WOWZA!! Rarely have I encountered a main character so loaded with ANGSTY RAGENESS and OMNIDIRECTIONAL BADITUDE as James Stark (aka Sandman Slim). I mean this guy is full of ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHH!...and it works...mostly.
Now let me say at the outset that I don’t read a ton of Keith Urban Fantasy. I enjoy The Dresden Files on a casual, non-rabid, basis and despite wanting to bitch-slap the main character for his all too often bouts of annoying. I really liked The Devil You Know and plan on reading...more

Ever read a book and find yourself thinking, "This is pretty good, but it could have been face-melting awesome."? This is one of those books for me. I really liked it, but found myself picking some serious nits while reading it.
Stark was a magician (a real magician, not a sawing-a-woman-in-half kind) who was madly in love with his girlfriend Alice when he was betrayed by another magician named Mason and some others. Mason managed to send Stark to hell, but as a living person, not a dead soul.

I guess I'm just getting old, but I'm so tired. I started 3 (4 if you count Tooth Fairy which I gave all of 2 stars) Urban Fantasies recently...one I took off my books completely as a waste of time and I didn't even bother to rate or review it...another I stopped reading and gave 1 star as another in a long line of anti-hero clones etc...now this one, and it's the same. I don't mind antiheroes, if their good antiheroes. This is another mouthy guy with attitude that I can't find even remotely bel...more

After the second read-through, I've come to the conclusion that Sandman Slim is Jason Statham starring in a Simon R. Green Nightside story. Pulpy urban fantasy on steroids, it's perfect for an adrenalin read, but I recommend a pass if you are in the mood for deep thinking or don't feel up for violence.
Jason-cough- I mean, Stark--has made it out of Hell and is looking for revenge. Eleven years ago, six fellow members of a magic circle sent him to Hell, and his mission is to kill them all. Landing...more

“Trust me on this — Hell is a tough room.”
James Stark is back and it's time for heads to roll (literally). His “friends” managed to get him pulled into Hell and he's spent the last 11 years entertaining Lucifer and Beelzebub in the gladiatorial arena, learning plenty of new skills (including how to speak High Hellion, which sounds a lot like barking), and acquiring a couple of useful magical objects. Now he's crawled out of the abyss and he's ready for rev...more

Recommends it for:
fans of the Dresden Files series and similar
Profane, violent, sarcastic, hilarious. Kick-ass anti-hero with a heart of, well, maybe not gold, but perhaps hell-fire burnished silver. This very likely the first book of a series.

I'm not sure if I should be giving it 3 or 4 stars. I did enjoy the book a lot, but I have a feeling it is the weakest one in the series, as most first books are.
This book is straight up Urban Fantasy, not a drop of Paranormal Romance in there. This doesn't bug me at all, as I'm as much of a fan of UF as I am of PNR. I've been reading a lot of PNR lately which mostly consists of female main characters kicking ass, although I quite enjoy that I was pleased to read a book with a male main charact...more

This book certainly had style. It was fun and fascinating and kept my attention throughout. The first-person narration had a very snarky, Buffy-speak-esque-ness to it that was a hoot and a half to read through, and a lot of the magical items and images were both unique and vivid. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
Having said that, I can't quite decide if it was a good book or not. It feels more like one of those books that either you love it or you hate it, and I was fortunate enough to lo...more

In Sandman Slim, a man returns from Hell to track down the people who sent him there, people who in the passing eleven years also killed the woman he loved.
He returns from Hell to LA, which is sort of a joke, because LA is to many people a kind of hell on earth. The book is filled with many such jokes, and they keep things light even as the forces of darkness close in. Me, I happen to love LA, but the endless LA-ribbing didn't keep me from really enjoying Sandman Slim. In part because the ribbi...more

This was recommended to me by an Angeleno who adores Los Angeles. One of the things she liked was the spot-on descriptions of and references to places in LA. I liked that part, but not being a hard-core Angeleno, that wasn't as important to me as say, the plot.
The storyline in this book has potential. Think 'Die Hard' meets 'Supernatural' (the television show). Protagonist John Stark escapes from hell where he has spent the past eleven years as a hitman for a dark angel. He heads back to earth t...more

This is one of the bad boys in the paranormal genre - it's grim and gritty, it's violent with crass language and basically with no hint of romance, which seems to dominate the supernatural and urban fantasy books nowadays.
It's summed up in - Life sucks and then you die.
Meet James Stark, a badass and a so-so magician, who was one day dragged to Hell and dropped in the arena to fight all types of monsters for the amusement of Hellions and serving Azazel, one of Lucifer's generals, who sometimes...more

From the start, the plot sounds like it could be either really tacky or really amazing. Stark is back from Hell after being betrayed and tossed Downtown by so-called friends; he's jonesing for some revenge now. But rather than fill the book with cliche after cliche, Kadrey treats Heaven and Hell more as they were traditionally meant to be keeping it from the realm of cheese. In Kadrey's world, they simply do not care for Earth and its going-ons because they're too busy looking out for their own...more
Sandman Slim is a riotous [and blasphemous] romp that compares favourably to the satirical novels of Christopher Moore. With a shot of Mickey Spillane thrown in for good measure.
It's the story of James Stark, a descendant of Wild Bill Hickock and a practitioner of the dark arts, who returns to his home in modern day Los Angeles after spending eleven long years exiled, but still alive, in Hell. He was sent there by a circle of fellow magicians who were threatened by his superior powers.

