A rather intimate look at the New York School of Poetry — a close-knit group of post-World War II poets comprised principally of John Ashbery, Frank O'Hara, Kenneth Koch, and James Schuyler. The book contains many samples of their poetry to support Lehman's observations, and a collection of photographs of the poets and their friends. Though I usually struggle to find any meaning in a lot of poetry, or to understand others' analyses of it, Lehman's portrayal of the environment in which they opera

This book got me excited about contemporary poetry and introduced me to John Ashbery and Frank O'Hara. This book does a great job of setting up the attraction of the New York School and strikes a nice balance between discussions of biography and art.
