A fascinating collection of views of the Lake District and surrounding areas from days of yore. Francis Frith travelled everywhere, including seemingly inaccessible places, to photograph some stunning views of this lovely part of the country. There is a short but informative introduction that tells about Frith and his company and it is no surprise to see that contemporaneously the Financial Times called his archive, of thousands of views of England, "a unique and priceless record of English life ...more

Francis Frith founded his photographic views publishing company in Reigate, Surrey, in 1859, prior to his third and final photographic tour of the Middle East in the summer of that year. Through his own enterprise, Frith became wealthy at a comparatively young age and decided to combine business with pleasure.
