Way cool. I was a little worried when I started this book. I'd seen a few reviews which were less than stellar. Well...I don't know what book they read, but I really enjoyed "My Wicked Enemy" by Carolyn Jewel. It's got mages, demons, witches, and hot sex. And the premise of the book is a new (at least for me) take on the whole demon/mage thing. If I had to categorize it, I'd probably call it a paranormal, urban fantasy, contemporary romance. And a darn good one at that.

This was a very enjoyable PNR/UF with a darker edge, which makes it even more delicious. This is a world where the Demons (fiends) are the good guys; and the Mages (witches) are the bad guys. The wordbuilding was very good, especially when the author delved into the inner workings of her Demons and their world. The Demons keep their human face at all times during the story except during some of the sex scenes, and these guys all seem to have some serious money. They also have a psychic connection between themselves and those bound to them. The titles of some of the books in the series are not great, but the series itself is an excellent read. Each book is better than the last; and the 3rd and 4th books are especially good reads.

In this story, Carson is a witch being controlled by a more powerful mage (Magellan) who is drawing off her powers. There are Demons who are controlled by mages (witches if female), and Demons who are free. Nikodemus is a Warlord Demon, and is leader of a group of free warrior Demons; all of which have varying degrees of magic, besides being bad-asses with some rough edges. Carson manages to escape from Magellan and joins up with Nikodemus, who has some quite powerful magic himself. She eventually discovers her powers, one of which is to be able to sever the bond from a demon and mage; thereby freeing them.

It didn't take me long to realize that I was not reading a traditional PNR; but something fresh and different. There were a couple of scenes when Carson was developing her powers to sever mage/demon bonds that will set some traditional PNR readers off; especially the way Carson freed Iskander from his long-time psychosis with the help of Nikodemus. I was so totally fascinated with the Demons that I looked at it as a glimpse into some of the darker areas of their world, and I enjoyed the exploration of the inner workings of the demon mind. The demons/fiends aren't like us, and I appreciated the differences; even as it pertained to their sexuality. I think the 'connection' between the kin's minds is one of the things that sets this series apart from the norm and makes it so great. There's really not that much actual sex in these books, but the sexual tension and sexy headgames add a delicious touch of kinky without taking it to the extreme. The mind connections are part of what the Demons are, but the some of the the sexual mind connections are probably not for the prudish.

Highly Recommended. Really good book, really interesting almost UF world, one with some dark edges that set it apart from the norm. Fast-paced, with good action scenes. If this had been marketed correctly, this could have been a top PNR/UF series right now. I think the cheesy bodice-ripper type titles hurt the books; but I'm really happy to have discovered this series.(less)

I do not even know how to review this book! I had such mixed feelings throughout the entire thing! I was literally up and down the whole time. When I first started reading it, I thought: wow, here is another great paranormal author, similar to J.R. Ward's style, which was very exciting to me as I have been disappointed in Ward's last two books.

This is a debut, and a rather confusing one at that. The premise is interesting enough: there are human mages and witches who possess magic, and several kinds and levels of demons, and the mages enslave the demons to their will. The premise is interesting enough: there are human mages and witches who possess magic, and several kinds and levels of demons, and the mages enslave the demons to their will. Carson is a witch but doesn't know it - raised by a mage, Magellan (whom she thinks is some kind of scholar and rare artifact dealer) who stunted her powers, she witnesses him perform a bloody and violent ceremony and flees. So begins a series of battles between demons and mages - and we're on the demons side, by the way.

The writing really needed a lot of work. There were a lot of inconsistencies, body parts were suddenly in different places/poses, characters knew things that hadn't been revealed in their presence (and no one had told them, they just knew because the other characters knew?) and the sex was just weird. Honestly, first rule of romance fiction: don't cut the first sex scene short, you gotta continue to completion. Dear me! I don't think I've read a sex scene that's quite this confusing, either. It was all over the place, I couldn't even picture it because the descriptions made no sense, so it really fell flat. And later - what was that weird scene in the attic?? Nikodemus practically gives her to Iskander and has her himself afterwards. Ick. Could've been erotic... wasn't. Why Iskander and none of the others Carson had helped? Didn't make sense.

