I liked the layout of the book, small stand alone chapters that are one or two pages long. The chapters where for the most part interesting; however, I did not like the chapters where he was talking with Tree. Conversations with Tree in reality where conversations with himself. Those conversations tended to be more philosophical, less social and, to me, less interesting.
Not a great read, but a good look at a personal transformation while on the AT. The main disappointment were the entries with Tree. Mixing philosophy/theology discussions with an imaginary "Tree" drew away from the real world of people that Mr. Welch seemed to care about. A little less of the Tree and a little more of the people would have gone a long way.
