description

stood at the window watching the cocoon, which hung in the winter air like an upside–down question mark. That was the moment... I understood. Really understood. Crisis, change, all the myriad upheavals that blister the spirit and leave us groping– they aren't voices simply of pain but also of creativity. And if we would only listen, we might hear such times beckoning us to a season of waiting, to the place of fertile emptiness.

"It's always difficult and risky to try to put soulmaking into words." - Kidd. This is a worthy disclaimer in the preface. Kidd's description of crisis and dispair and spirituality sometimes lean on the heavy, waxing, maudlin side - and if I had not experienced such times myself, I would abhor their description. However, I've been there as almost all of us have, and the few moments of tangled emotionl overkill are well worth the many nuggets nestled in between. I am thoroughly enjo...more

I read this for the first time in October of 2006, actually -- it was loaned to me by my friend Lucy. Around the holidays I went out and bought myself my own copy (and one for my mother) and proceeded to start re-reading it, bit by bit. Since I am expecting a child through adoption, I've been trying to actively wait with patience and grace. This has really been a challenge. This isn't why Sue Monk Kidd wrote her book, but that's the beauty of books -- we bring ourselves to them and sometimes...more

Most people know this author from her book "The Secret Life of Bees" (Fiction) but I would describe this as her spiritual memoir. The idea of "waiting" focuses on how God teaches us when we pause/wait etc. Insight comes in increments. While the book slowed at points, she offers some great thoughts.

"I often need permission to do daring things. And when I can't get it from myself, God often sends someone else to give it to me. As I struggled with whether to embr...more

I didn't give this book 5 stars because it was so thoroughly saturated with God, Jesus and the Bible. It got 4 stars because she didn't try to sell any of them to me, and the ideas of growth and transformation transcend religion and theism.

Probably, knowing already that she later abandons the strictures of her church tempered my natural revulsion. Plus, I love Monk Kidd in almost anything she does.

Things in my life have been strange for quite some time. This book was recommended to me by my spiritual advisor because of the cocoon references. I'd recommend this to anyone going through transition periods in their life. And as long as you don't mind spirituality, this is a good read.
I didn't so much learn anything new as had a feeling of confirmation that I am on the right path.

This is the second time I am reading this gem of book, and I can't get enough of it. A non-fiction work, the book explores the importance of waiting on the Lord through the tumultuous times of life. Kidd writes during her own personal midlife crisis, however, readers in any stage of life can relate to her inner struggles to find who she is. HIGHLY recommend for women in their 20s!!!

I wanted to read this book because I was curious about Sue Monk Kidd's religious views after reading The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair. It is an autobiographical book about a time of spiritual waiting and transformation. I found this book calming and earth-shattering at the same time.

I have a heart connection of experiences with this author. I have devoured her every word as she tells about her mid-life soul search and finding her true self. Her description of "waiting in the darkness" for God struck a chord in me that relates to my experience.

Before she was a best-selling fiction writer, Monk-Kidd wrote for various Christian publications. Although books that have a religious bent usually don't interest me, this is more about a personal spiritual quest and found me at a time when I needed it most.

This book was written by Sue Monk Kidd when she was going through her mid-life crisis, but I found that I could really relate it to my life at the moment. It left me with a strong sense of peace and hope. Its an easy read and uplifting.

This book was a most therapeutic read during a difficult time in my life. For anyone battling depression, I highly recommend this book as a non-sensational, authentic, sober approach to dealing effectively with depression.

So far I have really enjoyed this book. Sue Monk Kidd does a beautiful job exploring her own spirituality during a personal time of crisis and proves that sometimes standing still is the best course of action.

Read this book over the course of about a year. Not to be gobbled. If I could only own ten books, this would be one of them. Perceptive, courageous exploration of the spiritual journey.

A beautiful book. We all go through times when we are searching for direction, meaning. Kidd uses the metaphor of a chrysalis to give insights to this time. I've given it as a gift.
