I listened to this book on audio in my car and loved it. The book consists of inspirational essays and nonfiction spiritual memoirs from the author's early writings. I specifically recommend it on audio for several reasons. It is read by the author, so you get a true sense of her voice with the inflection and emphasis she intended. It is perfect for short distance trips because you can listen to several complete entries without having to stop-and-go in the plot of a full-length novel, which ...more

Sue Monk Kidd is awesome. I love her fiction writings, and her nonfiction/theology is also wonderful. She addresses the issue of what it means to be female and Christian--what is unique and beautiful and important about that experience. Firstlight is a collection of her earliest writings (when she wrote for Guideposts). What makes her writings so beautiful is that they all touch on the small, subtle ways that God reveals Godself to her in her daily life, and her journey to discovering and redisc...more

I listened to this audio book while driving, as the short inspirational essays were perfect for short distances. Although a bit too theological for my taste, Sue Monk Kidd had interesting insights on life, family life in particular. Delivered in a southern accent, these essays reminded me of certain southern family values. While I loved The Secret Life of Bees, wonderful southern fiction, I don't think I would have much cared for this book had I read it rather than listened to it.

recommends it for: ANYONE!
This book was a delightful read. Each chapter covers a philosphical or religious concept. Ms. Kidd orginally wrote the essays in this book for GuidePost magazine. I marked my favorite passages to reread, and I almost NEVER do that.
I would recommend this book as a gift for anyone at any stage of life.

I loved this book of inspirational essays and nonfiction spiritual memoirs of Sue Kidd's life. Great for those with not much time to read. Pick it up, read an essay or two and leave it feeling great! Almost like a perfect little morning or evening devotional.

I picked this up because I love Sue Monk Kidd's later works and thought I might get some enjoyment out of reading a writer's earlier works, but it mainly focuses on her relationship with her husband, kids and God, none of which did much for me.

I love beautiful writers and I'm a sucker for anything that receives a starred review in PW. Sue Monk Kidd has a way of painting with her words, especially in this book. These were all stories that appeared in Guideposts.

If you liked the Secret Life of Bees and or The Mermaid Chair check out the early inspirational writings of Sue Monk Kidd. I like her honesty and humanness shown thru the pieces of revelation she shares throughout.

I loved this. The importance of story. The meaning in everyday. Stillness. A nice companion to "The Quotidian Mysteries" by Kathleen Norris (I keep track of all she writes!) Really beautiful and reflective.

While it is unapologetically a revisiting of her early work and as such lacks the complexity and depth of her recent novels, there are flashes of universal truth and powerful stories that are memorable.

I had a hard time motivating myself to finish this one. Sometimes the essays don't feel very connected around their theme. Her ideas were good; it just felt choppy overall. Disconnected and random.

Sue Monk Kidd is an excellent fictional writer, so I was surprised to find how many books she has on her spirtual journey. This one is excellent, simple and with much meaning for every day life.

My Grandmere gave me this and eventhough it's real cheesy I'm going to read it. Maybe not hte whole thing but at least some. That way when I go home I can tell her I read some.

Learned some about the writing process, made me look at the world in a new way. An inspirational piece, I read a short entry every morning with my breakfast.

I'm a skimmer. I don't want to be, but I am. I didn't skim this book. Assorted short writings that were grouped into a dozen or so chapters. Good read.

Her essays are autobiographical. They describe her journey as a writer and a participant in life searching for meaning.
