The Gentlemen's Alliance seems like a pretty typical shojo. Girl (Haine) love/obsessed with a boy (the 'Emperor' who's name I can't remember) who was nice to her on various occasions in her past, rich kid high school with a hieracy and conspiracy, and a cast of supporting roles. Somehow, however, there's small nodes of hilarity, emotion, and truth in this very light-hearted manga.
I've been meaning to check out this series for a while now, and picked up the first one on a whim to be honest. More...

I have read this manga ages ago and truthfully I only remember it vaguely. Arina Tanemura drawings are beautiful, but sometimes it is quite hard to recognize who is who because they all look the same; the only difference between the characters is their hairstyles. Of course many mangakas have this problem but it is still hard to get into the story when the characters are all identical in appearance.

Now if we talk about the story, it is just another typical shojo manga. There is some More...

When I first received this book, I wasn't sure what to think. I won this copy in a raffle at an English edition release of one of the author's other series. With a little bit of trepidation because it is listed as a shoujo and looked to be a possible romance, which I don't really care for typically, I began reading my signed copy. Before I knew what had occurred, a couple hours had passed before I finished the book. What amazed me most was how long it took me to read the story. Normally a manga More...

Honestly, it depends. It depends completely on what type of story you gravitate towards, and while I did thoroughly admire Arina's art and some other things, I can't say this type of story is mine (though it may be yours). Shinshi Doumei Cross is a typical sugary, unapologetically cliche, shoujo manga with a rather overused type of heroine. I felt Arina tried too hard to portray Haine as a strong girl with a sensitive/romantic side - it just came off as annoying in the end, though she IS better More...

I really like Arina Tanemuras works, and this is no exception. The art is lovely and colorful, and the characters are interesting and likable. However, I don't think this is Tanemuras best series.

Haine is a fairly tolerable shojo heroine, even if her constant talking about Shizumasa can be annoying and tiering at times. Some of the other characters are also given more character development than her, which I think is sad because it feels like much of the potential Haine got is wasted.

Honestly, I didn't like it that much myself, but for those who find incredibly convoluted manga plotlines appealing (and when we're talking about manga series, which can sometimes be very drawn-out, there is actually an audience for this)this will have a lot of drama and twists to keep them hooked.

Follow this plot if you dare...Haine, the heroine, was coldly sold by her father into adoption to another family. This spurs her into a career of infamy as a yanki (juvenile delinquent) unt More...

omfg this is one of meh fav book series!! <3 =^.^= (Tanemura-sempai sugoy!) (ok, spoilers ppl, watch out)
anyway, this book series (or book) is basically about Haine and her parents sold her when she was little. She got so upset she joined a gang organization, the Yankees. the only thing that could bring her into the light was this book written by shizumasa. anyway, one night she was escaping from the police, and she climbed into this girls's room. she too was unloved, so haine soon beca More...

When the first two lines are "My name is Haine Otomiya. I'm a cheerful 15-year-old!!", it sounds like a bad joke. It's the quintessential shojo manga heroine, right? And a lot of standard manga ploys are here, a heroine who is adopted by a powerful family with money troubles, therefore she has to work multiple jobs, plus she's a former yanki (juvenile gangster) who harbors a passionate love for a distant and powerful boy who unknowingly turned her life around. Of course now they are at More...

One of my favorite shojo manga series. I read the whole series about five times and it made me cry every time. I love the art and Haine(even though she is clichéd) and the whole story. I think Arina Tanemura is one of the best mangaka out there, even though I know many would disagree. But I love me my romantic,dramatic,beautifully-drawn,cliché manga every now and then.So sue me.
I think Arina Tanemura is able to convey feelings with her art and its these feeling that make me love her manga More...

For the record, I own all eleven volumes, but I'll type my review for the whole series here. Not sure if I'll add all volumes yet, but at any rate, SPOILERS AHEAD (I did hide them, though). I'll also refer to the series as Shinshi, as its Japanese title is Shinshi Doumei Cross, which is how I came to know the series.

