I admit to being skeptical about this one due to the really bad reviews on here, but it was a free download on my Kindle so I gave it a shot.

It started out well, totally hooked me in the story, even though the plot was a tad bit hokie. Charlotte Fallon's courtesan sister, Deborah, convinces her to be the one to tell her protector, Sir Michael a/k/a Bay that she's running off to get married. Charlotte seems to be a sucker for her sister and can't seem to say the word no. So she stays, gets drunk...more

3 ½ stars.

I find it really hard to rate this book mainly because I got it for free on Kindle. If I paid for it, I’ll give it a 2 stars because I would want my money back (not worst $9), but since it was free, I guilt myself into giving it a 3 ½ stars.

Pros: It was an addictive, entertaining, trashy story
Cons: Hero was not charming, Heroine was kind of stupid and annoying, and they were not likable. They had no chemistry except for when they’re in bed; the sex were not steamy, it’s all about quan...more

Mistress by Mistake was a fun book to read. Although the plot was a comedy of errors in many ways, there were glimpses into some serious aspects of life at the time -- the treatment of women, the severe punishment for thievery and the vast gaps between the classes. I liked how the heroine accepted some of her regrets in life and also had an understanding and forgiving heart to those in her family and life who had really betrayed her. She managed to survive and actually build a life for herself a...more

Once I got past most of the graphic sex (which is mostly in the first third of the book and I suppose is necessary to the story), I loved this book cuz the story rocks. Kept me interested to the last page. The characters are very well-written, quite dimensional. They stick with you, haunt you actually. Which was fortunate, because it took me a while to finish (due to my life, not the book's fault). I was literally able to pick up where I left off with no re-reads, due to the memorable story line...more

This book really wasn't that great. It was a story that started out promising and just went downhill from there.

The heroine comes down to London because of an urgent note from her courtesan sister and is asked by said sister to let her new protector down easy for her since she has decided to marry and can't stay to tell him herself. The heroine falls asleep and wakes up making love to the hero. Not bad, I can get with that. What annoyed me was the fact that the heroine was just annoying. She wa...more

This book started out seeming like silly fun. Unfortunately it turned out that "silly" was its high point and it went downhill from there.

The biggest drawback for me was the heroine. I honestly don't think she had one redeeming quality and I disliked virtually every instant she appeared in the book. She manages to be simultaneously wishy-washy and ridiculously stubborn, she's dishonest (especially with herself) and she doesn't even come through when the hero is in trouble, being too busy with se...more

When the hero and heroine hook up early and muse to themselves about how they feel like they've come "home"/"want something more"/"feel the wall around his/her heart start to crumble" it means only one thing.

Incoming external conflict.

I admit it; I only read half the book, but the twitches started early. By the fourth twitch, I continued the movement and exited to my library. Maybe it got better, but I doubt it.

The premise was solid - Charlotte Fallon's unscrupulous sister accepted Sir Michael B...more

The book was much better than I have expected. With it's low rating and not a lot of good reviews, I was a little worried about it. I got if off at half-price-books for really cheap during their holiday sales. Actually, I got book 1-3 in excellent condition! Not to mention, the artwork is amazing and super alluring! And, I believed, I am quite happy about the story. Charlie, despite her swooning, is definitely one of my favorite character. She's not entire the strongest heroine that I have read,...more

This book surprised me. I didn't think I was going to like it. It had a rough start in the beginning. I'm not sure if it was the author getting her bearings or not.

The story is about Charlotte, a woman who goes to London at the request of her sister, Deborah, a courtesan. Deb decides to get married and asks Charlotte to stay and inform Bay, the man who has employed her at a very high price as a courtesan, that she is getting married.

When Bay arrives at his home, he is anxious to ravish Deb, who...more

This was one of those books that is a totally fluffy diversion. The characters are fun, especially Charlotte who doesn't bother to reign in her temper on the best of days, and the plot is just full of ridiculous amounts of sexy silliness. I mean that in a good way.

Although the initial plot borders on implausible (much-sought after mistress cons her older, repressed sister into taking her place in her soon-to-be lover's bed so she can run off and get married), the roller coaster of emotions that...more

I have to say that I loved this book. It was such an enjoyable read and I felt that Charlotte and Bay were perfect for each other. I was a little skeptical at first because it was one of those stories where one sister is exchanged for the other and I usually hate those stories because it makes them seem replaceable. But here, Bay has not even had a chance to start a serious relationship with Deborah whom he was only paying for her position as his mistress. But Charlotte is not there as his mistr...more

I wasn't certain what to expect with Mistress by Mistake: debut author; trade paperback release (which is always a toss-up with a debut author because what if the book is terrible?) Once I started reading, however, I wondered what I'd been so worried about.

This historical has it all: humor, hot sex, endearing characters and yes, a little bit of crazy.

Let's start first with Charlotte "Charlie" Fallon, an on-the-shelf spinster from Little Hyssop who gardens, tats, and feeds feral cats. When her s...more

Charlotte regrets the mistake she made when she was younger and has been happy living a sheltered spinsters life in a small village ever since. Her sister Deborah couldn't be more different and is one of London's most renowned courtesans. When Deborah contacts her saying she's in trouble Charlotte is quick to rush to her aid. Deborah has recently become the mistress of Sir Michael Bayard (Bay) but has been offered marriage by someone else and needs to leave. Bay has been called away and Deborah...more

3.5 Stars. This book starts quickly, Charlotte or Charlie is with her sister Deborah in Bayard's home. Deborah is Bayard's mistress and has decided to run off and get married (while taking everything Bayard bought for her of course). Charlie is to wait for Bayard's return and break the news to him. She has done this before and is weary of the situation so she decides to have a drink and ends up falling asleep in Deborah's bed. She wakes up to find that Bayard has returned and has confused her wi...more

3 1/2 *

I would call this a light romantica only because of the use of modern terms for body parts (cock, clit ect.) and there is some light bondage.