So, this book is a basic "back for revenge" kind of thing. Our protagonist gets sent bodily to hell, somehow manages to survive for 11 years, then gets embedded with a magic key that lets him go anywhere, and comes back for revenge after they kill his girl.
There are some interesting concepts - a bit of a twist that the guy coming back from Hell is still actually alive, some cool weaponry, like the na'at which is a weapon from Hell which is pretty mutatable, some magical stuff, so on and so forth...more

In Sandman Slim, Richard Kadrey introduces us to Stark, one of the best badasses ever written. You know this on page one, when Stark -- having just escaped from Hell -- comes to on a pile of burning garbage, and treats being on fire with almost nonchalance.
Stark is human, yet somehow survived being a gladiator in Hell. Having escaped, he's back to kill the circle of magicians that sent him there in the first place and killed his girlfriend.

OK, that was fun.
This ain't Lit-ra-chuh, folks, it's just a book that's fun to read. You got your homage to Donald Westlake, including some Westlakian wisecracks. You got your magic, and things getting blowed up real good, and yer fistfights, and girls. And lots of action.
There are flaws in the plot and continuity, as others have noted. Why does he EVER need to steal a car? Big deal. It moves along nicely.

A book I'd class as "Good, but could have been better." And based on some of the other GR reviews I've scanned, I don't seem to be alone in this feeling. I thought the first fifty pages were amazing, the next hundred pages very good, and then things started to get, well, rather silly. As in eye-rolling ridiculous. Not enough to taint the whole book by any stretch, but after what went on in the last fifty pages or so I'm a bit amused that there's, four or five more books in this series as I write...more
I'm not sure why I finished this novel, considering how much I didn't like it. I think I WANTED to like it, the premise is so delicious and there was a lot of potential, but somehow the writer just pissed the potential all over the reader. The anti-hero James Stark (WHY do you name everyone stark, Americans? It just reminds me of extra-strong mustard. Yeah, it means 'strong' in Swedish, I get it, but still) aka Sandman Slim (even the author thinks it's a sucky name. Except him thinking it too is...more
Urban fantasy has been a pretty fallow genre for me, despite loving urban stories and being a reader of fantasy. Mainly because it has been taken over by paranormal romance (darn necrophiliacs ruin everything). Thankfully Kadrey is here to show how it can be done. The writer of one of the better of the cyberpunk novels Metrophage (not the most important but hands down one of the best realized and written), he disappeared and maybe spent eleven years in hell like his protagonist Stark because he...more
As a fast paced, action oriented story that is full of laughs and some serious irony, this book came highly recommended to me. As, i started reading it, i found myself confused: why the 'hell' does the series refer to someone called sandman slim, when the main character is stark, 'just' stark, and what the 'hell' is going on. I almost stopped reading, but am glad that I did not. After, a few pages, the story starts picking up, and slowly by slowly filling in the blank spaces. The main character...more
I think fans of the Occult genre will enjoy it. Spooky cool characters we've all seen before Constantine/ HellBlazer, its well written, good characters and a good performance. If you enjoyed the movie Constantine, it makes for a fun read. In a nut-shell its about a Magician/Wizard type punk guy who has been sent to Hell for the part eleven years and retuns to present day L.A.. Naturally the first item on his agenda is a blood bath of revenge. Without giving too much away the story contains eleme...more
James Stark is back from Hell and his clothes are burnt.
Other than that, his day has sucked.
He's returned to Los Angeles on a mission of revenge, but even that gets complicated. Complicated in the form of a midget in a video store he fancies himself a magician but is soon reduced to a mere talking head. Yes, an actual talking head.
And it gets weird from there. The forces of both Hell and Heaven have ideas for Stark's future.

It's decent, especially if you need a dose of testosterone in your urban fantasy. But the main character is unlikable, whining, brainless, and immature to a staggering degree, and that took my opinion of the book down a few notches.
Stark was sent to hell by a rival magician, where he fought it out as a hellish gladiator for eleven years. He escapes, and comes back topside for revenge. At around three quarters into the book, it becomes apparent there's more to this than meets the eye.

Quick & Dirty: Anti-hero Stark, aka Sandman Slim, escapes Hell and comes back to Earth to exact revenge on the people that sent him there 11 years ago. There is lots of killing, drinking, blasphemy, and magic that is used in the hunt for Mason and his crew; and you cheer Stark on during every minute of it.

Kadrey's first in the Sandman Slim series is very, very good. I am reviewing this after my third read through, the most recent after just finishing the just released fourth novel, Devil Said Bang. The first novel stands the test of time, remaining consistent and logical within the fantasy framework that Kadrey penned. Also, it is a a HELL of a lot of fun.

Two weeks ago, BN.com had this title on offer for their “Free Fridays” eBook promotion. It seemed interesting from the synopsis and it had gotten many favorable reviews. Leaving myself just an hour or so in the evenings to read, I just finished this this morning and find myself divided on what I thought of the book.
First, I did enjoy the read. It was a bit “up and down” in terms of getting into the characters and story. Things move at a very brisk pace and at times, the story seems a bit rushed....more

This book was littered with interesting pieces, but somehow the sum of its parts wasn't all that impressive. Honestly, it read like someone who went 'I love Jim Butcher! I'm going to write a book just like him! Also, "The Crow" is the best movie ever!'
Aspects of the story were really well done, but the main character was overly melancholic/cynical and given to throwing out a saucy one liner far too frequently. It also veered off into some personal fantasy zone too often, where the author would...more

What would you do if your friends literally made a deal with the Devil to send you to hell? Would you give up? Roll over and die? Not James Stark. He became an infamous hitman in hell for more than a decade before escaping to L.A. looking for revenge. This is the idea behind Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim and it’s a fantastically supercharged, alcohol-fueled demolition derby of awesome.
