When a bug sleeping on a jug is chased by a frog, he has to jump to get away. But then that frog (who’s sleeping on a log) is in for a similar surprise! He’s attacked by a cat…who needs to jump away from a dog…and on it goes, until not even a shark is free from getting a little fright! Building on repetition that’s fun to read and fun to listen to, Jump! is a rip-roaring,...more

A good children’s librarian is never satisfied. Never content with his or her lot. It doesn’t matter how many great read aloud picture books we’ve culled for our storytimes. Like Captain Ahab we’re on the search for “the one”. That great picture book that’ll leave ‘em dead in the aisles (not literally . . . that would be a bit dark). We prowl the ALA Conventions, hunt the bookstore shelves, and sniff through professional journals never stopping, never ceasing. Our work is never done. In the cour...more

Jump! is an amazingly fun read-aloud book that had my three-year-old rolling on the ground with laughter! Starting with a bug, "a snug little bug...sleeping on a jug" who sees a frog and has to...Jump! to get away the author/illustrator follows a possible food chain up the ladder until it can't go any higher. The text is fun and full of rhyming words sure to catch the attention of most children. The brightly colored illustrations are incredibly eye-catching against the stark whiteness of the pag...more

I liked this book. JUMP! is about a variety of things that keep happening to certain animals. It has a lot of repetition in it, and a lot of rhyming, which I think is very important for students at a young age to have in their books. It will help keep them focused and entertained. This book also has a variety of pictures that will make the children really enjoy what they are reading. This book is definitely written for younger elementary students. I would use this book in my field if my class wa...more

I was really surprised with how well this went over in baby story time. I thought it might be a little long, but the parents loved it, and the rhythm helped it go quite quickly. I think this would be fun in any age story time, honestly, as with toddlers and preschoolers you could have them either jump or yell the word "jump" with you. I think that would go over really well. Also, the illustrations are a lot of fun. Definitely a keeper, and one I'll use again!

This is a fun little tale that reminds me of some of the reading primers our youngest brings home from her Kindergarten class. This book came as a "prize" in a box of Cheerios. We thought it was pretty cute and really enjoyed the videos on YouTube through the link provided by Tina (http://www.fischart.com/KidsMusic.html). I only read the English narrative, though the book was printed in both English and Spanish (We did yell an occasional Salto!)

This is another of my favorite storytime books. It's great to get the kids up and have them jump when the animals do. Great way to make it interactive and they laugh at the end when the whale splooshes. - Marie, Outreach Services

love the rhythm, rhyming, repetition - a sure crowd pleaser! Fantastic to read aloud. Fantastic for rhyming. I'm even guessing it works well for beginning readers, since the rhymes focus on short, one-syllable common words.

“Well, I’m a bug. I’m a bug. I’m a snug little bug, and I’m sleeping on a jug. Until I see a frog, and I . . . . JUMP!”
Andrea
Cute book that has a bug jumping when he sees a frog, the frog jumping when he sees a cat, etc. Sharp eyed readers may see the little frog leg sticking out from the cat's mouth but in the end everyone is returned to their homes so any upset from the thought of each animal eating the next one is quickly put to rest.
Laura
A fun book that features a variety of animals who JUMP! away from another. The consistent pattern and rhymes make for a very appealing read aloud and young listeners will love to JUMP! for every new animal. Recommended for preschool listeners, this book has a lot of fun energy.
Paula
Bright and colorful illustrations going from a small animal to a bigger animal that could even be used for toddlers emitting some pages to make it shorter.
From bugs and frogs to alligators and whales, frightened animals always move out of the way of a larger opponent.
Randie
A humorous rhyming tale of animals who do what they do until they see a larger animal and JUMP! Young children will enjoy the pattern.

We got this from a Cheerios box, which I love because it is the perfect size for a five-year-old.
Erica
Play around with silly voices and this story will entertain anyone willing to listen. Great for storytimes and storytelling (come up with a satisfying closing line or name all the animals using their "voices" in reverse order).

This is another of my favorite storytime books. It's great to get the kids up and have them jump when the animals do. Great way to make it interactive and they laugh at the end when the whale splooshes.
Edna
Very, very cute book that graduates from a little bug jumping away from a frog to a shark jumping away from a whale. The 2-page illustrations are fun to look at showing the animal movements and expressions.

Literacy skills:

Phonological awareness-This book has exciting, rhythmic text that promotes phonological awareness.

Print motivation-Great for participation, engaging the reader fosters print motivation.
Tina
told in song music at fischart.com/kidsmusic.html, predictable text, rhyming-word families, great for beginning readers, possible storytime, read-aloud, everyone gets swallowed and then released

This book is kind of like "The Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly" meets "Stuck." The frog jumps to catch a fly and sets off a chain of events with lots of other creatures. My four year old loved it!
Daniel
Kids love reading along with this one. I had a group of 102 today and it went over quite well. The art is fun and the rhythm is easy to find. I would recommend it for mixed-age storytimes.

This is a cute book to explore rhyming words with children. Each animal does a different action that rhymes with what they are. Love the illustrations and the children will think it is hilarious.

This one would be fun for younger kiddos. Especially those who might like to look at the book a second time to do all the animal sounds. (Like Jared. Mom, you need to read this to him!)
Georgiana
Super good illustrations--really fun. But the book just kind of ends, which was kind of disappointing. Short read. Bigger animals make the previous smaller animal "JUMP".
Ashley
Very preditable, easy for children to join along. Kind of a harsh moral, than animals eat other animals, but children have to learn the circle of life. Great pictures!
Tanya W
Great book for little ones... great rhyme and repeating theme. 3 year old loved it... it's fun for him to say "jump" each time it's time to say jump.
Alia
The text flows nicely and the illustrations are cute. But most importantly, this would make an excellent book for an interactive story-time reading!
Mandy
You've gotta jump before you become a tasty treat for something that wants to meet and then eat you!

(Good to go along with story "I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly."
Kim
Cute story with rhyming text and large, fun illustrations.

themes: animals, jumping, movement

This is one My kids want to read every night, they love to JUMP right along with the story.
Donalyn
Fun rhyming text with various animals startled by predators? Perhaps, I don't really get it:(
Sarah
