Sixth in this series.

It was just a matter of time: Inspector Thomas Pitt, using his street savvy and superior skills of discernment, and his talented wife Charlotte, using her connections to the gentry and superior skills of discernment, have in earlier volumes solved cases of serial killings, murder of female prostitutes, and pornography rings in Victorian London. In this contribution to the well crafted and eloquently written series, author Anne Perry turns to a taboo topic for t More...

The darkest so far of the Pitt mystery series, Bluegate Fields is Anne Perry’s sixth mystery in the Thomas Pitt series, and named for one of the worst slums in nineteenth-century London.

The naked body of a sixteen year old boy is found in a channel of the sewers, drowned, defiled, and in the first stages of syphilis. Judging by his smooth skin and the contents of his stomach, he is from a moneyed family. Evidence suggests he was drowned elsewhere. When Pitt is called in to solve the More...

The setting and basic premise of this book is the same: Inspector Pitt investigates from the police side and his wife, Charlotte, "snoops" from the Society side. What I liked about this one is that it's more plausable than usual how Charlotte helps the case. Sometimes it seems like she just hangs around and blindly stumbles into the answer/resolution. Another thing I personally like about this book is that the majority of the characters were not Society characters. Perry's Society More...

This is the sixth novel in the series and Inspector Pitt has to deal with the naked body of a young gentleman found in the sewers in a very bad part of town. The trail leads him into a web of deceit involving homosexual prostitution -- quite a different matter among Society than the usual sort of prostitution -- and accusations leveled against the tutor of the deceased, who is tried and condemned to hang. With Charlotte's help in the drawing rooms, Pitt must try to sort out who did what to whom More...

When the naked body of a young boy of good family appears in the sewers of Bluegate Field, Thomas Pitt has the task of finding out where and why the boy was killed. The crime is a despicable one and the upper class close ranks to hide the scandal. When an innocent, but unpleasant man is arrested for the crime, Pitt has to battle with his superiors and his conscience and is in danger of losing his position.

This is one of the better mysteries of this series. Anne Perry takes us into More...

I kept reminding myself of the time period and to remember that the characters didn't have the cynicism of our times as to why the true villain kept escaping notice.

This particular story presented a very good perspective on how society interacted: the vices overlooked, the allowances permitted, the judgments made upon people depending upon their class.

We also see the further development of Charlotte's relationship with Vespasia and introspection on Charlotte's part as to the More...

Bluegate Fields go a bit deeper in the Victorian underworld than most of Charlotte and Pitt's stories. Unlike the previous story where Charlotte and her family took center stage, in this one it is Pitt, his boss and his young colleague who are the primary investigators. Charlotte is still a much needed figure though as she is the only one who can find the answers needed in society's salons.

The story opens with a body being found in the sewers. Called to the occurrence Pitt even More...

Had to stop listening when it got into male prostitution, cant stomach it, though it is well written and she is an amazing story teller. The book is about a boy being molested and found dead and she does have to dive into the perps back ground, I just thought it was yucky, she never takes you to the moment, but like Law and Order SVU, you go through the investigation.

I think this is my least favorite Charlotte/thomasPitt book. I find the crime depressing, the fact that the wrong guy is convicted and sentenced to death depressing, and the wrap-up too pat. There wasn't enough time spent on why Esmond, why the shooting, and what happened after.

Not for the faint hearted. Blackmail, child sexual abuse, and a look at the sex trade in Victorian England. Detective Pitt and his wife always offer a good read and this one is no exception.

This did not have the usual push and mystery that Anne Perry is so famous for. It did reveal more seedy information of the Victorian area which tragicly still goes on today.

Pretty tricky. This was my favorite ending of hers yet. I also was surprised by the plot structure (not wanting to spoil anything, but, a trial in the middle of the book??)

I liked this book more than some of the previous because it spent more time with Pitt investigating the murder and not just the numerous odd social meetings.

Not my favorite in the Pitt series, maybe because I figured out who did it before Charlotte or Thomas did or because of the subject matter, but still an interesting, very well-researched look at Victorian society.

An unsavory topic--child prostitution. But because it's set in the late 1800's, it's handled very delicately.

What kept me reading this one was whether or not Thomas and Charlotte were going to be able to solve a crime of which an innocent man had been accused and convicted and sentenced to be hanged. They do ultimately come to know who the killer is, but lack the evidence to prove it. In the mean time, someone else kills the killer. The victory in this one is that Thomas and Charlotte together are able to prove the first man's innocence and save him from the gallows. My frustration comes from the f More...

Like all Anne Perry's books, this is very well-written and convincing. Her descriptions are compelling and "life-like" - even the corpses. She really knows how to put you off your tuna melt, so it may be best not to read this over lunch!

Another episode in the Charlotte & Thomas Pitt series -- this book seemed to capture a bit of the frustration of working a case that seems likely to be shelved by superiors, yet Thomas goes out on a limb to solve it and risk his own career. Rather nasty topic of child abuse by a family member that is attempted to be covered to avoid family scandal -- I found it a bit harder to enjoy this particular book in the series. Looking forward to the next. I enjoy listening to this series on audio.

Vraiment prenant.

This was an okay listen. Mostly I finished it because it's narrated by one of my favorite narrators, Davina Porter. I am not as fond of the Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series as I am of Anne Perry's other.

This is another great mystery from Anne Perry! I liked how there is a 2nd story line involving the women of society to abolish child prostitution.