There were some parts that had me pretty engrossed, but all in all it was too much of a mess. And I was really disturbed by the portrayal of women - all three of them: clueless and submissive and seeking to please Carson (who offers her mind up to Nikodemus with little qualm, knowing that he could and would take possession of her - control her, in effect); the traitorous Fen who willingly sided with the mages, and the female warlord who was the only one who attacked them, irrationally, it seemed. I kinda expect this kind of thing from some of these authors, to be honest, but Jewel has a Masters in English! Honestly, this is the kind of thing you learn to analyse in first year! So she either knew it but wrote it this way deliberately, perhaps to try to fit in with the genre's formula? or she didn't notice which makes me question the worth of her degree. That sounds pretty narky I know but really, this is basic stuff, and it's very blatant in this book.

At the beginning this was so promising! But then unfortunately it didn't carry it through to the whole book.

I thought this was a unique spin on the whole demons and magic-users genre but the female character was so weak and allowed herself to be used by everyone - I don't really like weak characters. The magic use was quite confusing as to how peoples powers were channelled through others etc so I got a bit lost in some of these scenes.

This is the first book in a quite unjustifiably underappreciated series. Sure, at first glance, it sounds an awful lot like generic PNR - big magic dudes with mysteriously large amounts of money hang out, do violence, and somehow, all within the timeframe of the series, find their One True Ladyfriends. I think of this as the "Supernatural Frat Bros" genre.

You know, I think if I said, "Carolyn Jewel attended the Laurell K. Hamilton school of urban fantasy writing" and called it a day, most readers would probably get all the information they need from my review. Maybe I should add, "Not the early Anita Blake books, late-period Laurell K. Hamilton, and yes, that does mean what you think it means."

This is actually not at all what I expected from the first chapter of MY WICKED ENEMY, which I read as a sample. The writing is noticeably more polished in the beginning of the book, and has a kind of bleak simplicity that really drew me in. The heroine, Carson, is in a pretty miserable situation and I sympathized with her immediately. But after the exposition, where we get the lowdown on who the main characters are and why the mages and demons hate each other so much, the book really shifts gears.

Demons are all attracted to mages - mage blood is like demon catnip - so every demon who meets Carson wants to sleep with her. Some of them try to force her, some of them try to seduce her, but they all try. The plot makes sense and all, and it's fairly interesting, but it seems like the real purpose of the plot is to manufacture sex scenes. The book features a lot of graphic sex, and a lot of it is rough or kinky. Not saying that's good or bad, just fair warning.

As the book wore on I had a harder and harder time picturing the supernatural elements of the plot. There's a lot of stuff about magic - pulling magic, touching someone else's magic, channeling magic through someone else - and I got totally lost. I'm not sure what people can do with magic in this world, or what its limitations are. Without a really clear guide to how magic works, a lot of key scenes in the book made hardly any sense to me. I mean, I understood who won and who lost or whatever, but not the mechanics of how it happened.

It's also a big deal that the hero, Nikodemus, has both a human and a demon form, and at key moments shifts into his demon form. But we don't really find out what that demon form looks like...so I understood it was exciting and forbidden, but remained fuzzy on the details. If the author is going to go there, shouldn't she really, really go there?(less)

Huge parts of the book are from Nicodemus viewpoint and I wasn't interested in his situation because we don't learn much about him - probably because there is so much hair-trigger danger permanently happening that all that happens is reaction in a panic, to minimize the danger.

And all the TSTL bits - all the people on the side of hero and heroine know they are being hunted, but "super"-hero still leaves her out of his sight regularly, even though he knows that he can't detect the bad guys without her - once it is because she wants to get a Brazilian waxing!!

