Lift the flap books work because of the intrigue and excitement they bring - what's behind this flap? But this book is clever and absorbing outside of its flap technology. There's a logic to the book - a counting book from one to ten - that very young children can anticipate and participate in. Thematically, the book stays together and true to its audience because of the familiarity of the animals - dogs, fish, cows, and pigs, amongst others. Best of all, this is also a touch-and-feel book, and ...more

Filled with talking points, tactile panels, fold-out spreads. Rhymes: "Three has fleas." "Four goes to shore." On the fold out is factual information like "How many piglets are born at a time? -A mother pig can give birth to 8-12 piglets and can dod this twice in one year." Can be used for a variety of age groups as a one-on-one read, focusing on various aspects of the book depending on the age level.

Young children will delight in this interactive book. One Weighs a Ton has a little bit of everything; lift-the-flaps, touch-and-feel, counting, information, humor and great illustrations. The text as well as the illustrated rendition of the number give clues as to what animal you will be learning about once you lift the flap. Entertaining and educational, what more can you ask for?

A great numbers book! I like that the rhyme will help kids make the connection between the actual number and then the number of animals depicted in the illustration.

I think they could have done a better job with the touch-and-feel aspect, though. What's with having a mama feeding her 6 little chicks, and not making the chicks fuzzy?!?!

This is a fun and beautiful book featuring clever rhymes and facts about animals. Each page has a flap that opens up so it's interactive. Violet loves this book and won't leave it at the library if she sees it there. We've checked it out several times now.

Has a lift-the-page format that involves some riddles, focuses on numbers, and contains facts that will interest elementary-aged readers, though the book seems geared toward younger kids. It is a fun, simple, interactive book.
