Every sport has rules. Running is no exception. If you’re curious, just visit the Web site of USA Track & Field, the sport’s governing body, where you’ll find detailed dictates on everything from disqualification to bib-number placement to the caliber of the starter’s pistol.

But what about the everyday rules of running? The unspoken ones that pertain to the lingo, behavio...more

Full of lingo and etiquette-I absolutely recommend this book to any runner...if you are new to running, you will learn a lot, if you are experienced, it will make you belly laugh. Though a bit silly at times, Mark Remy cracks me up! It inspired me to read "Once A Runner" (OAR) by Quentin Cassidy and "Daniels Running Formula" by none other than Jack Daniels, two books he strongly recommends. Oh and I liked learning how to do a proper "farmer's blow", what "Fa...more

Mark Remy is the executive editor of Runner's World magazine, which means he definitely knows his stuff. However, if you're searching for a comprehensive manual on running, The Runner's Rule Book is not that. Instead, it is a fun and funny series of "rules" that come with running as a noun (or as he technically notes, a gerund), as a lifestyle.

I read this book in under an hour. Each rule takes up one or two pages and is often no longer than two paragraphs. Some range fr...more

Basically this is a simple (as in "simpleton"), extended Runners World article; and poorly-written at that. Received it as a gift and blasted through the "rules" in a day. I guess I was looking for more meat to the rules but ended up giving the author a token and forced "ha-ha" page after page. Really it boils down to trying to put rules behind something that really can't have too many rules, because running is straightforward in execution but deep and complex in...more

Recommends it for: Runners Mostly, but there is good information for anyone

I loved this book. Ryan checked it out from the library about a year ago, but then when he ran the Boston Marathon in April 2011, Mark Remy was at the Runner's expo signing copies of the book so we bought it. And, I got around to it now, and I even for a beginner-off and on runner like me I think this book was informational. But, it wasn't just a dry etiquette book, Mark Remy presented it in an interesting, and sometimes even humorous manner.

Finished this book in a day. It is by no means a book for beginning runner's seeking serious training advice. It does contain some common sense/etiquette, but not the book you should be looking to for an idea of how to start.
This book is mean to be a funny, light read and it succeeds in doing just that. Can't tell you how many times I chuckled to myself while tearing through this book (read it in less than a day).

Meant to be read in snippets, this slim book contains thoughts, ideas, and tongue-in-cheek "rules" for runners and about running. If you don't care about running and have no interest in signing up for a race, you'll likely have no interest in this book. If you do sign up for a race, however, don't get beat by the guy in the costume.

I bought this book on a whim. I'd read excerpts of it in Runner's World, and I thought "what the heck" and clicked it.

It was cute and a fast little read since it was little tid bits and charts and diagrams. I laughed a little. I'll probably loan it to a runner friend of mine.

It wasn't life altering, but it was a fun read. I really enjoyed it.

Not as funny as the book Ultimate: The Greatest Sport Ever Invented By Man, but in the same vein. It did make me smile a few times. It made me want to run. It was a quick read and it has diagrams of the farmer's blow. Just fine for beginning runners and for runners who have been at it for years. I think I should go run now.

This is not a novel, more of a funny inside look into the running world. It gives some great tips for both beginning runners and those who are more seasoned. Great for runners and those who want to understand their humor.

This would make a great gift for a runner. The author's tone is chatty, witty, and humble. A good mix of "rules" that will make any runner nod knowingly, laugh in recognition, or consider their own practice of running in a new way.

Quite a hilarious - and often very clever - tongue-in-cheek compendium of the minutiae that is the running lifestyle. I saw my own humor-style in several snippets of the writing. Every runner seems to now own this book. The format is highly adaptable for other niche activities and has actually given me some good ideas...

Great short little read mixing humor and real tips for being a runner and participating in races. Don't expect too much substance...this one takes about an hour to devour.

I LOVE this book! I definitely need a copy for my coffee table. However, I fear it'll only be appreciated by other runners. No...I know it. :)
Jim Collison
Hilarious. Awesome. Also, loads of great information for runners of all types (and presented in a delightfully non-serious manner).

Witty and fun...if you didn't find yourself snickering at least a little, then you take yourself far too seriously as a runner!
Photina
I thought this book was funny through to the end. It gave a lot of fun, helpful advice for runners and was well written.

Easy read, full of incredibly useful tips for running etiquette, and very funny! This is the Miss Manners of running.

Entertaining, and will get you to chuckle while you read it....even non-runners will get some of the jokes.

I received this as a Christmas gift from a fellow runner friend of mine -- a cute, lighthearted, and humorous look at the unspoken "rules" we all follow.

Though most of the stuff is intuitive, everyone should know it, a lot of it "duh" material, the humor and few bits of advice I hadn't thought of made it a great read. Also an extremely quick read.

Meh. Not even sure why I read this, considering I'm as much as runner as Paris Hilton is a Rhodes Scholar. Amusing at times, but I'm still wondering why I read this. I'm harboring some idiotic fantasy about running a marathon someday; this book kind of threw cold water at that fantasy.