And then all that rough sex gets acted out in a scenario not unlike a hentai anime, in two rounds - one single, one ménage - one after the other for about 40 pages? Something like that.

I get that I'm supposed to see that she enjoys it and asks for it, and the first one is probably to SAVE HER LIFE!! but you know, from the beginning of the book the heroine learns she has been the tool for a dark mage for basically all of her life and is dying of what he did to her and now she gets saved only by becoming subservient to a fiend warlord (who likes her so much that he only goes into her head if she asks him too, but, you know, he really HAS to ask her for rough sex, because he just can't control himself around her, so she had better agree...) - whom she falls in love with, which may partially be Stockholm syndrome (when he first meets her he asks her to convince him not to kill her), to the extent that she swears blood allegiance and is now programmed to make sure he survives whatever else may happen.

Indeed.

Well, at least she gets good sex out of it - compared to the drugs her previous owner gave her.

You know, Carolyn Jewel does know how to write intriguing fantasy. In this book there were so many buttons of pet peeves pushed that I'm not following along.(less)

This book is not for the faint of heart.

I'm serious. Carolyn does not hold back in this novel. The story itself is an adventure - your classic good versus evil with the slight problem that our Heroine, Carson, is supposed to be the badguy. I decided to pick up this title because it was $1 and it was by the same author who's been getting a lot of buzz for her historical, Scandal.

I loved the premise of this book but it was confusing at times. Demons are good witches are bad and humans have very little importance at all in this world. At first I loved it. Then I didn't. And then I did, again. The strength of this book lies in it's intriguing set of characters. Fans of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood will love the cast of badasses found here, especially Xia, the biggest, baddest mother of the group. I would have given this book more stars if it hadn't been so slow and confusing in the begining. I still don't know what a fiend is. Are they demons, dragons? My Wicked Enemy is a sexually charge paranormal romance that will keep you on your toes till the very last page. If you are a fan of magic, mayhem, witches and everything in between, this latest by Carolyn Jewel is the perfect read for you. This is one story that is not for the faint of heart especially when it comes to Carson. The poor woman is harassed, almost raped and killed and tormented, by even Nikodemus himself. But when Nikodemus realizes his true feelings for Carson, the sex scenes between them are smoking hot! Break out the fan because you will be sweating up a storm by the intensity between these two, especially when Nikodemus changes into his true form during his lovemaking with Carson.

Some may think Carson is a bit wimpy when we first meet her, but she quickly comes into her own and becomes the hero of the hour. With Nikodemus by her side, they are an unbreakable force that should not be reckoned with. For one paranormal story with a bite and sex scenes that simmer, definitely pick up My Wicked Enemy and the awesome storytelling of Carolyn Jewel. (less)

Shelves: 2009, paranormal-romance

This one was really good. And it helped me understand the second book so much more!! They go into the history of the fiends, and why exactly mages and fiends hate eachother.

I really liked the build up between the two main characters, Nicodemus and Carson. There was a lot of sexual tension which made the book even better. The plot is definitely unique out there among the PNR books. It was a very nice breath of fresh air.

Great story, can't wait to read the third one whenever it comes out!

New take on paranormal, Fiends are demon-esque warriors with magic, and Mages kidnap and magically control the Fiends, turning them mage-held. They have to do whatever the mage wants against their morals, their sexuality, beliefs or kin. So who would believe that a witch and a fiend could come together? This book is like a Maserati, Hot, fast, and sharp curves in all of the right places.

Shelves: kindle, romance-parnormal

I read this while slightly under the weather with a cold. Parts of the story didn't track. Is that because of me or the writing? I'm giving Carolyn the benefit of the doubt because:

I've read her before and really liked her.

I can't wait to buy the follow up to this book.

And it's got a bit of uncommon kink (at least for a mass market), and well I think that should be rewarded.
