2.5 - This is pretty cute in a few ways. First, the illustrations really help the story along because Olive is just too darn cute. Second, her hearing "All of the other reindeer", yet really hearing "Olive, the other reindeer" makes the story so much fun to read. We both cracked up when I read that part.
How Santa fixes the whole 'dogs can't fly' thing is just awesome. Everyone's seen illustrations of reindeer flying, it's in all of our brains, but who has ever seen the...more

This is the story of 'Olive the Other Reindeer',a small, shy dog. It is set on Christmas Eve, with olive hearing the song 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer', on her radio, she mishears it as 'Olive the other Reindeer', instead of 'all of the other reindeer'. After this epiphany, she rushes off to report to Santa (via public transport)arriving just in time to embark on Santa's yearly journey. Despite his reservations(due to her inability to fly), Santa invites Olive onto the sleigh. We are taken...more

I read this as a Tumblebook. Check your library's web page to see if it offers Tumblebooks. These are books that you can read online and they are delightful! This is the story of Olive the dog who, when she hears Christmas music thinks that "All of the other reindeer..." is really "Olive, the other reindeer." Olive sets off for the North Pole to help Santa deliver Christmas gifts to all the good little boys and girls. Along the way, her special talents come into play an...more

11) Walsh, V.; Seibold, J.O. (1997). Olive, the Other Reindeer. San Francisco: Chronicle Books.
(Ages 2-5) While singing “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” Olive hears the words: “Olive, the other reindeer,” and knows she must help Santa with his sleigh. Even though she is only a dog, Olive really does save the day, using the special talents only dogs have. The colorful, blocky illustrations are what caught my eye when choosing this book. The story is bright enough to be an antidot...more

Not only is this a solid story and the illustrations pack the pages with a joyful style, but the book's thoughtful design is wall-to-wall. Instead of limiting their cheekiness to in between the title page and "The End," Vivian Walsh's and J.otto Seibold's combined charm pops up on the slip cover (check out the bios), the end papers, and even the bar code comes with a saucy message.

The story is another version of how an individual's differences can be valuable to the grou...more

This is an absolute gem of a little Xmas book. The drawings are a quirky '60's style and the story is fresh yet familiar. The author has the ability to see with a child's eye, not patronizing, not sentimental, not cliched in any of the ways that books written for this time of year can tend towards.

If you are looking for a completely delightful book for the holidays, this is it!

Olive is a cute little terrier who mishears the song lyrics, “All of the other reindeer” as “Olive, the other reindeer.” She figures she is meant to go to the North Pole to join Santa’s reindeer. Santa and Comet aren’t sure why the small dog is there but give her a chance, and she saves the day by using her super-sniffer to guide the sleigh through the fog.

When we first received this book, I didn't think much of it. But after numerous readings, I realize that it has stood the test of time. We pull it out every Christmas and enjoy the quirky illustrations and the funny story. We notice new things every time and laugh at the things we remember. It also has a good message that everyone can find a place to help.

This is a fun story about a little dog named Olive who mishears the classic Christmas Rudolph song, "Olive, the other reindeer..." and thinks, wow, I must really be a reindeer. So, she goes to the north pole to help Santa. And help she does, in her own doggie way! :-) Very cute and fun story but the illustrations were not exactly my cup of tea.

My two older boys heard me reading this to my 3 year old this morning and wanted me to read it to them later. They both remarked how they loved to see the pictures the second time they heard it. The pictures are super cute and the story is as well.

Great find at the library.

A fun and quirky book about a do named Olive, who when she hears the song about Rudolf, things it is talking about her when it says "All of the other Reindeer." Knowing that Santa must be missing her, she embarks on a journey to join Santa as "Olive, the other reindeer."
Laura
5 stars for the illustrations and story, but only 4 for the writing, which is a little stilted - as if there is actually a lot more story here, but it had to be condensed into a short picture book. It would be fun to expand on this during Christmas time story-tellings.
Melanie!! :)
I found this book in my bookshelf. It is about a dog who is listening to the radio and she hears rouldof the red nose reigndeer but she thought it said Olive the other reigndeer so she went to the north pole and tried to blend in with the reigndeer.
Noelle Walsh
This is a great little Christmasy story. Perfect to read to your kids during the season. It's not often that you see a young dog getting confused into thinking it's a reindeer. It'll make you smile and possibly laugh. It's definitely a fun read.
Alison Strumbeck
Such a cute story but the illustrations are so ugly that it really detracts from the story. In my opinion illustrations are what make or break a children's book. If you combined this story with a good illustrator it would phenomenal.
Teresa
Olive thinks he is reindeer so he goes to the North Pole to join Santa and his crew. They all know he isn't a reindeer but let him ride along anyway. Olive actually saves Christmas by helping Santa and the reindeer and their trip.
Esther
Although Olive is a dog, he becomes one of Santa's reindeer! He has several unique qualities about him that help our Santa when they encounter problems. Great book to read around the holidays, and talking about our strengths.

This book is so cute I like how Olive says Olive the other reindeer instead of all of the other reindeer.I think Olive is a really good friend because when Santa dropped the gumballs Olive helped him.

Came across this book as a young adult and my boyfriend (now husband) gave me a copy for our first Christmas together. Now I love reading this to my own children. The illustrations are beautiful and the story very cute.

A great book to introduce a play on words. From the song, "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer", Olive thinks she is the other reindeer ("Olive the other reindeer"). As we all know, dogs can't fly like reindeer can, but Olive is able to find a way to help with her special talents. Like Olive, there are many students who want to help, but might not necessarily have what they need to help in the most obvious way. But, everyone has talents and everyone can help in their own special wa...more

The story of Olive, a dog who mistakes herself for a reindeer, is cute but not overly memorable. I'm not a huge fan of the illustrations, but this is a nice addition to the holiday picture book reading repertoire.

I didn't like this book very much. I found the illustrations unattractive and I didn't much care for the story. I wanted to like it, because a very dear friend gave it to my child, but I just couldn't like it.

Cute holiday read! My class always loves comparing Olive to Rudolph. This year one of my students said "it's like a homophone.... Olive the and all of the". I thought that was great!
Kirei
Olive the dog mistakes a line from a Christmas song for his name, thus sending off to be one of Santa's reindeer. A few lift-the-flaps, one scratch-and-sniff, and a pop-up.
Randi
This was pretty funny, I had to stop reading once because I was laughing. It is short with a simple plot, good for small kids, but the pictures will appeal to grade school age.
Kristen Scott
Such a cute and funny story about a dog who hears Rudolph and thinks it says "olive the other reindeer" instead of "all of the other reindeer".

A play on 'All of the other reindeer' and quite a fun take. Our 3-year old liked this one, but wondered about how the dog could also be a reindeer...
Rosalee

This story is about a dog who flies like a reindeer after Olive thinks she hears Olive the other reindeer instead of all of the other reindeer.