Charlotte or Charlie as she's called (h) is called by her younger sister Deborah to help her out of a tight spot. Deb had agreed to be Bay's(H) mistress and after he set her up in a house on Jane street (a notorious street where mistress' are kept) she decides to get married to someone else. Deb wants Charlie to stay at the house and explain it to Ba...more

Sir Michael Bayard arrives at his new mistress' house in the middle of the night. He has been drinking but he still climbs into bed and has his way with his mistress. She slept through it as she also had had a few drinks and was thinking it was just a dream. In the morning they are both surprised as this is not the mistress, but her sister. Bay is upset since he had spent a lot of money on the mistress for new clothes and had also sent (on loan) a very expensive family heirloom that was now miss...more

2.5* Two stars on goodreads means it was "OK." So this book was better than OK, but not quite to the "I liked it" stage for me. The story is basically absurd and convoluted. I did come to enjoy the two main characters, Charlotte and Bay, which is why it didn't get a worse rating than 2.5*. The near virginal, prim miss who becomes an impassioned, multi-orgasmic lover when the hero touches her was too unbelievable to make anything else in the story work. I don't read many historical romances, beca...more

I don't know how to express how truly wonderful this book is. The hero, Bay and the heroine Charlotte are fantastic!

I loved their interaction, the plot, even the crazy stalking female had me on pins and needles so I COULD NOT put down the book.

I don't normally buy trades because of price. This one I intend to get a physical book and the ebook.

I'm not a patient person, so I'm moping over the fact I have to wait for the next book in the series. And the series is about these women ("mistresses")...more

A bit witty but a bit to long.... This would have worked a bit more for me had it been 50 pages shorter.

I loved Bay's name and I really enjoyed him as a hero.
His ex wife was really great at being mad and I wish we could have seen more into her character.

Charlotte had all sorts of problems as far as I can see she was a dim wit and really irked me.

The h/h had great chemistry in bed and in the end I loved the time the spent together in the Country.

I thing this story had great bones I just wis...more

Overall, I enjoyed the book although there were some things that disturbed me.
1-Conveniently not telling Charlie she was not "obligated" to fulfill her sister's contract.
2-The torture & rape of one of the main characters with no repercussions to the villain.
3-The villain was allowed to have her own happily ever after.

Although I found Bay rather annoying in the beginning, I felt he became charming towards the end.
I know the book is completely improbable, but that's why I read.

Actually 3.5 stars. Debut novels and free books are sometimes not what they could be, plus the negative reviews didn't expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I enjoyed both the main characters -- neither were TSTL; the plot twist was a little off the beaten path making it interesting. I was able to overlook the anachronisms with no problem. I liked the Jane Street "neighborhood" , the stories to tell there could be great.

This was my first Maggie Robinson but I wouldn't avoid her books in t...more

Well, the second read through of this book was more satisfying than the first. There were things I remembered and things I missed. Of course I knew who the crazy was but even on the second read through, I still cringed at the way she acted.

Charlotte "Charlie" Fallon has rushed to London, afraid that her baby sister has taken ill. Wrong. Her sister Deborah, the most sought after courtesan in all of London, has decided to run away with the third son...more

1.5 - 2.5 stars

This book disappointed on several accounts, not least of which was that I was expecting a historical romance but ended up with historical erotica. I am by no means prudish when it comes to my reading tastes but I was in the mood for a nice, historical romance, something I had not been in the mood for for a while, and to end up with historical erotica was a bit shocking and dismaying. I had not read such in several weeks and the cruder language and frequency of graphic sex scenes t...more

Free Kindle Charlotte Fallon and Sir Michael Bayard's story.

I don't mean to mean but I didn't care for the writing structure. Maybe it was just my formatting on Kindle I don't know. Usually when there is a break in time, there is a literal space or a chapter change. I was constantly confused when one moment the character was thinking something and then the very next line, she/he is doing exactly what they were just thinking. For instance, one moment she was thinking about cutting out and steali...more

No one tells a story quite like Maggie Robinson (aka Margaret Rowe). Her involving, exquisitely erotic romances are filled with perfectly imperfect people who behave badly. That's all right--after you spend some time with her characters, you wouldn't want them to behave any other way! "Mistress by Mistake" is the first book in the "Courtesan Court" series, and it introduces us to the ladies of Jane Street. These ladies, known as "The Janes" are not merely beautiful women. They are the mistresses...more

First I'd like to say that this perhaps more is a spicy historical romance, cos these two do spend a lot of time in bed, or in other places.

In this story Charlotte is left behind by her courtesan sister. The sister was supposed to be Sir Michael Bayard's new mistress but she got married and left Charlotte to explain. Bay comes home and finds a woman in his bed, and cos of some missing jewels she stays in his house.

Ok, first I must say that I liked her writing, and the story was good, and sure a...more

Maggie Robinson is a former teacher, library clerk and mother of four who woke up in the middle of the night, absolutely compelled to create the perfect man and use as many adverbs as possible doing so. A transplanted New Yorker, she lives with her not-quite perfect husband in Maine, where the cold winters are ideal for staying inside and writing hot historical romances.

She also writes erotic his...more
