A gorgeous book consisting mostly of photographs of Gothic cathedral vaults, ranging from the more famous cathedrals (e.g., the Pantheon in Rome, Westminster Abbey in London, Chartres Cathedral in Northern France) and lesser-knows cathedrals (e.g., Lincoln Cathedral in England, and the Cathedral of Sainte-Cécile in Albi, France). Heavenly Vaults: From Romanesque to Gothic in European Architecture by David Stephenson takes you on a journey through medieval churches, basilicas and cathedrals in England, France, Spain, Italy, and other European countries.

A lovely coffee table book full of pictures of ceilings of Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals. Very lovely, but after a while they all start to look the same.

Also, the last section is called "Gothic Vaults: The Geometry of Transcendence." I was hoping that there would be a discussion of the mathematics involved in crating these sturctures, but saldly there was not. This probably won't bother you, but there it is.
Beautiful large photographs of the vaults of inspiring romanesque and gothic churches in many European countries; 30 page essay at the end. It would make a great coffee table book.
