy book, with the temperature ranging from sizzling to scorching all the way through. The plot is a little basic -- in truth there isn't a whole lot going on -- and this definitely reads as the first book...more

I would have given this book more stars if it hadn't been so slow and confusing in the begining. I still don't know what a fiend is. Are they demons, dragons? There's talk about the sexual depravity of the fiends but she never show's what that is other than the fact that the heroine has sex with two of the fiends in the same room, which I didn't understand why. It was such a random scene. Nickodemus is the alpha fiend known as a warlord and other fiends have to swear fealty to him and other warl...more
Ok so here's the deal, I have no idea what to say about this book. I have mixed feelings. I liked the writing style. Enjoyed for the most part the characters. Understanding all the new lingo was fine . It wasn't all that hard to get into.

Carson Philips has escaped the only caregiver she has known her whole life. She was brought up in the lap of luxury ever since her parents died when she was only eight years old. Alvaro Magellan may have given her food and shelter, but when it came to love, that was something he never gave Carson. Carson found Magellan to be a bit eccentric, especially with his studies of magical myths. Carson was truly at his mercy, especially from the horrible migraines she has on a daily basis that she contro...more

This one was really good. And it helped me understand the second book so much more!! They go into the history of the fiends, and why exactly mages and fiends hate eachother.
I really liked the build up between the two main characters, Nicodemus and Carson. There was a lot of sexual tension which made the book even better. The plot is definitely unique out there among the PNR books. It was a very nice breath of fresh air.
Great story, can't wait to read the third one whenever it comes out!

New take on paranormal, Fiends are demon-esque warriors with magic, and Mages kidnap and magically control the Fiends, turning them mage-held. They have to do whatever the mage wants against their morals, their sexuality, beliefs or kin. So who would believe that a witch and a fiend could come together? This book is like a Maserati, Hot, fast, and sharp curves in all of the right places.

I read this while slightly under the weather with a cold. Parts of the story didn't track. Is that because of me or the writing? I'm giving Carolyn the benefit of the doubt because:
I've read her before and really liked her.
I can't wait to buy the follow up to this book.
And it's got a bit of uncommon kink (at least for a mass market), and well I think that should be rewarded.

Carolyn Jewel was born on a moonless night. That darkness was seared into her soul and she became an award winning author of historical and paranormal romance. She has a very dusty car and a Master’s degree in English that proves useful at the oddest times.