So, five stars after rereading the whole series in one day (previously, I read each volume as it came out). Perhaps I should start by stating I'm a big fan of Arina Tanem More...

I'm giving this two stars even though I didn't finish it because based on the plot summary I read, I think there is an audience that would enjoy this series. It just didn't happen to be me. From the very first page, I felt like I'd gotten dropped into a series halfway through. I could't figure out what was going on or who anyone was. The art style, where the difference between characters can be as subtle as the way a ribbon is tied, didn't help. The pages are too crowded, there is too much g More...

[Series Length: 9 volumes / Read: volumes 1-3]

Believe it or not, this might be the only title by Arina Tanemura that I can tolerate. That being said, I've come to realize that her books simply are not targeted for folks like me.

Much like Tanemura's "Full Moon O Sagashite" series, this manga tries to immediately set up a sympathetic female protagonist without offering much to like about her personality. But instead of a terminally ill girl who wants to become a More...

Synopsis: Written and drawn by Arina Tanemura, Gentleman's Alliance follows 15-year old Haine Otomiya as she starts high school at the exclusive Imperial Academy. Haine has been in love with Shizumasa Togu since she read the fairy tale he wrote as a child. However, he is now the Emperor (top student) at the Academy, and almost impossible to see if you aren't a Silver (second tier student) or on the student council. Haine is only a bronze, and rumor has it the Emperor alrea More...

Sort of a cute series, I suppose. I wasn't blown away by the storyline or anything, so I might give it until book two to make a definite decision. I didn't hate it, but it didn't have any characters that I could totally fall in love with. I'm starting to see that when it comes to manga, the characters are really what make it for me. We'll see how it goes.

I want to be in a school like this. But, This story to me seemed like every other shojou manga out there a girl look ing for a guy but the guy pushes her away but she is determined to get him. With that said I loved the characters they were so funny, if I had to recommend this I would recommend it to a first time shojou manga reader.

I really like Haine, she's always in high hopes and cheerful. But she's in love with the president in the student government of her school... and he's kind of untouchable. She fell for him through a memory she had shared with him when she was younger... seems kind of unrealiztic but i'm rooting for her. Haine gets nominated to be one of the candiates for the student government and she gets accepted in.. which is extremly unusual.

The Gentlemen's Alliance cross, Vol. 1 is a great book. Its about this girl name Haine. She was sold for 50 million yen to cover a business loan. She now goes to this elite school and is in the student council and is trying to find out more about the other student council members. Haine struggles to find her place in the student council.

I love Arina Tanemura's art! She has awesome drawing skills.

Anyway, I haven't finished The Gentlemen's Alliance Cross, so I might edit this review in the future. But so far, it's a good 3-stars.

It's terrifically original!!

This book is really good! The girl who loves the emperor and gets to be his bodyguard...there were a few things that bothered me. The Emperor seems INCREDIBLY self-centered, but I'm hoping Haine can change him. And there is ****SPOILER!!!!**** .........a gay person in there. Aha. This manga will get interesting ;DD

I really liked this series there's only a few small things I found to even criticize. Arina Tanemura did a really good job on this one. Just when you think you know what is going on it shows just a bit more truth and all of them go together without contradicting eachother. The end was interesting though..

So far, so good. I was kinda surprised to find out that he was gay.. only to find out later, that he's really not gay..

I like how the main character is able to stand up for herself and defend herself instead of being a damsel in distress.

Hmm, different from Arina Tanemura's usual style. Not bad, but there are too many characters to keep up with. And it's really that Haine was sold away to another family because her father hated her and needed money.

Review in 75 Words or Less: Being familiar with Tanemura's previous works, I was very excited to start this series. The Gentleman's Alliance Cross was almost everything I had hoped for. The premise is interesting.. the characters were fun and hilarious, but I had a really hard time following the plot at times. While the overall plot stays on a main focus, the chapter's scenes seem to jump around a lot. Giving the reader almost a discombobulating experience.
