"How to be a Pirate" (How 2) by Cressida Cowell are hilarious memoirs with crude black stick illustrations, from when Hiccup, Viking heir to Hairy Hooligan tribe, was a skinny freckled 11ish. The story is about Hiccup and his friends getting taught how to be a pirate. Then they docked an island and started digging and found coffin and in it there is gold and a sword. They take out the sword. Then bad things start to happen like dragons start to attack and a lot of other stuff. At the end Hiccup finds a note and reads it and it said the treasure is yours. I loved the book and i can't wait for the third book.

This is another book that was recommended to me by my son. I found the hero, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, to be very likable and funny. He is an unlikely viking, scrawny and uncoordinated, who is forced to take pirate lessons from "Gobber-the-Belch," another member of his tribe. Luckily Hiccup has a sympathetic best friend named Fishlegs and a small pet dragon named Toothless to see him through his adventures. Normally a children's book would be less violent but after listening to Httyd audio book, I was curious on this one. Listening to the audio book wasted no time than several days of reading by myself. I almost pitied Hiccup because all the things that Gobber was teaching was horrible and all of this was a disadvantage because of his small stature. This book is the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon. The story starts during a Sword-fighting-at-Sea lesson during a storm. Hiccup attempts to fight with Dogsbreath the Duhbrian, but ends up losing the fight and is almost killed. But the fight is cut off as the wave tips the boat over and is holed by an object. I liked this book; filled with funny drawings and situations, this book was very enjoyable. The stranger, Alvin, claims he has a map to the pirate's treasure and a riddle key that reveals the true heir to the Viking clan will find the treasure on Skullion Isla...more This is a synopsis, not a review.

Hiccup, the hero of How to Train Your Dragon, is training to be a pirate. Like most other physical activities, he is horrible compared to the other Vikings. When the casket of Grimbeard the Ghastly, Hiccup's famous pirate ancestor, washes ashore, the Vikings find a smooth-talking stranger inside. The stranger, Alvin, claims he has a map to the pirate's treasure and a riddle key that reveals the true heir to the Viking clan will find the treasure on Skullion Island.

Despite Hiccup's protests, the Vikings follow Alvin to the island to find the treasure. Hiccup's cousin and rival for the future leadership of the clan finds the treasure, but a booby trap awakens the sleeping Skullions who immediately attempt to devour the Viking party. Hiccup is saved by his father, Stoic the Vast, who claims the treasure for himself.

On the way home, Alvin and his band of Outcasts attack the Vikings to steal the treasure. Hiccup's dragon, Toothless, distracts the Outcasts long enough for the Vikings to escape and fight back. During the battle, the Viking ship burns and Hiccup, his friend Fishlegs, and Alvin are dragged to the bottom of the see beneath the upturned ship.

Toothless manages to find a cave they can swim to. Inside they find a door with a message from the pirate stating they have found his true treasure, but only his heir can open the door safely. Alvin forces Hiccup to open the door where they find a mountain of pirate booty. Alvin immediately tries to kill Hiccup.

To Hiccup's amazement, he discovers during the battle that he is left-handed and is really a competent swordsman. He is not able to defeat Alvin, but their battle awakens a monster left to guard the treasure. The monster eats Alvin, but Hiccup tricks it into poisoning itself.

Hiccup and Fishlegs find a note from Grimbeard saying the treasure was a bane to his band of pirates. He hid it in the cave in the hopes that someday, when people were ready for it, one of his descendents will find it. Hiccup chooses to leave the treasure, even though it means his cousin may be named heir to the tribe.

Hiccup, Toothless and Fishlegs return to a heroes' welcome, since the tribe had believed they were dead. (less)

BUKU KEDUA KONYOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahaaa.. ilustrasinya juga lucu-lucu. Selain itu petualangannya lebih mendebarkan dan juga keberanian Hiccup yang perlahan-lahan mulai muncul dan berkembang, bahkan Fishlegs (teman Hiccup yang lemah dan juling) mulai menunjukkan bahwa dia adalah seorang Viking. Toothless juga mulai berkembang, tapi tetap sajaaaaa… cerewet dan pemalas, haha…. Bahkan Stoik Agung menunjukkan kasih orang tua sepanjang masa dan mengalahkan nafsu untuk memiliki harta dan jabatan ;’)
Ceritanya emang keren, namun kurang cocok kalau dibaca anak-anak, ratingnya R! karena banyak kata-kata bangsa Viking dan adegan-adegan bajak laut yang kurang mendidik (saya serius looo). Saya penasaran dengan pelajaran Hinaan Tingkat Tinggi, mungkin saya bisa menjadi No.1 dikelas ini (hahahaaa…. Gak ah, bercanda). Pelajarannya sungguh konyol dan aneh. Omong-omong tentang harta karun, ditemukan peti harta karun milik Grimbeard the Ghastly, bajak laut paling terkenal, yang juga merupakan leluhur dari Hiccup. Tanpa diduga, di dalam peti itu ternyata berisi seorang manusia bernama Alvin. Selain itu, Alvin pun ternyata menuntun Suku Hooligan untuk mencari harta karun peninggalan Grimbeard di Pulau Tengkorak. Nah, disinilah masalah dan petualangan Hiccup dimulai. Bagaimana harta karun itu disembunyikan oleh Grimbeard, dan sang penjaga yang merupakan monster yang harus dikalahkan Hiccup.

Pada akhirnya, muncul istilah: "Kau tidak selalu harus menjadi pahlawan untuk mendapat Sambutan Selamat Datang Untuk Pahlawan". dan kita bisa belajar dari sikap rendah hati Hiccup yang tidak pernah ingin jadi pahlawan. Walaupun takdir mengatakan lain, bahwa di masa tuanya ia tetap menjadi Pahlawan Besar bangsa Viking.

Jadi, kalau kau ingin tahu seperti apa kehidupan bajak laut. Atau kau ingin belajar rendah hati seperti Hiccup. Atau kau ingin belajar bahasa naga. Buku ini lah jawabannya, jangan lupa juga kenalan dengan Toothless, si naga ompong peliharaan Hiccup yang kocak, dan gak-naga-banget.

Quick, easy, light and fun. Definitely a dearth of female characters (good or bad) but still entertaining and enjoyable. I like these books almost as much as Percy Jackson and I actualy think they are better than the movie. Just like Percy Jackson, the movie was made to be "older" I think and just isn't the same great young kid's story with good morals. Also, the movie storyline isn't as well thought out. This story continues Hiccup's journey and training to become a viking by learning the art of swordfighting on the high seas. A mysterious stranger appears in a mysterious coffin with news of a long lost treasure and convinces the Hairy Hooligan tribe to set out on a dangerous quest to uncover it.

Hiccup makes a surprising choice at the end of the book, deciding that it is better to be a good leader than a hero - how profound is that?

I find myself liking this series more than I expected. Like the first book, it's got characters with ridiculous names like Baggybum and Snotlout and Dogsbreath. Bodily noises and boogers and belches abound. So yeah, totally a book for Boys of a Certain Age (and dads like me who remember being that age).

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is quite a guy. He's a Viking with a dragon who is next in line to lead his tribe, but he can't sword fight, he gets teased and bullied and he ends up last in many things that come his way. After listening to Book #1, my kids begged me to get the audio of this to listen to while coming and going from swimming lessons. How to Be a Pirate by Cressida Cowell is a thrilling book that will keep you reading until the end. I gave this book a ten out of ten. This book is about Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. He is now learning how to swordfight at sea. He really thinks that he will be good at it, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. When they find the coffin of Grimbeard the Ghastly, everything changes.
