Patti Callahan Henry’s book snuck up on me. I wasn’t overly impressed with her writing when I started the book and I can’t say that I fell in love with the characters or the secondary story (of the main character’s quest to preserve an island off Georgia’s coast) and yet, I finished the book with a lump in my throat.

Amy is happily married to Phil. Her kids, Jack and Molly, are grown; Jack is actually away at college and Molly in her last year of high school. Her world, however, is about to be tu...more

This book is a story about what can happen when your child unknowingly dates the child of a previous lover. As if this is not enough, things ended badly between the two lovers and there were a lot of unanswered questions and betrayals that come to the surface 25 years later when they meet again because their children are dating.

At this point, both are married with children but the past keeps coming back to haunt them. Both of the main characters are into wildlife preservation and become involved...more

Books like this should come with a WARNING: Bittersweet ending...prepare to cry your eyes out in the epilogue and then feel like sh*t afterwards when you realize there isn't one more page to make it all better. SmileyCentral.com

I'm sure PAtti CAllahan Henry is an absolute lovely person, and know that she is friends with some of my friends. But I just am not a huge fan of her books, even though they are set in places familiar to me. The premises of some are interesting, but they just don't resonate within me. I'm sure the fault lies in the reader. The foundation of this one is a thought that has crossed my mind several times -- what if your child falls in love with the child of a person in your past. But I just never en...more

This book was just ok. I think the author took the easy way out to get a happy ending. She should have took some risks. The story is a little farfetched to me. It's hard to believe that if you are that much in love with someone that you just give up and get engaged to someone else under a year later.

I picked this book up as just an escape from heavy reading. It wasn't a very deep, thought-provoking story, but I loved it just the same. Finished it in under 24 hours. I could completely identify with the characters and the theme of "What if..." and the path not taken. It would make a great beach read.

I wasn't sure if I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others because of the time in my life when I read it or if it just wasn't as good as the others I have read by this author. I think now that I have finished the book that it just didn't connect as well for me. Well-written.
Tamara
I generally like this author's books, so I was excited to pick this up at the library one day. From the beginning, I had a difficult time with the story. It just didn't hook me as her other books have. Sorry to say I finished it up so I could move on to another book.

The main character was so limp that I almost stopped reading the book. I read this book after thoroughly enjoying Henry's latest book Coming Up for Air. But this is one book I don't recommend.
Karen Hogan
A woman reunites with her college boyfriend who disappeared 25 years earlier, with dire consequences to her marriage. Wasn't the best book I've ever read, but worth finishing.
Sharon
A story of love - lost, remembered, recovered, misunderstood. An compelling story easily read and perfect for a day at the beach or in front of the fire on a cold day.

I really like Patti Callahan Henry's book and was dissapointed that I couldn't get into this one. I tried several times and it just wouldn't grab me.
Sally Knox
Good writing; but the plot is similar to other books by this author. Now a mature woman with a love interest from the past impacting on current life situation.
Heather
the story line is good but the writing style is way to flowery and overdone for me. I just kept wanting them to get to the point.
Emily Gleasure
The author's writing style is not that unique, but it was an enjoyable read and I was a bit surprised at the ending.
Jen
Not quite 5 starts, more like 4.5, but since it made me bawl my eyes out and I can't do halfs I'll go with 5 stars.

The beginning of this book contained a few spots where I rolled my eyes at some phrases or actions and a few points where it seemed cliche, but after the halfway point the author hit her stride and was brilliant in the way she pulled you in and twisted you all up emotionally with what the two main characters were going through.

Anyone who has a first, or former, love that left a hole...more

Suggested to me by my grandmother. Definitely a break from what I usually read. Good story overall.

This one was just okay - though I've loved some of her others. Too well telegraphed.
Laura
Elicits conflicting emotions. Not your typical predictable fairytale. A good read.
Kristin
I would have given this book 3-4 stars if it was 1/3 shorter, didn't have descriptions of emotions that made me vomit in my mouth a little and covered up some of its plot gaps.

I enjoyed this one. I could truly feel the raw emotion and pull coming out of the characters. At times it was physically painful to read.
Eileen
Didn't enjoy nearly as much as between the tides, however, an enjoyable read.
Heather
Very hard to get into after the first 75 pages still nothing, so I didn't finish.
Elissa
One of my all-time favorites! Read it 3 times! =]
Debbie
Local author. Not all that factual or accurate. Good story/light reading. She lost me when she said that she was watching a red breasted robin take a sunflower seed from the bird feeder out her window. Very wrong! Robins eat worms and bugs.
Jenny
Heartbreaker!! great Novel. Great Writer follow her...

Although this novel was painfully sad at times, it is my favorite of Henry's books.
